If Windows reports an audio failure as 0x80070057, first verify the characters and where the message appeared. The code is a generic invalid-parameter status—Microsoft defines it as “One or more arguments are not valid” and, in setup guidance, “The parameter is incorrect.” It does not by itself prove that your speakers, headset, sound card, codec or driver has failed. Correct the selected output, volume, enhancements and permissions first; then repair the audio device driver or Windows services according to the symptom. If the message actually appeared in Windows Update or Windows Setup, follow the system-repair branch instead of replacing audio hardware.
What does audio error 0x80070057 mean?
0x80070057 is a broad Windows status associated with an invalid argument or incorrect parameter. In an audio context, Windows may be unable to use a selected device, apply a setting, open a recording endpoint or complete a diagnostic action. The same value can also appear during Windows Update or Windows Setup, where it points toward configuration, permissions or damaged Windows files rather than an audio component.

The title’s 0X800700057 contains an extra zero compared with the documented 0x80070057. Read the original dialog carefully and copy the code exactly. Also note whether it came from a playback or recording troubleshooter, a media application, Device Manager, Windows Update or Windows Setup. That location determines the correct repair path.
Which checks should I make before changing drivers?
Use reversible sound-setting checks first. They can restore audio when the device and driver are healthy but Windows is sending sound to the wrong endpoint or applying an incompatible enhancement.

- Select the intended output. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound. Under output, choose the speakers, headset, monitor or other device you actually want to hear.
- Check volume and mute controls. Raise the Windows volume, check the application’s own volume control, and inspect any physical mute key or headset switch.
- Set the default playback device. Select More sound settings > Playback, right-click the intended device and choose Set as Default Device. If several HDMI, Bluetooth and analog endpoints are listed, test each relevant one.
- Turn off audio enhancements. Return to the device’s sound properties and set Audio enhancements to Off, then play a test sound. Enhancement packages can reject a parameter even when ordinary playback works.
- Test with a simple source. Try a Windows system sound or a local media file. If only one game or media app fails, the app may be selecting its own output device or passing the invalid parameter; repair that app’s audio setting before changing Windows drivers.
For Windows 10, the wording and layout can differ, but the same checks—output selection, default playback device, volume and enhancements—are available from Settings > System > Sound and the classic Sound control panel.
How do I run Windows’ audio diagnostics?
Windows 11’s Get Help application can run the automated audio troubleshooter. Open Get Help, search for audio or sound problems, and follow its prompts while the affected device is connected.

Run the diagnostic once for playback and, if applicable, once for recording. A playback pass does not test microphone permissions or the recording endpoint.
What should I do if Windows says no audio output device is installed?
An absent device is a visibility or driver problem until proven otherwise. Check Device Manager before buying hardware.

Enable or reveal the device
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the audio device is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device.
- If it is not listed, select View > Show hidden devices.
- Then choose Action > Scan for hardware changes. Windows may rediscover an endpoint that was disconnected logically after an update or restart.
Also check whether the computer’s manufacturer lists a separate audio device under another category, such as an audio controller attached to a chipset. Avoid installing a driver for a similar-looking model; use the exact PC, motherboard or sound-device model and the Windows edition shown on the support page. Install the package, restart Windows, and test the output again.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How do I update, reinstall or roll back an audio driver?
Driver recovery is the main branch when the device appears in Device Manager but playback or recording stopped after an update, a sleep cycle or a driver change.
Try Windows Update first
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available audio or system updates, and restart. Windows Update may deliver a compatible driver that Device Manager does not find locally.
Update through Device Manager
- In Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the affected device.
- Choose Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart when prompted and test both the default playback device and the application that originally failed.
Uninstall and let Windows reinstall it
If updating does not help, right-click the audio device, select Uninstall device, confirm, and restart Windows. On reboot, Windows should detect the hardware and reinstall an available driver. If the device remains absent, install the exact-model manufacturer package manually and restart again.
Use the generic High Definition Audio driver
Vendor software can be incompatible even when the underlying audio controller works. In the device’s Update driver wizard, choose Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers, then select High Definition Audio Device when it is offered. This generic option may remove vendor-specific effects, so use it as a compatibility test rather than assuming it is best for every system.

Roll back a recent update
If sound stopped immediately after a driver or Windows update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Restart and test. Rollback is limited to systems that still retain the previous driver; if the option is unavailable, use the manufacturer’s known-good package instead.
How do I restart the Windows audio services?
Audio endpoints can fail when their services are stopped or stuck. Restarting them is reversible and does not remove your driver.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Audio, right-click it and choose Restart.
- Do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- If the problem persists, locate Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and verify that it is running; Microsoft’s broader audio recovery sequence includes this service.
- Close Services and test playback and recording again.
Do not change service startup types casually. If a service will not start, note the accompanying message because that points to a Windows configuration problem rather than a speaker defect.
What if 0x80070057 appears during Windows Update or Windows Setup?
When the code appears while updating or installing Windows—not while opening a sound endpoint—treat it as a Windows-component or prerequisite problem. Microsoft associates the value in this context with corrupted files, permissions, incorrect configuration or an incorrect parameter.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters (or the equivalent Windows 10 page) and apply its recommended repairs.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator, type
sfc /scannow, and press Enter. Wait for verification to finish, then restart. - Review setup prerequisites, available storage, required restarts and the edition or architecture of the installation media. A parameter or configuration mismatch can produce this code even when audio itself is normal.
- After repairs and a restart, retry the update or setup operation. If the code returns, preserve the exact operation and wording shown in the dialog for further Windows support; do not infer that the sound card is the cause.
How can I fix a recording-only failure?
If playback works but an audio-recording diagnostic returns 0x80070057, check microphone privacy permissions before replacing the driver. A Microsoft community case reported this code after a Windows 10 update, and the accepted response said enabling microphone access resolved that user’s recording failure. It is a targeted check, not a universal explanation.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Allow apps to access your microphone. If the failing application is listed, allow it individually.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Privacy > Microphone and enable the corresponding device and app permissions.
- Return to Settings > System > Sound > Input, select the intended microphone, and speak while watching the input meter.
If the meter never moves, repeat the Device Manager driver checks and verify that a hardware mute switch is not engaged. If recording fails only in one application, inspect that application’s selected microphone and exclusive-mode settings.
Which repair should I choose for each symptom?
Use the location of the code, device visibility and timing of the failure to choose the least disruptive branch.
| Where the code appears | Device visible? | Most useful first action | Next branch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playback diagnostic or no sound | Yes | Select the correct output, set it as default, disable enhancements | Run audio diagnostics, then update or reinstall the driver |
| “No audio output device is installed” | No | Show hidden devices and scan for hardware changes in Device Manager | Install the exact-model manufacturer driver and restart |
| Device Manager driver warning | Yes, with warning | Update or uninstall the device and restart | Try the generic High Definition Audio driver or roll back a recent update |
| Recording diagnostic only | Usually yes | Enable microphone access and app permissions | Check input selection, then repair the driver |
| Windows Update | Audio may work | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter | Run sfc /scannow and review configuration |
| Windows Setup | Audio status is unrelated | Check prerequisites and installation parameters | Repair Windows files and retry after restarting |
When is the problem likely to be hardware?
The hexadecimal value alone is not evidence of a failed sound chip. Consider hardware only after the device remains missing across restarts, the exact manufacturer driver is installed, services run, and the same endpoint fails in another operating system or on another computer. Before that point, test a known-good headset or speakers and, if possible, the computer’s built-in speakers separately. A failed external headset does not explain a missing internal audio controller, and a missing controller does not prove that the speakers themselves are damaged.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a desktop add-in card or USB audio device, reconnect it directly to the computer, avoid an unpowered hub during testing, and check whether Device Manager reacts to removal and insertion. If the manufacturer’s diagnostics identify a model-specific hardware fault, use that manufacturer’s support or warranty process. Do not buy a replacement adapter merely because Windows displayed 0x80070057.
What should I record if none of these steps works?
Write down the exact hexadecimal string, the full message, Windows version, whether playback, recording or both fail, the device name shown in Device Manager, and the step after which the failure began. Note whether the device is visible, whether rollback is available, and whether the code appears only in one application or also in Windows’ own test sound. This information separates a routing problem from a driver problem and keeps a Windows Update or Setup error from being misdiagnosed as audio hardware.

As an optional shortcut for the driver branch, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and includes a 2-day free trial with no credit card before a subscription; results vary, and it does not repair every audio failure.
What should I try if sound works only after every restart?
That pattern often indicates a service or driver initialization problem. Compare the result of restarting Windows Audio with the result of rebooting the entire computer; if only the service restart restores sound, document it and focus on service dependencies, startup behavior and the installed driver rather than repeatedly changing speaker hardware.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can a Bluetooth headset trigger this code?
Yes. Bluetooth creates separate playback and communications endpoints, so Windows may keep the headset connected while selecting a different default device. Remove the headset from the sound output list temporarily, reconnect it, and explicitly set its playback endpoint as default before testing.
Why does one game have no sound while browser audio works?
Applications can store an output choice independently of the Windows default. Check the game’s audio output setting and Windows 11’s Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer for a per-app output assignment, then restart the game after changing it.
Should I disable all audio enhancements permanently?
No. Disable them as a diagnostic and restore them one at a time if the device becomes stable. Enhancements supplied by a vendor may provide useful effects, but an incompatible effect can be the component that rejects a parameter or prevents an endpoint from opening.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can error 0x80070057 damage my speakers?
No. The code describes an invalid parameter or argument, not physical damage. Test with another known-good output and inspect Device Manager before considering hardware replacement.
Recommended Free Tools
Is 0x80070057 the same as a missing audio driver?
No. A missing driver is one possible context in which Windows cannot complete an audio operation, but the same code can result from output selection, enhancements, privacy permissions, services, Windows Update or Setup configuration.
Will reinstalling Windows fix this audio error?
Reinstallation is not a first-line audio repair. Use the output, permissions, Device Manager, service and driver steps first; reserve Windows repair or installation troubleshooting for cases where the code appears during Update or Setup or system files are damaged.
What information should I give support about this error?
Provide the exact code copied from the dialog, its full wording, where it appeared, your Windows version, the affected device model, whether playback or recording fails, and whether the device is visible in Device Manager.
