1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle Calendar reminder problems usually come from one of five layers: the individual event, the calendar’s default notifications, browser permissions, operating-system notification controls, or synchronization and duplicate calendar apps. Start with the affected event, then move outward through those layers. This order prevents you from changing a calendar-wide setting when the real cause is a blocked browser alert, a second calendar app, or an account that is not syncing.
The fixes below cover late reminders, repeated alerts, and missing notifications on Google Calendar in a browser, Android, iPhone or iPad, Windows, and macOS. Google does not publish a guaranteed delivery time, so the goal is to restore the complete notification path rather than assume a specific number of seconds or minutes.

Start with the symptom and the layer most likely to cause it
Identify exactly what happened before changing settings. A reminder that appears twice has a different likely cause from one that never appears, and a missing event on a phone points to synchronization rather than a browser permission.
| Symptom | Check first | Then check |
|---|---|---|
| One event is late or silent | The event’s notification list | Browser and operating-system delivery |
| Every new event behaves the same way | Calendar Event notifications and All-day event notifications | Browser, app, and operating-system permissions |
| The same reminder appears twice | Extra notification rows on the event | Another calendar app or account producing the same alert |
| Phone events are missing or unchanged | Selected Google account and calendar sync | Mobile app notification controls |
| Desktop alerts never appear | Desktop notifications and browser permission for calendar.google.com | Windows or macOS notification modes |
Use the narrowest test available: open one affected event, note which account and calendar it belongs to, and compare its notification rows with a new test event. If only one event is wrong, do not begin by changing every calendar default.

Why are my Google Calendar reminders late?
A “late” reminder can mean several things: the event has a notification with an unexpected lead time, the browser or operating system held the alert, the computer was in a mode that hides notifications, or the phone had not synchronized the event update. Google Calendar has no published delivery-time guarantee, so distinguish a wrong schedule from delayed presentation.
Check whether the event itself has the intended lead time
- Open Google Calendar and select the event that produced the late alert.
- Choose the edit option.
- Find the notification section and confirm that a notification exists.
- Check the lead-time value and notification type. A reminder set for a different lead time is working according to its configuration, even if that is not what you expected.
- Save the event, then inspect it again to make sure the change persisted.
An event can have its own notification list instead of simply using the calendar’s current default. Editing the calendar default will not necessarily rewrite an event that was customized earlier.
Check whether the delivery channel was delayed or hidden
For desktop alerts, Google Calendar must remain open in the browser. A closed tab or closed browser cannot display the web notification. The browser also needs permission to notify from calendar.google.com. If that permission was denied, open the browser’s current site-notification settings, find calendar.google.com, and change it to allow notifications. Browser menu labels differ by browser version, so use the site’s permission panel or the browser’s notification settings rather than relying on an old menu name.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Even an allowed browser can be prevented from showing an alert by the operating system. Check whether Windows Focus Assist, full-screen mode, screen sharing, or gaming is suppressing or hiding notifications. On macOS, inspect Notification Center and any display-mirroring or presentation settings that alter alert behavior. These controls can make an on-time Calendar notification look late because it becomes visible only after the suppressing mode ends.
Why does Google Calendar notify me twice?
Two alerts usually mean two notification sources, not a mysterious duplicate generated by one reminder. Check the event first, then look for another calendar application connected to the same Google account.
Remove extra notification rows from the event
- Open the event and choose edit.
- Review every notification row, including different types such as a pop-up, browser notification, or email when those are available in your account.
- Keep the one reminder and lead time you actually want.
- Remove any additional rows that repeat the same alert.
- Save and reopen the event to verify that only the intended notification remains.
Multiple rows are useful when you deliberately want, for example, an earlier warning and a second warning shortly before an appointment. They are a problem when an old row was left in place after a new one was added.

Check for a second calendar app
A phone’s built-in calendar or another calendar application can be connected to the same account and independently alert for the same event. In that app, turn off its notifications or remove the account from the app if you want Google Calendar to be the only reminder source. Keep one app responsible for alerts unless you intentionally want independent reminders.

Why am I not getting Google Calendar reminders?
Work through the delivery path in order: event, calendar defaults, browser or app permission, operating system, and synchronization. Testing after each layer makes it clear where the failure is.
1. Inspect the affected event
Open the event, edit it, and confirm that at least one notification is present. Choose the desired lead time and notification type, remove unwanted rows, and save. This is the fastest way to determine whether the problem is limited to one customized event.
2. Inspect calendar-wide defaults
- In Google Calendar on the web, open Settings from the gear menu.
- Select the relevant calendar in the calendar settings list.
- Review Event notifications.
- Review All-day event notifications separately.
- Add, change, or remove defaults as needed.
A calendar default applies to new events. An event that already has customized notifications can retain its own list, so compare the event-level settings before assuming the default is being ignored. Repeat this check for each calendar that matters; changing one calendar does not change another.

4. Check operating-system delivery
On a computer, allow notifications for the browser itself in the operating-system settings. On a phone, allow notifications for the Calendar app. Then inspect modes that intentionally suppress alerts.
- Windows: check notification permissions for the browser, then review Focus Assist or its current notification-mode equivalent. Full-screen applications, screen sharing, and gaming modes can hide alerts until the mode ends.
- macOS: check the browser in Notification Center settings and review Focus or presentation-related settings. Display mirroring can change where alerts appear or suppress them while you are presenting.
- Android and iPhone/iPad: confirm that the Calendar app is allowed to send notifications and that a system focus, sleep, driving, or similar mode is not silencing it.
Exact labels vary with operating-system and browser versions. The relevant control is the one that permits the browser or Calendar app to show notifications and the one that prevents a focus or presentation mode from hiding them.
Fix Google Calendar reminders on Android
Android has two separate places to check: the notification settings for each calendar inside Google Calendar and Android’s app-level notification controls.
Check each calendar inside the app
- Open the Google Calendar app.
- Open its settings and select a relevant calendar.
- Review the notification entries for that calendar’s timed events.
- Review all-day event notifications as a separate category.
- Add the missing alert, change its lead time, or remove an unwanted duplicate.
Repeat the process for every calendar you use. Notifications are personal to the signed-in account, so a setting changed for one account does not automatically configure a different account on the same phone.
Check Android’s app notification controls
Open Android Settings, find the Google Calendar app, and verify that notifications are allowed. Check individual notification categories if your Android version provides them; a disabled category can silence one class of Calendar alert while other alerts continue to work. Also review battery, focus, and do-not-disturb controls if the app is permitted to notify but alerts still do not appear.
Changes made on a phone can sync with the notifications you see on a computer because notification settings are personal to your account. After changing a mobile setting, recheck the web calendar if desktop behavior also changed.

Fix Google Calendar reminders on iPhone or iPad
On iPhone and iPad, notification preferences are personal to the signed-in account and can sync with the computer version of Google Calendar. Check both Google Calendar’s calendar-specific settings and Apple’s app-level permission.
- Open Google Calendar and select the account and calendar you want to troubleshoot.
- Review timed-event and all-day-event notification settings for that calendar.
- Add or correct the event notification, or remove an extra row if the alert repeats.
- Open iOS or iPadOS Settings, select Notifications, choose Google Calendar, and allow notifications.
- Review Focus, Scheduled Summary, and other system modes that may delay or hide delivery.
If you use more than one Google account, repeat the account and calendar check. Selecting the wrong account can make a correctly configured event appear to have no reminder.
What to do when events are missing or stale on mobile
A reminder cannot fire for an event that has not reached the phone. If an event is missing, an edit has not appeared, or the old reminder remains after a change, verify synchronization before changing notification settings again.
Confirm the account and calendar selection
- Open the event on the computer and note the Google account and calendar that own it.
- On the phone, switch to that same account.
- Make sure that calendar is selected for display and synchronization.
- Refresh the Calendar app and check whether the event and its latest notification settings appear.
Google’s synchronization model is account-based: events synchronized on a mobile device should also appear when you use Google Calendar on your computer. If the app still does not show the event, use the app’s sync controls and Google’s sync-troubleshooting guidance rather than repeatedly editing the reminder.
Separate a sync problem from a notification problem
- If the event is absent from the phone, investigate account selection and sync first.
- If the event is present but silent, investigate the event notification, app permission, and system notification mode.
- If the event appears twice, investigate extra notification rows and another calendar app.
- If the event appears after leaving a focus or full-screen mode, investigate operating-system suppression.
Calendar defaults, event overrides, and account boundaries
Google Calendar has several boundaries that are easy to confuse:
- Event level: the notification rows saved on one event.
- Calendar level: defaults for new timed events and all-day events in one calendar.
- Account level: notification preferences belong to the signed-in account, whether it is personal, work, or school.
- Device level: browser, app, and operating-system permissions determine whether an allowed alert is displayed on that device.
When troubleshooting, write down the account, calendar name, device, and symptom. Then change only the setting at the failing boundary. This avoids accidentally adding a reminder to every new event when one existing event was customized, or diagnosing a web permission when the phone is displaying a stale copy of the calendar.

A complete troubleshooting sequence
Use this sequence when the cause is not obvious. Stop as soon as the symptom is resolved; later steps are for a failure that remains.
- Record the case: note the event, account, calendar, device, and whether the alert was missing, late, or duplicated.
- Inspect the event: verify a notification exists, confirm the lead time, and remove unintended rows.
- Inspect calendar defaults: check Event notifications and All-day event notifications for that calendar.
- Test the desktop path: enable Desktop notifications, allow calendar.google.com in the browser, and keep the calendar open.
- Test the device path: allow the browser or Calendar app in the operating system and disable or account for Focus, full-screen, gaming, screen-sharing, mirroring, or similar modes.
- Check mobile account scope: repeat the notification review for each signed-in account and each relevant calendar.
- Remove competing sources: disable alerts in another calendar app or remove duplicate calendar entries if you want one reminder source.
- Verify sync: confirm that the intended account and calendar are synchronized and that the phone has the current event.
- Run a controlled test: create a temporary event, leave the browser open if testing desktop delivery, and observe whether the intended single alert appears.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Changing a default to fix an existing customized event
Defaults primarily govern new events. Open the affected event and edit its own notification list first.
Allowing the site but blocking the browser
The site permission and the operating-system permission are separate. Both the calendar.google.com site and the browser application must be allowed to notify.
Recommended Free Tools
Testing desktop alerts with the browser closed
Web desktop notifications require Google Calendar to remain open in the browser. Test with the calendar open before investigating unrelated settings.
Checking only the primary calendar
Every calendar can have its own defaults, and every signed-in account has personal notification settings. Repeat the check for shared, work, school, and secondary calendars.
Assuming a missing phone event is a reminder failure
If the event or its update is not synchronized to the phone, notification settings cannot correct the missing data. Confirm account selection and sync first.
Leaving two apps enabled after a migration
When another calendar app remains connected, both apps can alert for one event. Disable one app’s notifications if you want a single source.

- Use one clearly identified calendar for each type of appointment and know which account owns it.
- When creating an important event, inspect its notification rows instead of assuming the calendar default is correct.
- Keep Google Calendar open in the browser when you depend on desktop web alerts.
- After changing phones, browsers, or accounts, verify both app permissions and calendar synchronization.
- Before a presentation, game, screen share, or full-screen session, remember that system modes can hide alerts.
- When an alert repeats, remove the extra source rather than adding another notification to compensate.
These checks address the layers Google Calendar actually uses to deliver reminders: the event’s configuration, calendar defaults, account-specific preferences, browser or app permissions, operating-system visibility, and synchronized event data.
