A game-server connection timeout means your client did not receive the expected response before it stopped waiting. The cause may be an outage, an offline host, an unstable link, a firewall, strict NAT, ISP filtering, or a game-specific port mismatch—not necessarily a broken game installation.

What does a game server connection timeout actually mean?
A timeout is a failure to receive an expected reply within the period allowed by the game or platform. It describes the symptom, not the failed component. The interruption can occur between your game and the platform service, between your device and router, between your router and the Internet, or between your client and a host running a private or dedicated server.
Steam Support treats timeout messages reaching Steam sites as a possible system-wide service problem. Rockstar documents the wording “Timed out locating session,” while Minecraft support describes timeout and unable-to-join cases involving versions, permissions, and network configuration. A browser working normally does not rule out a game connection problem: web traffic can use different destinations, protocols, and ports from a multiplayer session.

What should I check before changing any settings?
Start with facts that can make configuration work unnecessary. A service outage, an offline host, an outdated client, or disabled multiplayer permissions cannot be repaired by opening random router ports.

Check the official status page for the platform or publisher. Steam says that timeout errors when accessing Steam sites can indicate a system-wide issue; if the service itself is unavailable, wait for the incident to clear rather than repeatedly changing your router.
Verify the host is online
For a friend-hosted world, ask the host to launch the world or server and remain connected while you retry. A timeout to one private session does not prove that your Internet connection is broken.
Match game versions and multiplayer eligibility
Minecraft’s guidance includes confirming that both players run the current game version. On consoles, multiplayer may also require the relevant permission settings and an active console multiplayer subscription. Check those requirements for every account involved, not only the person receiving the error.

Try an alternate network
Use a separate Internet connection, such as another trusted network, for one join attempt. Do not change several settings at the same time. Record whether the same server, account, and game version succeed on the alternate link; that comparison helps separate a local-router or ISP issue from a server-side problem.
Bypass the router to isolate its configuration
Steam’s router guidance recommends temporarily connecting the computer directly to the modem, where the service setup allows it. If a direct connection works but the normal router path fails, investigate router compatibility, NAT behavior, or filtering. Restore the normal topology after the test and secure the direct connection according to your modem and ISP instructions.
Restart in a clean order
- Exit the game and its launcher or platform client.

Steam and Rockstar both include router-reset actions in their support workflows. A restart can clear a transient session or stale network state, but it will not fix an outage, an incompatible NAT policy, or a permanently blocked port.
Could a firewall, antivirus, or background application be blocking the game?
Yes. Steam identifies firewalls, security software, bandwidth-heavy applications, and third-party anti-cheat as common sources of connection failures. Check local blocking software after the basic network test and make the smallest temporary change needed to identify the conflict.
Review firewall rules
Open the operating system’s firewall settings and look for rules affecting the game executable, launcher, platform client, or dedicated-server process. Confirm that the rule applies to the network profile you are actually using. If you modify a rule for diagnosis, restart the Steam client afterward, as Steam specifically recommends.
Check security suites and anti-cheat components

Pause competing traffic
Stop downloads, cloud synchronization, video uploads, and other bandwidth-heavy applications while reproducing the timeout. This does not change the server’s capacity, but it removes local congestion and makes the result easier to interpret.

NAT determines how your router maps private devices to a public Internet address and whether unsolicited traffic can return to the correct device. Open or moderate NAT is generally more compatible with peer connections than strict NAT. Rockstar states that a more open NAT type has fewer conflicts with other player systems and fewer connectivity issues.

Distinguish client-side and host-side ownership
For a friend-hosted game, either endpoint can be responsible. If several players cannot reach the same host, the host’s NAT or router policy is more suspicious than every client’s configuration. If only one player fails while others join normally, begin with that player’s link, firewall, and NAT.
Which ports should I open for a game server?
There is no universal game-server port list. Use only the ports documented by the game or platform, record whether each rule is TCP or UDP, and note whether the traffic is inbound or outbound before changing a router or firewall.

Why protocol and direction matter
A rule for TCP does not automatically permit UDP. Likewise, an outbound client rule does not create an inbound listener for a server. Write down the port number, protocol, local device, and traffic direction from the official game documentation before creating a rule.

Do not forward unrelated ports
Opening a broad range or copying a list from a different game can increase exposure without helping the timeout. Remove temporary diagnostic rules that are not required by the final configuration, and keep the server software updated.
Should I change DNS to fix a timeout?
DNS is a targeted check, not a universal timeout cure. Minecraft warns that custom DNS and port configurations can interfere with multiplayer, while Rockstar publishes DNS-change instructions for particular Xbox workflows.
If the game or platform documentation specifically directs a DNS change, follow that procedure and record the previous value so you can restore it. If no official instruction exists, leave DNS unchanged while you investigate service status, host availability, link stability, firewall rules, NAT, and documented ports. A DNS change cannot repair an offline host or an unpowered server.

Rockstar uses “Timed out locating session” for a session-discovery failure. Apply the general sequence, but pay particular attention to the service status, the host’s online state, NAT compatibility, and the platform-specific ports Rockstar documents.
- Check Rockstar’s service status and confirm the session host is online.
- Verify that every participant is on the current game version and has the required multiplayer access.
- Retry over Ethernet or an alternate network to identify a local-link problem.
- Restart the modem, router, game, and platform client.
