If Windows 8 reports that an update failed with 0x80070057, first verify the characters in Windows Update history, then work through a backup, restart, Windows Update troubleshooter, System File Checker, service check, and update-cache reset. The title’s 0X800070057 has an extra zero; Microsoft documents 0x80070057 as “The parameter is incorrect.” It commonly accompanies corrupted files, permission problems, or an incorrect system configuration, but the code alone does not identify one universal cause. The procedure below is for Windows 8 and also notes where Windows 8.1 differs. None of these steps is a guaranteed cure, and Windows 8 is no longer supported, so a persistent failure may ultimately call for migration to a supported release.
Is 0X800070057 a real Windows 8 error code?
Microsoft’s documented code is 0x80070057, not 0X800070057. The extra zero in the title is probably a transcription error, but do not rely on the title or on memory: open Windows Update history and copy the exact hexadecimal value attached to the failed update. A different digit can point to a different diagnosis.

Microsoft describes 0x80070057 as “The parameter is incorrect.” In Windows Update it is associated with corrupted files, permission issues, and incorrect system configurations. It can also appear outside Windows Update, including a Windows 8/8.1 file-access situation involving a user’s effective permissions. The right repair therefore depends on where the message appears.
Where does the error appear, and which repair path fits?
Identify the context before changing system files. Use this decision table to avoid applying an update-cache fix to a file-permissions problem, or treating a permissions message as proof that Windows Update is broken.

| Where you see the message | What it may indicate | First manual actions | When to change course |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update history after an update fails | Corrupted update files, permissions, or an incorrect configuration | Back up files, restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, run sfc /scannow, then check the Windows Update service and cache |
If the same code remains after the cache reset and a clean boot, assess whether the unsupported operating system should be replaced |
| Windows setup or another installation | Background software or configuration interfering with installation | Confirm the exact code, restart, and use a clean boot so nonessential background programs are not loaded | If setup still fails, preserve the error details rather than repeatedly retrying an unknown code |
| Effective access display for a file or folder | A Windows 8/8.1 permissions-display issue, not necessarily an update problem | Record the exact Windows version and the file or folder involved; do not begin by deleting SoftwareDistribution |

What should I do before trying repairs?
Protect your personal data first. Microsoft recommends backing up personal files before attempting repair steps, and a USB flash drive is a suitable destination when you do not have another backup location.
- Copy documents, photos, saved games, browser exports, and any other irreplaceable files to a USB drive or another separate storage location.
- Keep the backup disconnected after copying until you need it; this reduces the chance of accidentally deleting it during troubleshooting.
- Write down the exact error code, the update name or number shown in history, and whether the message appeared during Windows Update, setup, or file-access checking.
- If the computer is encrypted or shared, make sure you can sign in with an administrator account before running elevated repair commands.
Do not skip the backup because the first steps seem harmless. Service changes and system-file repairs are designed to be reversible, but a current copy of your data is the safest recovery option.

How do I verify the exact code in Windows 8?
- Open Control Panel.
- Choose System and Security, then Windows Update.
- Select View update history and locate the failed entry.
- Open the entry’s details and copy the code exactly, including every zero and the letter case. Windows 8 editions can use slightly different labels, so look for the update-history view if the wording is not identical.
If the history shows 0x80070057, continue with the Windows Update path below. If it shows another value, search using that exact value instead of assuming the steps for 0x80070057 apply.
Can a restart fix the failed update?
Restarting is Microsoft’s first low-risk action for a failed update. It clears a pending restart state and closes processes that may still be holding update files.
- Save your work and close open programs.
- Use the Windows 8 power menu to choose Restart, not Shut down.
- After signing in, wait for the desktop to finish loading and retry the update once.
If the same code returns, continue in order rather than repeatedly clicking Retry. Repeated attempts do not identify whether the failure is caused by files, permissions, a service, or configuration.

How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter on Windows 8?
Windows 8 includes a Windows Update troubleshooter through Control Panel or PC settings, depending on the edition and interface. Microsoft recommends it for update failures because it checks common update components before you make manual changes.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Open the section for fixing problems with Windows Update. On some Windows 8 installations, the equivalent entry is exposed through PC settings; the exact label can differ by edition.
- Run the troubleshooter with administrator permission if Windows requests it.
- Allow it to complete, note any result it reports, and restart the computer if it asks you to.
- Return to Windows Update and try the failed update again.
The troubleshooter is a diagnostic and repair step, not proof that the underlying issue is resolved. If the code returns, move to System File Checker.
How do I repair Windows system files with SFC?
System File Checker can check protected Windows files for corruption. Microsoft’s repair sequence is to run sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt, restart, and retry the update.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Choose Command Prompt (Admin) or the equivalent elevated Command Prompt entry available on your edition.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Type
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Leave the window open while the scan runs. Do not power off the computer during the check.
- When the command finishes, restart Windows.
- Try the failed update again and record whether the same code appears.
Run the command exactly as shown, with a space between sfc and /scannow. If the elevated Command Prompt option is missing, sign in with an administrator account; do not substitute a normal, non-elevated prompt.
How do I check that the Windows Update service is running?
A stopped or misconfigured Windows Update service can prevent an update from downloading or installing. Check its state after SFC and before clearing the cache.

- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services list, find Windows Update.
- Read the Status column. If it is not running, right-click the service and choose Start.
- If it is already running, leave it running and close the Services window.
- Restart Windows and retry the update.
Do not disable the service as a permanent workaround. The objective is to confirm that Windows Update can run while you test the update again.
How do I clear the SoftwareDistribution update cache?
If the code persists and the service check did not help, reset the local update cache. Microsoft’s sequence is to stop Windows Update, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service again, restart the computer, and retry.
- Open
services.mscas described above. - Right-click Windows Update and choose Stop. Wait until the service shows that it has stopped.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents inside that folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If Windows asks for administrator permission, approve it. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Windows Update and try the failed update again.
If a file says it is in use, check that the Windows Update service really is stopped, close File Explorer windows opened inside the cache, and try again after a restart. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows, and do not continue if you are unsure which directory is open.
When should I use a clean boot?
Use a clean boot when an installation or update continues to fail after the basic repair path and you suspect a background program is interfering. Microsoft recommends this approach for persistent installation interference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Press Windows key + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - Use the System Configuration utility to configure a clean-boot state that prevents nonessential background programs and services from loading.
- Restart the computer and attempt the update or installation while in that state.
- After testing, return to System Configuration and restore the normal startup configuration, then restart again.
A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a recommended everyday configuration. If the update works only in that state, re-enable background items in a controlled way to identify the interfering program rather than leaving everything disabled.

What if 0x80070057 appears while checking file or folder access?
The code is not limited to Windows Update. Microsoft documents a Windows 8/8.1 issue in which 0x80070057 can appear while displaying a user’s effective access to a file or folder.
- Confirm that the message appears in the effective-access or permissions workflow, not in update history.
- Record whether the computer is running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1; the distinction matters for the documented fix.
- Do not clear
SoftwareDistributionunless Windows Update is also failing, because that cache has no direct connection to a permissions-display problem. - The Microsoft hotfix described for this specific issue applies to Windows 8.1 and does not apply to Windows 8 itself.
If the problem is on Windows 8 rather than 8.1, the hotfix’s stated applicability does not make it a valid solution. Keep the exact Windows edition and the file-access context with any support request.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Windows 8 still supported after these repairs?
No. Microsoft lists Windows 8’s end of support as January 12, 2016. Windows 8.1 reached end of support on January 10, 2023; after that date Microsoft says technical assistance, software updates, and security updates are no longer provided.
Recommended Free Tools
That support status changes the decision after troubleshooting. A one-time cache or file repair may let an update complete, but it cannot restore security servicing for an unsupported installation. If the same failure keeps returning, check whether the hardware can run a supported Windows release and plan a backup-led migration instead of spending indefinitely on retries.
Microsoft’s support guidance says that when a device does not meet the technical requirements for a more current release, the recommended path is to replace it with a device that supports Windows 11. Treat that as a hardware and lifecycle decision: preserve your files, verify the requirements for the release you intend to use, and do not erase the old installation until the backup and migration plan is complete.

As an optional shortcut for non-driver Windows errors, Outbyte PC Repair can check common system issues, clean temporary and cache files, and provide an app-crash log; it runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7. Its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a subscription, it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
What should I record if the error remains?
Good records make the next decision easier and prevent repeating the same step without new information.
- The exact code copied from Windows Update history, including capitalization and every digit.
- The update name or number and the date and time of the failed attempt.
- Whether restart, the Windows Update troubleshooter, SFC, the service check, and the cache reset changed the behavior.
- Whether the failure occurred only during a normal boot or also during a clean boot.
- Whether the computer is Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, since support dates and the file-access hotfix scope differ.
With those details, you can distinguish a transient update-cache problem from a recurring configuration or supportability problem. If the installation remains unsupported and cannot meet current requirements, migration is the durable remedy rather than another unverified reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the extra zero in 0X800070057 damage Windows?
No. The extra zero is a way the code may have been copied or typed; it does not itself alter Windows. The important action is to read the value attached to the failed event in Update history and troubleshoot that exact value.
Should I delete the entire SoftwareDistribution folder?
No. Stop the Windows Update service and clear the folder’s contents, leaving the folder in place. Deleting unrelated Windows directories can create a separate problem and does not follow Microsoft’s cache-reset sequence.
Does the documented effective-access hotfix work on Windows 8?
The documented hotfix for the effective-access display issue applies to Windows 8.1, not Windows 8. Check the edition before treating that fix as applicable.
Is it worth repeatedly retrying updates on an unsupported PC?
Only long enough to complete the ordered checks and capture the exact failure details. Because Windows 8 and 8.1 no longer receive normal support, a recurring failure should prompt a supported-release or hardware migration plan.
