KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED is Windows 11 bug check 0x0000001E. It means a kernel-mode program generated an exception that Windows could not catch, most often because of a faulty or incompatible driver, a recently changed service, hardware or memory trouble, BIOS incompatibility, or an IRQ conflict. The most reliable approach is to capture the stop-screen details, boot through Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) into Safe Mode, undo the newest driver or system change, run manufacturer hardware diagnostics, and only then use recovery options such as Startup Repair or System Restore. A driver name shown under “What failed” is an important lead, but it is not automatic proof that the driver is the sole cause.

What does KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED mean in Windows 11?

Microsoft defines bug check 0x1E this way: “The KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED bug check has a value of 0x0000001E. This indicates that a kernel-mode program generated an exception which the error handler did not catch.” The stop-code parameters include the exception code and the address where the exception occurred. You can read the official definition in Microsoft’s Bug Check 0x1E documentation.

Kernel-mode code runs with high privileges, so an unhandled exception can halt Windows rather than merely closing one application. The blue screen may identify a module or driver. Treat that name as evidence to investigate alongside the timing of the crash, Event Viewer entries, and hardware-test results; Microsoft notes that a listed driver is not automatically the complete explanation.

Which causes are documented?

  • Faulty, incompatible, or recently changed device drivers.
  • System services that conflict with Windows or with another driver.
  • Hardware that is incompatible, failing, or newly installed.
  • BIOS incompatibility or firmware changes.
  • Memory conflicts, including problems revealed by a manufacturer’s memory diagnostic.
  • Interrupt request (IRQ) conflicts between devices.

There is no authoritative Windows 11 percentage or frequency statistic for this stop code, so the appearance of the error on your PC must be diagnosed from its own evidence rather than from a claimed prevalence rate.

What should I record before changing anything?

Capture clues while the error is visible, or write them down immediately after the next restart. This prevents a later repair from erasing the sequence that points to the cause.

Record the stop-screen details

  • The exact text KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and the hexadecimal code 0x0000001E.
  • Anything shown after What failed, including a file name ending in .sys.
  • Whether the crash occurs during startup, sign-in, gaming, sleep or wake, connecting a device, or another repeatable action.
  • Whether Windows restarts successfully or loops back to another blue screen.

List changes made before the first crash

Write down the date and order of any driver installation, Windows update, BIOS or firmware update, new RAM, storage or USB device, graphics or audio hardware, and newly installed system utility. The newest change is a useful first suspect, but do not remove hardware or software solely because it was installed recently; confirm it against logs and tests.

Protect important data

If Windows still starts, copy irreplaceable files to another drive or cloud location before testing. If it does not start, avoid repeated resets or reinstalls until you have checked whether your files can be copied from a recovery environment or by using another computer. Microsoft’s recovery-options guide distinguishes repairs that preserve data from options that can remove apps or personal files.

How do I boot Windows 11 into Safe Mode after a blue screen?

Use WinRE’s Startup Settings: select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart, then press F4 for Safe Mode or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking. Microsoft explains the available modes in its Windows startup settings documentation.

What Safe Mode changes

Safe Mode loads only a limited set of files and drivers. That reduced set can let Windows start when a recently added driver or service cannot. Safe Mode with Networking adds network components, which is useful for downloading a manufacturer driver but also introduces more drivers; use plain Safe Mode unless networking is necessary.

If the recovery menu is not shown automatically

Use Windows’ recovery entry points that are available on your machine, such as the advanced restart option from the sign-in or Settings screen. If Windows cannot reach those screens, boot from Windows 11 recovery or installation media and choose the repair option rather than immediately installing Windows. The exact wording can differ by PC manufacturer and edition, but the target menu remains Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings.

How do I disable, roll back, or remove the suspect driver?

Once Safe Mode is running, work from the device named on the blue screen or the device changed immediately before the crashes. Microsoft’s stop-error guidance recommends disabling or removing a listed or recently added driver, then checking Windows and manufacturer sources for a corrected version.

  1. Open Device Manager. Right-click Start, choose Device Manager, and expand the category for the suspected device, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, storage controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  2. Inspect the device. Open Properties and review the General and Driver tabs. Note the provider, date, and version before making a change.
  3. Roll back when the option is available. On the Driver tab, choose Roll Back Driver if the button is active and the crash began after an update. Restart normally and test the action that previously caused the blue screen.
  4. Disable as a diagnostic. Choose Disable device when you need to test whether Windows can remain stable without that hardware. This can remove the device’s function temporarily, so do not disable a component you need for an essential backup or recovery operation.
  5. Uninstall a recently added driver. Select Uninstall device and, where offered, remove the driver package. Restart and allow Windows to use a compatible built-in driver or install a replacement from a trusted source.
  6. Check the System log. In normal Windows or Safe Mode, open Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, select System, and review errors and warnings at the crash time. Match timestamps and device names rather than treating every warning as causal.
  7. Test after one change. Reboot and reproduce the workload that triggered the stop. Changing several drivers at once destroys the evidence showing which change helped.

Microsoft’s broader stop-code troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the System log and using manufacturer diagnostics.

Where should I obtain a replacement driver?

Check Windows Update first. If Windows Update does not provide a fix, use the support page for the exact PC model or the component manufacturer’s site. Match the Windows 11 edition, hardware model, and architecture shown by the manufacturer. Generic third-party driver sites should not be your default source because they may provide an incorrect or modified package.

What if the blue screen names a Windows component?

A system file name can be the point at which Windows detected the failure rather than the original cause. Keep the name in your notes, then investigate the driver, service, update, and hardware that were active immediately before the crash. Do not delete a Windows system file to silence the message.

Could RAM, BIOS, or another hardware device be causing the crash?

Yes. Microsoft lists incompatible hardware, BIOS incompatibility, memory conflicts, and IRQ conflicts among possible causes. Run the PC or component manufacturer’s diagnostics before buying replacement parts, and retain the result with the date and test version if one is shown.

Memory checks

Use the diagnostic supplied by the PC or motherboard manufacturer, especially when crashes occur during demanding workloads, after a RAM upgrade, or at apparently random times. Test one configuration at a time when the manufacturer’s procedure allows it. If a test reports an error, verify the exact memory type and capacity supported by the model before replacing modules; DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, and a physically similar module can still be electrically unsuitable.

BIOS and firmware checks

Record the current BIOS version from the firmware setup screen or the manufacturer’s information utility. Compare it with the support page for the exact model and read the vendor’s recovery instructions before applying an update. A BIOS change can correct compatibility problems but can also make an unbootable PC harder to recover if interrupted, so use stable power and do not begin the process while Windows is repeatedly crashing.

Device and IRQ checks

Disconnect newly added nonessential USB, expansion, audio, network, or storage devices one at a time and test after each removal. If removing one device stops the crashes, reinstall its official driver and check for a firmware update before concluding that the hardware itself has failed. IRQ conflicts are uncommon but can appear when two devices or their drivers compete for the same interrupt resources; the device manufacturer’s diagnostic or support team can interpret that result.

What recovery option should I use if Windows still will not start?

Use the least disruptive option that matches your evidence. The choices below follow Microsoft’s Windows recovery options; menu names can vary slightly by Windows 11 build and PC manufacturer.

Option Where it runs Best fit Reversibility and data risk
Startup Repair WinRE Windows cannot complete startup and no single driver change is confirmed. Designed as an early, relatively low-disruption repair; still back up files first when possible.
Uninstall recent update WinRE or Windows recovery settings The first crash followed a Windows quality or feature update. Removes the selected update rather than all applications; record the update so it can be investigated later.
System Restore WinRE or Windows A restore point exists from before the driver, service, or update change. Reverses system files, drivers, and settings to that point; personal documents are normally not the target, but review the restore summary.
Recovery or installation media Booted from USB or other media The internal recovery environment is unavailable or damaged. Provides repair tools and installation choices; the media itself does not fix the stop code automatically.
Reset this PC WinRE or Windows Repairs and targeted removals have failed and you accept a larger change. Depending on the selected mode, apps and settings, and possibly personal files, are removed. Confirm the backup and reset choice carefully.
Reinstall Windows Installation media Persistent corruption remains after hardware and driver checks, or a clean software state is required. Most disruptive; plan for application reinstalls, activation details, drivers, and verified backups.

How should I proceed through WinRE?

  1. Enter Troubleshoot and open Advanced options.
  2. Try Startup Repair when startup itself is failing.
  3. If the timing points to an update, choose the option to uninstall the recent quality or feature update.
  4. Use System Restore when a suitable restore point predates the first crash.
  5. Use Command Prompt only when you have a specific, documented repair instruction for your PC; random commands can make recovery harder.
  6. Reserve Reset this PC or a reinstall for cases where the lower-disruption options and hardware checks have not solved the problem.

How do I choose the least risky repair path?

Match the repair to the boot state, the change that preceded the crash, and the strength of your evidence. This avoids resetting Windows when a reversible driver rollback would have solved the problem.

Evidence you have Preferred first action Why
A named device driver and a crash immediately after its update Safe Mode, roll back or uninstall that driver Directly tests the most reversible explanation.
Crash began after a Windows update but no device is named WinRE, uninstall the recent update Reverses the change without replacing the whole operating system.
Random crashes, failed memory test, or errors after a RAM change Stop software changes and resolve the hardware finding A reinstall cannot repair defective or incompatible memory.
Normal Windows unavailable, but WinRE works Startup Repair, then System Restore or update removal Uses built-in recovery before external media or reset.
WinRE unavailable or damaged Boot trusted Windows recovery or installation media Restores access to the same repair tools from outside the internal installation.
Crashes continue after driver, update, restore, and diagnostic checks Preserve evidence and escalate to the PC manufacturer or an authorized repair provider Model-specific firmware and board-level faults may require equipment or documentation you do not have.

What information should I give support if the crashes continue?

Preserve any minidumps Windows created instead of deleting them during cleanup. Keep a short timeline containing the first crash date, each driver or update change, the exact stop code, the “What failed” module, Event Viewer timestamps, the PC model, BIOS version, connected hardware, and every diagnostic result. Include whether Safe Mode was stable and which recovery actions were attempted.

Contact the PC or component manufacturer when a diagnostic identifies a fault, the BIOS appears incompatible, or the machine remains unstable after the documented driver and recovery steps. An authorized repair provider is appropriate when the system cannot stay powered long enough to test, when board-level or memory faults are suspected, or when preserving data requires specialized handling.

How can I reduce the chance of another KMODE crash?

  • Create backups before BIOS, firmware, driver, or major Windows changes.
  • Install drivers from Windows Update or the exact hardware manufacturer, and keep a record of the previous version so a rollback is possible.
  • Keep the PC model, BIOS version, and recovery-media instructions available offline.
  • After installing a driver or hardware component, test normal startup, sleep and wake, networking, audio, graphics, and the workload that matters to you before making another system change.
  • Do not ignore a recurring blue screen simply because one restart succeeds; intermittent memory, firmware, or driver faults can return under a particular workload.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and includes an app-crash log and system-load and cleanup features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription, complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no utility repairs every crash.

Frequently asked questions

Can a KMODE crash damage my personal files?

The stop screen is a protective halt, not a statement that your files have been erased. Unsaved work can be lost, and repeated failed starts can complicate access, so copy important data before using reset or reinstall options and keep a second backup.

Should I keep using the computer if Safe Mode works?

Use Safe Mode for diagnosis, not as a permanent operating mode. Its limited drivers can hide the component that fails during normal use, so return to normal Windows only after testing the suspected driver or hardware change.

Is the “What failed” file name always the bad driver?

No. Windows reports where it detected the unhandled exception, which may be downstream from the original conflict. Compare the name with recent changes, System-log timestamps, and diagnostics before removing anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a special USB drive to repair Windows 11?

You need recovery or installation media only when the internal WinRE tools cannot be reached or are damaged. Media supplies a way to open repair tools or reinstall Windows; it does not itself identify or repair every KMODE cause.

When is replacing RAM justified?

Replace memory after a repeatable manufacturer diagnostic failure or a confirmed compatibility problem, and verify the exact module specification for the PC or motherboard. A blue screen by itself is not enough evidence to purchase DDR4 or DDR5 replacement modules.
