Ghosting, shimmering, and blur usually come from too little reconstruction detail, excessive sharpening, bad motion data, incorrect temporal jitter, or an upscaler integration problem. Start by reproducing the artifact in a repeatable scene, move DLSS or FSR toward Quality or Native AA, turn sharpening down, and test with frame generation disabled. If trails or flicker remain after a supported game or runtime update, the renderer may be supplying incorrect motion vectors, depth, exposure, mip-map bias, or post-processing order—settings an end user cannot repair.
Why do DLSS and FSR create ghosting, shimmering, or blur?
DLSS and FSR reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render and information from previous frames. That temporal process needs accurate motion vectors, camera jitter, depth, exposure, and texture mip-map decisions. When any of those inputs is missing or wrong, the algorithm can blend old information into a moving object, reject useful history, or alternate between incompatible samples.

Performance and Ultra Performance modes therefore give the temporal filter less information than Quality or Native AA. A sharpening pass can make edges look crisper, but it cannot restore detail or motion data that was never rendered. Frame generation is a separate stage: it can make an existing upscale defect more visible because the generated frames inherit the input image’s errors.
What should I do first to isolate the artifact?
Use a controlled baseline before changing several options at once. The goal is to determine whether the defect comes from reconstruction, sharpening, frame generation, or the display path.

- Choose a repeatable scene. Use the same location, camera angle, resolution, and camera movement each time. A foliage-lined path, fence, power line, or moving vehicle makes temporal errors easy to compare.
- Temporarily disable film grain, depth of field, and motion blur. These effects can resemble smearing or soften fine detail, masking the actual upscaler behavior.
- Record your baseline. Note the game version, GPU, graphics driver, output resolution, DLSS or FSR mode, sharpening value, VSync/VRR state, and whether frame generation is enabled. A short capture of the same camera sweep is more useful than memory.
- Change one variable at a time. Compare the exact same movement after each change. If several settings change together, you cannot identify which one removed or introduced the artifact.
Do not judge a single still screenshot only. Ghosting and shimmer are temporal defects, so a slow camera pan and a moving character reveal them better than a static menu scene.
How do I reduce blur from DLSS or FSR?
Raise the reconstruction quality first, then remove extra sharpening variables and verify that the display is showing the game’s native output resolution.
Move from Performance toward Quality or Native AA
In the game’s upscaling menu, move DLSS or FSR from Performance or Ultra Performance toward Quality. AMD’s FSR options include Native AA, Quality, Balanced, Performance, and an optional Ultra Performance mode. Native AA renders at the output resolution and uses the reconstruction technology as an anti-aliasing pass, so it is a useful clarity reference when your GPU has headroom.
Quality modes retain more source detail for temporal reconstruction. The trade-off is GPU load: a clearer image may reduce frame rate. Compare static texture detail, distant geometry, and motion stability rather than selecting a mode from its name alone.
Turn sharpening down while diagnosing
Set the game’s sharpening slider low or off and repeat the same camera move. Sharpening changes edge contrast; high values can create halos, ringing, and unstable high-frequency detail that looks like shimmer. AMD describes sharpening as an optional pass and recommends exposing a user-adjustable slider.
Also check for a second sharpening or image-scaling filter in the graphics driver. NVIDIA documents driver-level Image Scaling and sharpening controls. Disable that layer while testing so the game’s reconstruction and the driver’s filter are not stacked. Once the base image is stable, add a small amount of sharpening only if it improves clarity without halos or crawling edges.

Confirm that the display and game are using the monitor’s native resolution. A non-native desktop or output mode can add scaling softness that resembles DLSS or FSR blur. Texture filtering and anti-aliasing choices also alter perceived edge quality, so record those settings when comparing captures.
If textures remain blurry even at a high-quality mode, the issue may be mip-map selection rather than the upscaler’s nominal quality. NVIDIA’s integration checklist links missing mip-map bias to textures that look blurry, smudgy, or low resolution. That bias is normally supplied by the game’s renderer, not corrected by an end-user slider.

How do I stop ghost trails behind moving objects?
First separate ordinary upscaling from frame generation. Then test whether the game is supplying usable motion vectors and resetting temporal history when the scene changes.
Run one comparison with frame generation off
- Leave DLSS or FSR upscaling enabled at the mode you want to test.
- Turn frame generation off, restart the level or checkpoint if necessary, and repeat the same movement.
- Compare trails behind characters, vehicles, weapons, particles, and transparent effects.
If the trail is present without generated frames, the base upscaler or its integration is responsible. If it appears only, or becomes substantially worse, with frame generation enabled, the interpolator is exposing an error in the input frames. AMD’s FSR 3 integration guidance explicitly warns that upscaling artifacts carry into interpolated frames.

Persistent trails usually mean the temporal reconstruction is receiving incorrect motion information or is accepting old history for too long. NVIDIA states that incorrect motion vectors can cause increased ghosting and other image-quality problems. AMD likewise identifies incorrect or missing motion vectors as a cause of ghosting.
There is no universal consumer toggle that repairs a vector generated incorrectly by the game. You can reduce how visible the defect is by choosing Quality or Native AA, lowering sharpening, and disabling frame generation, but a trail that survives those tests should be reported to the game’s developer with your capture and settings.
Why do foliage, wires, fences, and distant geometry shimmer?
Thin, alpha-tested, or sub-pixel details are difficult because their coverage changes rapidly as the camera moves. Test a higher-quality reconstruction mode or Native AA, reduce sharpening, and verify temporal jitter.
Use a higher-quality reference
Compare the same foliage or wire at Performance, Quality, and—if available—Native AA. If shimmer decreases as more source detail is retained, the lower mode is undersampling the detail rather than the display failing. Keep the mode that meets your frame-rate target while preserving stable edges.
Why jitter matters
Temporal upscalers deliberately shift sample positions between frames. NVIDIA’s checklist says missing or incorrect jitter can produce poor anti-aliasing and increased flickering. AMD’s FSR 3 integration overview likewise requires correct jittering. An incorrect jitter scale or sequence can make fine geometry alternate between samples instead of converging.
Users can test this only indirectly: compare quality modes, disable additional sharpening, and check whether a game patch changes the behavior. Developers must verify that the jitter value and scale passed to the upscaler match the render resolution and SDK contract.

Separate shimmer from display artifacts
Capture the game with a recording tool or inspect the same frame on another display. If the pattern moves with the rendered image, it is likely a reconstruction or post-process issue. If you see horizontal breakup, scanline-like bands, or motion that changes with refresh synchronization, investigate VSync, VRR, cable, and signal stability separately.
What settings should I compare in a DLSS-versus-FSR test?
Use identical conditions and judge more than average frame rate. The useful comparison is the behavior of each option with and without frame generation at the same output resolution.
Recommended Free Tools
| Comparison axis | What to observe | How to record it |
|---|---|---|
| Moving-object stability | Trails, double edges, or breakup behind characters and vehicles | Use the same movement and note whether frame generation is on |
| Fine-detail shimmer | Foliage, wires, fences, particles, and distant geometry during a pan | Capture a slow, repeatable camera sweep |
| Static-scene clarity | Texture definition, thin geometry, and edge halos while standing still | Inspect at the native output resolution with sharpening documented |
| GPU load and frame rate | The performance cost of each quality mode | Record the same scene, resolution, and graphics settings |
| Frame-generation behavior | Whether an existing upscale defect becomes more visible | Run one pass with generation disabled and one with it enabled |
Keep the exact game version, driver, GPU, output resolution, quality mode, sharpening value, and synchronization settings with each result. A comparison made after a patch or driver change is a new test, not a continuation of the old one.
Could frame generation be the real cause?
Frame generation can amplify a reconstruction error, but it does not automatically mean the generator is defective. The generated frame starts with the upscaled image and motion information supplied by the game.
AMD’s FSR 3 documentation treats upscaling and frame generation as separate components and warns that an upscaling artifact carries into interpolated frames. The clean diagnostic is therefore to keep the upscaler fixed, disable generation, and compare the same camera movement. If ghosting, shimmer, or blur remains, fix the base image first.
When generation is enabled, also check the game’s latency and synchronization options. A very high generated frame rate can make pacing or latency feel different even when image quality is unchanged; that is a separate performance decision from reconstruction quality.

Which renderer problems require a game update?
Some defects are integration bugs rather than user settings. DLSS and FSR need the renderer to provide correctly formatted data in the correct order.
Motion-vector coverage
Vectors must cover the camera, skinned and deformable meshes, foliage, particles, transparent or alpha-tested elements, and other moving objects. Missing coverage leaves the temporal algorithm unable to explain movement, producing trails or stale detail.

Jitter and render-resolution units
The renderer must pass the correct jitter value, scale, and units for the current render and output resolutions. A mismatch can cause flicker, unstable edges, or anti-aliasing that never converges.
Temporal-history resets
Camera cuts, teleports, large discontinuities, and other history-invalidating events require a reset. Reusing history from the previous view can smear an entire scene or leave a bright trail after a cut.

Depth, exposure, and post-process order
NVIDIA requires DLSS to run close to the start of post-processing and warns that improper exposure can increase ghosting, flickering, and other image-quality problems. AMD’s FSR 3 overview similarly requires correct post-process placement, depth, and exposure handling, plus reactive and transparency/composition masks where applicable.
Mip-map bias and sampling
Correct sampler mip-bias helps textures retain the detail expected by the reconstruction pass. Missing bias can make textures appear smudged even when geometric edges look acceptable. This is an engine-side parameter, so changing texture quality in the menu may not cure it.
These checks are for developers and support teams. Players should attach a reproducible capture, system details, and the frame-generation comparison to a bug report rather than attempting to edit runtime files blindly.
How do I distinguish an upscaler defect from a display problem?
Use a short decision sequence so display synchronization issues are not mislabeled as DLSS or FSR failures.
- Rendered trails or shimmer: the artifact follows objects or fine geometry in a capture; test quality mode, sharpening, jitter, and frame generation.
- Global softness: the whole image is soft, including static textures; verify native output resolution, reconstruction mode, mip-map behavior, and stacked scaling.
- Tearing: a horizontal split appears during movement; inspect VSync and VRR settings.
- Scanline-like breakup or intermittent signal loss: test the cable, display input, refresh rate, and signal path.
AMD’s Radeon guidance explains that VSync controls synchronization and that texture filtering and anti-aliasing settings change softness and edge quality. These settings can alter what you perceive, but they cannot repair incorrect temporal inputs from the renderer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the safest update path for DLSS or FSR?
Apply the game’s official patch first, then use only a runtime update path supported by the game and your GPU driver. Unofficial DLL replacement can change behavior without matching the game’s integration, so it is a poor diagnostic control.

NVIDIA’s January 30, 2025 release notes describe its latest DLSS Super Resolution model, Transformer Preset K, as intended to improve temporal stability, reduce ghosting, and enhance motion detail. Whether you can use that model depends on the game, driver, and GPU; a release note does not guarantee that every title exposes the option.
- Write down the current game build, driver version, GPU, and DLSS/FSR runtime shown by the game.
- Install the developer’s official game update and restart the title.
- Use the supported driver and runtime path for your hardware.
- Repeat the baseline scene with the same resolution, mode, sharpening, and frame-generation state.
- Keep the before-and-after captures so you can identify whether the update changed temporal stability or only frame rate.
When should I report the problem to the developer?
Report it when the artifact is reproducible, remains at Quality or Native AA with sharpening reduced, and survives a frame-generation-off comparison and supported updates. Include a video or sequence of screenshots, the exact scene and camera movement, and your full settings record.
- Game title and exact build or patch number
- GPU, driver version, operating system, and display resolution
- DLSS or FSR mode, sharpening value, anti-aliasing and texture-filtering settings
- Frame generation, VSync, and VRR state
- Whether film grain, depth of field, and motion blur were disabled for the test
- A comparison showing the same movement with frame generation enabled and disabled
Describe the symptom precisely: “trail behind the character,” “flicker on wires during a pan,” “static textures remain smeared,” or “only generated frames show the defect.” That language helps a developer investigate motion vectors, jitter, masks, history resets, mip-bias, exposure, and post-process placement instead of treating the report as a generic performance complaint.
What should I remember when tuning DLSS or FSR?
- Quality mode controls how much source detail temporal reconstruction receives.
- Sharpening changes edge contrast; it cannot recreate missing detail or motion data.
- Incorrect motion vectors and jitter are documented causes of ghosting and flicker.
- Frame generation can expose or amplify an existing upscale artifact.
- A defect that persists after controlled settings tests and supported updates usually requires a game-side integration fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does switching between DLSS and FSR automatically remove ghosting?
No. Both depend on the renderer’s motion vectors, jitter, depth, exposure, and history management. Switching technologies can change how visible the defect is, but a broken integration may affect either option until the game is patched.
Why does the image look worse after I enable a sharpening filter?
Sharpening increases local edge contrast and can turn unstable fine detail into bright halos or crawling pixels. Disable both the in-game and driver-level sharpeners while diagnosing, then add only the smallest amount that improves a stable image.
Can a higher monitor refresh rate fix shimmering foliage?
A higher refresh rate may change how easy the shimmer is to perceive, but it does not correct missing jitter or incorrect temporal inputs. Test the rendered capture and keep synchronization settings consistent before drawing a conclusion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I lower texture quality to hide DLSS or FSR blur?
Usually not. Lower texture quality can remove detail and make the softness harder to diagnose. Verify reconstruction quality, output resolution, sharpening, and mip-map behavior first; texture settings do not repair incorrect temporal data.
