FileSyncClient.dll is normally a Microsoft OneDrive client component. Fixing an error that names it starts with verifying the file’s location and Microsoft signature, not downloading a replacement DLL. If the copy is legitimate and OneDrive is failing, reset the OneDrive sync app; if reset does not help, uninstall and reinstall the official desktop sync app. If the file is in an unexpected folder, came from an untrusted download, or is flagged by security software, treat the situation as a security investigation and scan Windows before attempting repairs.
What is FileSyncClient.dll?
FileSyncClient.dll is associated with the Microsoft OneDrive desktop synchronization client. ThreatInfo lists it as a Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft Corporation file, with a latest analysis date of 2025-05-25. FreeFixer describes it as “Microsoft OneDrive Client” and reports a Microsoft Corporation digital signature. Those records are identification clues, not proof that every file with this name is genuine.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A typical legitimate copy is stored beneath a user-specific OneDrive directory such as C:Users%USERNAME%AppDataLocalMicrosoftOneDrive, with additional version or build folders below it. The exact subfolder can vary as OneDrive updates. A copy in a temporary-download folder, a game directory, a system directory unrelated to OneDrive, or another unexpected location deserves closer examination.
Windows loads DLLs on behalf of applications. If a malicious file is placed earlier in an application’s search locations, the application can load that copy instead of the intended library. That is why the path and digital signature matter more than the filename alone.

Is FileSyncClient.dll a virus?
The name by itself does not establish that the file is malware. A copy in a normal OneDrive directory with a valid Microsoft Corporation signature is consistent with the genuine client; an unsigned copy, a copy in an unusual directory, or one obtained from an untrusted download is not enough to trust.
Do not dismiss a security alert merely because the filename sounds familiar. Record the exact path shown by Windows Security or another security product, then scan the system. If the alert concerns a copy outside OneDrive, avoid launching the associated program or copying the DLL elsewhere while you investigate.
What should I check before trying a repair?
Identify the failure and the file before changing OneDrive. The same filename can appear in a harmless application error or in a potentially unsafe location, and those cases require different first actions.
Capture the exact symptom
- Write down whether Windows reports that FileSyncClient.dll is missing or “not found.”
- Note whether OneDrive closes, crashes during startup, repeatedly asks you to sign in, or stops synchronizing.
- Record whether Windows Security or another security tool specifically flagged the file.
- Take a screenshot or copy the complete error text, including the program name and file path if shown.
A missing-file message while OneDrive starts usually points to a damaged or incomplete OneDrive installation. A security alert or an unusual path changes the priority to verification and scanning.
Inspect the path and signature
- Open File Explorer and browse to the location named in the error or alert.
- Right-click
FileSyncClient.dll, choose Properties, and check the General tab for the full location. - Open the Digital Signatures tab. A signature from Microsoft Corporation supports (but does not by itself guarantee) that the file is authentic.
- Compare the location with the normal OneDrive area under your user profile. Treat a copy in an unrelated application folder, a random download directory, or a system location you did not expect as suspicious.
If the file has no Digital Signatures tab, the signature is invalid, or the signer is not Microsoft Corporation, do not replace it manually. Continue with the security scan procedure below instead of downloading another copy.

Which repair should I choose?
Reset, reinstall, and security investigation are not interchangeable DLL fixes. Use the least disruptive option that matches the evidence.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | Use it when | What it changes | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| OneDrive reset | The file appears legitimate and OneDrive is crashing, not syncing, or showing a normal application error. | Disconnects sync connections and rebuilds OneDrive’s local state. | Your files and data are not deleted; you will need to let OneDrive reconnect and rescan. |
| Uninstall and reinstall | Reset fails, the installation is incomplete, or the DLL is genuinely missing from a legitimate OneDrive installation. | Removes the desktop sync app and installs a fresh copy. | Local syncing stops while the app is removed; sign in and configure folders again after installation. Files remain available in OneDrive online. |
| Security investigation | The path is unusual, the file is unsigned, it came from an untrusted download, or security software flagged it. | Checks for unwanted software rather than repairing OneDrive state. | Scanning may quarantine or remove a suspicious file. Do not restore it merely to make an error disappear. |
How do I reset OneDrive to repair FileSyncClient.dll errors?
Resetting is the supported first repair for a legitimate OneDrive installation. It rebuilds OneDrive’s local configuration and disconnects sync connections, but Microsoft states that resetting OneDrive does not delete your files or data.
- Save open documents that are currently syncing and close OneDrive-related windows.
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /resetand press Enter. - Wait a few minutes. The OneDrive cloud icon may disappear while the local state is rebuilt.
- If Windows reports that it cannot find the file, open Run again and try
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset. - If that path also fails, try
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset. - When the reset command completes, open OneDrive from the Start menu.
- Sign in if prompted and allow the client to rebuild its sync list. Check that the affected folders begin synchronizing normally.
A reset can look like a pause rather than a visible repair because OneDrive may take time to rescan files. Do not interrupt it by deleting the OneDrive folder or by copying a replacement DLL into it. If the same FileSyncClient.dll message returns after OneDrive has restarted, proceed to reinstalling the app.
How do I reinstall OneDrive when reset does not work?
Reinstalling replaces the desktop sync installation and is the next step when reset cannot start, the DLL is missing, or OneDrive remains broken. Microsoft distinguishes this desktop sync app from the Microsoft Store viewer app; install the official sync app, not only the viewer.
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Choose Apps, then Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10).
- Find Microsoft OneDrive, open its menu, and choose Uninstall. Confirm the removal.
- Understand the immediate effect: local syncing stops while the program is uninstalled. Uninstalling does not delete the files stored in your OneDrive account online.
- Download the OneDrive sync app from Microsoft’s official site. Avoid third-party DLL repositories and download mirrors.
- Run the installer, complete setup, and sign in with the account that owns the OneDrive files.
- Review the OneDrive folder location and sync selections during setup. Allow the first synchronization to finish before judging whether the error is gone.
- Open OneDrive and test the action that previously failed, such as starting the client, opening a synced file, or uploading a small test document.
If the installer itself fails, keep the error text and the installer’s location. A failed installation may indicate a broader Windows or security-policy issue, but it is still safer to resolve that issue than to copy an isolated DLL into the application directory.

What should I do if the file is in a suspicious location?
Use the security path first when FileSyncClient.dll came from an unexpected download, sits outside a normal OneDrive directory, lacks a valid Microsoft Corporation signature, or was flagged by security software. Do not launch the file, email it to someone, or move it into a Windows or application folder.
- Disconnect from untrusted networks if you believe unwanted software may be active, while keeping access to the Windows Security interface.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, and run a Full scan.
- Let the scan complete and follow Windows Security’s quarantine or removal recommendation for a detected threat.
- If unwanted software persists or Windows Security recommends a deeper check, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan. The computer restarts so scanning can occur outside the normal Windows session; save work first.
- After the scan, obtain OneDrive only from Microsoft’s official download channel and reinstall it if the legitimate client is damaged.
Do not disable protection simply to make the warning disappear. If a security product identifies a legitimate Microsoft-signed file as suspicious, preserve the detection name and path and consult that product’s support guidance before restoring or excluding the file.
Can I download FileSyncClient.dll from a DLL website?
No. A standalone DLL download cannot confirm that the file matches your OneDrive build, Windows architecture, or current security updates. It can also introduce an unsigned or malicious library that Windows or OneDrive loads because of DLL search-order behavior.
Microsoft’s supported remedies are to reset the OneDrive sync app or uninstall and reinstall the official application. Those actions obtain the complete, matching program files and configuration instead of mixing one unknown library with an existing installation.

First verify that the newly installed copy is the desktop sync app and that the error names the current OneDrive installation rather than an old shortcut or another program. Recheck the path shown in the message, then inspect that copy’s signature. A message pointing to a different directory may indicate that another application is requesting a file with the same name.

If the new installation is Microsoft-signed and in a normal OneDrive directory but still crashes, repeat the reset once after setup and allow synchronization to complete. Keep the exact crash wording, time, and affected action for Microsoft support; those details distinguish a missing-file problem from a broader account, permissions, or application fault.

- Do not copy a DLL from another computer, even if both systems use the same Windows edition.
- Do not rename or delete a suspicious file before recording its full path and detection details.
- Do not install the Microsoft Store viewer app expecting it to replace the desktop synchronization client.
- Do not assume that a familiar filename proves authenticity; verify the signer and location.
- Do not use a random “DLL fixer” that promises a guaranteed repair or asks you to disable Windows security.
- Back up important work through your normal backup process before making major account or synchronization changes.

Frequently asked questions
Does FileSyncClient.dll run as a separate program?
No. It is a library used by the OneDrive client, so launching the DLL directly is neither a repair method nor a useful diagnostic. Start OneDrive itself after resetting or reinstalling it.
Why does the same filename appear in more than one folder?
OneDrive can retain versioned subfolders as it updates, and other software can also contain files with the same generic DLL name. The signer, complete path, and program that reported the error are needed to tell a normal OneDrive copy from an unrelated one.
Should I restore a quarantined copy to get OneDrive working?
Do not restore it solely to remove the error. Complete a full Windows Security scan, use Microsoft Defender Offline when recommended, and reinstall the official OneDrive client so any required library is supplied by the trusted installer.
Will reinstalling affect files that are online only?
Uninstalling stops the local synchronization program, but files already stored in your OneDrive account remain online. After reinstalling, sign in to the same account and review which folders you want available on the computer before synchronization resumes.
