Error 0x80080005 in Windows 8 means CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE, or “Server execution failed.” The missing zero in “0X8008005” is a common way the code is written, but the important detail is where it appears: Windows Update, Media Feature Pack setup, a COM+ application, and a single OLE program can all produce this HRESULT for different reasons.

Start by recording the exact program or installer and checking Event Viewer. Then repair Windows with DISM followed by System File Checker. Use the Windows Update reset only when updating fails, reserve the SharedSection registry change for the documented many-COM+-accounts case, and investigate a registered local-server executable when one OLE application is affected.

What does error 0x80080005 mean in Windows 8?

Microsoft defines HRESULT 0x80080005 as CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE — “Server execution failed.” It is a COM/OLE activation error rather than a diagnosis by itself. Windows reports it when a server component cannot be started, but the component might be part of Windows Update, an installer, a COM+ service, or an ordinary desktop application.

The title “0X8008005” usually omits one zero. Use the full eight-digit form, 0x80080005, when searching Event Viewer, writing down the message, or comparing logs.

Why the same code has different fixes

The failing operation determines the useful remedy. A damaged Windows component store can affect several functions, while an unregistered or missing executable can affect only one application. A COM+ desktop-heap limit can appear when many applications run under different user accounts, but changing that registry value will not repair an unrelated Windows Update cache.

Where you see the error Typical scope First evidence to collect Appropriate path
Windows Update says it cannot search for or install updates Operating-system update service Windows Update history, update troubleshooter, Event Viewer Repair system files, check the clock, then reset the update cache
Windows 8 Media Feature Pack setup One optional Windows component Installer message, pending updates, clean-boot result Install pending updates, verify time settings, and try a clean boot
Several COM+ applications fail for different accounts Multiple COM+ activations COM+ event entries and account-specific pattern Back up the registry and apply the narrowly documented desktop-heap change
One COM/OLE program fails One registered local server Program path, executable permissions, launch test Verify that the registered server exists and starts in the required context

What should I do before changing anything?

Capture the context before attempting a repair. This prevents a Windows Update procedure from being applied to a COM+ problem and gives you information to use if the issue returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the exact code and wording. Record whether the message is 0x80080005, “Server execution failed,” or a longer installer or update message.
  2. Identify the trigger. Note the program, Windows component, update number, or installer that was running. Record whether the failure occurs at startup, when opening a file, or only during an update.
  3. Check whether the failure affects one account or many. If a second Windows account can run the same program, that points away from a system-wide COM+ desktop-heap problem.
  4. Open Event Viewer. Press Win+R, enter eventvwr.msc, and review Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System at the time of the failure. COM+ documentation notes that the event log can contain additional troubleshooting information.
  5. Back up important data. The built-in repair commands are designed to repair Windows components, but a registry edit later in this guide requires a separate backup and a restart.

How do I repair Windows 8 system files with DISM and SFC?

Run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first, then System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses; running SFC first can leave it without the files needed to replace corrupted protected files.

Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Move the pointer to the lower-left corner, right-click, and choose Command Prompt (Admin). If User Account Control asks for confirmation, select Yes.
  2. Enter this command exactly and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Allow the operation to reach completion. It can pause at a percentage for an extended period; do not close the window while it is working. DISM uses Windows Update as a repair source when available.

If DISM cannot find source files

On a damaged or offline Windows installation, DISM may report that source files could not be found. Microsoft describes using a matching Windows installation, network share, removable media, or Windows 8 DVD as the repair source. The source must match the installed edition and architecture closely enough for DISM to use its component files. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary system image or a different Windows release.

Run System File Checker after DISM

  1. Keep the elevated Command Prompt open, or reopen it with administrator rights.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC reports whether it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or found files it could not repair. Restart Windows after both commands finish, then repeat the action that originally produced 0x80080005.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to interpret an unsuccessful SFC result

  • If SFC repaired files, restart before testing again; the repaired files may not be loaded until reboot.
  • If SFC says some files could not be repaired, run DISM again and repeat SFC once. Save the final message rather than repeatedly running the scan without checking the original trigger.
  • If the error occurs only in one program after system files are healthy, move to the COM/OLE checks below instead of making broad registry changes.

How do I fix 0x80080005 when Windows Update fails?

When the message appears while Windows Update is searching or installing, repair the update service state after completing the system-file checks. Microsoft associates this context with damaged update files, permissions, or incorrect system configuration.

Check date, time, and time zone

  1. Open Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Date and Time.
  2. On the Date and Time tab, confirm the date and clock. Select Change date and time if they are wrong.
  3. On the Internet Time tab, use Change settings and synchronize with an available time server if your network permits it.
  4. On the Time Zone tab, select the zone that matches your location. Retry Windows Update after correcting the settings.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Open Control Panel > System and Security > Troubleshoot common computer problems, choose Fix problems with Windows Update, and follow the prompts. Apply any repair it reports, restart if requested, and test the update again.

Reset the SoftwareDistribution cache

The update cache can contain an incomplete or corrupted download. This procedure removes cached update files; Windows recreates the folder contents when the service starts again. It does not remove your personal documents.

  1. Open Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Stop the update service:
net stop wuauserv
  1. Leave the command window open. In File Explorer, open C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  2. Delete the contents inside SoftwareDistribution. If a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service stopped; do not force-delete unrelated system files.
  3. Return to the elevated Command Prompt and start the service:
net start wuauserv
  1. Restart Windows, open Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

The first search after a reset can take longer because Windows must rebuild its local update metadata. If the same code returns, check Event Viewer and Windows Update history for a more specific error rather than repeating the cache deletion indefinitely.

How do I fix the Media Feature Pack version of 0x80080005?

A Windows 8 Media Feature Pack installer can produce this HRESULT even when Windows Update itself works. Treat this as an installer-specific case.

  1. Open Windows Update and install all pending updates that apply to your Windows 8 edition. Restart when Windows requests it, then try the Media Feature Pack setup again.
  2. Verify the date, time, and time zone using the Control Panel path above. An incorrect clock can interfere with setup checks.
  3. Perform a clean boot to prevent a third-party startup service from interfering. Press Win+R, type msconfig, and press Enter. On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, choose Disable all, and apply the change. On the Startup tab, open Task Manager and disable enabled startup items. Restart and run the Media Feature Pack installer.
  4. After testing, return to msconfig and restore normal startup. Re-enable services and startup items in groups so that you can identify a conflict without leaving security or hardware services disabled.

These steps come from Microsoft guidance for this Media Feature Pack scenario; they are not a universal remedy for every appearance of 0x80080005.

Could a COM+ desktop-heap limit cause this error?

It can, but only when the symptoms match the documented COM+ case: multiple COM+ applications fail under different user accounts, and Event Viewer shows COM+ catalog or server-execution errors. Do not apply this registry change merely because an update or one application displayed the code.

Confirm the pattern first

  • Test more than one COM+ application, not just one executable.
  • Check whether failures occur when different Windows accounts start those applications.
  • Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for COM+ entries around the failure.

Back up the registry

  1. Press Win+R, enter regedit, and press Enter.
  2. In Registry Editor, select File > Export. Choose All under Export range, save the file to a location you can access offline, and confirm that the file exists.
  3. For additional protection, create a restore point before editing. A registry backup is still required because it lets you restore the original values directly.

Apply the documented SharedSection change

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerSubSystemsWindows

Open the SharedSection value within the Windows entry. Microsoft’s workaround for the matching desktop-heap scenario is to add 512 to the documented SharedSection value while preserving the other existing entries. Record the original value before changing it, modify only the intended numeric portion, close Registry Editor, and restart Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Registry values are exact text. A misplaced comma, deleted number, or change to another value can prevent Windows from starting correctly. If your symptoms do not include many COM+ applications and multiple accounts, cancel this procedure and use the system-file, update, or single-application path instead.

What if only one COM or OLE application fails?

When one application reports 0x80080005 and Windows Update and other programs work, investigate that program’s registered local server. Microsoft documents this HRESULT when a registered local OLE server executable cannot be found or cannot start under the account and launch environment.

Verify the executable

  1. Identify the application’s installation folder and confirm that the registered executable is present. A moved, deleted, quarantined, or partially uninstalled file can leave a registration pointing to a path that no longer exists.
  2. Try starting the executable directly using the same Windows account. Note whether it displays a permission, missing-runtime, or “access denied” message.
  3. Check the file’s Properties > Security settings and confirm that the account or service that launches it has permission to read and execute it.
  4. If the program uses a service or scheduled task, check its configured account and “Log on as” context. A file that starts interactively may still fail when launched by a restricted service account.
  5. Use the application’s own repair or reinstall option only after preserving its settings and data. A reinstall should recreate a valid local-server registration; it is not a substitute for repairing Windows system files when several programs fail.

Use Event Viewer to distinguish registration from permissions

Look for the executable path, class identifier, account name, and access-denied details in the related event. A path-not-found entry points to a missing or moved server; a permission entry points to the launch account or security settings. Capture the event text before uninstalling anything so you can compare the result after repair.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How can I tell whether the repair worked?

Use the original trigger as the test, not just the absence of a message during an unrelated action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For Windows Update, run a new update check and confirm that it can search and install without 0x80080005.
  • For Media Feature Pack, rerun that installer and verify that the feature appears under Windows features after setup completes.
  • For COM+, start the affected applications under the accounts that previously failed and check Event Viewer for new errors.
  • For a single OLE application, launch it through the same shortcut, service, or file association that originally failed. Directly opening the executable alone may not reproduce the COM activation path.

If the failure returns immediately after a restart, note the new event timestamp and any changed error text. A recurring code with a different trigger can represent a second problem rather than a failed repair.

What should I avoid when troubleshooting 0x80080005?

  • Do not treat the code as a universal Windows Update error. Its official meaning describes server execution, and the affected server varies by context.
  • Do not edit SharedSection as a first step. The change is tied to a specific many-COM+-accounts desktop-heap pattern and carries registry risk.
  • Do not run DISM and SFC in the opposite order. DISM should precede sfc /scannow.
  • Do not delete the entire Windows folder or unrelated registry keys. For an update reset, clear only the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution after stopping the Windows Update service.
  • Do not leave a clean boot in place permanently. Restore normal startup after testing and re-enable disabled items methodically.
  • Do not assume an antivirus alert is the cause. If security software quarantined the specific local-server executable, use its documented restore and exception process; otherwise continue with the program vendor’s repair path.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, settings that increase CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache files, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

When should I seek a deeper Windows 8 repair?

Escalate when DISM and SFC complete without resolving a system-wide failure, Windows Update still cannot rebuild its state, or several unrelated programs fail with different activation errors. Preserve Event Viewer entries, the exact HRESULT, update history, and the time the problem began. Those details help distinguish a damaged Windows installation from a failing application, a permissions change, or a hardware-related interruption.

A repair installation or reset changes more of Windows than the procedures above and should be considered only after backing up personal files and confirming the edition and installation media. If the error began immediately after installing software or a driver, review that change as a possible trigger before taking an irreversible step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0x80080005 the same as 0x8008005?

Usually, yes: the shorter form omits one zero from the eight-digit HRESULT. Confirm the complete value in the original dialog or Event Viewer before choosing a repair path, because similar-looking codes can represent different conditions.

Can I delete the SoftwareDistribution folder instead of its contents?

Stopping Windows Update and clearing the folder’s contents is the safer documented procedure. Leave the folder itself in place so Windows can recreate its cache structure when the service starts.

Why does DISM stop at one percentage for a long time?

DISM can spend a long period servicing the component store without changing the displayed percentage. Keep the elevated window open and wait for a completion message before running SFC or restarting.

What information from Event Viewer is most useful?

Save the event time, application or service name, executable path, account, class identifier if shown, and any access-denied or path-not-found text. Those details help separate a missing local server from a permissions problem or a broader COM+ failure.
