ERROR_EVT_INVALID_EVENT_DATA is Windows Event Log error 15005 (0x3A9D). It means that an event provider emitted data that does not match the event-template definition in its manifest. The code identifies a provider-level data-contract mismatch; it does not identify the application, driver, or service, and it does not prove malware, data loss, disk failure, or broad Windows corruption.
The safest fix is therefore to identify the provider in Event Viewer, preserve the complete event XML, and then update, repair, reinstall, or—when supported—roll back that provider. If you maintain the provider, correct the runtime payload so its fields, types, ranges, names, count, and encoding match the manifest. A one-off event without any visible symptom can usually be documented and monitored rather than “cleaned” with unrelated registry or junk-file utilities.

Microsoft defines error 15005 (hexadecimal 0x3A9D) as ERROR_EVT_INVALID_EVENT_DATA: “The event data raised by the provider is not compatible with the event template definition in the provider’s manifest.” In practical terms, a component that publishes Windows Event Log records supplied a payload that its own schema does not describe correctly.
An event provider can be a Windows component, an installed application, a service, or a device-related package. The generic error number does not tell you which one generated the record. The provider name, channel, event ID, timestamp, and XML details are the evidence needed to choose a repair. Treating 15005 as if it had one universal command leads to random changes that do not address the component publishing the invalid payload.

What the error does not prove
- It does not, by itself, show that your PC is infected or that an attacker changed the log.
- It does not establish data loss, a failing disk, or operating-system corruption.
- It does not identify a particular driver, game, service, or application without the event’s provider metadata.
- It does not establish that deleting logs, cleaning the registry, or removing temporary files will repair the provider’s manifest/payload mismatch.
Is Windows error 15005 dangerous, or can I ignore it?
The risk depends on the pattern and on what the named provider does. A single 15005 record with no crash, missing feature, connection failure, or other symptom is often an event-rendering problem that can be recorded and watched. Repeated records that occur at the same time as a service failure, application crash, device problem, or an update-related regression deserve active remediation.
Use the event as a diagnostic signal, not as a verdict about the whole computer. If the provider is functioning and the record is isolated, avoid deleting evidence before you know what generated it. If a feature is failing, fix the associated provider rather than applying a generic “event log repair.”

Start by capturing the complete record in Event Viewer. The provider identity and XML usually provide more actionable information than the 15005 number itself.
- Open Event Viewer from the Windows Start menu or by running
eventvwr.msc. - Navigate to the log where the record appears. In the middle pane, select the 15005 event and note the Provider (also shown as Source in some views), Event ID, Log or channel, Level, and the exact timestamp.
- Open the Details tab and select XML View. Copy the complete XML into a text file before clearing, exporting, or filtering the log.
- Look for the provider name, event identifier, channel, and any
ProcessingErrorData. That area may expose values such asErrorCode,DataItemName, andEventPayload. - Record the installed version of the application, service, driver package, or Windows component that corresponds to the provider. Keep the event timestamp in local time and, if possible, note the UTC value shown in the XML.
Do not infer the culprit from the 15005 number alone. Two unrelated providers can produce the same Windows error code, while one provider can produce it in more than one channel. The XML is the durable evidence you can send to a vendor or technician.
What should I save for support?
Save an exported event or the copied XML, plus a short timeline: when the error first appeared, whether it follows an installation or update, how often it repeats, and what user-visible symptom occurs at the same time. Include the provider and application or driver version. Avoid editing the XML; support staff need the original field names and values.
Could a recent update or installation have triggered it?
Correlation with a recent change is useful, but it is an inference rather than proof that the newest update is defective. Compare the first occurrence with the installation or update history for applications, drivers, Windows components, and other provider packages.

- Write down the first timestamp from the Event Viewer record.
- Review recently installed or updated software and drivers around that time.
- Check whether the same provider generated records before the change or only afterward.
- Reproduce the associated action, if safe, and see whether a new 15005 record appears with the same provider and event ID.
- Keep the XML from before and after any repair or rollback so you can show whether the payload changed.
Timing alone should not justify removing a security update or making an unsupported system change. Use it to select the provider package for inspection, then follow that vendor’s supported update, repair, or rollback procedure.

How can I fix ERROR_EVT_INVALID_EVENT_DATA as a Windows user or administrator?
Once the provider is known, target that component. The following order preserves evidence and favors reversible actions.
1. Install the provider’s current update
Check the publisher’s normal update channel for the application, service, or driver identified in the event. Use the package intended for your Windows edition and hardware, and reboot only when the installer requests it. Afterward, repeat the action that previously produced the event and inspect Event Viewer for a new record.
An update is most appropriate when the provider is actively maintained and the event began after an older release. Keep the old event XML; an update can stop new errors without explaining the original mismatch, and support may still request the earlier record.
2. Repair the associated application or component
If Windows or the application’s installer offers a Repair option, use it for the provider named in the event. Repair is generally less disruptive than removing the program because it can restore provider resources while retaining configuration. Follow the product’s own instructions and note whether the repair changes its version.
For a Windows component, use the supported maintenance option provided for that component rather than deleting event-log files. The error concerns the data contract used when the provider publishes an event; deleting the record does not rewrite that contract.
3. Reinstall when repair does not restore the provider
Reinstall the application or provider package if its repair operation fails or if the provider files were replaced incompletely. Before uninstalling, export the event XML and record settings that you may need to restore. Download the installer from the publisher’s normal channel, install the correct architecture and release, then reproduce the problem.
If the provider is bundled with another product, reinstall the parent product rather than copying individual manifest or DLL files from an unrelated computer. A mismatched resource can create a second compatibility problem.

4. Test a supported rollback after a clear regression
If 15005 started immediately after a provider update and the publisher documents a rollback, test the previous provider version while preserving both the pre-rollback and post-rollback XML. Rollback is a diagnostic inference, not a universal Microsoft remedy. Do not remove security updates or use an unapproved package merely to make the event disappear.
5. Monitor an isolated event
When the provider is functioning, the record is one-off, and there is no visible symptom, document it and monitor recurrence. Record the provider, channel, event ID, and timestamp so you can recognize a pattern later. Avoid repeatedly clearing the log: doing so removes the history needed to establish frequency and timing.
6. Escalate recurring failures with the XML attached
If the event repeats or coincides with a crash, failed service, or device malfunction, send the exported XML and provider version to the publisher’s support team or a Windows technician. State what action triggers the event and whether an update, repair, reinstall, or supported rollback changed the behavior. The support request should identify the provider rather than simply saying “Event Viewer shows 15005.”
What if Event Viewer does not reveal the provider?
An incomplete view, a filtered log, or a record whose rendering failed can hide useful context. Reopen the event, switch to XML View, and save the entire record. Check the channel and event ID shown in the XML, not only the summary text in the General tab.
If the provider remains unknown, do not guess at a driver or application. Correlate the timestamp with services and software that were active, then collect several occurrences to see whether a stable provider identifier appears. If no provider can be established and the event accompanies a functional failure, escalate the XML and timeline to a technician. Without provider metadata, a targeted repair cannot be selected reliably.
How do developers fix the provider’s invalid event data?
For a provider owner, 15005 means the runtime event payload and the manifest template disagree. The fix is in the provider’s event-generation and deployment process, not in a user’s event-log settings.
Compare the emitted payload with the manifest
Inspect the event template in the provider manifest and compare it with the values supplied at runtime. Verify all of the following:

- The number of fields is identical.
- Field names and ordering match the template expected by consumers.
- Each value uses the declared type, including numeric width and signedness where applicable.
- Values stay within the ranges the template and provider logic allow.
- Text encoding and termination rules match the manifest.
- Optional or conditional data is represented exactly as the template specifies.
A payload that renders in one internal test can still fail for a different locale, input length, device state, or code path. Exercise the paths that produced the original event and validate the serialized data before publishing it.

After correcting the payload or manifest, rebuild the provider resources and deploy them as a matched set. Reproduce the event on a clean or representative system, then verify that Event Log consumers can render the event without a processing error. Keep the provider version and manifest revision together so support can identify exactly which contract was deployed.
Capture extended status at the failing API boundary
If the failure occurs during an Event Log API operation, call EvtGetExtendedStatus immediately after the failing call, on the same thread and before another Windows Event Log API call. Microsoft specifies this order because a later Event Log call can replace the current extended-error context. Store the returned text with the provider’s diagnostic record.
// Pseudocode: call immediately after the failing Event Log operation
DWORD status = GetLastError();
WCHAR buffer[1024];
DWORD used = 0;
DWORD chars = EvtGetExtendedStatus(1024, buffer, &used);
// Preserve status, chars, and buffer before another Event Log API call.
The example illustrates call timing, not a complete provider implementation. Use the Windows SDK declarations and error handling appropriate to your language, and ensure the buffer-size and return-value handling follows the API contract.
Which remediation path fits the evidence?
| Situation | Best next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Provider identified; one occurrence; no symptom | Save XML and monitor | The code alone does not establish damage, and deleting evidence provides no repair. |
| Provider identified; repeated records with an application or service failure | Update, repair, or reinstall that provider | The component generating the incompatible payload is the repair target. |
| Error began after a provider update and rollback is supported | Test the documented previous version | This can confirm a regression while preserving a reversible path. |
| Provider unknown after XML review | Collect additional records and escalate | A generic code cannot select a safe, component-specific fix. |
| You maintain the provider | Align payload and manifest, rebuild, redeploy, and retest | The incompatibility is in the provider’s event data contract. |
When should I contact Microsoft or a technician?
Escalate when the provider cannot be identified, when the event repeats despite a supported provider repair, or when a critical function fails at the same time. Include the XML, provider and product versions, channel, event ID, timestamps, reproduction steps, and the result of each change. This gives a support engineer enough context to distinguish a rendering-only record from a provider failure affecting operation.

Do not present 15005 as proof of a compromised system. If you have independent security indicators, handle those through your normal security process; the event code itself is only a statement about event-data compatibility.

Can this error stop a game or application from launching?
It can appear alongside a provider-related failure, but the number alone does not establish that it caused the launch problem. Compare timestamps and reproduce the launch while watching for the same provider and event ID.
