How to Fix Forts Crashing on PC

Troubleshoot Forts crashes by symptom: update Windows and drivers, repair Visual C++, verify Steam files, isolate Workshop content, reset migrated settings, and send the right logs to EarthWork Games.

If Forts crashes on Windows, start with the least destructive fixes: restart Steam and Windows, update Windows and your graphics driver, verify the game files, then test without Workshop content, overlays, DLC, and unusual rendering settings. For an immediate crash after launch, also repair Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and check whether security software is blocking Forts. If the problem began after upgrading to Windows 11 or moving the installation, back up and reset the game’s user configuration instead of immediately reinstalling.

First, identify when Forts crashes

The crash stage points to different causes. Note which description matches your problem before changing anything:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Steam shows “Preparing to Launch,” then returns to the Library: damaged files, missing runtime components, graphics-driver problems, blocked executables, or interfering software are possible.
  • The game opens and closes immediately: an outdated Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable or antivirus, parental-control, or other administrative software blocking the game are documented possibilities.
  • The game reaches loading and then freezes or closes: Workshop content, a map, DLC, graphics settings, or a damaged user configuration may be involved.
  • It crashes when starting a skirmish, campaign, or quick match: test a default map without mods, custom content, DLC, or overlays.
  • It crashes only in multiplayer: mismatched mods or DLC, missing scripts, corrupted map data, host/client state, desynchronization, or a particularly complex world may be responsible.
  • It crashes during or after a match: check whether the problem is tied to Vulkan, replay recording, a particular map, a large fort, or one weapon or device interaction.
  • The screen goes black, the graphics driver resets, or the whole PC reboots: investigate graphics-driver, temperature, power, or broader hardware stability rather than treating the issue as only a broken game installation.

Forts is the Steam game by EarthWork Games, app ID 410900. Its Workshop, multiplayer, DLC, and modding systems create more possible failure points than a completely vanilla installation. The Steam store lists it as a 64-bit Windows game. See the Steam listing.

1. Restart Steam and Windows

  1. Exit Forts.
  2. Exit Steam completely, including from the notification-area icon.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Open Steam again and launch Forts before changing files or settings.

This clears a stuck Steam process, incomplete Workshop operation, or temporary driver state. Steam includes restarting Steam among its initial Windows launch troubleshooting steps.

2. Update Windows, the graphics driver, and Visual C++

Install Windows updates

Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart. Windows Update can also deliver relevant .NET Framework updates. Steam notes that some games and AMD Radeon drivers require an up-to-date .NET Framework. Read Steam’s general launch troubleshooting guidance.

Update or roll back the graphics driver

Use the manufacturer’s official download page:

If the crashing began immediately after a driver update, a clean driver installation or rollback to the previous known-good version may be a better diagnostic than installing the newest package again. Updating drivers is a sensible test, not proof that the driver caused the crash.

Repair Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable

EarthWork Games developers have identified an out-of-date Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable as one of the common reasons Forts closes immediately after launch. Download the current Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015–2022 from Microsoft’s official page.

  1. Download and install the x64 package for the 64-bit game.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Launch Forts again.

Installing the x86 package can be useful for other games, but the evidence here does not establish it as a Forts-specific requirement. Do not download individual DLL files or “DLL fixer” utilities from third-party websites.

3. Verify Forts’ Steam files

  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Right-click Forts and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Wait for the operation to finish, restart Steam, and test the game.

Steam may redownload or repair damaged files. A successful verification does not rule out a broken configuration, Workshop item, blocked executable, runtime problem, or incompatible driver. Verification is safer than deleting the installation and should come before a reinstall. Steam explains this process in its general launch troubleshooting guide.

4. Disable Workshop content, mods, and DLC

Test the base game before assuming the whole installation is broken:

  1. Temporarily unsubscribe from or disable recently added Workshop items.
  2. Launch a default map with no custom map or mod.
  3. If that works, re-enable content in batches or one item at a time.
  4. Remove outdated or duplicate versions of the same mod.
  5. If the crash started after enabling DLC, disable the relevant DLC temporarily and test a vanilla map.

For multiplayer, every player should have matching required maps, mods, and DLC. Let Workshop downloads finish before joining a lobby. Official Forts updates have addressed crashes involving missing mod scripts, invalid mod data, Workshop downloads completing at sensitive times, maps requiring unsupported DLC, and invalid or corrupt multiplayer data. Relevant official notes include Update 1.36.0, Update 1.30, Update 1.29, and Update 1.28.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These update pages document specific bug fixes; they do not mean every crash is caused by a mod. Test systematically rather than deleting all saved content immediately.

5. Check antivirus and parental-control software

EarthWork Games has also identified antivirus, parental-control, and similar administrative software as common causes of immediate closure. Check the security program’s quarantine, protection history, or blocked-app log for Forts.exe, Steam, or the game’s installation directory.

  1. Restore or allow the file only if it came from the official Steam installation.
  2. Add a narrowly scoped exception for Forts or Steam.
  3. Retest the game.
  4. Remove the exception if it makes no difference.

A short, controlled test is different from leaving antivirus protection disabled. Do not permanently disable Windows Security or other protection.

6. Turn off overlays and background hooks

Steam recommends disabling nonessential software when a game will not launch. For one controlled test, close or disable:

  • Discord overlay
  • Xbox Game Bar
  • NVIDIA or AMD overlays
  • MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner overlays
  • OBS and other recording tools
  • FPS counters
  • RGB and peripheral-control utilities
  • Screen filters and hardware-monitoring overlays

This is an isolation step, not a claim that any one program is a confirmed Forts bug. If the crash stops, re-enable programs one at a time to find the conflict.

7. Test Vulkan, OpenGL, and video settings

If Forts opens far enough to expose its video options, test the other available graphics API under Options > Video. If Vulkan crashes, use OpenGL as a workaround; if OpenGL is the problem, test Vulkan after removing custom content. Neither API is universally the correct choice.

Also reset unusual:

  • Resolution
  • Refresh rate
  • Fullscreen or windowed mode
  • VSync
  • Window size

Official notes document Vulkan-related image-handling fixes as well as VSync, refresh-rate, window-resizing, and terrain-rendering fixes. That makes these settings useful diagnostic variables, not guaranteed solutions. See the official 1.30 and 1.27 notes.

8. Reset configuration after a Windows 11 upgrade or installation move

A specific issue reported by an EarthWork Games developer affects some Windows 11 users who moved the Forts installation, migrated from another PC, or upgraded to Windows 11 after the game had previously worked. In reported cases, loading could stall while the log indicated that settings.lua could not be loaded because its data table was absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reported files are in:

<Steam installation>steamappscommonFortsusers<yourSteamID>

Before changing anything:

  1. Close Forts and Steam.
  2. Copy the entire users<yourSteamID> folder to the Desktop as a backup.
  3. Rename the original folder, for example to <yourSteamID>.backup.
  4. Start Forts so it can generate fresh user settings.
  5. Test the game.
  6. Restore individual files from the backup only if necessary.

This is a targeted configuration-reset test, not a universal fix. The developer’s report and requested files are documented in the Windows 11 support discussion. Do not delete the original folder without a backup.

9. Use the right test for the failure pattern

If Forts never opens

  1. Restart Windows and Steam.
  2. Update Windows and the graphics driver.
  3. Verify Steam files.
  4. Install or repair the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable.
  5. Check antivirus and parental-control logs.
  6. As a diagnostic only, run the game’s executable directly from its installation folder.
  7. Collect logs and contact EarthWork Games if it still fails.

Steam documents direct executable testing for cases where it reports that a third-party game is unavailable. Do not use this to bypass Steam permanently; it is simply another way to distinguish a Steam-launch problem from an application problem. See Steam’s unavailable-game guidance.

If it crashes while loading

  1. Disable Workshop content.
  2. Test a default map.
  3. Test without DLC.
  4. Try the alternative graphics API.
  5. If Windows 11 or an installation move is involved, back up and reset user settings.

If it crashes only in multiplayer

  1. Test single-player vanilla content.
  2. Confirm that players have matching maps, mods, and DLC.
  3. Wait for Workshop downloads to finish.
  4. Have the host try a simpler map and less complex fort.
  5. Record whether the host, a client, or everyone crashes.

If it crashes after playing for a while

  1. Check GPU temperature, RAM use, and general system stability.
  2. Disable overlays and recording software.
  3. Try lower graphics settings and the other graphics API.
  4. Test a smaller or default map.
  5. Check whether the crash occurs during replay, map editing, or a particular weapon interaction.
  6. If other games also crash, investigate the graphics driver, temperatures, power, and hardware stability.

10. Check requirements without blaming the PC too quickly

  • Pentium Dual-Core 2.7 GHz
  • 8 GB RAM
  • Intel HD Graphics 520
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • 3 GB available storage

These are minimums, not a guarantee of stable performance. Steam warns that systems at or near minimum requirements can experience launch or performance problems. Also, although the game listing displays legacy Windows versions, the Steam client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024, so Vista, 7, and 8 are not practical Steam environments for this troubleshooting guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A minimum-spec system may have less headroom for large physics-heavy forts, custom maps, background applications, and modern Windows configurations, but a crash alone does not prove that the hardware is too weak.

11. Check for a game-specific bug

Keep Steam on the current stable build and allow all updates to finish. Avoid beta branches unless you intentionally use one. EarthWork Games’ update history shows fixes for several distinct crash categories, including replay startup, Workshop operations, missing mod scripts, invalid map or team data, complex multiplayer worlds, Vulkan image handling, map-editor conditions, and worlds with more than 40 struts connected to a joint.

Search the official Forts update history for a symptom matching your crash. Update 1.36.0 is an official relevant update page, but it should not be treated here as proof of the newest live build. If the crash is reproducible only with one map, mod, weapon, replay, or multiplayer state, report that specific reproduction rather than assuming the entire PC is defective.

12. Send useful evidence to EarthWork Games

If the steps above fail, include enough detail for the developer to distinguish a launch, configuration, content, rendering, or system problem. Send:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

For the reported Windows 11 loading issue, the developer specifically requested:

log.txt
settings.lua
settings_hardware.lua

They are reported in:

<Steam installation>steamappscommonFortsusers<yourSteamID>

Send the relevant files and system details to [email protected]. Steam’s Forts technical-support page also directs players toward EarthWork Games support and the game’s discussions and community resources.

Should you reinstall Forts?

Reinstalling is reasonable only after verification, runtime repair, security checks, content isolation, and configuration testing. It may not help when the cause is an outdated runtime, blocked executable, broken settings file, Workshop item, graphics driver, Windows 11 migration issue, or a bug triggered by a specific map or rendering API. Back up users<yourSteamID> before removing anything, and do not delete the entire Steam userdata, Workshop, or save collection as an early troubleshooting step.
