Fix Fallout: New Vegas crashes by identifying which layer is failing. A crash before the main menu usually points to the installation, executable patch, driver, permissions, or INI files. A “missing master” is a plugin dependency failure. A crash after loading a save or entering a cell is more often a conflict, bad load order, missing asset, or unresolved reference. Use a clean, writable game installation; manage one controlled profile in Mod Organizer 2 (MO2); use LOOT as a diagnostic baseline; follow the guide-specific order when using Viva New Vegas; and use FNVEdit/xEdit to inspect dependencies and conflicts. Keep a known-good profile and test on a new save while you work.
Start with the symptom, not a random load-order change
The same desktop crash can have very different causes. First note when it occurs and whether the game reaches the menu.

Do not use a load-order tool to repair an absent executable patch, and do not reinstall a dependency to solve a graphics-driver failure. Work from the earliest failing stage.
Make the installation writable and predictable
Before changing plugins, remove the Windows file-system variables that can make mod tools appear to work while failing to write files.

Install outside protected folders
Viva New Vegas recommends avoiding C:Program Files, C:Program Files (x86), the Desktop, and Documents. Windows permissions and OneDrive management in those locations can block or redirect INI, log, archive, and plugin writes. A simple alternative is a folder such as C:Games. Put the game and the tools that must write to it in a location you control.
Show real file extensions
In File Explorer, open View → Show → File name extensions. Confirm that files really end in .exe, .dll, .esp, .esm, or .bsa. This prevents a downloaded file such as xNVSE.dll from being mistaken for an extensionless file or accidentally renamed with a second extension.
Disable Mandatory ASLR for FalloutNV.exe
Fallout: New Vegas is a 32-bit program. Viva New Vegas explains that Windows Base Address Randomization (Mandatory ASLR) can randomize a 32-bit program’s starting address in a way the game does not expect, producing modded-game crashes. In Windows, open Windows Security → App & browser control → Exploit protection → Program settings. Add FalloutNV.exe, choose the image-randomization override, turn off Force randomization for images (Mandatory ASLR) for that executable, apply the change, and restart the game.
Confirm platform and launch prerequisites
Do these checks with every MO2 plugin disabled or with a deliberately minimal baseline. They address a game that cannot start, not a bad record inside a loaded plugin.
- Update the graphics driver. Bethesda Support includes driver updates in its crash checklist. If you use an AMD RX card, Bethesda specifically documented a launch problem with Adrenalin Edition 24.4.1; that warning is tied to that driver release, so check current AMD and Bethesda guidance before choosing a rollback.
- Verify the game files. Use the verification command in your store client. Steam and GOG Galaxy can restore altered base files, but verification also removes some modding changes; the patcher steps later in this article must be repeated afterward.
- Use appropriate permissions. Run the game and mod manager with the permissions required by their installation path. If LOOT cannot write the plugin order, close it, relaunch with the necessary administrator rights, and ensure the game folder is not read-only.
- Exclude the game and tools from antivirus scanning where appropriate. Security software can quarantine a DLL or prevent a patcher from writing. Add exclusions only for files and folders you trust, and review the quarantine log for an xNVSE or patcher file that disappeared.
- Reset the Fallout: New Vegas INI files. Back up the existing INIs, then delete the FalloutNV INI files so the launcher can create fresh defaults. Reapply only the settings you need after the baseline launches.
- Try Windows compatibility troubleshooting if the unmodded game itself fails. Establish that the base game reaches the menu before diagnosing plugins.
Viva New Vegas also lists an absent or incorrectly installed 4GB/Epic patcher, missing xNVSE, and enabled Base Address Randomization as common reasons a modded game crashes or appears to do nothing at startup. Install the patcher that matches your game edition, place xNVSE where its instructions require, and launch the same executable that your profile is configured to use.

Use MO2 as the controlled experiment
Mod Organizer 2 keeps each profile’s enabled mods, plugins, INIs, and load-order files separate from the base installation. That separation lets you roll back without deleting files from every setup.
Create and preserve a baseline
- Open MO2 and select the profile you intend to troubleshoot.
- Export or copy the profile’s
modlist.txtandloadorder.txtbefore changing anything. Keep a dated copy outside the profile folder. - Disable newly added or suspect mods, leaving only the known baseline. Do not delete them yet; disabling preserves the evidence and makes rollback easy.
- Start a new test game. A save made with a removed plugin can retain scripts and references, so a successful old save is not proof that the current plugin set is safe.
- When the baseline works, duplicate the profile or save another backup. This is your recovery point.
Always launch through MO2’s configured New Vegas entry. Viva New Vegas explicitly reminds users to run the game using the New Vegas option in MO2; launching a desktop shortcut or a different executable can bypass the profile’s virtual files, INIs, and DLL configuration.

A master is a plugin that supplies records another plugin references. The warning is therefore a dependency error, not a cosmetic load-order complaint.
Read the exact filename
MO2 or the game will identify the missing file, for example an .esm or .esp. Copy the filename exactly, including punctuation and capitalization. Similar names are not interchangeable: installing a newer, renamed, or edition-specific file does not satisfy a dependency that expects a different filename.
Restore the dependency in the same profile
- Identify which mod supplied the dependent plugin and which mod or archive supplies the missing master.
- Install the required dependency for the same game edition and version.
- Enable the master in the same MO2 profile as the dependent plugin.
- Refresh MO2’s plugin list and confirm that the warning is gone before changing order.
If the dependent mod is obsolete, incompatible with your edition, or intentionally unused, disable or remove the dependent plugin instead. Do not keep an enabled plugin whose required master is absent.

Never erase another author’s master entry
xEdit documentation warns that deleting a master entry can drastically change the mod’s intended behavior. Editing the header to silence the warning may make the plugin load while leaving records that still point at missing forms. Restore the exact master or stop using the dependent plugin; do not “repair” the dependency by deleting the reference.

Load order controls which plugin wins when two plugins edit the same record, but it cannot manufacture a missing master or repair a broken executable.
Use LOOT as a diagnostic baseline
LOOT recognizes FalloutNV, scans installed plugins, reads its masterlist metadata, and can sort and apply an order. If it cannot write the order for Fallout: New Vegas, it may need administrator rights or a writable installation. Read every warning it produces; a sort is a starting point, not permission to ignore a guide’s rules.
After sorting, inspect the result for disabled masters, cyclic or missing dependencies, and messages about compatibility patches. A plugin that LOOT places correctly can still conflict with a mod whose instructions require a specific manual position.
Follow Viva New Vegas’s profile order when using that guide
- Open the MO2 profile folder used by the guide.
- Copy the guide’s
loadorder.txtinto that profile, replacing the file only after backing up your current one. - Press F5 in MO2 to refresh the profile.
- Enable all plugins required by the baseline.
- Launch with the New Vegas executable option in MO2.
Viva New Vegas notes that mods you add yourself are placed at the bottom and may need manual repositioning. Place each addition according to its instructions and the guide’s rules. If you cannot determine where an added plugin belongs, return to the guide’s known baseline instead of guessing; the guide does not support setups containing unreviewed additions.

Understand what “correct” means
There is no universal order that is correct for every mod list. Masters must load before plugins that depend on them; compatibility patches must load where their instructions specify; and later records generally win conflicts. The authoritative order is the one documented for your exact collection and game edition, with all required masters present.
Diagnose conflicts and unresolved references with FNVEdit
Once the plugin set loads, run FNVEdit (xEdit for New Vegas) against the same MO2 profile. Its reference-error check distinguishes a harmless definition mismatch from a record that points to something that does not exist.
Run the reference check
- Start FNVEdit from MO2 so it sees the profile’s virtual files and enabled plugins.
- Load the full plugin set, or the subset named in a warning.
- Wait for the background load to finish, then run the reference-error check from the xEdit menu.
- Record the plugin, form, and referenced record named in each error before making changes.
xEdit describes unresolved-reference errors as “very serious” because a mod is trying to reference something missing from the mod or one of its masters. Treat a repeated unresolved reference as a defect in the plugin or its dependency chain. The proper fix normally belongs to the mod author: install the exact missing requirement, use an updated compatible release, or report the reproducible error with the plugin list and form information. Do not randomly delete records to make the report disappear.
Inspect ordinary conflicts separately
In xEdit’s left pane, examine records highlighted as overridden by multiple plugins. Compare the winning (last-loaded) record with earlier versions and check whether a compatibility patch is expected. A conflict is not automatically a bug: intentional patches and overhauls often override the same records. Change order only when the mod’s instructions or a deliberate patch tells you which values should win.

A red diamond with an exclamation mark, an invisible object, or a crash when a particular model appears usually indicates a missing mesh or archive, not a master problem.

- Verify files in Steam or GOG Galaxy.
- Rerun the correct executable or 4GB/Epic patcher for your game version.
- Rerun the Vanilla BSAs Patcher.
- Launch the baseline through MO2 and test the same location on a new game.
Viva New Vegas warns that verifying files reverts BSA patching and the executable patch. Verification can therefore make the game cleaner while simultaneously removing the changes your mod setup needs; always run the required patchers again afterward.
Isolate a crash that survives the basic checks
Use a binary-style test rather than disabling dozens of files at once.
- Export fresh copies of MO2’s
modlist.txtandloadorder.txt. Preserve the last known-good profile unchanged. - Disable the newest or most suspect addition, then start a new test game.
- If the crash remains, disable the next small group. If it disappears, re-enable half of that group.
- Repeat the split until one mod or a small interaction is responsible.
- For the suspect group, inspect LOOT messages, each plugin’s masters, and xEdit conflicts and reference errors.
- Re-enable only after installing required dependencies, applying the documented patch, or moving the plugin to its guide-specified position.
Test the same action each time: loading the same save is less reliable than starting a new game and entering the same cell. Keep personal saves backed up and do not overwrite the known-good profile while experimenting.

Prevent the next failure
- Keep the game and tools in a writable location such as
C:Games, not a protected or OneDrive-managed folder. - Launch the game from the same MO2 profile every time.
- Save copies of
modlist.txt,loadorder.txt, and the profile whenever the setup works. - Add or update mods in small groups, and start a new test game after major plugin changes.
- Read each mod’s required masters and compatibility notes before enabling it.
- After file verification, reinstall every executable, BSA, or game-version patch your setup requires.
- Keep a separate backup of saves made before adding or removing plugins.
With those controls in place, a crash becomes a reproducible change to isolate rather than a reason to rebuild the entire game.
