If GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App says a game cannot be optimized, work through NVIDIA’s eligibility checks in this order: install the game’s latest official patch, launch it once until the main menu appears, scan the folder that actually contains its files, and update the NVIDIA driver. If a clean driver installation does not restore the control, the game or your installed GPU may simply lack an applicable NVIDIA optimization profile. In that case, the game can still run normally; adjust its graphics settings in the game itself.
GeForce Experience is still the phrase many PC players search for, but NVIDIA now presents the NVIDIA App as its current companion. It incorporates GeForce Experience features such as driver management and Optimal Playable Settings, so the labels may differ slightly while the troubleshooting logic remains the same.

What does “game cannot be optimized” mean?
The message does not necessarily indicate a broken game. NVIDIA optimization is a set of recommended graphics settings for a particular game version, NVIDIA driver, and supported GPU. The application must first identify the installation and find a matching profile before it can show an Optimize control.
There are three different failure states:
- Detection failure: the game is not listed because the application has not scanned the folder containing the installed game files.
- Eligibility failure: the game is listed, but it has not been patched or launched, so required configuration files are missing or outdated.
- Profile or hardware limitation: the game is detected and current, but NVIDIA has no applicable recommendation profile for that title and installed hardware.
Separating those states prevents the most common mistake: buying or replacing hardware when the actual problem is a wrong scan path or a game that has never completed its first run.

What should I do first to restore optimization?
Use this sequence. It starts with reversible game-side checks and ends with the more disruptive driver repair.
- Install the game’s latest official update, then close and reopen GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App.
- Start the game and let it reach its main menu. Exit normally so it can finish writing its first-run configuration files.
- Scan the folder that contains the installed game files. If the launcher library and the executable are in different locations, add the executable’s folder and scan again.
- Install the current Game Ready Driver for the NVIDIA GPU in the PC.
- If a normal driver update fails, perform NVIDIA’s clean installation: close other applications and GPU utilities, run the installer as administrator, choose Custom (Advanced), select Perform a clean installation, complete setup, and restart Windows.
- Open the game page again and try Optimize. If the game is present but no recommendation is offered, use the game’s own graphics menu because the title or GPU may not have a matching NVIDIA profile.
Each step addresses a different dependency. Repeating the scan will not create a missing configuration file, and reinstalling a driver will not make an unsupported title eligible.
How do I update the game and create its configuration files?
NVIDIA says optimal settings are designed for the latest official game version. A title that is several patches behind can be recognized but still fail the optimization check.
Install the latest official patch
Open the launcher that installed the game and allow it to finish downloading and verifying updates. Wait for the launcher to report that the game is current; do not start troubleshooting while an update is paused, queued, or being validated. After the patch completes, quit the launcher and reopen the NVIDIA application so it refreshes the game’s status.
For games that update through more than one launcher, update through the launcher that owns the installation. Copying a newer executable into an older installation is not a substitute for the official update process.
Run the game through its first menu
Launch the game normally and wait until the main menu or another point where graphics settings are available. Then exit from the game’s own menu. Games often create their configuration files during this first run; NVIDIA identifies those files as necessary for optimization.

If the game crashes before reaching a menu, fix that launch problem first. Optimization cannot reliably write recommendations to an installation that has never produced its normal configuration files. Do not delete those files as a first troubleshooting step: their absence is one reason the application may reject optimization.
How do I scan the correct game folder?
A game appears in GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App only after the application scans a location containing the installed game. Scanning a launcher shortcut, a download cache, or a library folder that contains only manifests may not expose the executable.
In GeForce Experience
- Open GeForce Experience.
- Open Settings and locate the games scan locations.
- Add the folder in which the game’s installed files and executable reside.
- Choose Scan for Games.
- Return to the game list and open the title’s page.
In the NVIDIA App
Open the NVIDIA App’s games library and its scan or library-location settings, add the installation directory, and run a new scan. The exact screen arrangement can change as the NVIDIA App replaces GeForce Experience, but the required location is the same: the folder containing the installed game, not merely the launcher that starts it.
When the launcher and game are in different folders
Some launchers keep shortcuts and metadata in one library while storing the actual game under another directory or drive. Find the folder that contains the game’s executable, add that folder to the NVIDIA scan locations, and scan again. If the title is still absent, confirm that the scan points to the current installation rather than an old copy left after a move or reinstall.

A successful scan changes the problem from “the app cannot find the game” to an eligibility or profile question. If the title appears but the Optimize control is unavailable, scanning again is unlikely to help.
How do I update the NVIDIA driver without making the problem worse?
Use the current Game Ready Driver intended for the installed NVIDIA GPU. NVIDIA documents that background applications and Windows Update can interfere with driver installation, so close other programs before starting and avoid running a Windows Update at the same time.

Normal driver update
- Open GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App and go to the driver section.
- Check for the current Game Ready Driver for the GPU installed in the PC.
- Download and install it, allowing the installer to finish without launching games or GPU-tuning utilities.
- Restart Windows, then reopen the NVIDIA application and check the game page.
If the installation completes normally and the game remains detected but unavailable for optimization, the driver itself may not be the limiting factor. Move to the profile and hardware checks instead of repeatedly reinstalling the same package.
When to use a clean installation
A clean installation is appropriate when a normal update fails, the driver registration is damaged, or the installer cannot complete. It removes the existing NVIDIA driver components before installing the selected package; because it changes the driver state, use it after the game update, first launch, and scan checks.
- Close games, GPU monitoring or overclocking utilities, and other open applications.
- Start the NVIDIA driver installer with administrator privileges.
- Accept the license screens and choose Custom (Advanced) when asked for the installation type.
- Enable Perform a clean installation.
- Finish the installation without interrupting it.
- Reboot Windows even if the installer does not insist on an immediate restart.
After the reboot, open the NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience, confirm that the GPU and driver are recognized, and revisit the game page. A clean install repairs driver integrity; it cannot add an optimization profile that NVIDIA does not provide.
What if the game is detected but still has no Optimize button?
Detection does not guarantee optimization. NVIDIA describes the feature as per-game recommendations tied to NVIDIA hardware and drivers. A game can launch successfully while lacking a profile for its title, edition, game version, or installed GPU.
Check the title and edition
Look at the detected game’s name and installation path. If multiple editions or test builds are installed, the application may be looking at a different copy from the one you launch. Remove obsolete scan locations or add the active installation, then rescan.
Consider profile coverage
NVIDIA does not promise an Optimize control for every PC game. Newly released games, unusual launchers, beta builds, and titles with no supported profile may remain without recommendations even when the driver is current. The absence of a button is then a coverage limitation, not proof that the installation is damaged.

Consider the installed GPU
Optimization depends on supported NVIDIA GPU hardware and a compatible driver. Integrated graphics, a non-NVIDIA adapter, or an older GPU outside the profile’s supported range can prevent recommendations while leaving the game playable. Verify which adapter Windows and the NVIDIA application identify as the active GPU before treating hardware as the cause.

Usually, no. A new NVIDIA GeForce graphics card is relevant only when the installed hardware is the actual compatibility blocker. It will not repair a scan location that points to the wrong folder, create first-run game configuration files, install a missing game patch, or fix an interrupted driver installation.

How can I tell whether the repair worked?
After each change, close and reopen the NVIDIA application rather than relying on a stale game-library page. A successful detection repair places the game in the library. A successful eligibility repair adds an available optimization action on that game’s page. A successful driver repair shows the GPU and newly installed driver normally in the application.
If the title is visible, current, launched once, and still has no Optimize action after a clean driver installation, stop repeating the same steps. That combination strongly indicates that NVIDIA has no applicable profile for the title or hardware. Open the game’s graphics settings and select a preset or adjust options manually; the lack of NVIDIA recommendations does not by itself prevent the game from running.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not scan only the launcher: the application needs the installed game files, including the executable.
- Do not skip the first launch: a newly installed game may not have the configuration files required for recommendations.
- Do not run a driver installer alongside Windows Update or GPU utilities: background activity can interfere with installation.
- Do not assume every detected game is eligible: profile availability depends on the title and supported hardware.
- Do not treat a hardware purchase as a universal fix: it cannot correct game files, scan paths, or driver-installation errors.
Can I use the game’s own graphics settings instead?
Yes. When no NVIDIA profile applies, the game’s graphics menu is the supported fallback. Use its preset first, then adjust resolution, texture quality, shadows, anti-aliasing, and similar options according to the frame-rate and image-quality balance you want. This is a manual configuration choice, not evidence that the game installation is defective.
