• User license: associated with the Microsoft account that bought the game. You use this license by signing in with that account.
• Device license: attached automatically to one designated Home console. Other people using that Home console can use games covered by its device license.

Microsoft says these games may be accessed or installed on a reasonable number of consoles, but a game can be played on only one console at a time. The Home-console designation can be changed no more than five times during a rolling one-year period. Those limits matter if you replace a console, move between households, or regularly sign in on friends’ systems.

What “keep it forever” means in practice

A sale price does not create a temporary rental in the way a subscription catalog does. The purchase creates its own entitlement, so you do not have to keep Game Pass active merely because the game was once available through Game Pass. However, access still depends on the account, platform, licensing checks, and the terms that govern the product. Do not describe a digital purchase as an unconditional, transferable copy.

Game Pass access is different from buying the game

Game Pass supplies subscription-based catalog access. Downloading a catalog title does not turn it into a purchase. If the subscription ends or Microsoft removes the game from the catalog, you must reactivate the subscription or buy the game separately to continue playing.

Can you play a sale purchase on Xbox and PC?

Not automatically. Xbox console ownership and Windows PC rights are not interchangeable for every game.

Play Anywhere titles

Only participating digital games carry the Xbox Play Anywhere designation. For an eligible title, one purchase can provide access on compatible Windows devices and Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles. Your progress and achievements follow your gamertag, allowing you to continue on another supported device. The game can still be played on only one device or console at a time.

Look for the Play Anywhere icon on the current Store listing and read the PC minimum requirements. A game that lacks the icon may have a separate PC edition, may not support Windows at all, or may require another purchase. Do not infer PC rights from the fact that the game runs on an Xbox console.

Windows licensing and offline use

Windows games can use licensing behavior that differs from console Home sharing. Microsoft documents default and more restrictive licensing models. If you need a laptop or desktop installation, verify the Windows edition, hardware requirements, Play Anywhere status, controller and save support, and the connection required for the first launch or periodic license renewal.

How Home-console sharing works for a household

The Home-console model is designed to let other people use content licensed to that console. Microsoft’s developer guidance says the purchaser can share access with anyone who signs in to the designated Home console without the purchaser remaining signed in.

On the designated Home console

• Other profiles on that console can use games covered by the device license.
• The purchasing account does not need to stay signed in for those profiles to launch the shared game.
• The arrangement applies to the console designated as Home, not every console where the account has been used.

On another, roaming console

• The purchasing account must sign in to obtain its user, or roaming, license.
• If that account signs out, other profiles on that console lose the roaming license and may be unable to launch the game.
• The same game cannot be played on two consoles simultaneously under the one-console-at-a-time rule.

Changing the Home designation is therefore a household-management decision, not a way to give unlimited simultaneous access to several families. Remember the five-change rolling-year limit before moving the designation between consoles.

Physical discs and the announced disc-to-digital feature

Xbox Wire announced on August 26, 2026 that Xbox Insiders could begin testing a feature on August 31 that grants a digital entitlement from a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc. The announcement said it began with thousands of titles and that more would be added, while warning that not every title would be eligible. It also described Play Anywhere and cloud-gaming benefits where those services support the game.

The announcement’s wording was: “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” That is not the same as saying every disc qualifies.

Conditions that remain attached to the disc

Microsoft’s digital-goods rules add a critical limitation: the limited-access digital license is granted only after a supported disc is inserted into a supported console and successfully claimed or received. You must continue to possess the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require eligibility revalidation and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer have it. Technical and licensing factors can make a title ineligible.

1. Check the exact disc, region, console generation, and title edition against the current eligibility information.
2. Insert the disc into the supported console and complete the claim process shown on screen.

A disc-based claim is not a freely transferable digital copy. If you buy a used disc, confirm that the title is supported and understand that the entitlement remains tied to continued possession of that disc.

Refunds, price drops, and sale timing

Digital refunds

Microsoft’s general support terms say digital goods such as games and add-ons are generally not refundable unless the offer or applicable law makes you eligible.
