“Invalid verify switch” is not one universal error. In Windows, ERROR_INVALID_VERIFY_SWITCH is system error 118 (0x76), meaning the verify-on-write parameter is invalid. The Windows verify command accepts only verify on or verify off; entering verify alone displays the current setting. Check the code and program name
Read the complete line, including the prefix before the words “invalid verify switch.” The number 118 or hexadecimal 0x76, a Win32 GetLastError result, or the literal Windows constant points to Command Prompt or a Windows program. The prefixes MGR-00126 and DBA-00126 point to Oracle tooling.
Check the command context
- A black Command Prompt window, a
.bator.cmdfile, or a Windows application launching a shell indicates the Windows branch. - An Enterprise Manager job, SQL*DBA session, or Oracle administration script indicates the Oracle branch.
- If a third-party utility prints its own usage screen, it may have a VERIFY option unrelated to the built-in Windows command. Use that utility’s syntax rather than assuming Windows rules apply.

1. Capture the exact command
Copy the complete command line or identify the exact line in the batch file. Look for verify and the value immediately following it. Common invalid forms include a missing value where one is required, a value such as yes or true, an equals sign, or a slash-style option copied from another program.
Do not edit unrelated disk, storage, or driver settings at this stage. Error 118 describes an invalid parameter; it does not by itself report a failing device.
2. Display the current verify setting
Open Command Prompt and enter the command by itself:
verifyWith no value, verify displays the current verify-on-write state. This is a read-only check of the setting and is useful for confirming that you are using the Windows command interpreter.

4. Run the original command again
After setting the intended state, execute the original command exactly as before. If it now runs, the failure was the malformed VERIFY argument. If the same message returns, continue with the source of the command instead of changing hardware.
5. Repair a batch file or shortcut
Open the relevant .bat, .cmd, shortcut, scheduled-task action, or deployment script in a text editor and correct the VERIFY line. A line such as verify %1 can become invalid when the supplied variable is empty or contains an unsupported word. Replace the resulting argument with a deliberate on or off, or remove the line if the script does not need to change the setting.

Save a backup before editing a production script. If the command is generated by a build system or installer, change the template or invocation that creates the bad argument; editing a temporary copy will not prevent the next run from recreating the error.
6. Check whether another program owns the VERIFY option
Some utilities expose an option named VERIFY but parse it themselves. A program may require a form such as a documented command-line flag, while cmd.exe accepts only verify on and verify off. Read that program’s built-in help or version-matched manual and use its legal spelling and value. Do not prepend verify on to an application command unless the application documentation says to do so.
7. Reproduce with a minimal test
To separate a shell problem from an application problem, open a fresh Command Prompt and run:

If these commands work but the application still reports error 118, the application, wrapper script, or argument-building logic is supplying its own invalid value. Capture that exact invocation for the application vendor or administrator.

What Windows command forms are valid?
These are the complete forms documented for the Windows command:

Why does Windows still show the error after I corrected the command?
When the three documented Windows forms work interactively but the original job fails, the invalid text is usually being reintroduced by another layer. Trace the command in the order it is generated:
Inspect variable expansion
Review environment variables, task parameters, and script arguments that are concatenated after verify. An empty variable, trailing quote, or unexpected configuration value can turn a valid template into an invalid command. Log or echo the fully expanded line in a safe test environment so you can see what Command Prompt actually receives.
Check the shell that launches the command
A scheduled task, installer, service, or development tool may invoke a wrapper instead of the file you edited. Confirm the executable path and working directory, then inspect the wrapper’s arguments. A script written for a different Oracle release may emit a switch unavailable in the installed version.
