If Microsoft Store reports 0x80070057, work through Windows’ built-in cache, update, app-repair, registration and network checks in that order. The spelling in your title, 0X080070057, contains an extra zero and may refer to a different Windows operation, so first copy the exact code and full message from the original dialog. Do not use an activation or Windows Update remedy until you have confirmed that the failure is actually in Microsoft Store.

What does the Microsoft Store code 0x80070057 mean?

0x80070057 is a parameter-related Windows error value that can appear in several operations. In a Store context it commonly accompanies a launch failure, an app installation or update that will not complete, or a Store session that cannot reach the required package service. The code alone does not identify the broken component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The title form 0X080070057 has one more zero than the Store code normally reported as 0x80070057. A similarly spelled value has appeared in an activation report, so treat the extra-zero version as a transcription possibility rather than proof that the Store is at fault.

Before changing anything, record:

  • The exact hexadecimal code, including every character.
  • The complete message text and any error-details link.
  • Whether Store itself will not open, one app fails, every app fails, or only one Windows account is affected.
  • The app name, Windows edition and build, account in use, and the action that failed.
  • The date and time of the failure.

This record prevents you from applying an activation fix to a Store problem, or from treating a single-app package problem as a system-wide outage.

What should I try first when Store fails?

Start with reversible changes that do not remove app data. Run the cache reset, install pending Windows and Store updates, and verify time and region settings before using PowerShell or deleting Store data.

  1. Run wsreset.exe.
  2. Restart Windows and install all pending Windows updates.
  3. Open Store’s Library and select Get updates (Windows 11) or the equivalent downloads-and-updates view in Windows 10.
  4. Check the system clock, time zone and region/location.
  5. Use Store’s Repair option, then Reset only if Repair did not help.
  6. For a package-registration failure, inspect and re-register Microsoft Store for the affected user.
  7. If downloads alone fail, investigate firewall, proxy and organization policy, then try winget when the app is available there.

How do I reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe?

wsreset.exe clears the Store cache without asking you to remove installed apps. It is the safest first action when Store is slow, refuses to open, or repeatedly shows an installation error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type wsreset.exe and select OK.
  3. Leave the window running. Microsoft describes a blank Command Prompt window that remains open for roughly ten seconds and then closes; Microsoft Store should open automatically.
  4. After Store opens, retry the original install or update.

Do not close the blank window manually. If it closes and Store does not appear, restart Windows and run the same command once more. A cache reset will not repair a missing package registration, a blocked endpoint or a policy restriction, so move to the next section if the symptom is unchanged.

How do Windows updates, Store updates and regional settings affect the error?

Store depends on current Windows components and on valid regional and time data for authentication and package services. A pending servicing update or an incorrect clock can make a healthy package look unavailable.

Install Windows updates

Open Settings, go to Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install everything offered. Restart when requested, then check again until no additional restart is pending. On a managed PC, an administrator may control when updates can be installed.

Update Store apps

Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates on Windows 11. Windows 10 presents the same function in its downloads-and-updates view. Let the Store update itself and any queued apps before trying the failed package again.

Verify time, time zone and region

In Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time and confirm the time zone. In Settings > Time & language > Language & region, verify the country or region matches your actual location. Correct a wrong value, restart Store, and retry. Avoid changing region merely to obtain an app that is not offered in your market; regional availability is separate from this error.

How do I repair or reset Microsoft Store safely?

Windows provides two levels of app recovery. Repair attempts to refresh the Store while retaining its data. Reset is more destructive: it permanently removes the app’s data, preferences and sign-in details before reinstalling its package.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
  2. Find Microsoft Store, open its menu, and select Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair, wait for the operation to finish, then launch Store and test it.
  4. If the error remains, return to the same page and select Reset. Confirm the warning.
  5. Sign in again if prompted. For a particular Store app, open Library and reinstall it after the reset.

Use Reset only after the cache and Repair steps. It can remove local preferences and sign-in state, so make sure you know the account credentials and understand that locally stored app data may not return. Resetting Store does not by itself prove that the app’s publisher package or your network is healthy.

How can I check whether the Store package is registered?

A Store package can exist on the computer but be missing or damaged for one user. Registration problems often produce a Store that opens for one account but fails for another, or a package that appears installed yet cannot launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the affected user’s package

Open a normal, non-elevated PowerShell window and run:

Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore*

A valid result should show the package identity, an install location and Status : Ok. If the command returns nothing, or the status is not healthy, continue with the all-user inspection and registration path rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.

Inspect all users, then register for the affected account

Use an elevated PowerShell prompt only to inspect whether the package is present for other users. When you perform registration for the person who cannot use Store, switch back to a normal, non-elevated prompt and run:

Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe

The command targets the Store family name shown above. Microsoft warns that running the registration command elevated registers the app in the administrator context instead of fixing the affected user’s profile. Close and reopen Store after the command completes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not remove random AppX folders or change permissions just because registration failed. Missing registration, corrupted package files, permissions and AppLocker policy can all produce similar symptoms; the command output and event logs are more useful than deleting files blindly.

What if Store opens but downloads or updates fail?

When Store launches normally but downloads stop, the likely scope shifts from the local cache to connectivity or policy. A firewall, proxy, content filter or organization rule can block Store or Windows Update endpoints even when ordinary websites work.

Check local and organization network controls

  • Temporarily test on a trusted network, such as a home connection, if policy permits.
  • Review Windows proxy settings under Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and remove a stale manual proxy only if it is not required by your organization.
  • Check firewall or security software logs for blocked Store or Windows Update traffic. Do not disable protection permanently to test one download.
  • On a work or school computer, ask the administrator to verify Store policy, proxy rules and required endpoints before changing security settings.

Use winget as an alternative path

If the application is published through the Windows package catalog, Windows Package Manager may install it without using the Store interface. In a terminal, search by name:

winget search <AppName>

Review the returned package identity carefully, then install the intended result:

winget install <AppName>

This is an alternative installation route, not a repair for Store registration or a bypass for an organization’s policy. It still needs network access and may not list every Store-only app.

How do I collect evidence before escalating?

If the built-in fixes do not change the result, stop repeating them and capture evidence while the failure is reproducible. Support staff can distinguish a cache fault from package, policy and endpoint failures only when the context is complete.

  1. Save the full dialog, exact code, app name and timestamp.
  2. Record Windows edition and build, the affected account, and whether another account on the same PC behaves differently.
  3. Save the output from Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore*, including package identity, install location and status.
  4. Open Event Viewer and review Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > AppXDeployment-Server around the failure.
  5. Also check AppModel-Runtime, Application and System logs for entries at the same time.
  6. Note whether wsreset.exe, Repair, Reset, registration or winget changed the symptom.

Preserve the original event details before clearing logs or creating a new test. Package identity and event records can reveal a denied policy, a missing registration, a permissions problem or a download endpoint that the generic Store message hides.

Which recovery route has the lowest risk?

The following comparison helps you choose the next action without jumping straight to the most destructive option.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Route Primary scope Data impact Privilege Connectivity dependency Evidence value
wsreset.exe Store-wide cache Preserves app data Ordinary user Mostly local; retry still needs network Low; confirms whether cache was involved
Store Repair Store app package and settings Retains app data Ordinary user with Settings access Usually local until you retry a download Moderate; separates refresh problems from downloads
Store Reset Store app state Removes preferences, sign-in details and app data Ordinary user with Settings access Reinstallation and later downloads need network Moderate; useful after Repair fails
PowerShell registration One user’s Store registration Does not intentionally erase app data Normal prompt for registration; elevated prompt only for all-user inspection Not required to register an existing package High when paired with package status and logs
Firewall, proxy and policy checks Store endpoints and organization controls Preserves local app state May require an administrator Directly dependent on endpoint access High for download-only failures
winget Alternative app installation Does not repair Store itself Depends on the app and Windows permissions Required for catalog access and download Shows whether the package can be obtained outside Store

If Store will not open at all, work from cache through Repair and registration. If only downloads fail, prioritize network and policy checks. If only one account is affected, package registration and that user’s profile are more informative than system-wide resets.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, no tool repairs every crash, and its free trial is limited by category before a subscription is required.

Frequently asked questions

Does 0x80070057 always mean Microsoft Store is broken?

No. The same hexadecimal value can be emitted by different Windows operations, and the extra-zero spelling in some dialogs may identify another context. The original message, failed action and account are needed to determine which subsystem generated it.

Will resetting Store delete my installed games?

Reset removes Store’s own app data, preferences and sign-in details; it is not a blanket uninstall command for every game on the PC. Individual apps can still have local save files or settings, so check the publisher’s save-location guidance before resetting an app that stores progress locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Store work in one Windows account but not another?

AppX registration is maintained in the user context, so one profile can have a missing or damaged registration while another remains healthy. Comparing package status and event logs for the two accounts can confirm a profile-specific problem without changing system-wide policy.

Can I install every Store app with winget?

No. winget only returns packages available through its configured catalogs, and some Store applications are not listed there or require Store-specific licensing. Treat a missing search result as a catalog limitation, not proof that the app has been removed from Windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I change my Windows region to fix this error?

Only correct a region that is genuinely wrong. Changing regions to force availability can affect app listings, billing and media settings and does not repair package registration or a blocked network endpoint.

What does an empty Get-AppxPackage result tell me?

It means the Store package is not registered for the account in that PowerShell context, or the package is absent from the system. Check another account or an all-user inspection before attempting registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the Store reset ask me to sign in again?

Reset deliberately removes the Store app’s local preferences and sign-in state. Have the Microsoft account credentials available and expect to re-establish any Store-specific settings afterward.

What should I give Microsoft support if none of these steps work?

Provide the exact dialog, Windows build, affected account, package command output, timestamps and relevant AppXDeployment-Server or AppModel-Runtime events. Mention which steps changed the symptom, even if the change was only that Store began opening but downloads still failed.
