Error code 778 has no universal meaning or reset procedure. The correct repair depends on where the number appears, the manufacturer and model, the controller or application, and any suffix such as CA778. Komatsu uses 778/CA778 for an engine backup speed-sensor fault; some Cummins generator controllers use it for an EPS backup lost-sync warning; eBay’s Trading API uses 778 for an invalid or missing account type; and an Army rough-terrain container handler (RTCH) uses it for an internal transmission failure at clutch K2. Identify the product and capture the complete code before testing parts. The procedures below separate those meanings so you do not apply an engine-sensor repair to a generator, transmission, or software request.
What should I do first when I see error code 778?
Stop treating 778 as a standalone diagnosis. Record the exact screen or lamp, manufacturer, full model, controller or ECM name, code suffix, severity indicator, symptoms, and any companion codes. A dashboard code, generator control-panel warning, diagnostic-program message, and API response can all show “778” while referring to unrelated systems.

- Capture the complete code. Write down forms such as
778/CA778, the wording beside the number, warning or shutdown status, engine hours, and when the fault occurred. - Record companion codes. A second code can identify a power-supply or communications problem that must be addressed first.
- Find the exact manual revision. Use the operator or service manual for that manufacturer, model, engine, controller and software/API version. Do not substitute a manual for a similar-looking machine.

These definitions are not interchangeable. Even within one manufacturer, a different controller generation can assign a different description to the same number.

How do I troubleshoot Komatsu SAA6D114E-3 code 778 or CA778?
On a Komatsu SAA6D114E-3, 778/CA778 means the controller detected an abnormal signal from the engine’s backup speed sensor and is continuing with the Ne speed sensor. The documented effects are poor starting performance and reduced output. Test the circuit in the order below rather than automatically replacing a camshaft or speed sensor.
1. Confirm the code and check for CA187
Verify that the display shows 778 or CA778 and record every simultaneous code. If CA187 is present, the Komatsu troubleshooting information directs you to resolve that supply fault first, because an abnormal supply can produce misleading sensor symptoms.

With the ignition state and connector pinout specified by the Komatsu service procedure, measure the CAM SENSOR supply. The stated acceptable range is 4.75–5.25 V. Use the manual’s test points and meter settings; do not pierce insulation or back-probe an unknown terminal.
- A reading below or above the specified range points toward a supply, ground, wiring or controller problem rather than proving that the sensor itself is defective.
- If the supply is in range, continue with the sensor, mechanical clearance and signal-path checks.
3. Inspect the backup speed sensor and its clearance
Look for physical damage, contamination, loose mounting and incorrect clearance between the sensor and the rotating target. Measure or set clearance only by the engine manual’s method and specification. A sensor that looks intact can still produce an invalid signal if its gap is wrong.
4. Inspect the rotation-sensing ring
Examine the sensing ring for broken, missing or damaged teeth or other damage described in the service information. A failed target ring can mimic an electrical sensor failure because the sensor cannot detect a reliable speed pattern.

5. Check the harness and connectors
Trace the entire circuit between the backup speed sensor and the engine controller. Look for an open circuit, short to ground, short to power, rubbed insulation, corrosion, moisture, dirt, bent terminals, pushed-back pins and loose locking features. Perform continuity and short checks only with the connectors isolated as the manual requires; an ohmmeter on an energized circuit can damage electronics or produce a false result.

6. Evaluate the controller only after the circuit passes
If supply voltage, sensor condition, clearance, sensing ring, harness and connectors all meet the manual’s tests, the engine controller remains a possible cause. Follow the machine’s controller diagnostic and replacement procedure before condemning it. Controller replacement is not a first-line fix for 778.
What should I not do on the Komatsu case?
- Do not assume every 778 is a camshaft-sensor failure.
- Do not buy a replacement sensor before checking supply voltage, clearance, target ring and wiring.
- Do not bypass the backup sensor or continue operating with worsening starting or output symptoms.

Identify the controller before testing
Read the generator nameplate and control-panel model, then match it to the manual. Record whether the event is a warning, shutdown or latched fault, and capture other active codes. A PowerCommand 2100 procedure cannot be assumed to apply to a C1500D6E, and a code description from one revision may not apply to another.
Use qualified service support for generator work
Generator troubleshooting can involve engine movement, rotating parts, batteries, fuel, mains output and hazardous voltages. Do not repeatedly restart a generator that has shut down on a serious warning, and do not bypass an interlock or warning simply to keep it running. A technician may need the controller’s diagnostic interface and event history to distinguish synchronization, camshaft-signal and wiring faults.
How do I fix eBay API error 778?
In eBay’s Trading API error table, 778 means “Invalid or missing account type.” This is a request or account-configuration problem, not an engine, sensor or transmission fault.
- Log the complete API response, including the endpoint, operation, API version, request environment and timestamp.
