Hook32.dll is not a standard Windows component, so the filename alone cannot tell you what to replace. Different software has used that name, including a legacy ZENworks Remote Management component, an OBS graphics-hook listing and an archived Microsoft MAPI sample. The reliable fix is to identify the program that called the file, then repair or reinstall that complete program from its original or administrator-approved package. Do not download a random Hook32.dll, copy it into System32, or register it blindly. Use malware checks when the file vanished unexpectedly, and use DISM followed by SFC only when Windows itself shows broader corruption.
What is Hook32.dll, and why is the filename ambiguous?
A DLL is a shared library containing code and data that programs can load when they run. Windows does not assign one universal owner to every filename, and Hook32.dll is not a standard Windows runtime file. Indexed references associate the name with unrelated software, so “Hook32.dll is missing” is not enough information to select a replacement.

One frequently indexed association is the legacy Novell ZENworks for Desktops Remote Management Agent Component. Other records label a file “OBS Graphics Hook,” while an archived Microsoft MAPI sample also contains a file with the same name. Those references describe different binaries; they do not prove that any one of them belongs on your computer.
The message can appear as “Hook32.dll was not found,” “error loading Hook32.dll,” “the procedure entry point could not be located,” an access violation, a crash, or “Cannot register Hook32.dll.” Each wording points to a different stage of loading. A missing-file message usually means the caller cannot find a dependency; an entry-point or access-violation message can indicate a wrong version, architecture mismatch or incompatible companion files.

What should I record before changing anything?
Capture the complete context first. This prevents you from repairing the wrong product or restoring a file that belongs to a different program.
- Copy the full dialog. Include the title-bar program name, the exact spelling and capitalization of the error, and any path shown.
- Identify the caller. Open Task Manager, select the relevant process, choose Open file location, and note the executable path. For a service, open the Services app, inspect its properties and record the service name and executable path.
- Check startup sources. In Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, note an entry that triggers the message. Also inspect Task Scheduler for a task that launches the affected program.
- Use Event Viewer when the dialog disappears. Open Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application, find the error at the matching time and record the faulting application, faulting module and exception code.
- Write down what changed. Updates, uninstallations, restored backups, security quarantines and new hardware can all explain why a dependency suddenly disappeared.
Do not infer ownership from a file name found in a search result. The executable, service or startup path is the evidence that connects Hook32.dll to a specific product.

The name is not proof of either safety or infection. A legitimate application can use it, and a malicious file can use any familiar-looking name. Treat an unexplained disappearance, a quarantine event, an unexpected folder location or other suspicious behavior as a security incident until checked.
- Run a full scan with your installed antivirus product.
- If Windows Defender or another security product quarantined the file, review the detection name and quarantine path before restoring anything.
- For a deeper Windows check, Microsoft documents Defender Offline and the Microsoft Safety Scanner; use the current download and instructions from Microsoft rather than an unofficial mirror.
- Do not add an exclusion for the file merely to make the error disappear.
A clean scan does not identify the correct owner. It only reduces the chance that you are restoring a malicious or altered binary.

How do I fix a Hook32.dll error caused by ZENworks?
If the dialog, service or path names ZENworks, ZENRC or a ZENworks directory, treat this as a ZENworks Remote Management installation problem. It is a legacy enterprise component, so the safest package is the one maintained by your organization.
Repair an installation that is still required
- Contact the administrator who manages your ZENworks deployment and confirm the supported agent version for your Windows edition.
- Use the organization’s original installation media or approved software-distribution package to run a repair or complete reinstall of the agent. Repairing the whole agent restores its companion files, services and registry entries together.
- Restart Windows, then launch the managed application or service that previously failed.
- If the error remains, provide the administrator with the exact path, agent version, Windows version and Event Viewer details. A package for a different ZENworks release can produce entry-point or dependency errors.
Remove an obsolete installation
If your organization no longer uses ZENworks, do not copy a DLL back simply to silence a startup message. Ask the administrator to remove the obsolete agent through the normal software-management process. That process should remove its service, startup item and scheduled task, rather than leaving an orphan that continues to call Hook32.dll.

What if another application owns Hook32.dll?
When the caller is not ZENworks, use that application’s installer or vendor support channel. A complete reinstall is safer than extracting one file because the program may require a matching set of DLLs, configuration files, permissions and registry entries.
- Check Apps → Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) for the named program.
- Download the installer only from the publisher or your organization’s managed repository. Match the product edition and release already in use.
- If the installer offers Repair, use it first. If not, uninstall and reinstall after confirming that saved projects, profiles or game settings are backed up.
- Restart before testing. Some shared components and services are not replaced until a reboot.
- If the program was recently removed, remove its leftover startup entry or scheduled task instead of restoring Hook32.dll.
For software installed by a workplace, school or game launcher, a local administrator may need to perform the repair. Do not substitute a similarly named file from a DLL repository; it may be the wrong release, 32/64-bit architecture, export set or code-signing status.

Should I download Hook32.dll from a DLL website?
No. A loose download cannot establish which product’s binary you need, and it may omit companion files or contain altered code. Even a file with the same displayed name can have different exports, dependencies and permissions.
One third-party listing reports a 32.00 KB x86 variant and publishes MD5 and SHA-1 hashes. That is an identification aid for that particular listing, not a universal specification. Other legitimate Hook32.dll files can have different sizes, hashes and architectures. If you must compare a file, compare its digital signature and hash with a value supplied by the owning vendor or your administrator, not with a generic search result.
Can DISM and SFC repair Hook32.dll?
They can repair Windows component-store or protected system-file corruption, but they do not recreate an arbitrary application-owned Hook32.dll. Use them when other Windows files are also failing, Windows servicing reports corruption, or the owner has confirmed that the problem is broader than one application.
- Save work and open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Wait for DISM to finish. It can appear paused while checking or repairing the component store.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows and retest the original application.
Running SFC first can leave it without a healthy component source. If either command reports an error, record the exact code and message rather than downloading a replacement DLL. The commands may fix Windows dependencies, but an application still needs its own correctly versioned files.

How do architecture and dependency errors change the fix?
A 32-bit caller generally needs a compatible 32-bit build of its dependency, while a 64-bit caller needs a compatible 64-bit build. The exact rule depends on the application’s design, and a filename does not reveal the architecture.
- Check the application’s documented system requirements or installer messages for x86, x64 or ARM64 support.
- For an entry-point error, reinstall the same application build and its companion runtime; do not replace only Hook32.dll.
- For “module could not be found,” remember that Windows may be missing a dependency named elsewhere in the load chain, not the file named in the dialog.
- For an access violation after an update, roll back or reinstall the owning application using the vendor’s supported version rather than mixing files from two releases.
Microsoft’s DLL guidance emphasizes module compatibility and dependency checking. If an administrator or vendor requests diagnostics, provide the executable path, file properties, architecture, digital signature and any specified hash. Do not publish hashes from an unrelated listing as proof of authenticity.
How do I handle “Cannot register Hook32.dll”?
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that implement the registration interface, commonly COM components. Many libraries, including hook or graphics modules, are not self-registering. A registration failure can therefore be expected and does not prove the file is missing.
Only run a registration command when the owning application’s documentation explicitly requires it and provides the correct 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32.exe. Otherwise, use the application’s repair installer. If registration worked before an update and now fails, reinstall the matching application build and check its dependencies instead of forcing registration.

What do common Hook32.dll messages mean?
| Message or symptom | Most useful first check | Likely repair path |
|---|---|---|
| “Hook32.dll is missing” or “could not be located” | Identify the executable and its installation directory | Repair or reinstall that complete application |
| “Error loading Hook32.dll” | Check whether security software quarantined it and whether dependencies are present | Security scan, then trusted application repair |
| “Procedure entry point not found” | Compare application and DLL release/architecture | Reinstall a matching application build; do not mix files |
| Access violation or immediate crash | Review Event Viewer for the faulting module and recent updates | Repair the owner, roll back a known-bad update, and check dependencies |
| “Cannot register Hook32.dll” | Confirm whether the vendor actually requires registration | Use the installer’s repair process; avoid blind regsvr32 commands |
When should I escalate the problem?
Escalate to your administrator or the software vendor when the owner is unclear, the application is managed by an organization, the file is quarantined, or reinstalling the verified package does not resolve the error. Send a compact evidence bundle:
- Application and version, Windows edition and build
- Exact dialog text and time of failure
- Executable, service or startup path
- Event Viewer faulting module and exception code
- Whether the file exists, where it is located and whether it has a valid signature
- What changed immediately before the problem
- Results of the antivirus scan, DISM and SFC, including error codes
This information lets support choose the correct installer or deployment package and avoids guessing from the filename alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete Hook32.dll to stop the startup error?
Deleting the file can leave the owning program partially installed and create additional errors. If the software is no longer needed, remove it through its uninstaller or your organization’s software-management process, then disable the leftover startup task or service.
How can I check whether a Hook32.dll file is digitally signed?
Right-click the file, choose Properties and open the Digital Signatures tab. Check that the signer matches the application publisher and inspect the signature details; an absent or invalid signature is a reason to obtain the component from the official installer instead of restoring it.
Does a 32.00 KB Hook32.dll prove that my file is authentic?
No. That size was reported for one x86 listing and is not a universal value. Authentic files from other products or releases can differ, so verify against the owning vendor’s package, signature or administrator-provided hash.
Recommended Free Tools
Why did the error appear immediately after an antivirus quarantine?
The security product may have removed a file it considered suspicious or may have detected corruption. Review the detection record, run a full scan and ask the application owner for a clean replacement package; do not restore the quarantined file solely because its name matches.
