Why GTA 6 Moved From 2025 to 2026—and How Red Dead Redemption 2 Fits In

Grand Theft Auto VI was originally announced for 2025. Rockstar later set a May 26, 2026 date and then moved the game again to November 19, 2026. Production history shows that most of Rockstar’s GTA VI team only moved onto the project after Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018. That supports a delayed full-production ramp-up, but the available evidence does not prove that RDR2 alone caused every delay.

What was GTA 6’s original release date?

Take-Two announced Grand Theft Auto VI in December 2023 with a 2025 launch window for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No specific day or month was given at that stage. The announcement established 2025 as the original public target, rather than a firm date that Rockstar later missed.

The game is now scheduled for November 19, 2026. That date is the latest official target in Rockstar’s public timeline and applies to the announced console versions.

GTA 6 release-date timeline

Date announced Release target What changed
December 2023 2025 Take-Two announced GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
May 2, 2025 May 26, 2026 Rockstar moved the game out of 2025, saying the extra time was needed to meet its quality goals and exceed player expectations.
November 6, 2025 November 19, 2026 Rockstar delayed the game again, saying the additional months would be used to finish it with the expected level of polish.

Why did GTA 6 move from 2025 to 2026?

Rockstar’s stated reason is finishing quality, not a specific technical problem, business change or platform issue. In its November 6, 2025 announcement, the studio wrote: “We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”

That is the strongest direct explanation in the available record. It describes a schedule decision intended to allow more finishing work before launch. Rockstar’s May 2, 2025 announcement similarly framed the move to May 26, 2026 around delivering a game that would exceed player expectations.

What the official explanation does—and does not—say

  • It confirms that Rockstar chose more development time over the 2025 launch window.
  • It identifies polish and quality as the public justification.
  • It does not assign a number of months to any single cause.
  • It does not say that Red Dead Redemption 2 was the sole reason for the 2025-to-2026 delays.

Was GTA 6 delayed because Rockstar focused on Red Dead Redemption 2?

The production sequence indicates that RDR2 affected when GTA VI could enter full-scale development. In an interview, Rockstar North co-studio and development head Rob Nelson said: “The game’s been in development since 2015, so the idea is gestating for a long time. The majority of the team really started rolling on to it after Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018.”

Those two milestones matter. GTA VI work began in 2015, but the majority of the team did not move onto it until after RDR2 shipped in 2018. In practical terms, Rockstar could develop concepts and early systems while its largest production resources were committed elsewhere, then scale GTA VI substantially once the western was complete.

What can be concluded

RDR2’s long production and resource priority likely delayed GTA VI’s full-production schedule. That is a reasonable conclusion from the staffing timeline Nelson described. It is different from saying that every later delay was caused by RDR2. The quoted interview does not quantify how much time the resource shift added, and Rockstar’s 2025 announcements attribute the subsequent date changes to the need for more polish.

Why RDR2’s own delay provides context

Red Dead Redemption 2 was itself moved to spring 2018. Take-Two said the additional time was needed to deliver the intended quality. That history helps explain why Rockstar’s next major project could not receive most of its staff until after RDR2 was finished: the western remained in active production while Rockstar continued extending its development schedule to reach its quality target.

How strong is the evidence for the RDR2 connection?

Explanation Evidence What it establishes
More time for polish Rockstar’s May and November 2025 release announcements The publisher’s stated reason for moving GTA VI to 2026 and then later in 2026.
Most GTA VI staff joined after RDR2 Rob Nelson’s interview account GTA VI began in 2015, while the majority of the team moved onto it after RDR2 released in 2018.
Exact delay caused by RDR2 Not quantified in the cited statements No precise number of months or a claim that RDR2 caused every GTA VI delay.

The fairest reading is therefore two-part: RDR2 shaped the starting conditions for GTA VI’s main production phase, while Rockstar publicly explained the later date changes as a decision to finish and polish the game.

When is GTA 6 actually coming out?

Rockstar’s current announced date is November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Because this is a future release date, it remains a target rather than proof that the game has entered its final certification or manufacturing stage. Rockstar has already changed the schedule twice, so another adjustment would be possible, although no further delay has been announced in the supplied statements.

Is there a physical PS5 version of GTA 6?

Yes. Rockstar’s support information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S pre-orders and documents physical editions for those platforms. The physical edition includes a download code, so buying a boxed copy does not necessarily mean the entire game is stored on the disc. Check the retailer’s regional listing for the exact packaging and redemption requirements before ordering.

What the delay means for players

  • The 2025 launch window is no longer current.
  • The first revised date, May 26, 2026, has also been replaced.
  • The operative date is November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • The public reason for the two 2025 schedule changes is additional polish and quality work.
  • RDR2’s production explains why GTA VI’s majority staffing ramped up after 2018, but the exact amount of delay attributable to that shift is unknown.
