Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf classic Grand Theft Auto: Vice City looks stretched, has a misplaced HUD, or shows unwanted cutscene borders, use the community-maintained Vice City Widescreen Fix: its documentation says it adds support for modern resolutions and corrects aspect ratio, HUD placement and scaling, field of view, and cutscene borders. First check which PC edition you own. The fix is documented for the classic game; the available sources do not establish that it works with The Definitive Edition.
Check which Vice City edition you have
The classic PC release and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition are separate editions, so do not assume that a fix for one applies to the other. ThirteenAG’s Widescreen Fix documentation is for the classic game. Rockstar’s separate Definitive Edition PC system requirements page does not provide a comparable widescreen procedure.

Fix stretching and widescreen display issues in classic Vice City
The community-maintained ThirteenAG Vice City Widescreen Fix documentation describes support for resolutions including ultrawide and corrections for aspect ratio, HUD positioning and scaling, field of view, and cutscene borders. It is not an official Rockstar patch.
- Find the classic game folder. Locate the folder containing
gta_vc.exe. - Install the fix. Extract the downloaded ZIP into that folder, placing its contents alongside
gta_vc.exe. - Adjust settings if needed. The documentation says you can edit the fix’s configuration file; consult its current instructions for the available options.
- Launch the game and check the result. Verify the image shape, HUD placement, and cutscenes at your display’s resolution.
The maintainer strongly recommends SilentPatch and warns that some mods may conflict with the Widescreen Fix. If a mod conflict occurs, the fix documentation offers a Legacy mode as a fallback. Check the maintainer’s current documentation for compatibility details before changing a modded installation.

Use Rockstar’s troubleshooting only for the problems it addresses
Rockstar’s support article “GTA:VC running slowly on PC”, last updated January 28, 2024, focuses on slow performance and settings problems in classic Vice City; its suggestions are not a replacement for the Widescreen Fix when the image is stretched.
If the game runs slowly or display trouble followed a hardware change
Rockstar says old sound and video drivers were a main cause of slow performance in its testing. Check for appropriate driver updates if the game is running slowly, particularly after changing hardware. Rockstar also notes that hardware changes can leave game settings invalid and describes resetting settings by removing specified game cache or configuration files. Follow the support article’s file instructions carefully, since removing configuration files resets settings.

If you need to diagnose a display or performance problem
Rockstar’s suggested tests include lowering draw distance, disabling the in-game widescreen setting, trying 640×480 at 16-bit color, and checking audio settings. These are diagnostic suggestions for the performance and settings issues covered by that support page, not a general widescreen repair. Disabling widescreen or testing a low resolution may help isolate a problem, but it does not provide the modern-resolution, aspect-ratio, HUD, and cutscene corrections documented for the community fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not mistake Rockstar’s version 1.1 patch for a widescreen fix
Rockstar’s “Patch Info – Grand Theft Auto: Vice City”, last updated August 18, 2026, describes an unsupported patch for polygon corruption on certain video-card and PC combinations. It changes GTA-VC.EXE to version 1.1; the notes say saves and settings carry forward. Rockstar says users who do not have the described corruption need not apply it. The patch notes do not describe widescreen support, so this patch is not the solution to stretching or a misplaced HUD.
