“Error resolving driver libraries” means DBeaver cannot assemble the JDBC files needed to open your database connection. The usual fix is to open Database → Driver Manager, edit the affected driver, and inspect Libraries. Replace an unavailable Maven entry—especially one ending in RELEASE—with a published version, correct the driver-download proxy, or add the compatible vendor JAR manually. Save the driver and run Test Connection. This error concerns driver files and dependency resolution, not your SQL username or password.

What does “Error resolving driver libraries” mean in DBeaver?

DBeaver connects through JDBC drivers: Java libraries, normally one or more .jar files, that know how to communicate with a particular database. DBeaver can download those files and their dependencies from Maven repositories, but resolution fails when an artifact is no longer published, a dependency is missing, the repository cannot be reached, or the JAR requires a newer Java runtime.

You may see several related messages:

  • Error resolving driver libraries
  • Reason: Error resolving dependencies
  • Maven artifact '...:RELEASE' not found
  • Most likely required jar files are missing.

If the driver appears to download but the next error says DBeaver cannot create the driver instance, treat that as a second-stage dependency or Java-compatibility problem rather than a credential failure.

There are two separate stages to keep in mind. First, DBeaver must resolve and place the libraries on the driver classpath. Second, Java must be able to load the selected driver class and all classes it needs. A successful download does not guarantee that the driver can run, and a valid database login cannot compensate for a missing JDBC class.

How do I identify the broken driver and artifact?

Start in Driver Manager so you can see the exact driver definition instead of guessing which database library is missing.

  1. Open Database → Driver Manager.
  2. Select the driver used by the failed connection and choose Edit.
  3. Open the Libraries tab.
  4. Record every listed Maven coordinate, version, local file, and warning. Coordinates normally identify a group, artifact, and version.

The Libraries panel also contains Add Artifact, Download/Update, Add File, Find Class, and Classpath. The exact failing entry matters: changing an unrelated library can leave the original resolution error untouched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look at the complete list, not just the first red or warning entry. A driver definition can contain a primary JDBC artifact plus logging, authentication, encryption, or vendor-specific companion libraries. Note whether each item is a Maven artifact or a local file, whether a version is explicit, and whether a path points to a file that still exists. Save a copy of the list for comparison if another workstation has a working connection.

If several database products have similar names, verify the driver selected by the connection. Editing a PostgreSQL, SQLite, or vendor-specific definition while the connection uses another driver will not change the failing classpath.

How do I replace an obsolete RELEASE Maven artifact?

A Maven coordinate ending in RELEASE asks the repository for a moving “latest” release. If that metadata is unavailable or the artifact was removed, DBeaver reports Maven artifact '...:RELEASE' not found. Replace it with a concrete version that is actually published for your database driver.

  1. In Libraries, select the entry whose version is RELEASE or whose download reports “not found.”
  2. Choose a specific version supported by the database vendor and by your DBeaver Java runtime. Do not copy a SQLite version or another database-specific example to a different driver.
  3. Use Add Artifact to enter the corrected coordinates, or remove the obsolete entry and add the replacement.
  4. Click Download/Update, confirm that the JAR and its dependencies appear without warnings, then save the driver.
  5. Return to the connection and select Test Connection.

Pinning a real version is more reproducible than relying on a floating label: future repository changes cannot silently substitute a different driver. Keep the chosen version documented if the connection is shared with a team.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that the newest number is automatically the correct one. Check the database driver vendor’s release information and the Java level used by your DBeaver installation. A driver can be published yet still be unusable on an older runtime. Conversely, an older published release may be the appropriate choice when a managed desktop has a fixed Java version.

When you add a replacement, remove the unresolved coordinate rather than leaving both entries active. Keeping a broken artifact can cause DBeaver to retry it, while keeping multiple versions of the same driver can create classpath conflicts. After downloading, expand or inspect the Libraries list to ensure the intended version, not an older cached copy, is the one selected.

How do I fix a proxy or repository access problem?

If the artifact is valid but DBeaver cannot reach Maven, configure the proxy used specifically for driver downloads. These settings are separate from any proxy configured for database traffic.

  1. Open Window → Preferences → Connections → Drivers.
  2. Enter the corporate proxy host and port. Add a username and password only when your proxy requires authentication.
  3. Apply the settings and retry Download/Update in the driver’s Libraries tab.
  4. If it still fails, ask your network administrator to permit the organization’s approved HTTPS Maven endpoints and to check TLS inspection or authentication logs.

A historical DBeaver issue from 2020 described a request being redirected toward http://central.maven.org when HTTPS access to repo1.maven.org failed. That old behavior is not a safe current workaround: use the current DBeaver proxy and repository configuration and approved HTTPS access rather than copying an insecure HTTP address.

Proxy configuration will not repair a misspelled coordinate or an artifact that no longer exists. Confirm both network reachability and publication status.

Test the two possibilities separately. If a known-published artifact fails only on the corporate workstation, the proxy, firewall, TLS inspection, or authentication policy is a likely factor. If the same coordinate fails on an unrestricted machine with a “not found” response, correct the coordinate or version first. Ask the network administrator to allow the approved HTTPS repository endpoint rather than requesting an insecure exception.

Remember that this preference controls DBeaver’s driver downloads. A database connection may use a separate proxy or direct route. Changing database connection proxy settings will not necessarily make Maven resolution work, and changing the driver-download proxy will not route SQL traffic through that proxy.

How can I install a DBeaver driver without internet access?

Use a manual, compatible JDBC JAR when the workstation is offline or policy blocks Maven. Obtain the file from the database vendor, a trusted project release, or an approved Maven Central download on a separate machine; verify that its version supports your database server and Java runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Database → Driver Manager, select the driver, choose Edit, and open Libraries.
  2. Remove or disable the unresolved Maven entry if it causes a download attempt, then click Add File.
  3. Select the JDBC .jar you transferred to the offline machine.
  4. Click Find Class and choose the driver class DBeaver detects. If no class is found, the file may not be the JDBC driver JAR or may be incompatible.
  5. Save the driver and run Test Connection.

Some drivers require more than one file. Add every required transitive dependency with Add File; adding only the main JAR can lead to a later “cannot create driver instance” error. Keep the JARs together in a controlled folder so another user can reproduce the setup.

On the connected machine, collect the main vendor JAR and all dependencies that the published driver definition requires. Transfer the complete set, not just the file whose name looks like the driver. On the offline computer, add each file, use Find Class after the set is present, and check the resulting Classpath. If the class finder shows no suitable class, confirm that you downloaded a JDBC library rather than a server distribution, source archive, or unrelated Java utility.

Manual installation does not bypass Java compatibility. A copied JAR still must support the runtime used by DBeaver. It also does not repair a wrong driver class selection. If the class loads but a feature later fails, revisit the dependency list and add any companion library documented as required for that feature.

Where does DBeaver store downloaded driver files?

DBeaver stores Maven-downloaded files below its DBeaverData data root. The documented cache locations are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Operating system Maven driver cache
Windows %APPDATA%DBeaverDatadriversmavenmaven-central
macOS ~/Library/DBeaverData/drivers/maven/maven-central/
Linux $XDG_DATA_HOME/DBeaverData/drivers/maven/maven-central/

Close DBeaver before changing files in the cache. If a download was interrupted, preserve a backup of the directory, remove only the affected partial or corrupted artifact, reopen DBeaver, and use Download/Update to fetch it again. Cache cleanup cannot make an unpublished artifact available and should not be your first response to a coordinate error.

The path is a cache, not the place to edit the driver definition. Removing files there can force a fresh download, but it will not change the Maven coordinates shown in Driver Manager. If the same invalid coordinate remains, DBeaver will simply try to resolve it again.

Close all DBeaver windows before backing up or removing a file so an active download does not recreate a partial artifact. Preserve the original directory first, then remove only the affected item. If the redownload succeeds, compare the Libraries panel and run Test Connection; if it fails with the same “not found” message, return to the coordinate and repository checks.

What if the JAR is present but DBeaver still cannot create the driver instance?

At that point, check the classpath and Java compatibility rather than repeatedly downloading the same file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for missing dependent JARs

In Libraries, confirm that every dependency required by the driver is listed and that no file path points to a deleted or inaccessible location. A driver may load its main class only after companion libraries are present. Use Find Class again after adding dependencies, then save and test.

“Most likely required jar files are missing” can refer to a transitive dependency rather than the main driver file. The primary artifact may be visible while a class used during startup is absent. Check every warning and local path, and avoid assuming that one large vendor download contains all dependencies required by DBeaver’s definition.

Check the Java runtime

A JAR compiled for a newer Java release will not load on an older runtime. Check which Java runtime DBeaver is using and select a driver release compatible with it, or run DBeaver with an approved newer Java runtime. The exact compatible version depends on the database driver; do not infer it from the database server version alone.

This issue can explain why two otherwise identical workstations behave differently. Compare the runtime used by DBeaver, not merely the Java version installed somewhere else on the operating system. Changing the database server version or resetting a password will not fix a class-file incompatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the selected class and classpath

Make sure the driver class selected in the Libraries panel belongs to the JAR you installed. Duplicate versions of the same driver can create classpath conflicts, so remove stale copies and leave one intentional version where possible.

After every classpath change, save the driver and test again. A change from dependency-resolution text to an authentication, network, or server error is useful evidence: it means the JDBC driver has loaded and troubleshooting has moved to a later connection layer.

Should I edit DBeaver’s driver configuration file?

Most users should use Driver Manager. For managed desktops, automated rollouts, or a repeatable team configuration, DBeaver stores driver definitions in workspace/.metadata/.config/drivers.xml.

Entries in that file can reference Maven coordinates or local JAR paths. An administrator can deploy a known-good definition this way, but a malformed XML edit can affect the workspace and is harder to diagnose than a Driver Manager change. Back up the workspace before editing, use paths valid on the target machines, and test the deployed definition with a non-production connection.

A local path that works on one computer may not exist on another, so managed deployments should use a consistent folder layout or distribute the referenced JARs as part of the deployment. Maven coordinates are easier to repeat when every machine can reach the approved repository. For restricted networks, distribute the complete local-JAR set and validate it on a clean workspace.

Keep a known-good copy of the configuration so an update can be rolled back. If a hand edit produces an XML or classpath error, return to Driver Manager or restore the backup rather than making multiple untracked changes.

Which recovery method should I choose?

Choose based on repository access, artifact availability, dependency completeness, and Java support:

Situation Best approach Main trade-off
Maven is reachable and the coordinate is published Correct the coordinate and use Download/Update Fastest setup, but depends on repository access
The entry uses RELEASE or another unavailable version Pin a concrete published version Requires choosing and maintaining a version
Offline or tightly restricted network Add the vendor JDBC JAR and all required dependencies with Add File Manual updates and dependency tracking
Many managed workstations Deploy a tested drivers.xml definition Repeatable, but sensitive to workspace paths and XML errors
JAR downloads but the driver instance fails Check dependencies, classpath, and Java compatibility May require a different driver release or runtime

Use the least complex option that matches the environment. Maven resolution is generally simplest when the repository is reachable and the artifact is published. A manual JAR is more practical when the machine is offline or network policy blocks repository access. A configuration-file deployment is useful when an administrator must repeat the same tested definition across many workspaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever option you choose, evaluate all four axes: can the machine reach Maven, does the exact version exist, are all transitive dependencies present, and can the selected JAR run on DBeaver’s Java runtime? A solution that satisfies only one or two of these conditions may reproduce the same error on the next test.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What should I check before repeating Test Connection?

  • The erroring driver is selected in Driver Manager, not a similarly named database driver.
  • Every Maven artifact has a real, published version rather than an obsolete RELEASE label.
  • The driver-download proxy is configured under Window → Preferences → Connections → Drivers.
  • Manual JARs came from an approved vendor or project source and include required dependencies.
  • The JAR supports the Java runtime used by DBeaver.
  • No duplicate or stale JAR is taking precedence on the classpath.
  • DBeaver was closed before cache files were backed up or removed.

Also verify that you saved the edited driver definition, that the selected class belongs to the installed JAR, and that any local paths are readable by your user account. If a proxy requires authentication, confirm that its credentials and host details are current. If a corporate network uses TLS inspection, have the administrator verify that the approved HTTPS repository request is not being blocked or redirected.

After those checks, save the driver and run Test Connection again. If the message changes from dependency resolution to authentication, networking, or database-server errors, the JDBC driver has loaded and the investigation has moved to a different layer.

How can I prevent the error from returning?

Pin a tested driver version instead of using RELEASE, record the complete Libraries list, and keep the required JARs or Maven coordinates with the team’s deployment instructions. Test the definition on a clean workspace before rolling it out broadly. When a driver is upgraded, change one intentional version at a time and retain the previous working definition so it can be restored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For offline installations, keep the main JAR and every dependency in a controlled folder and document which Java runtime they support. For managed installations, deploy a validated drivers.xml only after confirming that its local paths or repository access apply to every target machine. These practices make it easier to distinguish a changed driver definition from a database, network, or credential problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will reinstalling DBeaver fix “Error resolving driver libraries”?

Usually not. Reinstallation does not make an unpublished Maven artifact available or add a proxy exception, and it may leave the same workspace and driver cache in place. Reinstall only becomes reasonable after backing up the workspace and confirming that the installation or bundled Java runtime itself is damaged.

Can I keep using a driver that has a missing optional dependency?

Only if the database driver documentation explicitly marks that library optional for the features you use. A connection may open while a later operation—such as authentication, encryption, or a vendor-specific data type—fails when the omitted class is first called.

Why does the same driver work for a coworker but not on my computer?

The two machines may have different Java runtimes, proxy policies, cached JARs, or workspace driver definitions. Compare the Libraries lists and Java runtime details rather than copying only the connection settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I prevent this error on a team project?

Pin a tested driver version, record all required JARs and their checksums in your deployment documentation, and test the definition on a clean workspace. For managed installations, distribute a validated driver configuration and keep a rollback copy when upgrading.

Does this error mean my database password is wrong?

No. Driver-library resolution happens before DBeaver can authenticate to the database. Fix the Maven artifact, proxy, JAR, dependency, or Java problem first. A password or server-permission error appears only after the JDBC driver has loaded and the connection reaches the database.

Can I use any JAR with the right-looking file name?

No. Add the JDBC JAR supplied by the database vendor or a trusted project release, choose its documented driver class with Find Class, and include its required dependencies. A similarly named utility or server JAR may not contain the class DBeaver needs.

Why does clearing the cache sometimes do nothing?

The cache contains downloaded files, not the driver definition itself. If the Libraries entry still points to an unpublished version, DBeaver will request that same artifact again. Correct the coordinate first, and clear only a confirmed partial or corrupted cached file while DBeaver is closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are driver-download proxy settings the same as database proxy settings?

No. Configure driver-download access under Window → Preferences → Connections → Drivers. Database connection proxy settings control a different traffic path and will not necessarily allow Maven downloads.

Can I copy a proxy URL from an old DBeaver issue?

Do not copy an old HTTP workaround. A 2020 issue described redirection toward http://central.maven.org when HTTPS access failed. Use the current DBeaver proxy and repository settings and your organization’s approved HTTPS endpoints.

How do I install a driver on an offline computer?

On a connected, approved machine, obtain the compatible vendor or trusted project JAR and every required dependency. Transfer the files, open Driver Manager → Edit → Libraries on the offline computer, use Add File for each JAR, choose the class with Find Class, save, and run Test Connection.

The Bottom Line

Fix DBeaver’s driver classpath, not the database credentials: replace unavailable Maven coordinates, configure the driver-download proxy, or add a compatible vendor JAR and all dependencies. Then verify Java compatibility, save the driver, and run Test Connection.
