“Invalid Member” is not one universal Windows or application error. It is a message used by unrelated products, including SAP Business Planning and Consolidation (BPC), PracticeQ, and Anaplan XL Reporting. The correct fix depends on which application and module displayed it, the complete message, what you were doing, and whether one user, one member, or many records are affected. Before changing permissions or data, write down the product name, module, full error text, and the action immediately before the failure. Then match your situation to the product-specific procedures below. If your application is not one of these examples, use its own support documentation rather than applying another product’s remedy by analogy.
What does “Invalid Member” mean?
In a member-based system, a member is usually an item in a dimension, account structure, client list, business entity, or query reference. The message means that the application could not accept the member supplied in a request, report, formula, workflow, or data load. That can happen because the member is not authorized for the current user, the report retained an old context, the name is misspelled or formatted incorrectly, or the underlying member ID is blank or NULL.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese causes are not interchangeable. A PracticeQ access problem requires an administrator or practitioner to grant client access; an SAP BPC warning may involve a saved entity in an input schedule; an SAP master-data load can involve blank IDs; and Anaplan QueryEx can fail because of names, permissions, date formatting, or empty cells. Start by identifying the matching workflow.
Which details should I record before trying a fix?
Capture enough context for an administrator or support engineer to reproduce the failure. The same wording can describe a permission issue in one screen and a malformed data value in another.

#queryex!, and any member name or ID shown. - Action immediately before the error: note whether you signed in, opened an input schedule, followed a business-process-flow link, calculated a report, processed a dimension, or loaded master data.
- Scope: determine whether one user, one client/entity, one worksheet cell, one member, or many users and cells are affected.
- Recent changes: record permission changes, renamed members, new report templates, or imported data. Do not delete or overwrite source data while the cause is still unknown.

How do I fix “Invalid Member ID” in PracticeQ?
In the documented PracticeQ case, the account cannot access the client associated with the timeline, form, or appointment being managed. The remedy is to have the appropriate administrator or practitioner grant access, then verify which client accounts an assistant is assigned to. The PracticeQ support article was last updated March 26, 2026.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Confirm that the affected client is the one in the error
Look at the timeline, form, or appointment you were opening and record the client shown there. If another client works normally but this one fails, that pattern supports an access mismatch rather than a general application outage. Keep the full “Invalid Member ID” text for the administrator.
Ask an administrator or practitioner to grant access
Send the administrator or the practitioner responsible for the client the client name, the screen you were using, and the exact time of the failure. PracticeQ’s documented guidance is to have the appropriate person grant the account access to that client. Do not attempt to bypass the restriction by editing an ID in a URL or by copying another client’s record.
Check assistant assignments
If you are an assistant, review the accounts assigned to you through More → Team → Assistants. An assistant may be able to manage only the accounts assigned in that area. Ask the administrator to correct the assignment if the client is missing, then sign out and back in before testing the same timeline, form, or appointment.
When to escalate
If access has been granted and the same client still produces the error, provide PracticeQ support or your administrator with the full message, client identifier, affected screen, your role, and whether another user can open the record. Avoid changing client data until the access assignment and the exact record are confirmed.

How do I fix the SAP BPC EPM Add-in warning when opening an Input Schedule?
SAP Knowledge Base Article 2108332 describes a specific BPC 10.0 or 10.1 for NetWeaver scenario. A user follows a Business Process Flow link to an Input Schedule, but the report still contains a previously saved business entity. The warning is associated with the user not being authorized for that saved entity. This is a context-and-authorization mismatch, not proof that every “invalid member” message in SAP has the same cause.
Verify the workflow and platform
First confirm that the warning appears in the SAP BPC EPM Add-in, when opening an Input Schedule from a Business Process Flow link, and that the system is BPC 10.0 or 10.1 on NetWeaver. If the failure occurs during a dimension process or master-data load, use the separate SAP checks below instead.
Compare the linked entity with the saved entity
Ask the SAP administrator to compare the entity passed by the Business Process Flow link with the entity retained in the report or input schedule. The documented case occurs when those values differ and the user lacks authorization for the retained value. Record both values and the user role; this gives the administrator a precise context mismatch to investigate.
Have authorization and report context reviewed
An administrator should verify that the user is authorized for the entity the report actually requests and that the report is not retaining an obsolete entity from an earlier save. The public preview of Article 2108332 explains the saved-entity versus authorization condition but does not publish a complete, universal repair procedure. Do not infer a broader workbook-clearing or role redesign from that preview alone; follow the full SAP documentation available to your organization.

SAP Knowledge Base Article 2199900 identifies blank or NULL member IDs in BW InfoObjects as a cause of an invalid member ID error during master-data loading. Treat this as a data-quality investigation with your SAP administrator. The public article preview names the condition but does not expose enough detail to specify the complete correction safely.
Inspect the source InfoObject values
Check the source and staging records for the InfoObject involved in the load. Look specifically for member-ID fields that are empty or explicitly NULL, and note whether the bad rows are limited to one member, one load file, or a broader batch. Preserve a copy of the input and the load log before making changes.

Do not invent a replacement ID
A blank value may indicate an upstream mapping, extraction, or master-data problem. Do not substitute a guessed member, delete rows, or convert values merely to make the load complete. Have the SAP administrator validate the correct member-ID rule and use the complete SAP Knowledge Base guidance for Article 2199900.
Separate this from the BPC 7.5 dimension-processing case
SAP Knowledge Base Article 1578222 also confirms an invalid member ID during BPC 7.5 SP06 dimension processing, but its public preview does not expose the complete solution. If your error occurs while processing a dimension rather than loading master data, provide the release, dimension, process log, and failing member to an SAP administrator instead of applying the blank-ID hypothesis automatically.

How do I fix #queryex! in Anaplan XL Reporting?
Anaplan’s “QueryEx” documentation, last modified February 25, 2025, lists several independent causes: incorrect or invalid member names, formatting errors, access restrictions, date-format assumptions, and references to empty cells. An invalid member name in an XL3Member formula returns #mem!. A batch of formula errors can make multiple cells display #queryex!, so the visible status may represent more than one underlying problem.
Check member names exactly
Compare every member name used by the formula or query with the name currently defined in the Anaplan model. Look for spelling differences, changed names, extra spaces, and references to members that were removed or are outside the current hierarchy. Correct the source reference rather than typing a different member at random.
Check user access
Confirm that the affected user can access the lists, dimensions, and members referenced by the query. A query can be syntactically correct yet fail for a user who is restricted from the relevant information. If another authorized user can run the same report, include that comparison when escalating.
Check dates and empty cells
Review date inputs for the format expected by the model and formula. Also inspect cells feeding the query for blanks; Anaplan identifies references to empty cells as a common QueryEx source. Do not fill an empty cell with a fabricated date or member merely to suppress the status, because that changes the report’s meaning.

Trace the query and formula errors
Use the query-tracing tools described by Anaplan to inspect the generated query text and formula-error details. In Excel, use Extras → Trace formula errors where that command is available; in the web experience, use the error log. Work through each reported cell or formula, because fixing the first visible #queryex! may reveal another batched error underneath.
What does “invalid member” mean in a request or query outside these products?
A Borsa İstanbul-hosted System Error Messages Reference Manual credited to Nasdaq explains the generic condition as: “An invalid member was encountered in a request or a query.” Its user action is to check the member specified in the request or query. The manual also lists lack of permission to access information related to that member as a possible cause.
Use that wording as a diagnostic checklist, not as a product-specific repair. Verify the exact member spelling or identifier, confirm that the account is allowed to access it, and compare a failing request with a known-good request. If the application has its own administrator, send the complete request, response, and account scope rather than changing the member definition blindly.
How can I tell which cause matches my symptoms?

|---|---|---|
| PracticeQ timeline, form, or appointment | The user lacks access to the client | Administrator/practitioner access and assistant assignments under More → Team → Assistants |
| SAP BPC EPM Input Schedule opened from a Business Process Flow | A saved entity differs from the linked entity and is unauthorized | Compare the report’s retained entity with the entity passed by the flow |
| SAP BPC master-data load | Blank or NULL member IDs in a BW InfoObject |

| SAP BPC 7.5 SP06 dimension processing | An invalid member ID during dimension processing | Capture the process log and consult the complete SAP article |

What should I send to support when none of these fixes works?
Send a compact, reproducible incident report rather than only the phrase “Invalid Member.” Include:
- the product, module, edition, and version;
- the exact full message, including codes such as
#queryex!or#mem!; - the screen, report, formula, workflow, or load that failed;
- the member name or ID, with sensitive client or financial information redacted according to your policy;
- the user role and whether another authorized user sees the same result;
- the relevant log, trace, or screenshot, plus the time and timezone; and
- recent permission, hierarchy, template, or source-data changes.
Ask the support team to identify whether the member is unauthorized, incorrectly named, blank or NULL, or malformed by formatting. That classification determines whether the next action belongs in permissions, report context, master data, or formula repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not treat the phrase as a universal error. The documented products use it for different workflows and causes.
- Do not guess a replacement member. A plausible name can point a report or load to the wrong business entity or client.
- Do not broaden permissions automatically. Grant only the client, entity, dimension, or list access required by the user’s role.
- Do not erase report context or source rows before preserving evidence. Saved entities, load files, and traces may be needed to prove what changed.
- Do not assume a multi-cell status has one cause. Anaplan’s batched formula errors can place the same status in several cells that need separate inspection.

Frequently asked questions
Can restarting the computer fix an “Invalid Member” error?
A restart can clear a temporary session or refresh a sign-in token, but it does not grant client or entity authorization and does not repair a blank member ID. Restart only after recording the message, and treat the result as a clue about session state rather than proof of a permanent fix.

Should I reinstall the application?
Reinstallation is usually not the first response to a member-validation error. The documented cases concern access, saved report context, model names, formatting, empty cells, or source data; reinstalling does not correct those values. Preserve logs and have the product administrator verify the relevant member and permissions first.
Why can one user open a member while another cannot?
Member visibility can be role- or account-specific. PracticeQ explicitly ties the documented error to client access, and the generic request guidance lists permission to member information as a possible cause. Compare the two users’ assigned clients, entities, lists, or roles without copying privileges wholesale.
What if the member was recently renamed?
Update references only after confirming the current canonical name in the product’s model or directory. A renamed member can leave saved reports, formulas, or workflow links pointing to the old value, while a different spelling may refer to a separate member. Keep the old and new names in the support ticket so the administrator can check mappings and retained context.
Is an invalid member ID always a data-corruption problem?
No. SAP’s documented examples include authorization and saved-entity context issues as well as blank or NULL IDs during loading. Classify the workflow first; only the load scenario specifically identifies blank or NULL member IDs in the available documentation.
