The Steam error “Failed to add new Steam library folder” means Steam could not create or register the folder you selected. The usual causes are a location that is not writable, security software blocking Steam, a damaged storage device, a broken Steam library state, or—on Linux—a filesystem mounted without execute permission. Start with Steam > Settings > Storage, select the correct library root, run Repair Folder, and then retry after restarting Steam. If that fails, use the operating-system and storage checks below before considering a reinstall or hardware replacement.
What does “Failed to add new Steam library folder” mean?
Steam is refusing either to create the selected library directory or to register it as a usable library. A Steam library is more than a place for game files: the client must be able to read, write, update and execute files there. A folder can look normal in your file manager and still fail one of those checks.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Steam Support states: “These folders need to be writable by all users in order to update properly.” That requirement is why a permission problem can prevent both a brand-new library and an existing installation from being added. Steam also identifies antivirus interference, storage corruption, and problems with the client or library state as relevant causes.
The wording “Steam library folder must be writable” usually points to permissions or security software. “Steam library folder can’t be the drive root” is a community-reported variation; selecting a dedicated folder on the drive is safer than selecting the root itself. On Linux, “New Steam library folder must be on a filesystem mounted with execute permissions” identifies a mount-option problem rather than an ordinary folder permission.

How do I add a Steam library folder correctly?
Use Steam’s current Storage manager instead of manually editing library files. The same workflow handles a new empty location and reconnects an existing library when you select its library root.
- Open the manager: launch Steam and choose Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Start the add flow: click the + button or choose Add Drive, depending on the layout shown by your client.
- Select a library root: choose the folder that should contain the Steam library. For an existing installation, select the top-level library folder, not a game’s
steamapps/commonsubfolder and not an individual game directory. - Use a dedicated folder: if you are creating a library, make a clearly named folder on the chosen drive rather than selecting the drive’s root. The path should be on a mounted, accessible volume with enough free space.
- Confirm and test: add the location, then try installing or moving a small game. A successful test confirms that Steam can write to the path, not merely display it.
If the folder chooser is empty, disappears, or returns to the previous screen, do not repeatedly create random folders. Continue with the permission, mount and timestamp checks for your operating system.

How do I repair a Steam library folder that was previously working?
Steam’s Storage manager includes a repair action that refreshes the folder’s permissions and library registration without requiring you to reinstall every game.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the affected drive or library in the storage list.
- Open its options menu and choose Repair Folder or Repair Library Folder; the exact label varies by client version.
- Wait for the operation to finish, then close Steam completely. Exit from the Steam menu and verify that no Steam process remains before reopening it.
- Try adding the path again or launch a game that uses the repaired library.
Repair is the lower-risk first move because it targets registration and permissions rather than moving files. If the repair action itself fails, note whether Steam reports access denied, a missing path, or a filesystem error; that wording determines the next branch.

How can I fix permissions and security-software blocks on Windows or macOS?
On desktop operating systems, the library must be writable by the account running Steam. A security product can also block Steam’s updater even when the folder appears writable.
Check the folder and drive
- Make sure the drive is mounted and visible in the operating system before starting Steam.
- Open the folder’s security or sharing permissions and confirm that your Steam account can create, change and delete a test file there. Remove the test file afterward.
- Avoid a location controlled by another user, a read-only volume, or a system-protected directory. A dedicated folder at the top level of an internal data drive is easier to manage.
- If the path is on a network or removable volume, test an internal drive first. This separates a Steam configuration problem from a device that is disconnecting.
Check antivirus and live monitoring
Steam advises adding an exception for the Steam application and its library folders when antivirus live monitoring blocks writes. Use the security product’s exclusion settings, then restart Steam before testing again. Do not disable protection permanently; add the narrowest exception that permits Steam to update, and remove it if it does not change the result.
Check for a read-only or damaged volume
If the operating system reports that the disk is read-only, ejects it, or shows file-system errors, fix the volume outside Steam first. Copy important saves and other irreplaceable data before running repair utilities. Steam’s guidance is to test installation on an alternate hard drive when corruption is suspected; that is a diagnostic comparison, not an instruction to buy a replacement immediately.
Why does Linux require execute permissions for a Steam library?
Linux can mount a filesystem with the noexec option. Steam then may display “New Steam library folder must be on a filesystem mounted with execute permissions,” because programs and scripts in that location cannot run. The fix is to use a mount with exec enabled, subject to your distribution’s security policy.

Check the mount before changing anything
- Identify the exact mount point containing the proposed library; a folder inside your home directory and a separately mounted data partition can have different options.
- Inspect the mount options with your distribution’s disk or mount tools. Look specifically for
noexec. - If
noexecis present, change the mount configuration to allow execution or remount it withexecaccording to your distribution’s documented method. You may need administrator privileges. - Restart Steam after the mount change and add the library again through Settings > Storage.
ArchWiki also documents a separate Linux symptom: an empty or missing folder chooser can result from an incorrect directory timestamp. Check the directory’s timestamp and correct it using your normal file-management or shell tools, then restart Steam. Do not assume that an empty chooser means the drive is gone.
How do I reconnect an existing Steam library without deleting games?
Use the library’s root folder in Storage manager. Steam should discover the existing steamapps structure and restore the installation entries when it can read the path.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Go to Steam > Settings > Storage and start Add Drive or the + flow.
- Browse to the folder that contains the library’s
steamappsdirectory. Do not choosesteamapps/commonitself. - Run Repair Folder if Steam lists the location but shows missing or uninstalled games.
- Open a game’s Properties > Installed Files page and use verification only if files are reported missing or damaged.
Do not begin a new installation into the old game directory while Steam is still trying to register the library. That can create duplicate folders and make it harder to distinguish a path problem from a file problem.
Are external drives a likely cause?
They can be. Steam’s official guidance does not recommend external hard drives for Steam libraries because they may disconnect at inconvenient times, which can corrupt library or installation information. A loose cable, sleep-related disconnect, insufficient power or a changed mount letter can all make a previously valid path appear unavailable.

For diagnosis, connect the external drive directly, wait for the operating system to mount it, and confirm that you can create and delete a test file before opening Steam. Then try the same library-add process on an internal drive. If the internal test works while the external location does not, investigate the enclosure, cable, power and filesystem rather than repeatedly repairing Steam.
What should I do if Steam still cannot add the folder?
Use these escalation steps in order. Each targets a different failure type and avoids unnecessary data movement.

Steam will restart and may ask you to sign in again.
- Verify one affected game: select the game in your Library, open Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files. This is useful when the folder adds successfully but one title will not update or launch.
- Change download region temporarily: in Settings > Downloads > Download Region, select another nearby region if symptoms point to a content-server or download failure. Restore your normal region after testing.
- Test another drive: install or add a small library on an alternate internal drive. If Steam works there, the original volume or its mount is the leading suspect.
- Reinstall Steam over the existing location: Steam says reinstalling to the same location can repair client and service files while preserving installed games when performed over the existing installation. Back up saves and record library paths first, and do not format the game drive.
If a second drive produces the same error, the problem is more likely to be Steam’s client state, account permissions or security software than a single disk. If only one drive fails, keep troubleshooting that volume before replacing the Steam installation.

What mistakes make the error harder to fix?
- Selecting the wrong level of the path: choosing a game’s
commondirectory instead of the library root prevents Steam from seeing the expected structure. - Changing several variables at once: moving files, reinstalling Steam and changing drives simultaneously removes the clues needed to identify the cause.
- Ignoring the operating system’s mount state: Linux
noexec, a read-only volume or an unmounted external disk cannot be repaired solely from Steam’s interface. - Disabling security protection broadly: use a targeted exception rather than leaving live monitoring off.
- Replacing hardware too early: an alternate-drive test and filesystem diagnostics should establish a storage problem before you spend money on a new drive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose the root of a drive as my Steam library?
Steam may reject a drive root, and users commonly report that wording in this error. Create a dedicated folder on the drive and add that folder through Storage instead; it keeps Steam’s library files separate from unrelated folders and avoids ambiguous path permissions.
Will repairing a library folder uninstall my games?
Repair Folder is intended to refresh registration and permissions, not remove installed titles. Close Steam normally first and keep a backup of important saves, especially for games that store saves outside Steam Cloud.
Why does the folder work in my file manager but not in Steam?
A file manager test proves only that your account can access the path. Steam also needs to create update files, run content processes and maintain its library metadata, so antivirus rules, mount options or a read-only volume can still block it.
What information should I record before contacting Steam Support?
Note your operating system and version, the full library path, whether the drive is internal or external, the exact error wording, and whether another drive works. Include what happened after Repair Folder and cache clearing; those details let support distinguish permissions, mount policy, storage faults and client corruption.
