HRESULT 0x8007422 is not a clearly defined, standalone Windows error code. Microsoft-hosted reports show the same characters in Microsoft Store, Store app, Xbox and game sign-in or update situations, while Microsoft’s common Windows Update table does not list that literal value. First copy the code exactly and identify which component displayed it. Then follow the matching Store, Windows Update or app-specific repair path below.
Do not silently substitute 0x80070422. That is a different, documented code meaning that the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. Applying service changes solely because the numbers look similar can send you down the wrong branch.

The characters 0x8007422 do not have one confirmed Microsoft definition. A Microsoft Q&A thread dated May 5, 2023 describes the string when Microsoft Store would not open, Store apps would not download and games such as Minecraft would not sign in. A separate Microsoft Q&A thread dated March 8, 2024 shows the same string in an Xbox or update context; a community advisor interpreted it as 0x80070422, but that interpretation is not an official definition of 0x8007422.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting table documents 0x80070422 as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped” and does not list 0x8007422. Treat the shorter-looking code as unverified until you confirm the original message. The application that displayed it is more useful for choosing a repair than the text alone.

No published prevalence or fix-success percentage establishes how common either situation is. A successful repair on one computer does not prove that the same component caused the message on another.
What should I verify before changing Windows settings?
Spend a few minutes establishing the facts. This prevents a Store cache problem from being treated as a Windows Update service problem.
Recommended Free Tools
- Reopen the original message. Copy every character, including the leading
0x, from the dialog, screenshot or Event Viewer entry. Check whether the code is actually0x8007422or0x80070422. - Record where it appeared. Note whether the failure came from Microsoft Store, one Store app or game, Xbox sign-in, Windows Update or another installer. Also note whether the failure affects one title, one account or several apps.
- Record your Windows build. Press
Windows key + R, typewinver, and press Enter. Write down the edition, version and build shown in the About Windows dialog. - Write down the timing. Record what you were doing immediately before the message, such as opening Store, starting a download, signing in to a game or checking for updates.
- Keep a running result log. After each repair, note whether the same action succeeds, fails with a new message or produces no change. This gives support a reproducible history instead of a guess about the cause.
How do I fix 0x8007422 when Microsoft Store will not open or download?
Use the Store branch when the message appears while opening Microsoft Store, downloading a Store app or game, or launching a Store-delivered title. Start with the reversible cache reset, then update Windows and Store before repairing or resetting an individual app.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
- Press
Windows key + Rto open the Run dialog. - Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while a blank Command Prompt window appears. It should close by itself, and Microsoft Store should open automatically.
- Try the original action again, such as opening Store or beginning the download.
The command resets Store cache data; it does not establish that Windows Update was the root cause. If Store opens but the download still fails, continue with the update and app steps instead of repeating the command indefinitely.
Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings, choose Windows Update (under Update & Security on some Windows 10 layouts), select Check for updates, and install the updates offered for your edition and build. Restart when Windows requests it, then test the Store operation again.
Update Microsoft Store itself
Open Microsoft Store and go to its Library or updates area. Select Get updates or the equivalent update control shown by your Store version. Allow Store updates to finish before testing the affected app; an outdated Store client can fail even when Windows itself is current.

Repair the affected app or game
When only one app or game fails, use its Windows app settings rather than changing global services.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Select the affected app, open Advanced options, and choose Repair.
- Launch the app and repeat the action that produced the error.
- If Repair makes no difference, return to the same page and choose Reset. Reset can remove the app’s local data, so read the confirmation text and make sure you can sign in again before accepting it.
Microsoft’s Store guidance also allows reinstalling the affected Store app when appropriate. Use that only for the app that fails, not as a substitute for verifying the code or Windows component.
Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter when it is available
Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters on supported Windows 11 builds, or the corresponding Troubleshoot page in Windows 10. Run Windows Store Apps and apply any correction it reports. Microsoft has changed which troubleshooters are exposed in different releases, so the entry may not appear on every build.
How do I fix the error when Windows Update is the failing component?
If the message appears inside Windows Update, use Microsoft’s built-in Windows Update Troubleshooter first. Microsoft states: “If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.” The documented troubleshooter applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, choose System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run or Run the troubleshooter, and follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC when the process finishes, even if it reports that no change was required.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates again.
Record the troubleshooter’s result and the exact code shown after the restart. If the message remains 0x8007422, do not infer that the Update service is disabled merely from the similar digits.
Use the service-state repair only for an exact 0x80070422
Apply this section only after the original dialog or log confirms 0x80070422. Microsoft associates that code with a disabled or stopped Windows Update service.

- Press
Windows key + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the Services list and open its properties.
- Inspect Startup type. Set it to Automatic when appropriate for your Windows installation.
- If the service status is Stopped, select Start, then choose Apply and OK.
- Restart the computer and check for updates again.
If the service refuses to start, immediately stops, or is controlled by an organization policy, stop changing settings and preserve the error details for an administrator or Microsoft Support. Do not perform these service changes solely for an unverified 0x8007422.
What if Xbox or Minecraft shows 0x8007422 during sign-in?
Microsoft-hosted reports place the literal string in Xbox and Minecraft-related situations as well as Store failures. First determine whether the game was installed through Microsoft Store and whether Store itself can open and download another app.
- Store also fails: follow the Store branch, beginning with
wsreset.exe, Windows and Store updates, and the affected app’s Repair or Reset options. - Only the game sign-in fails: record the game name, Xbox app or Store version and whether another account reaches the sign-in screen. Use the game’s own support channel if Store operations work normally; the code alone does not identify an account, network or service cause.
- Windows Update also fails: run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and verify whether the exact code is
0x80070422before inspecting the Windows Update service.
Do not delete game data or reinstall every Xbox component as a first reaction. Narrowing the failure to Store, Windows Update or one game gives support a better basis for the next step.
What if another installer displays the code?
The available Microsoft reports do not define a universal repair for an installer outside Store, Xbox or Windows Update. Treat that case as component-specific: capture the installer name and version, the exact dialog text, the Windows build and the action that triggered it.
Use the installer publisher’s documented repair or update process rather than changing Windows Update services by assumption. If the installer is a Store app, return to the Store branch; if it is part of Windows Update, use the Windows Update branch. A code copied from a secondary log can also differ from the code shown in the original dialog, so compare both before escalating.
How do I choose the right repair path when symptoms overlap?
Use the first column that matches what you can reproduce. When two components fail, complete the least invasive branch first and record its result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAlso popular on Amazon
| Observed symptom | First action | Next escalation |
|---|---|---|
| Store will not open or any Store download fails | Run wsreset.exe, then install Windows and Store updates |
Repair or Reset the affected app; reinstall it when Microsoft’s guidance indicates |
| One Store app or game fails while Store works elsewhere | Use that app’s Advanced options > Repair | Use Reset, then reinstall the affected app if appropriate |
| Windows Update cannot download or install updates | Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and restart | Inspect Windows Update service state only when the exact code is 0x80070422 |
| Xbox or Minecraft sign-in fails | Check whether Store and other Store apps work, then follow the matching branch | Provide game, app and account scope to the relevant support channel |
| Another installer reports the string | Identify that installer and preserve its complete message | Use the installer publisher or device administrator’s documented support route |
When should I escalate to Microsoft Support or an administrator?
Escalate when the confirmed code persists after the matching branch, a required service will not start, or the computer is managed by an organization. Organization policies can prevent users from changing services or installing Store updates, so an administrator may need to perform the repair.
Include a concise evidence bundle:
- The screenshot or exact transcription of the original message, including capitalization and the leading
0x. - Windows edition, version and build from
winver. - The originating component: Store, a named app or game, Xbox, Windows Update or another installer.
- Whether the problem affects one app, one account, one device or multiple devices.
- The Windows Update service state if the confirmed code is
0x80070422. - The troubleshooter result and the outcome after each command or Settings action.
This information lets support distinguish a misread code from a component failure without asking you to repeat unrelated repairs.
Which mistakes commonly make this error harder to diagnose?
- Changing 0x8007422 to 0x80070422 from memory: preserve the literal value until the original message proves otherwise.
- Editing Services before identifying the component: service-state changes belong to the documented
0x80070422Windows Update branch, not to every Store or game failure. - Repeating cache resets without retesting: run
wsreset.exeonce, test the original action, and move to updates or app repair if the symptom remains. - Resetting every app: target the app that fails; a reset can remove its local data and may require another sign-in.
- Omitting the Windows build: Settings labels and available troubleshooters vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases, so the build is part of the diagnosis.
- Reporting only the number: the same unverified string has appeared in different Microsoft components, making the originating screen essential.
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does HRESULT 0x8007422 indicate a virus or malware infection?
The Microsoft reports associated with this string describe Store, update and sign-in symptoms, not a malware diagnosis. The code by itself is insufficient evidence of malicious software, so use the component-specific troubleshooting path and your normal security software rather than treating the number as an infection warning.
Can I keep using my PC while Windows Update is being troubleshot?
You can usually continue ordinary work while the troubleshooter runs, but save open work before restarting because the prescribed process includes a reboot. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, check with its administrator before changing update-service settings.
Why might the same characters appear in both a game and Microsoft Store?
Store-delivered games depend on Windows and Store components, so a failure reported during game launch or sign-in may surface in a different interface from the underlying problem. Testing Store independently helps separate a platform-wide issue from a single game or account issue.
Do I need to reinstall Windows for this code?
The documented guidance starts with verification, cache reset, built-in troubleshooters, updates and targeted app repair. A Windows reinstall is not established as a first-line remedy for the unverified 0x8007422 string and should not be chosen before the originating component is identified.
