Error 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the dependable fix is to open Services, set Windows Update to start automatically, start it when necessary, restart the computer, and check for updates again. If that does not work, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then repair possible component corruption with DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC). Use recovery or installation media only after backing up your files, because some recovery choices remove applications, settings, or personal data.
The commonly mistyped code “8×80070422” refers to the same hexadecimal error when the first character is entered incorrectly. The steps below assume that the failed operation was Windows Update. Microsoft’s mapping is specific: if another Windows component produced the code, its disabled service may require a different remedy.

Microsoft Support describes 0x80070422 as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” Microsoft Learn maps the code to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and a Windows Update service that is not running on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Windows Update cannot search for, download, or install updates while its service is unavailable. The code does not, by itself, identify malware, a failing hard drive, or a problem with a particular game. It reports the service state at the time Windows Update tried to work.

Check that Windows Update was the operation that failed
Before changing anything, write down the exact action that displayed the message and copy the complete code. Microsoft’s service-specific instructions apply when Windows Update generated 0x80070422. If the message appeared while installing a printer, launching another program, or using a different Windows component, do not assume that enabling Windows Update will repair that separate operation.
What should I do before changing Windows services?
- Save open documents and close applications before restarting.
- Record the exact error text, code, and operation so you can tell whether the same failure returns.
- Do not enable every service as a blanket “fix.” Services have different purposes, and the documented remedy for this code concerns Windows Update.

The first-line service change is reversible: you are changing the Windows Update startup setting and starting that service, not reinstalling Windows.
How do I enable the Windows Update service?
Use the Services console, then restart and run Windows Update again. This is the primary Microsoft-recommended procedure for 0x80070422.
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one. - In the list, locate Windows Update. Double-click it to open Properties.
- In Startup type, choose Automatic.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Restart the PC. After signing in, open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If Windows Update starts and the update completes, no command-line repair or reinstall is needed. Keep the exact code available if the message returns, because the next steps depend on whether the service starts normally and whether Windows files appear corrupted.
What if the Start button is unavailable or the service stops again?
Read the status and any error text shown in the service properties window. A service that is already running does not need to be started again; apply the Automatic startup setting, restart, and test Windows Update. If the service cannot be started, stops immediately, or produces another code, continue with the built-in troubleshooter rather than changing unrelated services.

How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
Windows 11 provides a dedicated troubleshooter in Settings. It checks common update problems and may apply corrective actions without requiring a reinstall.
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Open Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and allow the check to finish.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
The troubleshooter is an escalation after confirming the service state. It does not justify enabling all Windows services, and it cannot guarantee that every update failure has the same cause.
Can DISM and SFC fix 0x80070422?
They can repair Windows component or system-file corruption that prevents updating, but they do not replace the service step. Microsoft’s documented sequence is DISM first, then SFC, followed by another Windows Update attempt.
Run DISM in an elevated Command Prompt
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator. Approve User Account Control.
- Enter the following command exactly and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthAllow DISM to complete. Microsoft notes that the command can take several minutes. Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause.
Run System File Checker after DISM
- In the same elevated Command Prompt window, enter:
sfc /scannow- Press Enter and wait until the verification reaches completion.
- Restart Windows when the command has finished.
- Open Windows Update and try the update again.
Running SFC before DISM is not the sequence Microsoft documents for this repair path. Both commands require administrator access, and interrupting either one can leave the check incomplete. If the commands finish but 0x80070422 remains, return to the service properties and verify that Windows Update is still set to Automatic and running.

Which repair option should I use if normal fixes fail?
Recovery is a last resort because its impact depends on the option you select. Compare the scope and retention consequences before choosing anything.

Microsoft’s Recovery options guidance emphasizes that the labels and results differ by path. Review the confirmation screen instead of assuming that every “reset” or “reinstall” choice has the same retention behavior.
When is installation media relevant?
Installation media is appropriate when the normal service, troubleshooter, DISM, and SFC paths do not restore a usable Windows installation. Microsoft says you can create it with a working PC and a USB drive of at least 8 GB. The media itself is not required for the first four steps above.
- Back up important personal files to another location before creating or using recovery media.
- Use a working PC to create Windows installation media on a USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity.
- Start the affected PC with the recovery or installation process and read each retention choice.
- Choose the path that matches your repair goal, understanding that a full reinstall can remove apps, settings, and personal data.
If you cannot determine what a recovery option will remove, stop at the confirmation screen and make another backup. A reinstall is not a routine substitute for correcting a stopped Windows Update service.

Changing every service to Automatic
There is no safe blanket recipe that enables all services. The documented fix names Windows Update; changing unrelated startup types can create new boot, privacy, or compatibility problems.

Skipping the restart
The service setting and its current process state are not always fully reflected until Windows restarts. Restart after applying the change before judging whether the first fix worked.
Closing DISM or SFC early
Both commands can take several minutes. Wait for the command to report completion, then run the next command in the stated order.
Using recovery without a backup
Recovery choices are not interchangeable. Some preserve files while removing apps or settings; others can remove everything. Back up before selecting a reset or reinstall path.
Treating a different operation as Windows Update
The same numeric code should be interpreted in context. If it appeared outside Windows Update, record that operation and seek the service guidance for the component that actually failed.
