The wandering trader is a temporary merchant, not a permanent villager replacement. It can appear near a player in the Overworld with two leashed trader llamas, offer hard-to-source blocks and items, and leave before you have another chance to use its inventory. The practical priorities are to understand the spawn checks, secure the trader immediately, and judge each offer against your world’s shortages rather than assuming one trade is always best.

At a glance: spawn, lifetime and trade changes
| Question | Answer | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it appear? | Near an eligible player in the Overworld, usually within 48 blocks, accompanied by two leashed trader llamas. | Bedrock Edition can use a claimed bell within that range as the target; Java surface-selection rules generally keep ordinary cave locations from qualifying. |
| How often is a spawn attempted? | The scheduler checks about once per Minecraft day. The attempt sequence is 25%, then 50%, then 75% on later checks until a trader appears or no player qualifies. | When a qualifying player is found, the source describes a final 10% spawn chance. |
| How long does it stay? | 48,000 loaded ticks, approximately 40 real minutes or two Minecraft days. | Only loaded time counts. Unloading the relevant chunks pauses the timer. |
| Can it be made permanent? | No reliable permanent conversion exists for the wandering trader. | A name tag, boat or minecart does not prevent its normal despawn. |
| What changed in Java testing? | Snapshot 25w07a reported better prices, more trades and larger stock for many items, plus buying offers. | Snapshot behavior is version-sensitive; verify your Java release before relying on exact offers or prices. |
The timing figures and ordinary spawn behavior are documented by Minecraft Wiki, accessed 15 October 2026. Mojang’s Java Team announced the trade changes for snapshot 25w07a on 13 February 2025.
How wandering-trader spawning works
The daily scheduler
A wandering trader is not rolled continuously every few seconds. A 24,000-tick counter—one Minecraft day, or about 20 real-life minutes—drives the checks. The sequence below describes the scheduler’s attempt chances:

| Check | Attempt chance | What must also be true |
|---|---|---|
| First eligible check | 25% | An eligible player and a valid spawn target must be found. |
| Second eligible check | 50% | The previous check did not produce a trader and eligibility still exists. |
| Later checks | 75% | The game continues checking until a trader appears or no player qualifies. |
| Final roll after finding a player | 10% | The source describes this roll when a qualifying player is found. |
These percentages are stages in the game’s scheduled process, not a promise that a trader will arrive after a fixed number of days. A world can go through several checks without a result because player eligibility, terrain and the final roll all matter.
Where the game looks
The trader normally appears close to a player in the Overworld, generally within 48 blocks. It arrives with two trader llamas already leashed, so a sudden pair of llamas near your base can be a useful visual clue even before you see the merchant.
Bedrock Edition can use a claimed bell within 48 blocks as the target for the trader. If you are trying to attract visits to a settlement, claiming a bell in the area you actually occupy is therefore relevant on Bedrock. This bell behavior should not be assumed to work identically on Java.
Java’s surface-selection rules generally prevent an ordinary underground cave from being selected as the spawn location. Terrain edges, player position and unusual geometry can create edge cases, so “I was underground” is not by itself proof that the scheduler failed. Check the surface around the player and nearby open spaces before concluding that the trader is missing.

How to wait without wasting a visit
- Stay in the Overworld near the area where you want to find the trader. The spawn search is tied to eligible players and loaded terrain.
- Keep a safe, visible area available on the surface. Remove hazards that could kill a trader or its llamas immediately after arrival.
- Use the passage of Minecraft days as your expectation, not a stopwatch that guarantees a visit. The scheduler’s staged chances and the final roll make the result random.
- Search around the player’s position after each scheduled opportunity. A trader can be close enough to exist but hidden behind trees, terrain or buildings.
- On Bedrock, ensure the bell you expect to guide the visit is claimed and within the relevant range.
Despawn timing and what actually keeps a trader around
The loaded-time countdown
Once present, a wandering trader has a lifetime of 48,000 loaded ticks. That equals roughly 40 real minutes, or two Minecraft days, when the chunks containing it remain loaded. The trading screen does not advance this timer, giving you time to inspect offers while the interface is open.
| Action or condition | Effect on despawn timer |
|---|---|
| Trader and its chunk stay loaded | The countdown continues. |
| Relevant chunk unloads | The countdown pauses until the area is loaded again. |
| Opening the trading screen | Time spent in the screen is excluded from the countdown. |
| Applying a name tag | Does not make the trader permanent. |
| Putting it in a boat or minecart | Does not stop the normal despawn. |
“Keeping” a trader therefore means preserving access during its finite visit, not converting it into a permanent resident. If you leave the area unloaded, the clock waits; once you return and load it again, the remaining lifetime continues to run.

A practical protection pen
Build a small, well-lit enclosure before trading whenever possible. Give the trader and both llamas enough room that they are not trapped against a wall, and block openings that let hostile mobs reach them. A roof helps against environmental hazards, while a simple fence or wall prevents the llamas from wandering away when you move around the pen.
Do not spend the whole visit transporting the trader across the map. A boat or minecart can be useful for positioning, but neither changes the despawn rule. Secure the nearby area first, then inspect offers and trade while the location remains loaded.

What the wandering trader buys and sells
The Java 25w07a update
In the Java snapshot announcement dated 13 February 2025, Mojang’s Java Team wrote: “The Wandering Trader now has better prices, more trades and a larger amount of stock for many items.” The same announcement adds: “They will also now buy basic supplies from players, so it’s possible to get some emeralds by helping them prepare for their next journey even if you don’t feel like buying anything.”
Those statements describe snapshot behavior, not a guarantee that every release or edition has the same table. Treat the following additions as version-sensitive Java information and check the release notes or in-game offers for the version you are actually playing.
Buying offers: items you can sell to the trader
The official buying list contains six basic supplies. Each trader offers two items from that list, so you cannot assume that every visit will buy every supply.
| Possible buying item | What to check before gathering it |
|---|---|
| Water Bottle | Whether the current trader selected it and how many units the offer accepts. |
| Water Bucket | Whether the bucket is returned or consumed as part of the displayed trade; follow the in-game result before committing supplies. |
| Milk Bucket | Whether you have a safe, repeatable cow source nearby. |
| Fermented Spider Eye | Whether the ingredients cost more in your world than the emerald return. |
| Baked Potato | Whether a crop or villager food supply makes the item inexpensive to replace. |
| Hay Bale | Whether wheat production makes the bale a surplus rather than an essential animal-feed reserve. |
The two-item selection is why the buying side is best viewed as an opportunistic emerald refund. If the trader does not display the item, gathering it will not create a new buying offer.

Additional possible sales in the snapshot pool
The 25w07a changes also identified new possible items that the trader can sell. Exact prices and stock depend on the version and the randomly generated inventory.
| Possible sale | Why it can matter | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Acacia, Birch, Dark Oak, Jungle, Oak, Spruce, Pale Oak or Cherry logs | Provides wood types that may be distant or absent from the local biome. | Compare the emerald price with travel, sapling access and the amount of wood you need. |
| Enchanted Iron Pickaxe | Can bridge an early gear gap when you lack an enchanting setup or replacement tools. | Inspect the enchantment and durability shown in the trade; an iron tool is not automatically a bargain. |
| Potion of Invisibility | Useful for a specific exploration or mob-avoidance plan. | Its value depends on the task; a potion without a clear use can be an expensive curiosity. |
The announcement says the trader has more trades and larger stock for many items, but it does not establish one universal quantity or price for every release. Read the actual trade window rather than planning around a number copied from a different snapshot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to identify the best deal in your world
There is no universally best wandering-trader trade. The right decision depends on four variables: scarcity, emerald cost, stock and replacement cost. Use the following framework before spending.
1. Measure scarcity in the current seed
Start with access, not the item’s reputation. A nearby forest makes an oak-log offer ordinary; a world whose nearest cherry or pale-oak biome is thousands of blocks away makes the corresponding log offer much more valuable. Rare biome blocks, unusual wood and travel-intensive materials can justify a premium during the early game.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Scarcity also changes over time. A log that is precious before you obtain a Nether portal may be routine after exploration, while a potion may become more useful when you begin a dangerous structure run. Re-evaluate the offer against the project you are starting now.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Compare the displayed emerald cost
Look at the complete trade, including the number of emeralds and the number of items received. Do not call a trade cheap merely because the item is difficult to find; a high price can erase the time saved by the visit. Conversely, paying a premium for a single missing block may be rational if the alternative is a long expedition that delays a build.
3. Account for stock and possible lockout
Record how many units are available before making the first exchange. The updated system can provide larger stock for many items, but stock remains finite for the visit. If an offer locks after its displayed supply is used, that is a hard limit on the value you can extract. Prioritize the scarce or project-critical units rather than spending emeralds on filler purchases.
4. Price the replacement route
Estimate what the item would cost through your existing farms, other villagers, travel or Nether access. A baked potato bought with emeralds is weak when your potato field is overflowing, while a distant wood type can be efficient if acquiring it requires a long, risky journey. Include tool durability, food and travel time in your mental replacement price.
Decision examples
| Your situation | Offer that may be strong | Reason to decline |
|---|---|---|
| Early world with no access to a target wood biome | The matching log type, if the price fits your build and the stock is useful. | You already have a nearby forest or enough saplings to grow the wood. |
| Mining before you have reliable enchanting resources | An enchanted iron pickaxe with a useful enchantment and acceptable durability. | The enchantment is irrelevant, the tool is nearly spent, or diamonds are already plentiful. |
| Preparing a stealth-focused exploration trip | A potion of invisibility that directly supports the route. | You have no planned use, or the emerald cost competes with more urgent equipment. |
| Large crop surplus and a displayed buying offer | Hay bales, baked potatoes or another offered supply made from excess production. | The ingredients are needed for animals, food or crafting and are not truly surplus. |
A step-by-step trading routine
- Find and secure the arrival point. Search the surface near the player, then put the trader and llamas in a lit enclosure before hostile mobs or terrain can separate them.
- Open the trade screen and inventory the visit. Read every displayed offer, note prices, output quantities and available stock, and check whether the trader is buying one of the six basic supplies.
- Separate needs from curiosities. Mark items required for the build, expedition or tool upgrade you are undertaking. Ignore a tempting offer that has no current use.
- Apply the four-axis test. Compare local scarcity, emerald cost, stock and replacement route. This prevents a rare-looking item from consuming resources that would solve a larger problem elsewhere.
- Trade the highest-priority units first. The visit is temporary and stock can be exhausted, so do not assume you can return later for the same quantity.
- Store the result safely. Move purchased items and emeralds away from the pen while the area remains loaded, then decide whether the remaining stock justifies more spending.
Java and Bedrock checks before relying on a trade
Edition differences
The claimed-bell targeting behavior described above applies to Bedrock. Java’s ordinary surface-selection rules and player-position checks can produce a different-looking result. If a guide written for one edition tells you to reproduce a specific setup, verify that the rule exists in your edition before rebuilding it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Release versus snapshot
The better prices, expanded trade pool, larger stock and buying offers were announced for Java snapshot 25w07a. Snapshot content can change before release, and Bedrock may follow a different schedule. Exact prices, quantities and availability should therefore be taken from the trade window in your current version, not treated as permanent properties of every wandering trader.
Troubleshooting common problems
No trader appears after several days
- Confirm that you are in the Overworld and that an eligible player remains in the area where the game is checking.
- Wait through additional scheduled checks; the 25%, 50% and 75% stages are chances, not guaranteed arrivals.
- Inspect the surface and nearby open terrain instead of searching only caves or enclosed rooms.
- On Bedrock, check that the intended bell is claimed and close enough to serve as a target.
- Make sure an existing trader has not already spawned somewhere nearby and gone unnoticed.
The trader vanished sooner than expected
- Remember that the countdown uses loaded ticks. If the area stayed loaded, the normal two-day lifetime can expire while you build or mine nearby.
- Trading-screen time is excluded, but ordinary time spent in the loaded world is not.
- A name tag, boat or minecart does not cancel despawning.
- If the chunk was unloaded, the timer paused rather than resetting; returning to the area resumes the remaining lifetime.
The offer is not the one shown in a guide
- Check the edition and exact game version.
- Determine whether the guide describes Java snapshot 25w07a rather than a current release.
- Remember that inventories are random and the buying side selects two items from its possible list.
- Use the displayed price and stock in your own world as the final authority.
Bottom line
Use a wandering trader as a time-limited source of scarcity relief, not as a dependable permanent shop. Wait through the scheduled checks in a safe Overworld area, secure the trader as soon as it arrives, and inspect the full inventory before spending. A rare log, useful enchanted pickaxe, targeted invisibility potion or emeralds from genuine surplus can be an excellent deal; the same offer can be wasteful in a world where the item is easy to farm or replace. Version and edition checks matter most for the newer Java offers announced with snapshot 25w07a.
