Windows 10 usually is not miscalculating a folder. File Explorer deliberately avoids maintaining a live recursive total for every directory, so a folder can appear smaller than a subfolder, and the numbers in a drive view may not add up. Right-click the folder and open Properties for an on-demand calculation, then compare Size with Size on disk. If the drive still appears fuller than your visible folders explain, check Storage categories, hidden and protected files, permissions, junctions, hard links, alternate data streams and NTFS metadata before deleting anything.
This guide gives a Windows 10 workflow that identifies the discrepancy first and cleans only confirmed reclaimable data. It also explains why each measurement differs, so you can tell a display limitation from a real storage problem.

Why doesn’t File Explorer continuously show folder sizes?
Because calculating a folder total means walking through every file in every nested directory. Microsoft’s AskPerf team describes the behavior as designed: continuously scanning those trees would create processor overhead. Explorer therefore shows a folder’s basic information without keeping a continuously updated recursive byte total.
You can still obtain a current total when you need one. Hover over a folder for an on-demand tooltip, or open its Properties dialog for a more complete calculation. Properties is the better choice when you are comparing folders or investigating a drive that appears full, because it exposes both logical bytes and allocated space.

What the tooltip can and cannot tell you
The hover tooltip is a quick estimate generated when you request it. It is useful for spotting an obviously large directory, but it is not a replacement for recording the two values in Properties. A tooltip also reflects only what Windows can enumerate under your account and the current visibility settings.
Why a parent can look smaller than a child
If Explorer has not calculated the parent recursively, its displayed information is not a guaranteed sum of every descendant. A child folder’s tooltip or Properties dialog may have triggered a calculation while the parent has not. Calculate both folders in Properties before concluding that data is missing.
How do I check a folder’s real size in Windows 10?
Use the Properties dialog, and write down both measurements rather than relying on a single number. The following procedure works for one folder or for a group of selected items.
- Open File Explorer and browse to the folder you want to investigate.
- Right-click the folder and choose Properties.
- Wait for Windows to finish calculating the dialog. Record Size and Size on disk, including the units shown.
- If you need a combined total, select several files or folders together, right-click the selection and choose Properties. Record the same two fields for the selection.
- Repeat the process for the parent folder, the suspicious subfolder and any other directory you are comparing. Keep the results together so you do not compare a logical total from one dialog with an allocated total from another.
Properties is an accounting view, not a repair operation. Opening it does not change files, permissions or allocation. A long wait indicates that Windows is enumerating a large or complex tree; interrupting the calculation leaves the filesystem unchanged, but you will not have a reliable total.
What is the difference between “Size” and “Size on disk”?
Size is the logical total of file data. Size on disk is the amount of filesystem space allocated to store that data. NTFS allocates storage in clusters and also consumes space for filesystem metadata, so the two values can differ even when every file is healthy.
| Properties field | What it measures | Why it matters when diagnosing a full drive |
|---|---|---|
| Size | The logical byte total represented by the files Windows can enumerate. | Useful when estimating the content that must be copied, uploaded or backed up. |
| Size on disk | Allocated space consumed on the volume, including the effect of NTFS cluster allocation. | Closer to the space unavailable for another file on that volume. |
Why clusters create a difference
Files are stored in whole allocation units. A file that does not fill its final cluster still reserves that cluster, so allocated space can exceed logical bytes. The difference becomes more noticeable when a tree contains many small files or when the volume uses large clusters.

Why metadata also matters
NTFS maintains metadata that is not represented as ordinary user files in the folder tree. That space contributes to a volume’s used capacity even though it will not appear as a visible document, image or game file. Consequently, adding the logical sizes of visible folders cannot always reproduce the drive’s used-space figure.
Why does Windows say the drive is full when my folders do not add up?
Most mismatches fall into four comparisons: logical Size versus allocated Size on disk, visible versus hidden or protected content, files on the current volume versus content reached through a junction, and reclaimable personal or temporary data versus system-reserved space. Check these in that order so you do not delete data merely to compensate for a reporting difference.

Hidden and protected operating-system files
Explorer and the dir command normally count only files your account can access, and they normally omit hidden and protected operating-system files. A total made from visible folders can therefore be lower than the volume’s used-space value. Before comparing totals, confirm that you are looking at the same visibility scope and that your account has permission to enumerate the directories involved.
Do not remove protected files simply because they are absent from a normal listing. If a protected location is unexpectedly large, identify its owner and purpose through the Storage categories and folder Properties rather than changing visibility or permissions indiscriminately.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Junctions that point somewhere else
A junction is a directory entry that redirects access to another location. The destination can be on another volume. When Explorer follows that path while calculating a folder, it may include destination content, making one apparent folder total look larger than the data physically stored beneath its visible path.
Check whether a suspicious directory contains junctions before comparing parent and child totals. Treat the target volume as the place where the bytes are actually stored; deleting the junction is not the same as deleting the target data, and deleting a target can affect applications that rely on the link.
Hard links that expose one data stream through several names
A hard link gives the same underlying data stream more than one filename. Two names can therefore appear in different directories while consuming one stored stream. Adding both apparent file sizes double-counts the data, even though the volume has allocated it once. This explains why a manually added list can exceed the drive’s actual use; it does not indicate that NTFS has lost space.
Alternate data streams
NTFS can attach alternate data streams to a file. A normal listing shows the primary filename and may not reveal the extra stream as a separate item, although its bytes still occupy volume space. If a folder total seems lower than storage usage and ordinary files do not explain the gap, alternate streams are one of the NTFS features to investigate with a purpose-built diagnostic method rather than deleting files at random.
Long, invalid or reserved names
Paths longer than 255 characters, invalid names and reserved names can interfere with enumeration. A scan that cannot traverse one path may report less content than is physically present. Record the exact path and the error, then address the naming or access problem before trusting a comparison based on an incomplete traversal.
NTFS metadata and possible corruption
Metadata consumes space outside ordinary file totals. Corruption can also produce inconsistent results or prevent Windows from reading portions of a directory correctly. If Properties, Storage and a direct folder listing disagree after you have accounted for visibility and links, stop deleting and investigate the volume’s health and permissions. A discrepancy by itself is not proof of corruption.

How can I use Windows 10 Storage to find what is consuming the drive?
Settings provides a category-level view that complements folder Properties. It is especially useful for space that does not belong to a single personal folder.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Storage.
- Review the categories Windows presents, including Installed apps, Temporary files, System & reserved and other listed categories.
- Select the relevant drive for more detail if more than one drive is available.
- Compare the category totals with the folder Properties values you recorded. Treat a category total as a separate accounting view, not as a folder that should map one-to-one to a visible directory.
What “System & reserved” changes in the comparison
System-reserved space is part of the drive’s used capacity but is not normally represented as ordinary personal files. It can therefore explain why visible folders do not sum to the drive total. Keep this category separate from personal data when deciding what can be moved or deleted.

How to interpret Temporary files
Temporary files are a cleanup candidate only after you review what Windows lists. Select the category, read the descriptions and remove items you recognize as reclaimable. A category label is not permission to delete arbitrary files from system directories.
How do I find the largest personal files?
For personal data, File Explorer’s supported method is a Details view sorted by the Size column. This avoids guessing from folder names and gives you a file-level list to review.
- Open the folder or drive you want to examine in File Explorer.
- Choose View > Details.
- Click the Size column to sort. Click it again if you need to reverse ascending and descending order.
- Open likely large subfolders and repeat the sort. Check the file type and location before moving or deleting anything.
- For a selected group, open Properties to confirm the combined Size and Size on disk before taking action.
This method is intended for files your account can access. It will not, by itself, expose protected operating-system data, alternate streams or the destination content of every junction. Use the Storage view and the NTFS checks above when the largest visible files still do not explain the drive usage.
How should I compare two conflicting folder totals?
Make the comparison explicit instead of treating every number as the same kind of measurement. The following matrix identifies the question to ask and the likely interpretation.

|---|---|---|
| Size versus Size on disk | Record both fields in the same Properties dialog. | A gap is normally explained by clusters and NTFS allocation or metadata. |
| Visible versus hidden/protected | Determine whether the listing and your account can enumerate all relevant paths. | A visible-only total can undercount used space. |
| Current volume versus junction target | Identify directory links and where each target resides. | Explorer may include content stored on another volume when following a junction. |
| File names versus underlying streams | Consider hard links and alternate data streams. | Hard links can make a manual sum too high; alternate streams can make a listing too low. |
| Personal data versus system-reserved | Compare folder totals with Settings > System > Storage categories. | System-reserved capacity is not expected to appear as ordinary personal files. |
What should I do after identifying the space?
Clean only after you can name the category, folder or file responsible. Identification prevents a cleanup from masking a permissions issue, a junction mistake or a damaged directory.
Use Storage Sense and review temporary files
In Settings > System > Storage, review the Temporary files entry and use Storage Sense where appropriate. Read each item’s description and retain anything you still need. The goal is to remove confirmed temporary data, not to make the accounting numbers match by deleting unknown files.

Move or delete personal files deliberately
Use the Details view to select large personal files. Move files you still need to another available volume or storage location, and delete only files you have verified are disposable. Afterward, empty the Recycle Bin if you need the space returned immediately; files left there continue to consume capacity.
Check for unexpected growth with Windows Security
If a folder grows unexpectedly, run a scan with Windows Security before moving or deleting files. Malware can create hidden content or repeatedly generate files, and cleaning the symptom without addressing the cause allows the usage to return.
Do not use cleanup to “fix” accounting differences
External storage can hold files moved off the PC, but it does not correct a Size-versus-Size-on-disk distinction. Compression tools and generic cleaners likewise do not resolve junction, hard-link, permission or NTFS metadata explanations. Correct the interpretation first, then choose a cleanup action that matches the identified data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can I do when Properties, Storage and Explorer still disagree?
Use a controlled troubleshooting branch and preserve the evidence from each view.
If Properties is lower than Storage
Check hidden and protected locations, the System & reserved category and permissions. Then look for junction targets on other volumes and NTFS metadata. A lower Properties total is expected when the folder does not include all categories of used space on the drive.
If a parent Properties total is lower than a child
Recalculate both dialogs and verify that you are comparing the same field. Confirm that the child is actually inside the parent and is not a junction to another location. Check whether a previous scan was incomplete because of access errors or an unusually long or invalid path.
If a manual file sum is higher than the drive’s used space
Look for hard links, which can expose one data stream through multiple names. Also ensure that you have not added logical Size values while comparing them with allocated drive capacity. Use Size on disk for an allocation comparison.
If the discrepancy appears after a path or permission error
Record the exact path, account and error message. Restore appropriate access or correct the naming problem, then repeat the same Properties and Details checks. Do not assume that an unreadable path is empty.

If unexpected growth continues
Run Windows Security, inspect Storage categories again and identify which folder or category changes between checks. Persistent growth with no identifiable personal file warrants attention to protected content, links and filesystem health rather than repeated blind cleanup.
Can I prevent future confusion about folder sizes?
You cannot make Explorer maintain a live recursive total without changing its design, but you can make investigations consistent. Use Properties when you need a definitive folder calculation, record both fields, and use Storage for drive-level categories. Keep personal files organized so large-file sorting is meaningful, and treat hidden, protected and linked locations as separate cases during every comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA consistent record should include the folder path, the date you checked it, Size, Size on disk, the drive named in Storage and any access or link warning encountered. Repeating the same measurements after cleanup shows whether space was actually reclaimed or whether the original difference was only a reporting mismatch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will restarting Windows make the correct folder size appear?
A restart may refresh Explorer’s display, but it does not change the underlying distinction between logical Size and allocated Size on disk. Use Properties and Storage to obtain measurements instead of relying on a refresh as a diagnostic method.
Why does copying a folder to another drive change “Size on disk”?
Allocation is determined by the destination volume’s filesystem and cluster layout. The copied files can retain the same logical Size while consuming a different amount of allocated space on the new volume.
Can I safely delete a junction to reclaim the space it shows?
Deleting a junction removes the redirecting directory entry, not automatically the files in its target. Identify the target volume and the applications that use it before changing either the link or the destination data.
Does a file shown twice always mean I have two copies?
No. Hard links can present one underlying data stream through multiple filenames. Treat duplicate-looking names as a linking question and compare allocated space rather than adding both logical file sizes.
