Check the storefront and executable before changing any files. The original 1.0 executable, later 1.01 releases, Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, and the Definitive Edition are not interchangeable targets.

Back up your save files and the entire game directory before replacing a DLL, adding an ASI file, downgrading audio assets, or installing a widescreen utility. Keep an untouched copy so you can undo one change at a time.

What are the classic PC system requirements?
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s 2024 minimum specifications list Windows 10 64-bit, a 1 GHz Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon processor, 256 MB of memory, a 64 MB DirectX 9-compatible graphics card, and 4.7 GB of storage. These figures describe the published minimum, not a guarantee that every modern display, driver, overlay, or launcher combination will behave correctly.
What should I check before installing a patch?
Apply the low-risk baseline first. These steps are reversible and often resolve startup failures caused by the operating system, drivers, permissions, or background software rather than the game files.
- Update Windows. Install pending Windows updates, restart, and try the game before adding modifications.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver for your GPU from its manufacturer, reboot, and test at the game’s default display settings.
- Run as administrator. Right-click the game executable, open Properties, select Compatibility, enable Run this program as an administrator, choose Apply, and launch again.
- Disable overlays and recorders. Temporarily turn off Steam, GPU, chat, performance-monitoring, and screen-recording overlays. A clean launch identifies whether an injected overlay is causing the crash.
- Check security software. Review antivirus quarantine and firewall rules for the game executable. Restore only files you recognize and create an allow rule only if your security software identifies the game incorrectly.
- Use an internal drive. Move the installation from removable, network, or cloud-synchronized storage to an internally connected drive. Confirm that your Windows account can read and write the game folder.
- Verify Steam files. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish before launching.
- Repair the launcher only when necessary. If Rockstar Games Launcher itself is corrupt, reinstall the launcher. Perform a complete game reinstall only after the earlier checks fail, and preserve your saves first.
Test after each step. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to tell which action helped and makes rollback harder.
How do I fix GTA: San Andreas having no sound?
The first sound fix is a Windows playback-format change. Rockstar’s documented procedure is to use 44.1 kHz, 16-bit output, then restart Windows before testing the game again.
- Open Control Panel.
- Choose Hardware and Sound, then Sound.
- On the Playback tab, select the device marked as the default device.
- Click Properties, open the Advanced tab, and set Default Format to 44.1 kHz, 16 bit.
- Select Apply, then OK on each dialog.
- Restart Windows and launch the game with headphones or speakers connected to the same default device.
This setting addresses a broad “no sound” or incompatible-format symptom. It does not restore audio files that are absent from a particular installation, and it will not by itself repair a damaged executable.
Why are only radio stations or character voices missing?
Selective missing audio points to release-specific assets or compatibility behavior rather than the Windows output format. Confirm whether music, radio, ambient effects, subtitles, and voices are affected separately.

Check the installed audio assets
PCGamingWiki documents a missing-radio crash and audio path that can occur after downgrading an installation. The remedy listed there is to replace the game’s audio folder with the matching version 1.0 audio set. Use this only when your executable and the audio set are intended to match, and keep the untouched folder as a rollback copy; mixing files from different releases can cause startup or in-game crashes.
Try compatibility settings only for the matching symptom
PCGamingWiki also records Windows 98/Me compatibility mode and older EAX Unified DLL versions as community approaches for modern-system sound issues. They are not universal fixes. Add one change, test a save, and remove it if audio becomes distorted, disappears in another scene, or the game stops launching.
Separate an output-device problem from a game-file problem
- If Windows sounds are missing in other applications, fix the device, volume mixer, cable, or driver first.
- If menus and effects work but radio or voices do not, inspect release-matched audio assets.
- If sound vanishes only after adding a mod, remove the newest DLL or ASI file and retest the untouched installation.

The current SpeedrunSilentPatch page identifies Build 12, dated 18 October 2026, as supporting original PC version 1.0 only. It explicitly excludes Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, and Definitive Edition installations. The build also documents the interior streaming deadlock, multi-monitor crash classes, and a Windows 11 24H2 Skimmer fix.
Install it by extracting its files directly beside gta_sa.exe. Do not leave them inside an extra nested folder; the game must be able to load the files from its executable directory. If the game will not start afterward, remove the added files using your backup and confirm that the executable really is original 1.0.

How do I fix a stretched image, wrong aspect ratio, or bad HUD?
First distinguish a display-scaling problem from a crash. A stretched image, oversized HUD, incorrect field of view, or distorted mirrors is usually a widescreen configuration issue; a black screen during an interior transition is a streaming defect.

How do I install and remove a compatibility patch safely?
Use a controlled, one-change procedure so a failed launch has an obvious cause.
- Exit the game and launcher.
- Copy the save directory and the complete game folder to a separate backup location.
- Record the storefront and executable version.
- Download only the patch build whose support notes name that executable.
- Extract the files directly into the folder containing
gta_sa.exe, unless the patch’s own instructions specify another location. For SpeedrunSilentPatch, an extra subfolder is incorrect. - Launch with overlays disabled and test a new session plus an existing save.
