If Aternos shows Error 198 while you upload a Minecraft world ZIP, first try the legacy upload option described in an older Aternos community thread, then check the ZIP’s contents and your browser connection. The legacy-upload instructions and its stated 200 MB limit date to 2020, so confirm that the option and limit still apply in Aternos’s current interface.
What Error 198 means in this situation
The documented Error 198 case concerns uploading a zipped Minecraft world to Aternos. It is not evidence that the Minecraft game client itself cannot connect to a server.

A third-party guide updated March 13, 2026 describes Error 198 as a timeout or WebSocket connection error during upload. Aternos has not confirmed that precise root cause in the sources available here, so treat it as one possible explanation rather than an official diagnosis. The older Aternos community response says browser or internet conditions can also be involved.
Try the legacy upload option
In a September 2020 Aternos Community thread, a Helper recommended holding Ctrl while clicking the upload button to use the legacy uploader. The same reply stated a 200 MB maximum for that method; an Aternos developer clarified in the thread that the 1 GB limit did not apply to legacy uploads. This is historical forum guidance, not confirmation that the option or limits remain current. The forum is deprecated, so check Aternos’s current Help Center if the interface differs.

- Open the world-upload page for your Aternos server.
- Check whether the current interface offers an upload button and whether Aternos documents a legacy option.
- If the option is still available, hold Ctrl while clicking Upload, as described in the 2020 thread.
- If the ZIP exceeds the historical 200 MB limit, do not assume the legacy method will accept it; check current Aternos guidance for applicable limits.
Check the world ZIP before retrying
A third-party guide recommends using a standard ZIP archive and checking that the expected world files are inside it without an unnecessary extra folder level. This is general troubleshooting advice from that guide, not a confirmed Aternos-specific requirement.
- Open the ZIP on your computer and inspect its contents.
- Check that the archive contains the actual world data rather than only a wrapper folder that adds another level of nesting.
- If you create or change the archive, keep the original world folder intact until the upload succeeds.
Rule out browser and connection problems
The 2020 community reply noted that Error 198 and 199 could be browser- or internet-related. The later third-party guide also suggests trying another browser. Retry in a different browser and avoid interrupting or heavily loading the connection during the upload. These steps may help identify a transfer problem, but they do not establish a specific cause for the error.

Consider world size only if it is relevant
If the archive is large and upload attempts fail, reducing the world’s size may be worth considering. The third-party guide mentions MCASelector as a tool for trimming a world, but using it is optional and deleting chunks changes the world. Make a complete backup before editing; do not treat world editing as a first-line fix for a browser or connection failure.
