Error 1152 means a self-extracting Windows installer could not unpack one of its embedded files into the active temporary folder. The message itself is not a diagnosis: the Temp path may be missing or unwritable, its drive may be full or quota-limited, security software may have blocked the extracted file, the temporary contents may be stale, or the setup package may be damaged.
The safest repair is to test the active Temp path first, then check its environment variables, capacity and permissions, clean only removable contents, and retry with a fresh installer saved locally. Running the setup as administrator can help only when the failure is an access-control problem; it cannot repair a deleted Temp folder, a full drive, a blocked download or a defective package.

Self-extracting installers contain files that must be unpacked before the actual installation begins. During that extraction stage, the bootstrapper asks Windows for the temporary location assigned to the current process, writes an embedded file there, and then launches or copies it. If that write fails, the installer reports error 1152. Revenera’s InstallShield error reference states the wording as “1152 | Error extracting <file name> to the temporary location.”
The temporary location is normally controlled by the TEMP and TMP environment variables. It can be a per-user folder such as %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalTemp, a redirected drive, or an enterprise-managed profile location. The installer may run under a different account or security context than the command window you use, so both user and system variables can matter.

What usually causes the failure?
- The folder named by
TEMPorTMPdoes not exist, was deleted, or points to an invalid path. - Your account or the installer’s account cannot create files in that folder.
- The drive hosting Temp has insufficient free space, a storage quota, or a full roaming-profile location.
- Old temporary files, locked files, or filesystem errors interfere with extraction.
- Windows Security or another endpoint product blocks an executable or DLL that the installer writes to Temp.
- The downloaded setup file is incomplete, corrupted, launched from an unsuitable location, or contains a vendor-specific packaging defect.
Because these causes produce the same number, repeatedly clicking Setup or changing unrelated Windows settings is unlikely to help. Use the tests below to identify the branch that matches your machine.
Is error 1152 a virus warning, and is it safe to clear Temp?
Error 1152 alone does not prove malware. It only says extraction failed. A security product can still be the reason for the failure, so verify the publisher and review protection events before allowing the installer to run.

You can clear removable contents inside the active Temp folder, but do not delete the Temp directory itself. Close the failed setup and applications that may be using temporary files, remove only files Windows permits, and choose Skip when a file is locked. Never add a permanent, broad exclusion for %TEMP% merely because an installer failed.
How can I tell whether the problem affects one installer or Windows generally?
Start with scope and a direct write test. A single package failing while unrelated installers work points toward that package or its download. If every installer fails, prioritize the Temp path, storage, profile policy and endpoint controls.

How do I fix error 1152 step by step?
1. Close the failed setup and obtain a trustworthy local copy
Exit the installer and close programs that may hold temporary files. Delete the old package and download it again from the software publisher’s official site. Save the new file in a local folder such as Downloads or C:Installers. Do not launch it directly from a browser cache, network share, cloud-synchronization folder, external drive, or mounted ISO while diagnosing the problem.

Check that the file size looks reasonable. If the publisher supplies a SHA-256 hash, calculate the hash of your download and compare it with the published value. A single package that fails while other installers work is more likely damaged or vendor-specific than evidence that Windows itself is broken.
2. Test whether the active Temp folder can create and delete a file
Open Command Prompt normally and run these commands:

del "%TEMP%1152-test.txt"A successful test prints test and removes the file. “Access is denied,” “The system cannot find the path specified,” or a similar message means the current process cannot use the path. That points to a missing directory, an invalid variable, redirection, unavailable drive, permissions issue, or profile quota.
You can perform an equivalent PowerShell check:

Remove-Item $fIf New-TemporaryFile fails, record the exact error before changing anything. A successful command-window test proves that account can write to its Temp path; it does not prove that a setup launched under another account or by an enterprise service has the same access.
3. Inspect both TEMP and TMP variables
Open View advanced system settings, choose Environment Variables, and inspect TEMP and TMP under both User variables and System variables. Confirm that each path is intentional and that the folder exists. A common per-user value is %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalTemp, but redirected or managed paths are also possible.

If the expected per-user folder is missing, create the folder with the same name and retry the write test. Honeywell’s OnGuard installation guide documents a 1152 case in which the user’s Temp directory had been deleted and says recreating it resolved that condition. Do not begin by editing the registry or blindly replacing system-wide values; an incorrect global change can break other applications.
After changing a variable or creating a folder, close and reopen Command Prompt, PowerShell, and the installer. Processes that were already running retain the environment values they inherited when they started.
4. Clear removable Temp contents and check the correct drive
Press Windows key + R, enter %TEMP%, and press Enter. Select removable contents and delete them. Windows may report that some files are in use; choose Skip rather than forcing deletion. Leave the Temp directory itself in place.
Next, check free space on the drive that actually hosts the active Temp path. If TEMP points to another volume, free space on local C: alone is not enough. Hitachi’s installer documentation attributes error 1152 to insufficient capacity on the drive used to start the installer and instructs users to provide sufficient capacity, but it does not establish one universal free-space number. A roaming-profile location can also have a quota even when the disk appears to have room.
5. Use a temporary path override as a diagnostic
To isolate a bad or restricted original path, create a local folder and launch the setup from the same Command Prompt:

If the installer now works, the original Temp drive, path syntax, redirection, filesystem, or quota is implicated. Restore the normal settings after the test; this is an isolation technique, not a universal permanent fix. If mkdir or the setup still fails, note the exact message and continue with the security and package checks.
6. Check Windows Security and managed endpoint controls
Self-extracting installers often write executables or DLLs into a temporary directory, which can trigger endpoint protection. First verify that the download came from the legitimate publisher. Then open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history and review events at the time of the failure. Also check events in any managed third-party endpoint product.
If a trusted file was blocked, use the security product’s documented restore or allow-list process with administrator or IT approval. Apply the narrowest approval possible, retry the installation, and re-enable normal protection immediately. Do not disable protection broadly and do not create a permanent exclusion for the entire Temp directory. If the file’s publisher or integrity cannot be verified, obtain a new copy instead of bypassing the detection.
7. Should I run the installer as administrator?
Right-click the locally saved setup file and choose Run as administrator only after checking the Temp path and package. Elevation can help when the extraction account lacks permission to a protected location, but it does not recreate a missing directory, add space to a full or quota-limited drive, undo a security block, or repair a corrupt installer. If the Temp write test succeeds for your user account but Setup fails when elevated, compare the user and system Temp variables and review endpoint events rather than repeatedly escalating.
8. Retry once, then escalate by the failure pattern
After the relevant correction, reboot if the installer or security product requested it, then run the fresh local copy once. Keep the exact error text, installer version, Windows edition, Temp paths, and any protection event available for support. Use this decision table to choose the next owner:

What should I do when Temp is on a roaming or redirected profile?
Do not assume that a local disk with free space solves the problem. Datamine documents roaming network profiles with quota restrictions as a cause of extraction failures. Confirm the actual value of TEMP and TMP, identify the server or volume that stores that path, and ask IT to check quota, availability, permissions and policy. A local override can confirm the diagnosis, but enterprise administrators should decide whether the permanent path is changed.
When is the installer itself the problem?
If the Temp write test succeeds, the drive has capacity, no security event explains the block, and unrelated installers work, focus on the package. Bentley’s guidance for a 1152 case includes moving the file to a local desktop, checking that its size is reasonable, re-downloading, rebooting and retrying. Follow the publisher’s current support instructions and provide the package version and exact error text. A vendor may require a particular prerequisite order, command-line switch or replacement bootstrapper that cannot be inferred from error 1152 alone.

There is no reliable published statistic showing how often error 1152 occurs, no universal free-space minimum, and no single Windows-version-specific fix. The same number can arise from a workstation folder, a redirected enterprise profile, security software or a defective vendor package. Treat the result of your write test, storage check, security history and package comparison as the evidence for the next action rather than assuming one cause.

Not necessarily. A failed Temp write, full drive or security block can produce the same message. Corruption becomes more likely when the Temp test succeeds, other installers work and a fresh download or hash comparison changes the result.
