“Lag” is not one problem. High ping and rubberbanding are network failures; low or uneven frames are rendering problems; delayed controls are input or display latency. Identify which symptom you have before changing settings, then use the matching fix: verify hardware requirements, establish a clean software baseline, reduce the most expensive graphics options, update drivers and GPU selection, control heat and power, and test the network separately.

This order prevents wasted upgrades. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable can stabilize a weak local connection but cannot raise GPU-limited FPS, while a new graphics card will not cure a distant server or packet loss. The guide below gives measurable checks and recovery steps for PC and console players.

What kind of gaming lag are you experiencing?

Start by labeling the symptom as network lag, low FPS or stutter, or input/display latency. The same game can suffer from more than one at once, but each category has a different test and remedy.

Label What you notice What to measure First place to look
Network lag Your character snaps backward (rubberbanding), actions arrive late, other players teleport, or you disconnect. Ping, packet loss and server status. Your connection, router, local congestion and the game server.
Low FPS or stutter Motion is visibly slow or uneven, camera pans hitch, or the game becomes worse when scenes get busy. Average FPS and frame-time consistency. Requirements, GPU/CPU load, graphics settings, drivers, background tasks and temperatures.
Input/display latency A mouse, controller or keyboard action appears on screen after a noticeable pause even though FPS looks acceptable. Refresh rate, frame queueing and the delay from graphics device to display. Latency settings, VSync behavior, display mode, refresh rate and GPU driver options.

EA describes rubberbanding as a character running forward and then being snapped back, a pattern that normally points to the connection rather than graphics hardware. RuneScape defines ping as the round-trip time for a packet to a server and treats high ping as a connection issue. Steam Support notes that reduced FPS can have many hardware and software causes, so a single “lag fix” cannot cover all three categories.

Why is my game lagging or stuttering?

On a PC, recurring causes include a system near or below the game’s requirements, demanding resolution or lighting settings, an outdated or conflicting driver, the game using an integrated GPU instead of a discrete one, background programs consuming memory, and thermal throttling. Multiplayer adds ping, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, bandwidth contention and server distance or overload. A patch can also introduce a game-specific fault.

“Poor or reduced FPS can be caused by any number of factors,” Steam Support explains, which is why changing ten settings at once makes diagnosis harder. Change one or two variables, record what happened, and keep the setting if the frame-time or network metric improves without an unacceptable side effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I check whether my PC can run the game?

Compare the game’s published minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, RAM, operating-system and storage requirements with your computer before tuning. Minimum requirements describe a launchable baseline, not a promise of high, stable FPS or maximum settings; both Steam and EA warn that merely meeting them does not guarantee a smooth experience.

Record your hardware

  • In Windows, open Settings > System > About to note the processor and installed memory.
  • Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display to record the display resolution and refresh rate.
  • Use Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) while the game is running to observe CPU, GPU, memory and disk activity. A GPU pinned near full use while FPS is low usually indicates a rendering limit; memory pressure or sustained disk activity can indicate swapping or background work.
  • On a laptop, identify whether the game is running on integrated graphics or the discrete GPU; the Windows Graphics settings in the next section can change that assignment.

If the computer is below the minimum requirement, software tuning may make the game playable but cannot create missing CPU or GPU capacity. If it is close to the recommended level, expect to balance image quality and frame rate rather than assume the recommended specification equals a locked FPS target.

How do I establish a clean baseline before changing settings?

A clean baseline removes easy-to-miss software and bandwidth interference so later tests mean something.

  1. Close unnecessary programs. Quit browsers with many tabs, launchers, recording tools and overlays that you do not need for the test. Steam identifies background processes as a common FPS drain, and insufficient memory can force disk swapping.
  2. Stop downloads and synchronization. Pause game updates, cloud drives, video streams and large file transfers. They can consume bandwidth during a network test and compete for disk or CPU time during an FPS test.
  3. Trim startup load. In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable items you recognize as unnecessary, then restart Windows. New World also recommends reducing startup applications and checking for malware when performance is inexplicably poor.
  4. Restart and reproduce one scene. Use the same map, route or training area for each comparison. Note FPS, whether stutter occurs at regular intervals, and how long the session runs before performance changes.
  5. Keep an evidence log. Write down the setting changed, the old and new value, FPS or frame-time behavior, ping and packet loss. Revert a change that produces no measurable benefit or causes tearing, visual artifacts or instability.

Which graphics settings should I lower first to fix low FPS?

Lower resolution first when the GPU is the limit, then target effects that consume substantial rendering time. MSI identifies resolution, shadows, global illumination, reflections and ray tracing as settings that can materially affect FPS. Test only one or two at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting Why it costs performance Practical first test Typical trade-off
Resolution or render scale Fewer pixels require less GPU work. Drop one step, or reduce render scale while keeping the display output resolution. Sharper image becomes softer; this is often the fastest way to test a GPU limit.
Shadows Dynamic lights must render additional geometry and shadow maps. Move from Ultra/High to Medium before changing textures. Less detailed or shorter shadows.
Global illumination Indirect lighting calculations are expensive, especially in complex scenes. Reduce one tier and retest an area with interiors or many light sources. Lighting looks flatter or less physically accurate.
Reflections Mirrors, water and glossy surfaces may require extra scene rendering. Lower reflections or screen-space reflection quality. Reflected objects become less complete or detailed.
Ray tracing Ray calculations add a large GPU workload. Turn it off temporarily to establish a non-ray-traced baseline. Less realistic reflections, shadows or lighting.
HDR and post-processing Additional tone mapping and effects add work and can expose display-processing delay. Disable HDR or reduce effects briefly as a diagnostic. Different brightness, contrast or cinematic effects.
View distance and model detail More distant geometry and higher-detail models increase draw calls and memory use. Lower view or model detail one step in large outdoor scenes. Objects appear later or with simpler meshes.

Textures are not always the first setting to lower: if the GPU has enough video memory, reducing texture quality may change image detail without materially improving FPS. Conversely, if video memory is full and the game is streaming assets from storage, lowering textures can reduce hitching. Use the game’s performance overlay or Task Manager to see which limit is actually present.

How do I update drivers and make Windows use the right GPU?

Install current Windows updates and the latest driver for your graphics hardware. If a driver update followed by crashes or severe stutter, reinstall it using the manufacturer’s installer and choose its clean-install option when offered; EA recommends a clean install or reinstall when old and new driver components conflict.

Assign a laptop game to the high-performance GPU

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Use the app list or Browse to add the game’s executable.
  3. Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and press Save.
  4. Close and relaunch the game, then check Task Manager to confirm the discrete GPU is active.

This setting matters when Windows has launched a demanding game on integrated graphics. It increases power use and heat, so use the plugged-in performance profile on a laptop and keep vents clear.

Why does FPS drop after several minutes?

A game that starts smoothly and degrades as the session continues may be hitting a heat or power limit. Dell explains that a hot CPU or GPU can trigger thermal throttling, automatically reducing clock speed to prevent damage; PUBG also lists overheating and cooling problems among causes of lag.

Check cooling safely

  • Place the PC or laptop on a hard, unobstructed surface. Do not cover intake or exhaust vents.
  • Inspect fans and vents for dust. Power down before cleaning and follow the device manufacturer’s method; do not force a spinning fan with compressed air.
  • Watch temperatures and clock speeds with the system’s hardware monitor while reproducing the slowdown. A temperature rise followed by lower clocks and FPS supports a thermal diagnosis.
  • Use the correct charger and a performance power plan when gaming on a laptop. Battery-saving modes can cap CPU or GPU performance.
  • If temperatures remain abnormal after cleaning, have the cooling system serviced rather than repeatedly running the component at a throttle point.

Do not treat heat by raising fan or voltage settings blindly. A cooler, stable clock is more useful than a short benchmark spike, and aggressive overclocking can add instability to an already difficult diagnosis.

How do I stop high ping, packet loss and rubberbanding?

When the symptom is teleporting, delayed server responses or rubberbanding, test the network instead of lowering graphics quality. Check the game’s displayed ping and packet-loss indicator, then separate local-link problems from server-side problems.

  1. Check the game server. Look for the publisher’s status page or an in-game outage notice. If every player is affected, local hardware changes will not solve a server incident.
  2. Stop competing traffic. Pause downloads, streams, cloud backups and other devices using the connection. Re-test in the same match or server region.
  3. Compare connection types. Test Ethernet if you normally use Wi-Fi. Dell and MSI both describe wired networking as more stable and typically lower-latency for online games.
  4. Restart networking equipment. Reboot the router and modem according to the ISP’s instructions, then test again. A restart can clear a transient state but will not fix persistent line quality or routing problems.
  5. Compare regions and times. A nearer server may reduce round-trip time; a crowded evening pattern can indicate congestion rather than a graphics fault.
  6. Watch packet loss, not only ping. A low average ping with dropped packets can still produce freezes and rubberbanding. Record both values during the incident.

Would a Cat 6 Ethernet cable help?

A Cat 6 Ethernet cable for gaming is the most direct physical accessory for replacing an unreliable Wi-Fi link with a wired connection. It can improve local-link stability and reduce wireless interference, but it cannot repair an overloaded game server, a bad ISP route, packet loss beyond your home, or low FPS caused by the GPU. Use it as a network test first: if packet loss disappears over Ethernet, investigate Wi-Fi placement, interference or router settings before buying other hardware.

How do I reduce input lag when FPS is acceptable?

Input latency is a separate path from network delay and average FPS. Tune the frame queue, display mode and refresh rate, then test the result in a repeatable practice area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enable NVIDIA Reflex when supported. NVIDIA recommends turning Reflex Low Latency Mode on in games that offer it. Use the game’s own Reflex switch rather than forcing unrelated driver overrides.
  2. Turn on Windows Game Mode. Open Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and enable it. It prioritizes game-related work, although the measurable result varies by system.
  3. Test exclusive fullscreen. Where a game supports true exclusive fullscreen, compare it with borderless mode. Fewer layers between the game and display can change latency, but Windows 11’s “Optimizations for windowed games” can improve DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed and borderless modes, so do not assume one mode always wins.
  4. Set the display to its maximum refresh rate. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the intended monitor and choose its highest stable refresh rate. Confirm the in-game display setting matches.
  5. Test VSync instead of prescribing it. VSync can remove tearing but may add queued input delay or reduce frame rate when the system cannot sustain the display cadence. GOG notes that results differ by game and system; compare on and off while watching tearing, responsiveness and frame-time consistency.

Lowering graphics settings can reduce render time and therefore latency, but only if rendering is the bottleneck. If the display itself processes images slowly, use its low-latency or game mode and connect it directly rather than through unnecessary video-processing equipment.

What should I do if lag started after a patch or driver update?

A sudden change after an update points to a compatibility or configuration issue before it points to aging hardware.

  1. Read the publisher’s known-issues and maintenance notices for the exact game version.
  2. Verify or repair files where the platform supports it. On Steam, open the game’s Properties > Installed Files page and choose Verify integrity of game files.
  3. Reset GPU control-panel overrides to defaults. A forced frame limiter, sharpening filter, unusual sync mode or per-game profile can conflict with a new build.
  4. Roll back a recently installed graphics driver only if the manufacturer provides a supported previous package and the problem clearly began with that driver. Keep a restore point or installer so you can return to a known state.
  5. Remove temporary shader-cache or configuration files only when the game’s support instructions explain the location and recovery method; deleting saves or custom settings can create a second problem.

For a console, restart the game, check the platform and game-server status, power-cycle the console, and inspect the direct HDMI connection to the display. Avoid repeatedly changing TV picture modes while diagnosing; record one known-good mode and compare from there.

Should I buy a dedicated GPU or other hardware?

Upgrade only after the capability check and software baseline show a repeatable rendering limit. A dedicated GPU is justified when the current graphics processor is below or near the game’s requirements, GPU utilization remains high at reduced background load, and lowering resolution or effects produces a predictable FPS improvement that still falls short of your target. It will not fix high ping, packet loss, server overload or a display that adds latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Targets Cost and reversibility Possible side effects
Lower resolution, shadows or ray tracing GPU-limited FPS and frame-time spikes. No purchase; fully reversible in the game menu. Image-quality loss.
Driver reinstall or correct GPU assignment Wrong adapter, conflicting software and some stutter. No purchase; reversible by restoring the prior driver or app setting. Temporary shader compilation or changed control-panel defaults.
Cooling and power correction Performance that decays as temperatures rise. Usually low cost; cleaning is reversible, hardware service is not. More fan noise; unsafe cleaning can damage components.
Wired Ethernet Wi-Fi interference and local packet loss. Low-to-moderate accessory cost; easy to remove. Cable routing limits; no benefit for distant server or GPU problems.
Dedicated GPU upgrade Persistent rendering limits below the desired quality or FPS. Highest cost; installation and compatibility checks required. More power, heat, case space and possible CPU bottleneck.

Check the power supply, case clearance, motherboard slot and CPU balance before installing a card. If the game is CPU-limited, a faster GPU may leave FPS nearly unchanged; use the same scene and utilization readings to confirm which component is saturated.

Which fix matches each symptom?

Symptom Confirm with Next action Do not start with
Rubberbanding or teleporting High ping or packet loss, often with normal local FPS. Stop traffic, test Ethernet, check server status and region. Lowering shadows or buying a GPU.
Slow motion in busy scenes FPS falls with GPU or CPU load; ping remains normal. Lower resolution and costly effects, then update drivers. Rebooting the router.
Hitches every few seconds Frame-time spikes, memory pressure, disk activity or background tasks. Close startup/background programs, check memory and storage activity, verify files. Assuming average FPS tells the whole story.
Good FPS but delayed controls High frame rate with noticeable display or control delay. Test Reflex, Game Mode, fullscreen, refresh rate and VSync. Changing internet service without checking input settings.
Performance worsens after minutes Temperature rises while clocks and FPS fall. Clear vents, verify power mode and investigate thermal throttling. Overclocking.
Problem began after an update Timing matches a patch or driver change. Check known issues, verify files and reset profiles. Replacing hardware immediately.

What is the shortest safe troubleshooting sequence?

  1. Label the symptom: network, rendering or input/display.
  2. Compare your hardware with minimum and recommended requirements.
  3. Restart with unnecessary programs, downloads and startup items removed.
  4. Change one or two expensive graphics settings and retest the same scene.
  5. Update or clean-install the graphics driver; assign the game to High performance on a hybrid-GPU laptop.
  6. Check temperatures, vents, clocks and the active power mode.
  7. For multiplayer symptoms, record ping and packet loss, test Ethernet and check server status.
  8. For delayed controls, test Reflex, Game Mode, fullscreen, refresh rate and VSync individually.
  9. If the issue follows an update, verify files and reset driver profiles before considering hardware replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can high ping make my FPS counter drop?

Usually no: ping measures packet travel to the server, while FPS measures local rendering. Network stalls can make a game appear frozen or cause delayed world updates, and a poorly optimized client may hitch while processing them, so record both metrics instead of treating one as proof of the other.

Why does my game stutter even when the average FPS is high?

Average FPS can hide brief frame-time spikes. Background tasks, shader compilation, memory pressure, asset streaming or thermal clock changes may create those spikes; compare frame-time consistency and disk or memory activity, not just the displayed average.

Is borderless windowed mode always slower than fullscreen?

No. The result depends on the game, Windows version and display path. Windows 11 includes optimizations for DirectX 10 and 11 games in windowed and borderless modes, so test both modes on the same scene rather than relying on a universal rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will reinstalling the whole game fix lag?

A reinstall can help when files are corrupted and the platform offers no repair option, but it will not correct high ping, insufficient hardware, overheating or a bad driver profile. Verify or repair files first and preserve saves and configuration files before deleting anything.

Why is my laptop still slow after I choose High performance?

Confirm that the game was fully closed and relaunched, then check Task Manager to see which GPU is active. If the discrete GPU is selected but clocks fall as temperatures rise, power or thermal limits—not adapter selection—are likely controlling performance.
