IRQL_UNEXPECTED_VALUE is Windows bug check 0x000000C8. It means the processor was running at an interrupt request level (IRQL) that did not match what Windows expected. Microsoft says the usual cause is a device driver or other low-level program that changes IRQL and fails to restore it. The code does not identify the faulty driver by itself, and it does not prove that your RAM, Windows installation or a particular brand of hardware is bad.
Work through the least disruptive checks first: remove recently added hardware, start in Safe Mode if necessary, inspect Device Manager, update or roll back the suspect driver, install Windows updates, and make sure the system drive has room. If crashes continue, collect a dump for analysis. Driver Verifier and recovery options are later steps because they can make the system less usable or affect files and applications.

IRQL is the interrupt request level used by Windows to control which kernel operations can interrupt others. A driver may temporarily raise IRQL while it performs a protected operation, such as acquiring a spin lock, and must return to the previous level when finished. Microsoft’s technical reference describes the usual failure this way: “This error is usually caused by a device driver or another lower-level program that changed the IRQL for some period and did not restore the original IRQL at the end of that period.”
The stop code is a symptom of that inconsistent kernel state, not a diagnosis of one component. A newly installed driver, an update, a recently added device, or another low-level utility can be involved. The code alone does not establish that the crash was caused by malware, defective memory, a corrupt Windows installation or any particular device.

Windows may restart immediately after displaying the blue screen. Photograph the screen or note the exact stop code before it disappears. If the same code returns, the timing of the first crash and any changes made just before it are valuable clues.
What should I do first after the blue screen?
Start with reversible actions. Do not begin by changing many drivers at once; doing so removes the evidence that can identify the trigger.
Disconnect hardware added shortly before the crashes
Shut down Windows completely. Unplug a newly installed USB device, expansion card, dock or other peripheral, and remove an internal component only if you can do so safely and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Start Windows without it and use the computer long enough to see whether the stop error returns. If stability returns, reconnect devices one at a time and test between each change. A device can be innocent while its driver is defective, so this test narrows the search rather than proving the hardware itself is bad.
Record the pattern
Write down whether the crash occurs during startup, after sign-in, while waking from sleep, or during a particular task. Note the driver or software update date, the device involved and whether the machine can remain idle. This chronology helps you choose between a rollback, an update and deeper dump analysis.
How do I start Windows in Safe Mode?
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers. If the crash does not occur there, a normal-startup driver or service becomes more likely, although Safe Mode is not proof of the cause.

When Windows still reaches the sign-in screen
- Hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- On the recovery menu, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- When the numbered list appears, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode. Choose 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking only when you need network access for a specific diagnostic step.
In Safe Mode, undo the most likely recent change first: remove a recently installed driver or device software, or use Device Manager to roll back the driver. Restart normally and test. If Windows will not stay up long enough to use the menus, interrupt startup two or three times by holding the power button during the boot process; Windows should enter its recovery environment, where the same Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings path is available.
How do I find and change the suspect driver?
Device Manager can show devices that Windows currently considers problematic. It cannot guarantee that the device with a warning icon caused 0xC8, so correlate what you see with the crash timeline.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand each category relevant to the recent change. Also look for a device with a yellow warning symbol or an entry named Unknown device.
- Right-click the suspect device and choose Properties. On the General tab, read the device status. On Driver, note the provider, date and version.
- If the problem began after a driver update, select Roll Back Driver when that button is available, follow the prompts and restart.
- If no rollback is available, choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers. Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when a newer package exists from the device manufacturer.
- If updating does not help and the device is not required for startup, use Disable device as a test. If the crashes stop, re-enable it and obtain a corrected driver rather than leaving essential hardware disabled.
- As a further test, choose Uninstall device, select the option to remove the driver package only if you understand the effect, and restart. Windows may reinstall a driver automatically; otherwise install a compatible package from the hardware manufacturer.
Change one device or driver at a time and keep a note of each version. Avoid driver packages from unknown download sites. If the machine is a laptop or a prebuilt desktop, the computer maker’s support page may provide a package adapted to that model.
How much free disk space does Windows need for this problem?
Check the drive that contains Windows, normally C:. Open Settings > System > Storage (or search for “Storage settings”) and inspect available space. Microsoft gives 10% to 15% free space as a general target; the exact requirement varies by configuration. Low space can prevent updates, dump creation and normal system maintenance, so move or delete files you no longer need and empty the Recycle Bin. Do not delete files from system folders merely to reach a percentage.
Which Windows updates should I install?
Install pending quality, security and hardware-related updates after backing up important work. In Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install what is offered and restart when requested. Check again after the restart because additional updates may appear only after the first pass.

If the blue screens began immediately after a Windows or driver update, record its date before changing anything. A driver rollback or uninstall is more informative than repeatedly installing and removing unrelated updates. Windows 8 and Windows 7 use different settings layouts and are outside Microsoft’s current general stop-code guidance for Windows 10 and 11; use the equivalent Windows Update and Device Manager controls available in your edition.
Can corrupted Windows files cause this stop code?
Microsoft’s stop-error guidance includes System File Checker (SFC) to check for and restore corrupted Windows system files. Because the 0xC8 reference identifies a typical driver or other low-level program fault, SFC is a general integrity check, not a proven code-specific cure.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator. Search for
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is working. - Read the final message. It may report that no integrity violations were found, that files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Restart and test before making another change.
If SFC reports unrepaired files, save that result for later support or dump analysis. Do not interpret a successful SFC run as evidence that a driver is healthy.
What should I do if the crashes keep returning?
At this point, separate ordinary recovery from advanced diagnosis. If Windows is usable, preserve your files and gather evidence before attempting disruptive changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCollect and inspect a kernel dump
Windows can write kernel-mode dump files after a bug check, depending on the dump settings and whether the crash completes far enough to create one. A dump’s existence and usefulness are not guaranteed by the stop-code name. In System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings, review Write debugging information and the dump location. Keep the next dump if one is created.

Microsoft’s 0xC8 reference points experienced debuggers to the !analyze extension. WinDbg, Microsoft’s Windows debugging tool, can open a dump and run !analyze -v. The output may identify a suspected module, stack or bug-check parameter, but a highlighted module is a lead rather than automatic proof. Compare it with the driver versions and hardware changes you recorded. If you cannot interpret kernel output, provide the dump and the exact crash history to qualified support instead of deleting drivers at random.
Use Driver Verifier only for a targeted investigation
Driver Verifier is an advanced diagnostic feature. Microsoft warns that it can consume substantial CPU, slow the computer, cause additional crashes and create dump files. Do not verify every driver at once.
- Save work and create a recovery plan before enabling it. If the system is already unstable, make sure you know how to reach Safe Mode.
- Open an administrator Command Prompt and run
verifierto open the graphical configuration tool. - Choose the standard settings, select drivers by name rather than selecting all drivers, and start with a recently updated or otherwise suspicious driver.
- Restart and reproduce the problem only long enough to collect evidence. Expect that Verifier may deliberately expose a driver fault and trigger another blue screen.
- When testing is complete, return to Safe Mode if necessary and run
verifier /resetfrom an administrator Command Prompt, then restart. Leaving Verifier enabled can cause unnecessary performance problems and crashes.
If the system repeatedly crashes before you can reset Verifier, use the recovery environment’s Command Prompt or Safe Mode and run the reset command there. A targeted result is more useful than a machine configured to stress every driver simultaneously.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen should I use Windows recovery or reinstall options?
Use recovery only after you have considered the effect on personal files, applications and settings. Microsoft lists options such as Startup Repair, System Restore, Uninstall Updates, Reset this PC and installation or recovery media, with availability depending on the Windows edition and the state of the system.
Choose the least disruptive option that matches the evidence
- Startup Repair: appropriate when Windows cannot start normally, but it is not a driver diagnosis.
- System Restore: useful when a restore point predates the crashes; review which programs and drivers will be affected.
- Uninstall Updates: reasonable when the timing clearly follows a recent Windows update.
- Reset this PC or reinstall: a last resort after backing up files and confirming you understand whether applications, settings and personal data will be removed.
A recovery USB or Windows installation drive can provide access to these tools when the internal installation will not boot. The USB itself does not repair the underlying driver fault. Back up important files before any option that can erase data, and read the confirmation screen rather than assuming that every reset preserves applications.

What should I avoid when troubleshooting 0x000000C8?
- Do not assume the code always means bad RAM, malware or a corrupt Windows installation.
- Do not install several unrelated driver packages at once; you will lose the ability to identify the change that mattered.
- Do not run Driver Verifier against every driver as a routine first step.
- Do not delete system files or use registry cleaners to chase the stop code.
- Do not treat a recovery drive as a tool that automatically finds and fixes the offending driver.
- Do not continue normal work without a backup when crashes are frequent; a sudden failure can interrupt file writes.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review certain settings and keep an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
What information should I give a support technician?
Provide the exact stop-code text and hexadecimal value, the date and frequency of crashes, whether Safe Mode is stable, the hardware or driver change that preceded the first failure, available system-drive space, Windows edition and build, and any dump-file analysis. Include the Device Manager driver provider and version for each suspect device. This concise timeline is more useful than saying only that “Windows blue-screened.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Is IRQL_UNEXPECTED_VALUE a sign that my computer has a virus?
The stop code does not identify malware. Microsoft’s documented usual cause is a driver or another low-level program that mishandles IRQL, so investigate driver and hardware changes first while maintaining your normal, separate antivirus protection.
Will reinstalling Windows definitely stop error 0xC8?
No. A reinstall can remove software and driver state, but it may not correct defective hardware or a driver that is reintroduced afterward. Treat it as a disruptive recovery choice, back up data first and confirm whether the selected option removes applications or personal files.
Where can I find evidence from an earlier IRQL crash?
If Windows was configured to create one and the crash completed, a kernel-mode dump may be available at the location shown in System Properties under Advanced, Startup and Recovery. The stop-code name alone does not guarantee that a usable dump exists.
How do I turn off Driver Verifier after testing?
Boot to Safe Mode or the recovery environment if normal startup is unstable, open an administrator Command Prompt and run verifier /reset. Restart afterward; leaving verification enabled can cause avoidable slowdowns and additional crashes.
