If GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- closes immediately, stays on Steam’s “Preparing to Launch” message, shows a black window, or reports a fatal startup error, work through the checks below in order. The usual gates are a supported 64-bit Windows installation, enough free storage, current Windows and graphics drivers, intact Steam files, and the absence of software that blocks or hooks the game. There is no universal fix for every PC, but this sequence moves from the safest checks to targeted repairs without reinstalling Windows or buying new hardware.
Check compatibility before changing anything
Steam lists GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- as a 64-bit Windows game using DirectX 11. Record your Windows edition and version, graphics-card model, graphics-driver version, and free space on the drive that contains the game. A machine at or below the minimum specification can fail before a window appears, so do this check first.

The game listing’s Windows 8/10 wording describes the game requirement, while Steam separately states that its current client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. In practice, a current Steam installation should be running on Windows 10 or 11. If your system does not meet the minimum GPU, RAM, operating-system, or storage requirement, software troubleshooting cannot make that hardware compliant.
Use the symptom to choose the fastest branch

Step-by-step fixes
1. Confirm the installation and capture basic details
- Open Settings in Windows, choose System, then About, and note whether the system type is 64-bit and which Windows version is installed.
- In Settings > System > Storage, check the drive containing the Steam library. Keep at least 26 GB available for the listed minimum; 30 GB is the recommended capacity.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Performance, and record the GPU model and installed memory. The graphics-driver version can be found in the GPU’s properties or the vendor’s control panel.
Keep these notes. If the problem reaches technical support, the Windows version, GPU and driver versions, free space, and exact symptom are more useful than a description such as “it just does not work.”
2. Restart Windows, Steam, and the test environment
- Exit the game and Steam completely. In Steam, use Steam > Exit rather than only closing the window.
- Restart Windows. This clears a process that may still hold the game files or graphics device.
- Before launching again, close non-essential third-party software: overlays, screen-recording and capture tools, hardware monitors, RGB utilities, mod loaders, and similar background programs.
- Start Steam and test the game with only Steam and normal Windows services running. If it launches, re-enable utilities one at a time to identify the conflict.
Steam’s launch guidance treats software conflicts as a common cause, and Intel gives the same advice when diagnosing Guilty Gear Strive issues on Intel Arc systems. Do not permanently uninstall a utility based on one failed test; isolate it first.

3. Install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install all applicable updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Run the check again after restarting so that a staged update is not left incomplete.
Windows components used by Steam, DirectX, display drivers, and media playback can change through servicing updates. A pending restart can therefore produce a launch failure even when the game files themselves are correct.

4. Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer
- Identify whether the PC uses an AMD Radeon, NVIDIA GeForce, Intel Arc, or another supported GPU.
- Use the manufacturer’s official driver channel to install the current driver for that exact model and Windows version.
- Restart Windows after installation, then launch the game before reopening overlays or monitoring tools.
Steam and Capcom both place graphics-driver updates near the start of launch troubleshooting because an outdated or incompatible driver can fail during initialization. If the issue began immediately after a driver change, note that fact for support rather than repeatedly installing unrelated drivers.

5. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow Steam to finish. If it reacquires files, restart Steam and test the game again.
Steam says that a game that will not launch is often caused by corruption in extracted game files. Verification compares the local installation with Steam’s records and replaces missing or damaged data; it does not change your Windows drivers or hardware.
6. Check whether security software is blocking the executable
Security products can occasionally flag a legitimate game executable incorrectly and prevent it from starting. Capcom identifies this false-positive behavior as one possible cause of launching problems.

- Open the settings for your installed security product and review its quarantine, blocked-items, or detection history for the game.
- If the product supports exclusions, temporarily add the game’s installation folder and executable to its exclusion list for a controlled test. Use the exact folder shown by Steam rather than excluding an entire drive.
- Launch the game once. If the exclusion changes the result, remove the temporary exception after diagnosis and restore normal protection.
Do not disable protection permanently, and do not treat an exclusion as proof that a file is safe. If the security product reports a genuine threat, follow its remediation guidance instead of bypassing it.

7. Test administrator permissions
- Close Steam.
- Right-click the Steam shortcut and choose Run as administrator, then test the game.
- If needed for diagnosis, locate the game executable in the Steam installation folder, open its Properties, select Compatibility, and use Run this program as an administrator for a single test.
Capcom includes administrator privileges for Steam and the executable among its troubleshooting checks. If this changes the result, investigate folder permissions or security controls rather than leaving every application elevated indefinitely.

8. Review graphics and Windows power settings
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the game if it is not listed, and select the high-performance GPU option when the PC has more than one graphics processor.
- In Settings > System > Power & battery, choose an appropriate performance-oriented mode while testing, especially on a laptop connected to AC power.
- Check the GPU control panel for a per-game profile that forces an unavailable feature or an unusual power state. Restore the game profile to its defaults and test again.
These checks address the graphics and power-setting conflicts listed in Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance. They do not increase the game’s published requirements; they simply ensure Windows is selecting the intended device and power policy.
9. Check Windows media components and codecs where applicable
Capcom also lists Windows Media Player codec updates as a possible launch remedy for Steam games. If your Windows edition or media components are incomplete or outdated, install the applicable Microsoft media component or codec update through the normal Windows-supported channel, restart, and test again. Skip this branch if your installation already has current media components and the failure clearly occurs before any window opens.
10. Refresh Steam’s download cache if verification behaves abnormally
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Choose Clear Download Cache and confirm. Steam will require you to sign in again.
- After signing in, repeat the Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files check and test the launch.
Use this only after the simpler restart and verification steps. Clearing the cache can remove a stalled download state, but it is not a substitute for checking free space or updating Windows and the graphics driver.
What to record if the game still will not launch
Do not guess at a fix-success rate; the official guidance publishes none, and PC configurations vary. Instead, create a concise record:
- The exact symptom: immediate exit, black screen, “Preparing to Launch,” or the complete fatal-error text.
- Windows edition, version, and whether it is 64-bit.
- GPU model and graphics-driver version.
- Available space on the Steam-library drive and installed RAM.
- Whether file verification reacquired files.
- Whether closing overlays or other third-party applications changed the result.
- Whether a security product reported or blocked the executable.
- Whether the problem began after a Windows or graphics-driver update.
Use Steam’s technical-support page for GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- and include that record. The official support route can request logs or configuration details specific to your installation; escalation is the appropriate next step when the documented sequence does not resolve the failure.
