Error 0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect,” but it is not one single Windows 7 failure. The correct fix depends on whether the message appeared during Windows Update, an installation, Backup and Restore, or System Restore. Restart first, note the operation and any file path or log text, then follow the matching branch below. Windows Update problems usually respond to the troubleshooter, service checks, System File Checker, or a rebuilt update cache. Backup failures can result from a path longer than 260 characters, while a Windows 7 SP1 System Restore failure may require chkdsk /R. A separate system-state case involves Visual Studio 2012 and more than 1,000 .NET subdirectories. Do not apply a registry edit or generic cleaner as a universal cure.
What does error 0x80070057 mean in Windows 7?
Windows uses 0x80070057 when an operation receives a parameter it cannot accept. The parameter might be an update component, an installation setting, a file path, a backup volume, or a restore operation. Because the same code is reused in different subsystems, the code by itself cannot identify the failing component.

Start by recording where the message appeared and what Windows was doing. A dialog during Windows Update needs a different sequence from a Backup and Restore log or a System Restore scan. The wording Microsoft uses in its installation table is “0x80070057 | The parameter is incorrect.”
Which 0x80070057 fix should I try first?
Use the operation that failed to choose a branch rather than trying every repair in random order. This table maps the visible symptom to the least invasive starting point.

How do I fix 0x80070057 in Windows Update?
Work through these steps in order. After each step, retry the update so you know which change helped.
1. Restart and retry once
Save your work, restart Windows 7, and run Windows Update again. A restart completes pending servicing actions and releases files or services left open by a previous attempt. If the same code returns, continue rather than repeatedly clicking Retry.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security, then Find and fix problems.
- Choose Fix problems with Windows Update and let the wizard inspect the service and update components.
- Apply the recommended repair, close the wizard, restart if it asks, and try Windows Update again.
The troubleshooter is a diagnostic step; it does not prove that the update itself is faulty. Note any component or service name that it reports because that evidence helps if you need to continue.
3. Confirm that the Windows Update service is running
- Press
Windows+R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the services list.
- Check its status. If it is stopped, select Start. If it is running, select Restart after opening the service’s context menu.
- Open Properties and make sure the startup setting is not disabled. Close the console and retry the update.
If the service cannot start or immediately stops, record the exact message. Do not delete service entries or change unrelated registry values as a first response.
4. Check protected system files with System File Checker
System File Checker must run from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open the Start menu, type
cmd, right-click cmd.exe, and choose Run as administrator. - At the prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is running.
- Restart Windows if SFC reports that it repaired files, then test Windows Update again.
SFC checks protected Windows components; it does not replace a damaged update download. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, keep that result with your troubleshooting notes and proceed to the cache step.

5. Rebuild the Windows Update download cache
Use this branch when the update cache may contain damaged or incomplete files. Back up personal files before making system changes.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt as described above.
- Stop the update service by entering
net stop wuauserv. - Open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin Windows Explorer and delete the contents of that folder, not the Windows directory itself. If a file is locked, confirm that the service has stopped. - Return to the elevated Command Prompt and enter
net start wuauserv. - Restart the computer and run Windows Update. Windows will download fresh update files as needed.
Clearing this cache removes locally stored update downloads and history data used by the update client; it does not remove your personal documents. If the service refuses to stop, restart Windows and repeat the command before deleting anything.
What should I do if 0x80070057 appears during Windows installation?
When the code appears during an installation or upgrade rather than in the normal update client, first eliminate basic environmental causes.
- Check the available space on the destination system drive and on any drive used for temporary setup files. Remove only nonessential data after making a backup.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external storage, printers, and other peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and installation media connected.
- Restart and run the installation again. If the failure recurs, note the exact stage and whether setup names a drive, partition, or file.
Do not format a partition or delete boot files merely because this code appears. Those actions can destroy the recovery path while leaving the original parameter problem unresolved.
How do I fix 0x80070057 in Windows 7 Backup and Restore?
Microsoft documents a Windows 7 Backup failure when the complete path of a file is longer than 260 characters. The backup log can contain wording such as “Error in backup of volume name during read: Error [0x80070057] The parameter is incorrect.”
Find the path that fails
- Open the Backup and Restore results or the backup log and identify the volume, folder, or file named near the error.
- In Windows Explorer, inspect the entire path from the drive letter through every folder and the filename. Count the folder names, separators, and filename together; shortening only the final filename may not be enough.
- Move the file to a folder closer to the drive root, or rename parent folders to shorter names. For example, move a deeply nested document to a short folder such as
C:BackupSourcebefore rerunning the job. - Run the backup again and verify that the previously failing file is included.
The documented workaround is to move the file to a location that reduces the complete path to less than 260 characters. This is a path-length correction, not a general repair for every backup error carrying the same code.

How do I fix System Restore failed 0x80070057 on Windows 7 SP1?
This branch applies when Windows 7 Service Pack 1 reports that System Restore failed while scanning drive C:. Check the disk before trying the restore point again.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Enter
chkdsk C: /Rand press Enter. - If Windows says the volume is in use, agree to schedule the check for the next restart, then reboot.
- Allow the disk check to complete. The
/Roption searches for unreadable sectors and attempts to recover readable information, so the operation can take a long time. - After Windows starts, retry System Restore. If the same restore point still fails, select a different restore point.
Keep the computer powered during the disk check. If the disk check reports repeated errors, preserve important files before attempting additional recovery work; the restore-point failure may be a symptom of a broader storage problem.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What is the Visual Studio 2012 system-state backup case?
A narrow Windows 7 system-state backup condition is associated with Visual Studio 2012 creating more than 1,000 subdirectories under C:WindowsMicrosoft.Net. In the documented symptom, the System writer is missing from the Volume Shadow Copy Service writer list and the backup can return 0x80070057.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run
VSSAdmin list writers. - Look for the System writer. If it is missing and Visual Studio 2012 is installed, inspect
C:WindowsMicrosoft.Netand determine whether it contains more than 1,000 subdirectories. - Compare all of those symptoms with Microsoft’s documented condition and its hotfix prerequisites. Apply a hotfix only when the computer matches that case and the prerequisites are satisfied.
Do not install a hotfix solely because Visual Studio is present or because a backup returned 0x80070057. The writer result and the subdirectory condition are the evidence that distinguishes this special case from an ordinary file-path or service problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I tell whether the fix worked?
Repeat the exact operation that originally failed and check its result rather than relying on the disappearance of a single dialog.
- For Windows Update, confirm that the update reaches installation and that Windows Update history records a successful result.
- For an installation, verify that setup completes and that the installed program or Windows component starts normally after a restart.
- For Backup and Restore, open the backup result and confirm the previously failing file or volume is included.
- For System Restore, confirm that Windows starts at the selected restore point and that the restore operation reports completion.
- For a system-state backup, run
VSSAdmin list writersagain and confirm that the System writer appears without an error.
If a branch changes the symptom but not the result, return to the context table. A different operation may be failing, or the code may be a secondary message that follows an earlier disk, service, or path error.

Which 0x80070057 repairs change files or services?
The impact of each step matters when you are working on an older installation or a computer with valuable data.
| Repair | System impact | When to stop |
|---|---|---|
| Restart | Completes pending operations and releases locks | Stop if Windows cannot boot normally after the restart |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Inspects and may reset update-related settings | Record any reported component before closing it |
| Service check | Starts or restarts the Windows Update service | Stop if the service returns a specific access or dependency error |
sfc /scannow |
Checks protected system files and may replace damaged copies | Save the final result if repairs are incomplete |
| SoftwareDistribution cleanup | Removes locally cached update downloads | Stop if files remain locked after confirming the service is stopped |
chkdsk C: /R |
Checks file-system structures and disk sectors | Back up personal data first; investigate repeated disk errors |
| Shortening a backup path | Moves or renames source files | Preserve the original folder structure if applications depend on it |
| Case-specific hotfix | Changes system components under Microsoft’s documented conditions | Do not apply it without matching symptoms and prerequisites |
What should I avoid when troubleshooting this code?
- Do not treat 0x80070057 as proof of malware, a failing motherboard, or one universal Windows defect.
- Do not use a registry edit, “cleaner,” or random repair download that claims to fix every occurrence of the code.
- Do not delete the entire
C:Windowsdirectory or format a drive to solve an update, backup, or restore message. - Do not interrupt a scheduled disk check once it has started unless the computer is at risk of losing power.
- Do not install a Microsoft hotfix for the Visual Studio system-state case unless the writer and directory conditions match the documented scenario.
Back up personal files before clearing caches, running disk repairs, or attempting installation recovery. Keep the exact error text, operation name, and any path or writer result; those details are more useful than the number alone when you need further support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can error 0x80070057 delete my personal files?
The code identifies an operation that rejected a parameter; it does not, by itself, indicate that files were deleted. Check the operation’s log and verify important documents after a failed backup, restore, or installation. Keep an independent copy of personal data before running disk repairs or recovery steps.
Should I reinstall Windows 7 when this error appears?
Reinstallation is not a first-line response because the same code can come from a long backup path, an update cache, a disk scan, or a narrowly defined system-state condition. Use the branch that matches the failed operation and preserve your data before considering a reinstall. A clean installation can remove applications and settings without addressing an unrelated backup-path problem.
Why can the same number appear in Windows Update and Backup and Restore?
The hexadecimal value is a shared Windows error status, not a unique identifier for one product feature. Different components can return it when an input falls outside what that component accepts. The screen, log entry, path, and service or writer status provide the information needed to select the right repair.
