HP error 0x007007e does not identify one confirmed failed part or one universal repair. The code is sparsely documented; an HP Support Community report from February 24, 2021 describes an OfficeJet Pro 8025 on 64-bit Windows 10 that could not print photos, but it does not establish a cause. Restore printing by power-resetting the printer, checking its physical and network status, testing a Windows page and a standalone copy, clearing the print queue, reinstalling the printer, and installing the exact HP package for your model and Windows edition. Factory-reset the printer only when the model’s instructions call for it.
What does HP printer error 0x007007e mean?
The hexadecimal string alone is not enough to diagnose your printer. HP has not published a universal component-level definition, prevalence figure, or repair-success rate for 0x007007e. Do not infer that an ink cartridge, toner, printhead, USB cable, formatter board, or other replaceable part is defective solely because this code appears.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe clearest HP-specific record is a February 24, 2021 report about an HP OfficeJet Pro 8025 connected to 64-bit Windows 10. The owner said photos would not print and displayed 0x007007e. An HP employee asked where the message appeared, whether copying worked, and whether the problem affected photos only or every document. That response reflects the key diagnostic rule: the location and trigger matter as much as the code.
Before changing anything, record the complete message exactly as shown, the printer’s full model name, Windows edition and architecture, USB or Wi-Fi connection, application being used, and whether plain documents, photos, Windows test pages, and standalone copies work.

What should I check before trying a repair?
Capture a baseline so you can tell which change helped and give HP useful information if you need service.
- Printer: write down the exact model, such as OfficeJet Pro 8025, and photograph the printer display if it shows additional text.
- Computer: note whether you use Windows 11 or Windows 10 and whether it is 64-bit or 32-bit. Open Settings > System > About to check.
- Connection: identify USB, Wi-Fi, or another network connection. For Wi-Fi, note the network name and whether the computer and printer are on the same network.
- Trigger: record the application, file type, and action that produces the error. State whether it occurs only with photos or with every job.
- Independent tests: try a printer control-panel copy and, later, a Windows test page. These tests separate printer-side behavior from the Windows print path.
How do I power-reset the HP printer safely?
A full power reset is reversible and is the first HP-recommended recovery step for a printer that will not print.

- Turn the printer off with its power button. If it is busy, wait for the shutdown to finish.
- Disconnect the power cord from the printer and then from the electrical outlet.
- Wait a full 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the cord directly to a wall outlet, not through a computer, and reconnect it to the printer.
- Turn the printer on and wait until its display reports a ready or idle state. Do not send a job while it is initializing.
- Print a simple text document, then try the job that originally produced 0x007007e.
This procedure comes from HP’s “HP printers – Cannot print” guidance. If the printer cannot reach ready or idle, stop sending jobs and continue with the status inspection below.
How do I check printer status and the connection?
A printer that is paused, offline, jammed, or on a different network can fail before a driver has a chance to process the job.

Inspect the printer itself
- Open every indicated cover and remove visible paper only as the model’s instructions show; do not force a carriage or roller.
- Check the display for paper, cover, carriage, ink, toner, or other warnings. Resolve the warning before testing from Windows.
- Make sure the input tray contains the correct paper size and that the output path is clear.
Check a USB connection
- Turn off the printer and reconnect the USB plug firmly at both ends.
- Try another USB port on the computer. Avoid an unpowered hub while diagnosing.
- Turn the printer on, wait for ready, and check whether Windows lists it under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11 or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
Check a Wi-Fi or network connection
- Confirm the printer’s Wi-Fi indicator or network status shows a connection.
- Confirm the computer and printer are connected to the same local network. A guest network or isolated wireless network can prevent discovery.
- Restart the printer and, if necessary, the network equipment according to its own instructions, then look for the printer again in Printers & scanners.
Microsoft’s printer-connection guidance recommends these physical, USB, wireless, and discovery checks. If Windows detects the printer but jobs remain stuck, proceed to the queue repair rather than repeatedly reconnecting cables.
Does the error affect photos, every document, or copying?
Run three short tests before making deeper changes. Their pattern determines which branch to follow.
- Standalone copy: place a page on the scanner and make a copy from the printer’s control panel. This does not use the Windows queue.
- Windows test page: open the printer in Printers & scanners, choose Printer properties (not only the modern preferences page), select the General tab, and choose Print Test Page when available.
- Plain document: print a short text document from a basic application, then retry the original photo or document.
| Observed pattern | Most useful interpretation | Next priority |
|---|---|---|
| Only photos or one application fail | The application, image, or photo-print path is implicated, but this does not prove a hardware fault. | Try the same image in another application and print a plain document and Windows test page. |
| Windows jobs fail, but standalone copying works | The printer can perform an internal operation; connection, queue, printer registration, or driver problems become more likely. | Clear the queue, restart the spooler, remove and re-add the printer, then install the exact HP package. |
| Copying and Windows printing both fail | The problem is not limited to a Windows application. | Inspect for printer warnings, repeat the HP power reset, and use model-specific HP support. |
| The code disappears and later returns | A recurring trigger remains, but the code does not identify which part is responsible. | Record the exact trigger, connection, application, and test results before escalation. |
How do I clear a stuck Windows print queue?
Pending or corrupted jobs can prevent new jobs from reaching the printer. Clearing the queue is reversible and does not reset printer settings.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 11) or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners (Windows 10).
- Select the affected HP printer and choose Open print queue or Open queue.
- From the queue menu, choose Cancel all or cancel each pending document. Wait for the list to empty.
- Send a small plain-text job. If it remains at “Deleting,” “Error,” or “Printing,” close the queue window.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Restart. If restart is unavailable, choose Stop, wait a few seconds, then choose Start.
- Reopen the queue and test again.
Microsoft documents queue cancellation and Print Spooler recovery for Windows printing failures. Do not delete random files or registry entries while diagnosing this code; use the documented queue and service controls first.

How do I remove and reinstall the HP printer in Windows?
Re-adding the device creates a fresh Windows printer entry and can correct a broken association without changing the printer’s internal configuration.
- In Printers & scanners, select the affected printer and choose Remove or Remove device. Confirm only the entry for the affected printer.
- Restart Windows. A restart completes removal of components that may still be in use.
- Return to Settings > Printers & scanners and choose Add device (Windows 11) or Add a printer or scanner (Windows 10).
- Wait for discovery. Select the exact HP model rather than a similarly named device. For a network printer that is not discovered, use the model’s documented network or IP-add method.
- After installation, open the new queue and print a Windows test page, followed by a plain document.
If the new entry works but the original application still fails, the remaining issue may be in that application or its photo-print settings. If the new entry cannot print at all, continue with the exact-model software installation.
Which HP driver and software should I install?
Use HP’s official support page for the precise printer model and select the Windows edition and architecture actually installed on the computer. Do not choose a package merely because the product family name looks similar.
- Identify the complete model from the printer label or control panel.
- On HP’s model-specific support page, select Windows 11 or Windows 10 as appropriate and confirm 32-bit or 64-bit architecture where the page asks.
- Download the current HP printing software and driver listed for that model and edition.
- Close the application that produced the error, run the installer, and follow its connection instructions. If the installer asks you to connect a USB cable, wait until it requests the connection.
- Restart Windows after installation, even if the installer does not require it.
- Print a test page, then a plain document, then the original photo or document.
HP’s Windows-update troubleshooting guidance also recommends restarting Windows, using HP Smart diagnostics when available for the model, and reinstalling current HP printing software when failures begin after an update.

| Driver choice | Compatibility decision | Likely feature coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Exact HP model package | Chosen for the specific model and Windows edition | Best match for the model’s documented printing and device features |
| Windows built-in or class driver | May be selected automatically when Windows discovers the printer | Basic printing may work, but model-specific features and diagnostics may not be available; the exact coverage is not stated for 0x007007e |
The table is a selection guide, not a claim that a built-in driver causes this code. If the exact HP package is unavailable for your Windows edition, record that limitation when contacting HP rather than installing a package for a different model.
Should I restore factory defaults?
Use a factory reset only after the power, connection, queue, reinstallation, and exact-driver steps, or when HP support directs it. A reset changes configuration and is not equivalent to restarting Windows.
- Find the exact model’s reset procedure in HP’s “Restore factory defaults on your HP printer” guidance.
- Depending on the model, start the reset from the HP app, the printer control panel, or the Embedded Web Server.
- Read the confirmation screen carefully and record any network or custom settings you will need to enter again.
- Confirm the reset and wait for the printer to finish restarting.
- Reconnect the printer to USB or Wi-Fi using the model’s setup procedure, then add it again in Windows if necessary.
- Install or select the exact-model HP software and print a test page.
Because menus differ by model, do not apply a button sequence copied from another HP printer. If the printer cannot complete the reset or never reaches ready state afterward, stop and contact HP with the model and complete message.

| Setup | Detection check | Stability check |
|---|---|---|
| USB | Windows should list the printer after reconnecting the cable and powering on. | Try a different computer USB port and a direct connection while testing; a hub can add another failure point. |
| Wi-Fi | The printer and computer must be on the same local network for normal discovery. | Confirm the printer remains connected after a restart and is not isolated on a guest network. |
| Other network connection | Use the model’s documented discovery or IP-add process if automatic search fails. | Record whether the printer’s network address changes or disappears, and provide that information to HP. |
These checks do not establish that a cable or wireless signal caused 0x007007e. They establish whether Windows can consistently reach the printer after it is reinstalled.
When should I contact HP support?
Escalate when the documented sequence cannot restore a ready printer or when the code returns under a repeatable condition. Contact HP if any of the following applies:
- The printer cannot reach ready or idle state after the power reset.
- A standalone copy and Windows test page both fail.
- The printer shows a persistent paper, cover, carriage, or other panel warning that you cannot resolve using the model instructions.
- The queue, reinstallation, and exact-model HP package do not restore printing.
- The factory reset cannot complete, or the code returns immediately after reconnecting and reinstalling.
Provide the complete error text, model, Windows edition and architecture, connection type, application, whether photos or all documents fail, and the results of copying, the Windows test page, queue clearing, reinstallation, and reset. This is more useful than reporting the hexadecimal string alone.
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and has a two-day free trial with no credit card before a subscription; results vary, and it cannot repair every printer failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HP error 0x007007e a cartridge or ink warning?
No cited HP guidance defines it as a cartridge or ink warning. Because the code is not tied to a specific replaceable part, check the printer’s own display for a separate consumable message before buying supplies.
Will a factory reset erase my printer’s Wi-Fi settings?
A factory restoration changes the printer’s configuration, so network settings may need to be entered again. Record the network details and follow the exact model procedure rather than assuming another model’s menu sequence applies.
Why can I copy a page but not print a photo from Windows?
Copying uses the printer’s internal path, while a Windows photo job also depends on the application, image format, queue, connection, and driver. Test the same image in another application and compare it with a plain document and Windows test page.
How do I know whether I need a 32-bit or 64-bit HP driver?
Open Settings > System > About and read the system type, then select that architecture on HP’s support page for the exact model. A package for a different architecture or model can fail to install or provide the wrong device support.
