kbdclass.sys is Windows’ normal keyboard class driver, not automatically a virus or the cause of a crash. When a blue screen names it—often with DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xD1)—the failing code may actually be a keyboard, USB, Bluetooth, hotkey, filter, chipset or other third-party driver in the same kernel stack. Start by isolating the physical keyboard and USB path, then update or roll back the exact driver and the PC maker’s firmware packages. If crashes continue, collect a memory dump and inspect it with WinDbg; use Driver Verifier only for a specifically suspected driver because it can make Windows unstable. The sequence below covers the manual fixes, explains what the stop code means, and shows when hardware replacement or vendor support is justified.

What is kbdclass.sys, and why does it appear in a crash?

Microsoft documents KBDCLASS.sys as the keyboard class driver that provides common functionality for keyboards and keypads. In a typical input path, KBDHID.sys maps Human Interface Device (HID) keyboard usages to scan codes that the keyboard class driver understands, while HIDCLASS.sys connects HID clients to transports such as USB and Bluetooth.

Manufacturers can install filter drivers above the class driver. A gaming keyboard utility, hotkey service, remapping program or other vendor component may therefore be present in the same call stack even though the dump highlights kbdclass.sys. Microsoft also notes that a compliant keyboard generally does not need a separate vendor driver for basic operation.

A module name in a dump identifies a location where Windows detected the failure, not necessarily the original defect. In a Microsoft Community case, a Windows 11 dump named kbdclass.sys, but Microsoft Community Technical Support said the available information was insufficient to deduce the root cause and that advanced driver tracing might be required. Treat the name as a lead for investigation, not as proof that the Microsoft file is damaged.

What does DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (kbdclass.sys) mean?

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is bug check 0x000000D1. Microsoft defines it as a kernel-mode driver trying to access pageable or invalid memory while the interrupt request level (IRQL) is too high. Bad or freed pointers, or pageable code and data being used at elevated IRQL, are common technical patterns behind the stop.

The related IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL stop code, 0xA, is commonly associated with faulty or outdated drivers, memory problems or hardware issues. An unexpected restart can also result from a hardware device, its driver or other software. That is why replacing kbdclass.sys itself is rarely the correct first action.

Microsoft Learn gives broad estimates for stop errors: about 70% are attributed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code and 15% to cases where memory corruption prevents a useful analysis. Those figures are general estimates, not a diagnosis of your computer. The same documentation separately estimates that about 75% of stop errors in its Driver Verifier discussion are caused by faulty drivers; that figure belongs to that diagnostic context and should not be merged with the 70/10/5/15 breakdown.

What should I record before trying a fix?

Write down the exact stop-code text, the percentage or restart behavior shown on the blue screen, and when the crash happens. Timing often separates a physical connection problem from a software change.

  • Note whether the first crash followed a new keyboard, mouse, USB hub, Bluetooth adapter, docking station or other peripheral.
  • Record recent Windows, keyboard-utility, chipset, BIOS or firmware updates.
  • Check whether the crash occurs during typing, immediately after sign-in, when waking from sleep, during a game, or when a particular hotkey program starts.
  • Keep the exact date and stop code for each recurrence so a later dump can be matched to the event.

Microsoft’s stop-code guidance recommends reviewing the code and recent changes before choosing a remedy. This short record prevents you from undoing a working driver or blaming the wrong device.

How do I isolate the keyboard, USB and Bluetooth hardware?

Begin with reversible physical checks. A defective keyboard, cable, port, hub or wireless receiver can trigger errors in the input stack, and a cross-PC test is more informative than repeatedly reinstalling the same driver.

  1. Disconnect the keyboard. Shut down if the system is unstable, unplug a wired keyboard, or switch off a wireless model and remove its receiver. Reconnect it firmly and test again.
  2. Try another USB port. Prefer a port directly on the computer rather than one on a monitor, dock or hub. If the keyboard works on a different port, leave the hub or original port out of the setup while you investigate.
  3. Remove intermediate hubs. Connect the keyboard directly to the PC. A hub can add another controller or power path to the stack.
  4. Inspect the cable and power. Look for kinks, damaged plugs or intermittent contact. For wireless devices, replace or recharge batteries and reseat the receiver.
  5. Test with a known-good keyboard. A basic wired USB keyboard is useful for this isolation step because it removes wireless software and battery variables. It is a diagnostic substitute, not a driver cure.
  6. Test the suspect keyboard on another computer. If it fails there as well, the keyboard or its cable is a stronger suspect and replacement may be necessary. If it works elsewhere, return attention to the original PC’s drivers, firmware, ports or software.

Do not change several variables at once. Test after each connection change and record whether the blue screen returns; that gives the later dump analysis a clear hardware context.

How do I use Windows Update and Device Manager?

Install Microsoft’s available updates first, including optional driver updates, then inspect the keyboard device in Device Manager. Use rollback when the crash began immediately after a driver change rather than automatically installing a newer package.

Check Windows Update

  1. Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates, install the offered updates, and restart when requested.
  3. Open Advanced options and then Optional updates. Review driver updates that apply to the keyboard, USB, Bluetooth, chipset or other recently changed hardware.

Optional updates are not automatically installed on every Windows setup. Read the device name and version before applying one, especially on a work or gaming PC with a vendor-specific input utility.

Update or roll back in Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Keyboards. Also inspect Human Interface Devices, Bluetooth and Universal Serial Bus controllers if your keyboard uses those paths.
  3. Right-click the relevant device and choose Update driver. Let Windows search, or select the exact package supplied for your PC model when you have downloaded one from the manufacturer.
  4. If the crashes started after an update, open Properties, select the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver when that button is available.
  5. Restart and test the same workload that previously caused the stop.

If one device or vendor filter is strongly implicated, temporarily disable or uninstall that component as an isolation step. Record what you changed so you can restore it. Do not disable every keyboard or USB entry at once; you could remove your ability to control the desktop.

Which manufacturer drivers, BIOS and firmware should I install?

Use the support page for the exact computer model, not a generic package for a similar machine. Microsoft’s advanced guidance calls for current BIOS and firmware and recommends contacting the hardware vendor when a named driver or recent hardware or software change is involved.

  • Install the PC maker’s keyboard or hotkey utility only when your model requires it.
  • Apply the current chipset and USB-controller package offered for that model and Windows edition.
  • Install the manufacturer’s BIOS and device firmware updates according to its instructions. Keep the computer on reliable power during a BIOS update.
  • For a Bluetooth keyboard, update the computer’s Bluetooth package as well as the keyboard firmware when the manufacturer provides both.
  • Restart between major package groups so a failing component is easier to identify.

A vendor utility can be the filter above kbdclass, but it can also be required for special keys. If basic typing works after removing it, leave the utility uninstalled only long enough to confirm whether the blue screen stops; then check for a corrected release from the manufacturer.

How can Safe Mode or a clean boot reveal the culprit?

Safe Mode loads a restricted set of drivers and services, making it useful when normal startup crashes before you can change settings. A clean boot or a new local account can show whether a third-party service, filter or user profile is involved, although that result is an indication to confirm with logs and dumps rather than proof by itself.

Enter Safe Mode

  1. Open Settings and choose System > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. Press the key for Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking if you need network access.

In Safe Mode, remove a recently added keyboard utility, roll back a driver, or disable the specifically suspected device. If the crash still occurs with the keyboard disconnected, the keyboard itself is less likely to be the sole trigger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a clean environment as an isolation test

Disable non-Microsoft startup services and startup applications using Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure, then restart and test. Alternatively, create a new local user account and test there. If the crash disappears only in the clean boot or new account, a third-party service, filter or profile setting becomes more plausible. Re-enable items in groups, restarting after each group, until the failure returns; that narrows the suspect without permanently disabling unrelated software.

How do I collect and read a crash dump?

Recurring crashes need evidence rather than repeated guesses. Configure Windows to save an automatic memory dump, then use WinDbg to identify the module or service involved in the failing stack.

Enable an automatic memory dump

  1. Press Windows+R, type sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Advanced tab and select Settings under Startup and Recovery.
  3. Under System failure, keep Write an event to the system log enabled and choose Automatic memory dump in Write debugging information.
  4. Confirm the dump path and restart Windows.

Small dumps are stored in %SystemRoot%Minidump. Kernel, complete and automatic dumps use %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP. Keep enough free space for the selected dump; Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends maintaining roughly 10–15% free disk space.

Inspect the dump in WinDbg

  1. Install WinDbg from Microsoft and open the resulting .dmp file.
  2. Configure Microsoft’s public symbol server so function names resolve correctly.
  3. Run !analyze -v in the debugger command window.
  4. Inspect STACK_TEXT and the surrounding loaded modules. Look for a consistently repeated vendor driver, service or filter rather than assuming the first displayed name is guilty.
  5. Compare multiple dumps. A module that appears in the same failure pattern across separate crashes is stronger evidence than a one-off appearance.

Save the stop code, dump date, keyboard connection and recent changes with each analysis. If the stack remains ambiguous or memory is badly corrupted, provide the dumps and exact PC model to the computer or keyboard manufacturer or a qualified technician.

When should I use Driver Verifier?

Use Driver Verifier only when you have a specific suspicious or recently changed driver to test. Microsoft warns that verifying every driver at once can consume substantial CPU, cause additional crashes and make the system unusable; broad verification also produces noisy evidence.

  1. First create or confirm a dump and write down the driver you intend to test.
  2. Open Driver Verifier from the Start menu and choose the option to create standard settings.
  3. Select only the suspected third-party driver or small set of recently changed drivers, not all Microsoft drivers indiscriminately.
  4. Restart and reproduce the problem. Driver Verifier may deliberately trigger a more specific blue screen that identifies the offending driver.
  5. After collecting the new dump, turn verification off. Open Driver Verifier, choose Delete existing settings, and restart.

If Windows cannot reach the desktop, enter Safe Mode and disable Driver Verifier there. Do not leave it enabled during ordinary use after the diagnostic test.

What hardware and system checks should I run next?

If keyboard isolation and driver changes do not stop the crashes, investigate memory, the USB or Bluetooth controller and other hardware. A keyboard-named stop can be the visible symptom of broader memory corruption.

  • Run the PC manufacturer’s built-in hardware diagnostics, including memory and motherboard or USB tests when offered.
  • Use Windows Memory Diagnostic or the manufacturer’s recommended memory test and follow up on any error rather than continuing to troubleshoot drivers.
  • Check event logs around the restart for device, controller or power errors that coincide with the dump time.
  • Keep adequate free space on the system drive so Windows can write dumps and complete updates.
  • Disconnect newly added peripherals one at a time and test a known-good port or keyboard.

Contact the PC or keyboard vendor when a dump points to its driver, when a BIOS or firmware update is required, or when the physical device fails the cross-computer test. Hardware replacement is justified by repeatable failure on another PC, not merely by seeing the string kbdclass.sys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which kbdclass.sys remedies are safest and most informative?

The following comparison puts reversible isolation and evidence gathering ahead of stress tools. “Diagnostic value” describes what the step can distinguish; it does not guarantee a fix.

Remedy Safety Diagnostic value Scope Reversibility
Change USB port, remove hub, test another keyboard Very high; no software change Separates keyboard, cable, hub and port faults Keyboard and USB path Immediate
Windows Update or Device Manager update High; use model-appropriate packages Tests current Windows and device-driver compatibility Keyboard, HID, USB and Bluetooth drivers Rollback when available
Roll back or temporarily disable a named vendor component High if limited to the suspect device Tests a recent driver or filter directly Specific device or utility Enable or reinstall
PC-maker chipset, BIOS and firmware update Moderate; follow the model’s procedure Addresses platform and controller compatibility System firmware and hardware platform Varies by package
Safe Mode or clean boot High; configuration-only isolation Separates third-party services, filters and profiles Startup environment Restore startup settings
WinDbg dump analysis High; observation only Highest evidence quality for recurring crashes System-wide kernel stack Not applicable
Driver Verifier Low to moderate; can crash or block startup High for one targeted suspect Selected drivers Disable in normal or Safe Mode

What should I not do when kbdclass.sys is named?

  • Do not delete kbdclass.sys. It is a Windows-supplied class driver required by the keyboard input path; removing it can make input unavailable without addressing the triggering driver.
  • Do not download a replacement copy from a third-party site. The supported path is Windows Update, Device Manager, Safe Mode isolation, dump analysis, rollback or the hardware vendor’s package.
  • Do not assume the Microsoft module is the root cause. A vendor filter or another kernel driver can fail while kbdclass.sys is the visible location in the stack.
  • Do not run Driver Verifier against everything. Target a documented suspect and know how to disable it before starting.
  • Do not apply a BIOS or firmware package for a different model. Confirm the exact PC or keyboard model and Windows edition first.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, back up and restore drivers, and schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a 2-day free trial with no credit card before a subscription; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can kbdclass.sys itself be a virus?

KBDCLASS.sys is a normal Microsoft keyboard class driver used by Windows. The filename in a blue-screen report does not establish malware or file corruption; investigate the complete driver stack, recent software changes and dump evidence instead of deleting the file.

Will reinstalling my keyboard driver erase my custom key settings?

It can, depending on how the keyboard utility stores profiles and macros. Export profiles from the vendor utility first when that option exists, and record the current driver version so you can restore the working configuration if a rollback is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the crash happen only while gaming or using hotkeys?

Those activities may activate a vendor filter, macro service, overlay or higher USB polling workload that ordinary typing never exercises. Reproduce the crash with the utility disabled or in a clean boot, then compare the resulting dump with one from normal use.

What if the blue screen continues with no keyboard connected?

That result makes a keyboard-only defect less likely and shifts attention to USB or Bluetooth controllers, memory, chipset and other kernel drivers. Keep the dump, run the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics and seek vendor support if the stack remains unclear.
