This sequence separates a Rockstar outage from a problem on your PC, home network, or ISP.
Identify the failure before changing settings
GTA Online can report several different symptoms when it cannot maintain a session. The wording does not prove a single cause, but it tells you what to record before troubleshooting:

Keep notes about when the failure occurs, whether it affects only GTA Online, and which network you used. Those comparisons are more useful than repeatedly applying unrelated fixes.

1. Check whether Rockstar is experiencing an outage
Open Rockstar Games Service Status before changing your PC or router. Rockstar’s PC connection guidance and its unavailable-services guidance both direct players to this check. Look specifically at GTA Online and any platform or authentication components shown on the page.

If the status shows an outage or maintenance
Do not forward ports, replace DNS servers, or disable security software to correct a server-side interruption. Wait until the listed incident or maintenance period has ended, then relaunch the game. Service status is live information and can change after you check it, so recheck it when the error returns.
If the status shows the service is up
Rockstar notes that a service marked as available does not rule out incompatible connection types between players or restrictions in your own network. Move to the local connection checks below rather than assuming the game installation is damaged.
2. Verify internet access and measure the connection
Confirm that the PC can load ordinary websites and that another device on the same network can reach the internet. A complete loss of internet access points to the router, modem, ISP, or PC networking rather than GTA Online itself.

Run a speed test while no large downloads, cloud backups, or video streams are consuming bandwidth. Record both download and upload results, along with whether the test was performed over Wi‑Fi or Ethernet. Meeting the figures does not eliminate other causes: a connection can have adequate throughput and still lose packets or suffer unstable routing.

3. Compare Wi‑Fi with a wired Ethernet connection
Rockstar recommends trying a wired connection when Wi‑Fi users continue to have trouble. Connect the PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, disable Wi‑Fi temporarily, and launch GTA Online again. You do not need a particular cable specification for this diagnostic comparison; the purpose is to remove wireless interference, weak signal strength, and channel congestion from the test.
How to read the result
- Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi fails: investigate wireless signal quality, distance, interference, and router Wi‑Fi settings. Continue using the wired connection as a practical workaround if it is reliable.
- Both connections fail: the cause is more likely to involve service availability, the ISP or router, NAT/firewall behavior, DNS, Windows networking, or software on the PC.
- Neither result is consistent: repeat the comparison at a different time and record whether other devices are heavily using the connection.
4. Restart the router and isolate the ISP connection
Rockstar’s PC connection instructions describe a full router restart rather than a quick press of a reset button. Save any work that depends on the connection, then follow this sequence:
- Unplug the router’s power cable.
- Leave it unplugged for about 10 minutes.
- Reconnect the power and wait for the router to finish starting.
- Confirm that the PC has internet access.
- Relaunch GTA Online and test the same activity that previously failed.
This procedure can clear a transient router state, but it does not repair a damaged configuration or an ISP-side problem. Avoid pressing a recessed factory-reset button unless you intend to reconfigure the entire router.
Use an alternate network as an isolation test
Rockstar’s unavailable-services guidance suggests trying another internet connection, such as a mobile hotspot. Connect the PC to the hotspot, start GTA Online, and compare the result with your normal home connection. A hotspot may consume mobile data or incur carrier charges, so use it only long enough to perform the test.
- Hotspot works, home internet fails: the evidence points toward the home router, its NAT behavior, or the ISP path. Contact the ISP or router manufacturer with the recorded times and tests.
- Hotspot also fails: the problem is less likely to be limited to the home router. Continue with PC, account-service, firewall, and software checks.
5. Review NAT, firewall rules, and GTA Online ports
Rockstar says that firewall restrictions and other network hardware, including a router, can affect NAT behavior. NAT determines how your device’s traffic is translated and how it communicates with other players. A restrictive or conflicting configuration can produce session timeouts even when web browsing works.

Check your router’s NAT, port-forwarding, and firewall sections against its own documentation. If you configure forwarding, target the PC’s current local IP address and make sure that address does not change unexpectedly. Rockstar cautions that opening or forwarding ports can alter NAT behavior; adding unrelated rules or broad ranges can make troubleshooting harder and can expose services unnecessarily.
Windows firewall considerations
Rockstar’s basic PC troubleshooting guidance lists firewall exceptions for Rockstar titles as a possible step. Allow the game and its launcher through the firewall using the existing Windows security interface rather than turning the firewall off globally. If your security product has a separate network shield, review its blocked-event log for the game or launcher.
Do not assume that every timeout requires port forwarding. Test the simpler service, speed, wired, router, and alternate-network checks first, and change one rule at a time so you can undo a change that makes the result worse.
6. Test the DNS settings Rockstar supplies
DNS translates service names into network addresses. Changing DNS will not repair every connection problem, but Rockstar’s PC instructions provide Google Public DNS values as an option to test when ordinary checks do not help.

Windows configuration path
- Open Settings and select Network & internet.
- Open Advanced network settings, then choose More network adapter options (the exact wording can vary by Windows build).
- Right-click the active Ethernet or Wi‑Fi adapter and select Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), open Properties, choose the option to use specific DNS server addresses, and enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
- If you use IPv6, repeat the process for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) with 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844.
- Apply the settings, reconnect the adapter, and test GTA Online.
Record the original automatic setting before changing it. If the result is unchanged or worse, return the adapter to automatic DNS and continue with the Windows reset or software checks. The values are a diagnostic option, not proof that DNS caused the disconnect.
7. Refresh Windows networking with Rockstar’s command sequence
Rockstar’s Winsock guidance, last updated May 16, 2024, documents a reset that clears the Windows Winsock Catalog. Use an account with administrator rights and follow the commands in an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run each command separately, pressing Enter after each one:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /registerdns
netsh winsock reset- Restart the PC after the commands finish.
- Reconnect to the normal network and test GTA Online before changing another setting.
The commands release and renew the IP configuration, clear the DNS cache, register DNS information, and reset Winsock. They can help with a damaged or inconsistent local network stack, but they are not a guaranteed fix and do not correct an outage, ISP fault, or router restriction.

Rockstar’s basic PC troubleshooting article, last updated December 12, 2024, identifies overlays, recording or sharing utilities, drivers, system software, antivirus, anti-malware, and firewall software as possible sources of interference.
Run a controlled software test
- Close nonessential overlays and capture or streaming utilities before launching the game.
- Update Windows, graphics drivers, the game launcher, and other system components through their normal trusted update channels.
- Review antivirus and firewall event logs for blocked Rockstar or GTA Online processes.
- Add a narrow exception for the relevant game or launcher only when your security product supports it and you understand the rule.
- Launch the game and test. Re-enable one closed program at a time to identify a conflict.
Rockstar’s Windows firewall and antivirus guidance, last updated April 7, 2024, warns that disabling protection can expose the computer to risk. Treat any temporary disablement as a short diagnostic step only, disconnect from untrusted networks while testing, do not browse or download with protection disabled, and restore protection immediately afterward. Prefer an explicit exception over leaving antivirus or the firewall turned off.

9. Consider an IP block only when the problem is persistent and unusual
A single disconnect is not evidence of an IP block. Rockstar’s IP-block guidance says it may temporarily block suspicious or malicious traffic to protect accounts and games. It lists a malfunctioning or compromised router or PC and an ISP-assigned shared IP associated with another customer’s harmful traffic as possible explanations.
Checks Rockstar recommends
- Install current operating-system updates.
- Update antivirus and perform a security scan.
- Secure the router’s administrator account with a strong, unique password and current firmware where available.
- Review connected devices and remove equipment you do not recognize.
These steps address the security conditions Rockstar identifies; they do not establish that a block is present. Do not try to evade a suspected block with unverified workarounds. If the restriction continues after the PC and router are secured, preserve the exact error, dates, networks tested, and service-status result when contacting Rockstar Support.
10. Interpret the results as a decision tree

11. A safe order for repeated testing
Use the same game activity after each change—for example, joining a session and remaining online long enough to reproduce the failure. This makes the comparison meaningful.

- Confirm general internet access and measure download and upload speeds.
- Test Ethernet if you normally use Wi‑Fi.
- Restart the router by unplugging it for about 10 minutes.
- Try a mobile hotspot or another connection to isolate the home network.
- Review NAT, firewall behavior, and the five UDP ports Rockstar lists.
- Test the supplied IPv4 and, if applicable, IPv6 DNS values.
- Run the elevated Windows command sequence and restart the PC.
- Check overlays, recording utilities, antivirus, anti-malware, and firewall exceptions.
- Only for persistent unusual failures, investigate router or PC compromise and a possible temporary IP block.
Change one category at a time and keep a short record of the result. That prevents a successful fix from being hidden by several simultaneous changes and gives support staff concrete information if escalation is necessary.
