A Metroidvania is best understood as an exploration-led game built around a connected or revisitable world: as you gain abilities, items, or knowledge, new routes open and familiar places take on new possibilities. That pattern—not a single camera angle, combat system, or map interface—is the most useful way to recognize the genre, though its boundaries remain disputed.
What defines a Metroidvania?
The core loop is explore, discover, grow, and return. You move through spaces that connect or can be revisited, find a capability or clue, and use it to reach routes that were previously inaccessible. In a 2025 PLAYISM roundtable, developers described the freedom to move back and forth and gradually fill out a map as part of the genre’s appeal. Designer Koji Igarashi’s approach, discussed in a 2014 interview, likewise centers on exploration with a gradually expanding toolset: a player explores, then doubles back when new capabilities make another area reachable.

There is no universally accepted checklist. A narrower convention describes side-scrolling action-adventures on a continuous map, where finding the right item makes an obstacle passable and encourages backtracking. Broader uses include some 3D games and may include games with RPG elements. These are competing ways of drawing the boundary, not rules that every game must satisfy. Nintendo describes the Metroid series more broadly as exploratory action in a maze-like world where items and weapons expand the areas Samus can visit.
How exploration shapes the experience
Exploration is more than moving through scenery. Players choose routes, inspect spaces, and uncover destinations or secrets rather than simply clearing a fixed chain of isolated stages. The world gradually becomes more legible: a route may be visible before it is reachable, and a discovery can change what the player understands about where to go next.

Abilities can deepen that discovery when they invite experimentation instead of serving only as keys for matching barriers. Supraland developer David Münnich has argued for versatile tools that let players see the world differently. That is a design preference, not a genre requirement: some games use more narrowly targeted unlocks, while others make one ability useful in several situations.
Abilities, gates, and the reason to return
What is an ability gate?
An ability gate is a barrier or route that cannot be passed until the player has a relevant capability or item. In Metroid Dread, for example, new capabilities expand which doors Samus can open, walls she can destroy, and paths she can take. A visible but impassable obstacle can signal that the world has more to offer; returning after gaining the right power can turn that earlier dead end into a route, shortcut, or secret.

Not every ability works like a key
Some abilities mainly unlock a particular kind of obstacle. Others support several interactions or different play styles. The Ori and the Will of the Wisps developers discussed Spirit Shards that help shape how players approach the game, while Münnich emphasized tools with multiple possible uses in Supraland. This difference affects how much a new power broadens play, but it does not determine whether a game qualifies as a Metroidvania.

A return trip has a clear purpose when a new ability makes a blocked route viable, a shortcut eases travel, or new knowledge changes the meaning of an earlier space. Backtracking is therefore not simply retracing steps: it can connect a new discovery to places the player already knows. There is no established universal threshold for how much backtracking is too much; whether it feels rewarding or tedious is a matter of pacing and player experience.

What the map does—and does not—tell you
A map can help players orient themselves, remember unexplored branches, plan routes, and notice previously blocked places after gaining an ability. Nintendo’s Metroid Dread materials describe map markers, hints for hidden items, and highlighting that can point players toward places to investigate. The development team called the map a foundation for exploration.
An in-game map is common, but it is not a defining requirement. In the 2025 PLAYISM roundtable, Shutaro Iida said that gradually filling out a map was what most strongly evoked the genre for him; a 2025-published book excerpt discusses maps as part of the tradition. By contrast, Supraland’s developer deliberately omitted a minimap to encourage players to look directly at the world. Map interfaces are a design choice: they change how much players rely on memory, visual cues, and route planning, but they do not settle the genre label.

How to compare two games
There is no formal scoring standard, but these questions help identify how strongly a game uses the shared design pattern and where its approach differs:
- World structure: Are areas interconnected or revisitable, or does the game mainly move through isolated stages?
- Progression: Do new traversal abilities, items, or knowledge open routes?
- Route choice: Can players choose where to explore, or is progress mostly a fixed sequence?
- Ability design: Do powers enable varied interactions, or mainly open one matching barrier at a time?
- Navigation: How do maps, markers, and cues in the world help players find their way or remember opportunities?
These comparisons are more useful than treating a side-scrolling view, a particular combat style, or a minimap as a pass-or-fail test. They also make it possible to describe a game precisely: for example, as a 3D game with Metroidvania-style progression, or as a narrower side-scrolling take on the convention.

Why the genre boundary stays fuzzy
“Metroidvania” is a practical label for a recognizable cluster of design ideas, not a definition backed by a single authority or measured consensus. Some people use it narrowly for side-scrolling action-adventures with continuous maps and item-gated routes; others emphasize the larger structure of exploration, revisiting, and progression, including games in 3D. When the label is debatable, explain which parts of that pattern a game uses rather than presenting one convention as universal.
