First identify what “lag” means: low FPS and stuttering require graphics or system fixes, while high ping, packet loss, and rubber-banding require network troubleshooting. Check Epic’s service status before changing files or buying hardware, then work through the least destructive fix for your symptom.
Identify the type of lag
| Symptom | Likely cause | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Choppy visuals or a falling FPS counter | GPU/CPU load, drivers, settings, heat, or background applications | Enable FPS monitoring and lower graphics quality |
| Brief freezes when entering areas or during the first match | DirectX 12 shader compilation or a damaged shader cache | Play several matches before clearing the cache |
| High ping or sudden ping spikes | Wi-Fi, ISP routing, congestion, or server region | Enable Net Debug Stats and test Ethernet |
| Players teleporting or characters snapping backward | Packet loss or an unstable connection | Check packet-loss indicators and router behavior |
| Delayed controls while FPS remains stable | V-Sync, display latency, controller settings, or network delay | Compare V-Sync and network readings |
| Late textures or freezes after extended play | VRAM pressure, overheating, storage, or drivers | Check temperatures, clock speeds, and free storage |
Epic defines ping, or latency, as the round-trip time for data to travel between your device and Fortnite’s servers, measured in milliseconds. A stable FPS counter does not rule out packet loss, and changing graphics settings will not repair a poor network route.

Check Fortnite for a post-update issue
Before troubleshooting locally, check the Epic Games Public Status page and the Fortnite support hub. Also check Fortnite Status and official community-issues reports for problems that began with the same update.
The timing may suggest that an update caused the problem, but it does not prove that every player has the same issue. If many players report identical stuttering, crashes, or server instability and your local tests are normal, waiting for an Epic workaround or hotfix may be the only effective solution.

Quick fixes for every platform
- Exit Fortnite completely.
- Close and reopen the Epic Games Launcher or console game session.
- Restart the PC or console.
- Install pending Fortnite and system updates.
- Stop downloads, cloud backups, streaming, and other heavy network activity.
- Test more than one match in the same mode and matchmaking region.
- Check whether other games have the same problem.
Restarting is a useful diagnostic step because it clears temporary processes and loads pending system changes, but it is not a guaranteed repair.
How to tell FPS lag from network lag
In Fortnite, open the upper-right menu, select Settings, open the Game UI tab, set Net Debug Stats to On, and select Apply. Epic says the network details appear in the upper-left corner. Menu wording can vary slightly between builds.
- Low FPS with normal ping: investigate graphics, drivers, CPU load, thermals, shaders, and background software.
- Stable FPS with high ping or packet loss: troubleshoot the connection.
- Both FPS and ping worsen: check overheating, downloads, background load, and possible service problems.
- Only one mode or region is affected: suspect a Fortnite server or matchmaking issue.
Fix FPS drops and stuttering on PC
1. Verify Fortnite’s files
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Find Fortnite, then select its three-dot menu or right-click it.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
Verification can take several minutes. It may repair damaged or incomplete installation files and is safer to try before reinstalling. It will not fix overheating, ISP routing, or a server-side bug. See Epic’s file-verification guidance.

Epic identifies graphics-driver problems as a possible cause of severe hitching or crashes after an update. Download drivers directly from the manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Restart afterward if prompted.

The newest driver is not always the best driver. If the problem began after a driver update rather than after Fortnite updated, try the previous stable driver instead.
3. Confirm that Fortnite uses the dedicated GPU
- Open Windows Settings.
- Select System → Display → Graphics.
- Add
FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exeif necessary. - Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
- Restart Fortnite.
Laptop menus vary by Windows version. If Windows’ setting does not help, check the equivalent Fortnite profile in the NVIDIA or AMD control panel. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling may also be available, but not on every system. Epic’s current PC guidance is available here.
4. Use a controlled graphics test
Record your original settings, then test:
- Quality preset: Low
- 3D Resolution: 100%
- V-Sync: Off while testing
- FPS limit: a stable value your system can maintain
Test Performance Mode or another rendering mode only after establishing a baseline. Increase settings one at a time. Low settings do not automatically produce the lowest input delay: a stable frame rate with consistent frame times can feel better than an uncapped rate with repeated spikes. V-Sync may reduce tearing but can add perceived latency.

5. Check power, overlays, and background applications
While testing, use Windows Best performance or High performance power mode, turn Game Mode on, and close unnecessary applications. Xbox Game Bar, Delivery Optimization downloads, Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, recording, and monitoring overlays can all be tested with temporarily disabled. These are troubleshooting tests, not permanent requirements. High-performance power modes can increase heat, fan noise, and battery drain.

6. Check overheating and throttling
Plug a laptop into AC power, keep vents clear, and never play on bedding or another soft surface. Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures and look for clock-speed drops at the same time as FPS drops. Clean accessible vents and fans, but do not open a warranty-sealed device without checking the manufacturer’s terms.
7. Handle DirectX 12 shader stutter carefully
After an update, driver change, or rendering-mode change, DirectX 12 may stutter while it compiles new shaders. The first match or newly encountered areas can be affected temporarily. Play several matches before deleting anything if the stutter gradually improves.
If stutter is severe or keeps returning, Epic documents clearing the DirectX shader cache. Its documented NVIDIA-oriented procedure requires closing Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher, opening %appdata%, navigating through the local AppData area, and removing files from the NVIDIA DXCache location. Files in use may need to be skipped. Cache locations differ between NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Windows versions, and drivers, so use Epic’s current DirectX 12 instructions rather than deleting a universal folder. The first match afterward may stutter again while the cache is rebuilt.
Epic also lists -d3d12 -es31 under a workaround for certain DirectX 12 graphics problems. It is not a universal Performance Mode command. Do not add random launch arguments from unofficial guides.

8. Reset Fortnite’s local settings only if needed
For persistent post-update crashes or damaged settings, back up and then delete this file:
%localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClientGameUserSettings
Epic says Fortnite recreates it at launch. This resets graphics and other local settings, so do not delete the entire Saved folder as a first-line fix. Follow Epic’s configuration-reset guidance.
9. Reinstall only after the lower-risk steps
If verification, drivers, settings, thermals, and caches do not help, reinstall Fortnite. Trying another drive makes sense only when storage corruption, insufficient free space, or drive errors are suspected. Epic’s broader PC troubleshooting sequence progresses from verification and drivers to background applications, reinstalling, drive checks, and hardware support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix high ping, packet loss, and rubber-banding
1. Measure the connection
Keep Net Debug Stats visible and note ping, packet loss, and whether the problem is constant or intermittent. On Windows, Epic’s example for the North America East endpoint is:
Best Value

ping ping-nae.ds.on.epicgames.com -n 50
Use the endpoint matching your region; Epic lists hosts for North America, Europe, Oceania, Brazil, Asia, and the Middle East in its latency guide. Command Prompt results are not identical to in-match performance. A normal average can still hide spikes or packet loss, and the test cannot isolate Fortnite’s exact game-server route.
2. Improve local network stability
- Use Ethernet where possible. It often reduces Wi-Fi-related spikes, but cannot overcome distant servers or poor ISP routing.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Update router firmware.
- Test 5 GHz Wi-Fi near the router and 2.4 GHz at longer range.
- Move the router away from obstructions, closets, and basements.
- Check whether another router or access point produces a different result.
5 GHz is usually faster and less congested nearby but has shorter range. 2.4 GHz travels farther but is often more congested. Mesh Wi-Fi can improve coverage while adding another wireless hop; it is not automatically better for competitive play.
3. Stop competing traffic
Pause game and Windows updates, cloud backups, video streaming, large uploads, VPNs, and other traffic-management rules while testing. A VPN is not a default lag fix: it may improve a poor ISP route in some locations, but it can also increase latency, packet loss, or matchmaking unpredictability.
Do not change matchmaking regions blindly. A distant region may show a temporarily better number in one test while producing worse real-world gameplay.
Fix Fortnite lag on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch
- Search the exact error message if Fortnite displays one.
- Install Fortnite updates.
- Install PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch system updates.
- Clear the platform cache using the procedure for your exact model.
- Power-cycle the console.
- Reinstall Fortnite only if the earlier steps fail.
- Contact platform support if the issue continues.
Epic’s console troubleshooting guidance includes platform-specific reinstall paths: on PlayStation, highlight Fortnite, press Options, choose Delete, then reinstall; on Xbox Series X|S, use My Games & Apps → Games, highlight Fortnite, press Menu, and select Uninstall; on Switch, highlight Fortnite, press +, choose Manage Software, then Delete Software.
Cache procedures differ by platform and model. Do not delete saved data unless the official platform instructions specifically require it. PC driver, Windows power-plan, and PC shader-cache fixes do not apply to consoles. If console FPS is stable but ping is high, reinstalling Fortnite is unlikely to repair the network path.
What not to do
- Do not treat all stutter as high ping.
- Do not clear shader caches immediately if the first matches are improving normally.
- Do not use registry cleaners, random driver-updater utilities, or unofficial launch arguments.
- Do not buy a gaming VPN before testing Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and ISP routing.
- Do not reinstall before verifying files and checking drivers.
- Do not delete random Fortnite folders or the entire
Saveddirectory. - Do not buy a router, cooling pad, or PC upgrade until the bottleneck is demonstrated.
When Fortnite is probably the problem
A Fortnite-side regression becomes more likely when the issue began immediately after a patch, affects many players, appears only in one mode or region, and does not occur in other games. Normal temperatures, stable local FPS, and no packet loss further weaken the case for your hardware or connection. Check Epic’s status and issue channels, save your diagnostic details, and wait for an official workaround when the evidence points to the game itself.
