If Halls of Torment will not open, first check whether ReShade is installed or active for the game: the developer identifies it as a known cause of startup trouble and recommends disabling it for Halls of Torment or uninstalling it. If that does not help—or the game crashes during play—collect the game’s logs and send them with a brief description of what happened to the developer’s support team. These are documented checks, not a guarantee that one cause explains every crash.
If Halls of Torment will not start, check ReShade
Chasing Carrots says ReShade can cause crashes or prevent Halls of Torment from starting. If you use it, deactivate it for this game or uninstall it, then try launching again. This is the developer’s specific documented startup-conflict check; the post does not identify it as the cause of every launch failure.

Find the Windows logs
On Windows, the developer lists the game data location as %AppData%HallsOfTorment, usually C:Users<userID>AppDataRoamingHallsOfTorment. The log file is in the logs folder, and crash reports, if present, are in crashes. If you cannot see the AppData or Roaming folder, enable viewing hidden folders in File Explorer.
Linux and Steam Deck paths
The developer’s post lists Linux data at ~.local/share/HallsOfTorment and Steam Deck data at /home/deck/local/share/HallsOfTorment. These are not Windows paths; use the location for the operating system you are playing on.
The developer’s crash-report instructions are in its Steam troubleshooting post. Steam Support also lists Chasing Carrots’ support email for the game.
Check whether your PC meets the Windows requirements
Compare your system with the requirements currently published on the Steam store page. Meeting the minimum specifications is a compatibility check, not a promise that the game will run without crashes.
| Windows specification | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or newer, 64-bit | Windows 10 or newer, 64-bit |
| Processor | Four CPU cores at 2.5 GHz or above | Four CPU cores at 3.5 GHz or above |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Intel Iris Xe, Nvidia GTX 970, or AMD RX 570 (Adrenalin 22.1.2) | See the current Steam store page; a separate recommended graphics specification is not stated here. |
| Storage | 4 GB available space | See the current Steam store page; a separate recommended storage specification is not stated here. |
If the problem is slowdown rather than a crash
The developer’s October 25, 2024 guidance concerns performance drops under certain conditions, not a game that cannot open. It says heavy slowdowns are generally CPU-related in those cases and suggests these adjustments:
- Disable damage numbers when many effects are active.
- Try pixelated fonts if you have a weaker GPU or limited memory, especially at high display resolutions.
- Check that your graphics drivers support Vulkan.
These suggestions address performance conditions described by the developer; they are not established as general fixes for launch failures. See the developer’s performance guidance.
