Google has not published a one-to-one explanation for 0x0070057. Treat it as a symptom, not proof of one specific damaged file or hardware fault. The quickest safe route depends on where Google Earth Pro fails: use the built-in Repair Tool if the program opens, test rendering and imagery settings for a blank or blurry globe, and reinstall from Google if the application will not start or its installation is damaged.
First copy the complete message exactly as shown. Do not silently change 0x0070057 to the different code 0x80070057; the two strings should not be troubleshot as if they were identical.

What does Google Earth error 0x0070057 mean?
There is no published Google definition that maps 0x0070057 to one confirmed cause. A current secondary account describes it as an undocumented symptom, so the point at which Earth fails is more useful than the digits alone. The same message may appear during startup, 3D rendering, imagery loading, saved-place loading, or after an incomplete installation.
That uncertainty changes the order of troubleshooting. Start with reversible tests, observe what changes, and only then use actions that affect saved content or replace the installation. A cache problem, a rendering incompatibility, a network or firewall interruption, and a damaged installation can produce very different experiences even when the displayed code looks the same.

Which fix should I try first?
Match the symptom and whether Google Earth Pro opens to the first action below. The table is a decision aid; it is not a claim that the code identifies the underlying fault.
| Failure stage | Typical clue | First supported action | Reversibility and impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Startup | Earth Pro closes, hangs, or shows the code before the globe appears | Open the Repair Tool from Help if the program can be reached; otherwise use the current installer | Repair settings are generally reversible; reinstall replaces program files |
| 3D rendering | Blank globe, black areas, crashes while rotating, or graphics-related behavior | Use Safe Mode, turn off atmosphere, and on Windows test OpenGL and DirectX | These are configuration tests and can be changed back |
| Imagery loading | Globe appears but tiles remain incomplete or blurry | Clear the cache, disable layers, check the status bar, then investigate network, firewall, and graphics drivers | Cache clearing removes temporary data, not saved places |
| Saved places | Failure occurs while My Places is loading | Back up the Repair Tool file before trying Delete My Places | Deleting My Places removes saved content from the active profile; a recovery file is created |
| Installation | Earth Pro cannot launch at all or files appear damaged | Download and install the current Google Earth Pro desktop package | Program files are replaced; protect anything you need before destructive diagnostics |
What should I record before changing settings?
Good notes prevent you from applying a fix for the wrong stage and give Google enough context if you need to report the case.
- Write the complete error exactly, including capitalization, every digit, punctuation, and any text before or after the code.
- Record what happened immediately before the message: launching Earth Pro, opening a saved place, switching views, waiting for imagery, or installing an update.
- Note whether the desktop application opens far enough to show a menu, whether a globe appears, and whether the problem is repeatable.
- Record your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux) and whether the symptom is startup, rendering, imagery, saved-place loading, or installation.
- Take a screenshot if the wording or visual symptom may help distinguish a blank globe from an ordinary slow download.
Keep the original code in your notes. In particular, 0x0070057 is not the same string as the frequently confused 0x80070057.
How do I use the Google Earth Pro Repair Tool?
If Google Earth Pro opens, the Repair Tool is the first supported path. Google’s documentation describes it as the way “to more easily do things like clear your cache or fix startup issues.” Run one test at a time so you can tell which change matters.
- Start Google Earth Pro and open Help > Launch Repair Tool.
- Leave the Repair Tool window open, then close Google Earth Pro as directed by the tool.
- Use the available controls one at a time. After each change, reopen Earth Pro and reproduce the original symptom.
Clear the disk cache
Choose the cache-clearing option and test the same location or action again. Cached imagery and temporary data can become unusable, but clearing the cache is a reversible diagnostic: Earth can download temporary data again. This does not by itself establish that the error was caused by the cache.
Turn on Safe Mode
Enable Safe Mode in the Repair Tool and relaunch Earth Pro. Use it to determine whether normal graphics or display settings are involved. If the symptom disappears, record that result before changing other options; Safe Mode is evidence about the failure path, not a permanent diagnosis.

Turn off atmosphere
Disable the atmosphere effect and test the globe. This is useful when the application opens but rendering is unstable or the display becomes blank during navigation. Restore the setting later if it makes no difference.
Restore default settings
Use the option to restore default settings when a configuration change may be preventing startup or rendering. Because this changes preferences, note any custom settings you may want to recreate. Test before making additional changes.
Switch between OpenGL and DirectX on Windows
On Windows, use the Repair Tool to switch the rendering backend between OpenGL and DirectX, then relaunch and test. Keep a note of which backend was active for each result. There is no universal winner: the useful outcome is identifying whether one mode avoids the blank globe, crash, or display corruption.
Should I use Delete My Places?
Use Delete My Places only when the failure appears while saved places are loading and the reversible tests have not helped. This option removes saved content from the active My Places data so Earth can test whether that content is triggering the crash.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Google says the Repair Tool renames the removed file myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml. That file is the safety net: open it later to recover saved places that you still need. Treat the operation as a diagnostic with data impact, not as routine cache maintenance. If your saved locations matter, confirm that the backup file exists before attempting further cleanup.
How can I fix a blank globe or imagery that will not load?
A rendering failure and an imagery-availability limitation can look similar. Work through the checks below before assuming the error is a graphics-card fault.

Disable layers and overlays
Turn off optional layers or overlays and retry the same view. A problematic overlay can make the globe appear blank or leave the application unstable even when the base map is available. If the base imagery loads with layers disabled, re-enable them individually to identify the trigger.
Read the status bar
Watch the loading indicator at the bottom of the Earth window. Google notes that a status bar at 100% with a blurry image can simply mean that high-resolution imagery does not exist for that location. In that case, waiting longer will not create detail that Google does not provide.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If loading remains incomplete after several minutes, Google identifies internet connectivity, firewall restrictions, or graphics-driver trouble as possible explanations. Check whether the problem affects one location or multiple locations and whether other online functions on the computer work normally.
Retest the Windows rendering backend
For Windows users, return to the Repair Tool and test both OpenGL and DirectX. A change that fixes a blank globe or persistent rendering failure points toward a compatibility issue in the display path, but it does not prove that the graphics hardware is defective.
Update the graphics-card driver when rendering still fails
If the rendering symptom continues after the backend test, update the graphics-card driver through the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Google’s guidance is direct: “If you still have problems, update your graphics card drivers.” Record the driver version and the date of the update so you can undo or report the change if the behavior worsens.
What if Google Earth Pro will not open at all?
The in-application Repair Tool cannot help if you cannot reach Google Earth Pro’s menus. In that case, do not keep repeating display changes you cannot verify. Move to a clean installation from Google’s current Earth download page.

- Choose the package for your operating system. The download page lists desktop downloads for PC, Mac, and Linux.
- Run the installer and allow it to replace damaged or incomplete program files.
- Launch Earth Pro and test the same action that originally produced

How do Windows, Mac, and Linux troubleshooting differ?
The core sequence is the same on all three desktop platforms: preserve the exact message, use the Repair Tool when Earth Pro opens, and reinstall from Google when the installation cannot start. The main documented platform-specific test is the rendering-backend switch.
- Windows: You can switch between OpenGL and DirectX in the Repair Tool and update the graphics-card driver if rendering remains broken.
- Mac: Use the Repair Tool’s cache, Safe Mode, atmosphere, default-settings, and saved-place diagnostics; the OpenGL/DirectX switch is a Windows-specific instruction.
- Linux: Use the same reversible Repair Tool checks when available, then use the current Linux desktop package if the installation is damaged.
Do not infer that a Windows graphics setting exists on macOS or Linux. If a control is absent, continue with the platform-neutral cache, Safe Mode, default-settings, imagery, and reinstall checks.

Report the issue after the relevant Repair Tool tests or a current reinstall still leave the same symptom. In Google Earth, choose Help > Send feedback. Describe the exact code, the failure stage, your operating system, whether Earth Pro opens, and the changes you tested. Attach a screenshot when it clarifies the message or visual failure.
Google’s feedback page says you may optionally allow email follow-up. Include the complete, unedited code so a support reviewer does not mistake 0x0070057 for 0x80070057.

- Record the message and context.
- Clear the cache.
- Test Safe Mode.
- Turn off atmosphere and optional layers.
- Restore default settings.
- On Windows, test OpenGL and DirectX.
- Update the graphics driver for persistent rendering problems.
- Back up the My Places recovery file before using Delete My Places.
- Reinstall from the current Google package when Earth Pro cannot launch or the installation is damaged.
- Send a complete report if the symptom remains.
The sequence separates reversible configuration tests from actions that remove saved content or replace program files. It also keeps the failure stage visible, which is essential because the code itself has no published Google diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 0x0070057 the same as Windows error 0x80070057?
No. The strings contain different digits and should be copied exactly as displayed. Instructions written for 0x80070057 may describe a different Windows condition and are not automatically relevant to Google Earth’s 0x0070057 symptom.
Can Google Earth show a blurry picture even when nothing is broken?
Yes. Google says a 100% status bar with a blurry image can mean that the selected location has no higher-resolution imagery available. That situation is different from loading that remains incomplete because of connectivity, firewall, or graphics-driver trouble.
What if the Repair Tool does not appear?
If you cannot open Google Earth Pro far enough to reach Help, use the current desktop installer instead of trying to apply in-app settings blindly. The official download page provides packages for PC, Mac, and Linux.
Which rendering mode should I keep on Windows?
There is no single mode that is correct for every computer. Test OpenGL and DirectX separately and retain the configuration that avoids your specific blank-globe or rendering symptom, documenting the result for any later driver investigation.
