The right fix depends on when Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban fails. At launch, the error LockRect failed: D3DERR_DEVICELOST points to a legacy Direct3D problem; a freeze during gameplay can be a frame-rate timing issue; and a retail-disc copy that will not start on a modern Windows version may be blocked by SafeDisc. Note the exact error and failure point before changing settings, then use the matching steps below.
Identify where the game fails
Record your Windows version, whether you have a retail disc or another build, whether the game exits or simply freezes, and when the problem occurs. The game-specific fixes documented by PCGamingWiki address different failure modes; one is not a universal fix for the others.

Fix a Direct3D error at launch
If the game stops at launch with LockRect failed: D3DERR_DEVICELOST, PCGamingWiki lists dgVoodoo 2 as a workaround for the default Direct3D render-device problem reported on Windows 8 and later. The page says the workaround was tested on Windows 10; that does not establish that it works on every later Windows build or every edition of the game.
Follow the instructions provided with the dgVoodoo 2 release you choose and keep a copy of any original game files before replacing or adding files. This is a community-documented compatibility workaround, not a guaranteed publisher fix. See the PCGamingWiki entry for the game-specific notes.

Stop freezes caused by frame-rate timing
Frozen Imp in Ron’s first Carpe Retractum challenge
If the imp remains frozen after its introduction cutscene, PCGamingWiki identifies a likely timing error in the cutscene script. Limit the game to 60 FPS before retrying the sequence. Once the imp becomes active, the page says you can optionally remove the limiter.
Secret portraits that do not open
Some password-triggered secret portraits may fail to open when the game runs above 60 FPS. Use a 60 FPS cap while attempting to open them.

- Control Ron Weasly, Hermione Granger as well as Harry Potter -- Help them survive the dangers of Azkaban, the infamous wizard's prison
- Face off against the dreaded Dementors - these powerful prison guards will test Harry and his friends' magic to their limits
- Use amazing all-new spells - Freeze creatures, control dragons and conjure up a Patronus
- Multiple exciting subquests - Fly on a Hippogriff, reveal the secrets of the Marauder's Map and face wild, magical two-player challenges
The unofficial PCGamingWiki Community FPS and Controller Support Fix 1.0.0 listing offers 60 FPS and 120 FPS launchers. For troubleshooting these documented above-60-FPS problems, start with 60 FPS; the availability of a 120 FPS option does not make it the safer choice for timing-sensitive sequences.
Check retail-disc SafeDisc compatibility
PCGamingWiki identifies the retail release as using SafeDisc and says that this DRM does not work on Windows 10 and later. This warning applies to that release path; it does not prove that every copy or digital build fails. If you have a retail disc and the game fails before starting, identify the edition before trying rendering or gameplay fixes. A replacement disc or DVD drive does not resolve a DRM incompatibility.

Try general Windows compatibility steps if none of those symptoms match
Microsoft’s advice for older programs is general Windows guidance, not a confirmed fix for this particular game. If the error does not match the cases above, use these steps to check for broader compatibility or driver problems.
- Install available Windows updates.
- Open the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and follow its prompts for the game.
- Check for updated graphics-device drivers where appropriate.
Microsoft describes these approaches in its guides to making older apps compatible with the latest Windows version and troubleshooting games that crash or close unexpectedly. The latter covers a set of Microsoft titles and is not specific to this game.
