“Error DS unwilling to perform” is LDAP result code 53 (hexadecimal 0x35). It means the directory server received the request but declined to process it; it does not identify one specific fault and does not automatically mean that a password is wrong. Microsoft also exposes the condition as ERROR_DS_UNWILLING_TO_PERFORM (Win32 error 8245, hexadecimal 0x2035) and, through ADSI, as HRESULT 0x80072035.

The reliable fix is to use the complete diagnostic message, the operation that failed, the target distinguished name (DN), the directory product and version, and the connection’s authentication state. Then check the relevant cause: an unauthenticated or unauthorized request, an OpenLDAP backend that cannot perform the operation, a naming context or referral problem, ForgeRock DS lockdown mode, or an Active Directory schema and object constraint.

What does LDAP error 53 mean?

LDAP result 53 is a generic refusal. The server is reachable enough to return an LDAP response, but it is unwilling or unable to carry out the requested operation under its current rules. The number alone cannot tell you whether the problem is authentication, authorization, data placement, backend capability, server state, or an Active Directory constraint.

Identifier Representation Meaning
LDAP result 53 unwillingToPerform; the server declines the request
LDAP hexadecimal 0x35 The protocol result in hexadecimal
Win32 ERROR_DS_UNWILLING_TO_PERFORM, error 8245 (0x2035) Microsoft’s directory-service mapping
ADSI HRESULT 0x80072035 The COM/ADSI form commonly shown by Windows applications

Because result 53 is deliberately broad, treat the diagnostic text supplied with the response as the important clue. A message such as “no global superior knowledge” points to a different remedy than “the connection has not been authenticated,” even though both use result 53.

What should I record before changing anything?

Capture the complete response while the failure is reproducible. Do not copy only “unwilling to perform”; preserve the operation, DN, server identity and every piece of server-supplied detail.

  • Exact identifiers: record decimal result 53, hexadecimal 0x35, and any Windows or ADSI code shown by the client.
  • Operation: note whether the failure occurred during bind, search, add, modify, delete, rename, or an extended operation.
  • Target DN: copy the full distinguished name, including its naming context, rather than only the common name.
  • Server implementation and version: distinguish OpenLDAP, Active Directory, ForgeRock Directory Services (DS), or another product. Their result-53 rules are not interchangeable.
  • Diagnostic data: save the complete text, including any server-specific data code, referral information, or explanation.
  • Connection state: establish whether the connection was anonymous, had completed a bind, and was authorized for the requested action.

This record prevents a common mistake: applying an OpenLDAP fix to an Active Directory constraint, or treating an authentication refusal as a bad-password problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I verify authentication and authorization?

First prove that the connection completed the required bind and that the bound identity is allowed to perform the operation. A client can reach a server and still issue its add, modify, delete or rename request before authentication has completed.

Confirm that the bind really completed

Check the client’s sequence of responses. The bind must return success before a request that requires an authenticated identity is sent. If the client silently falls back to anonymous access, the following operation may receive result 53 even though the user entered credentials.

ForgeRock documents a representative diagnostic: “Rejecting the requested operation because the connection has not been authenticated.” When that wording appears, correct the bind sequence or credentials handling before investigating schema or naming contexts.

Check permissions separately from authentication

A successful bind identifies the connection; it does not grant every directory privilege. Verify that the bound account has the rights required for the specific target and operation. For example, permission to search does not necessarily permit an add, modify, delete or rename. If the server reports an authorization-specific result rather than 53, follow that result instead of forcing this diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retest with the same identity and DN

Use the identical server endpoint, bind identity and target DN when retesting. Changing several variables at once can hide the actual cause. If an administrative identity succeeds while the application identity fails, compare permissions and policy rather than assuming the original DN was malformed.

Could an OpenLDAP backend be unable to perform the operation?

Yes. OpenLDAP returns unwilling to perform when the backend that holds the target entry does not support the requested operation. The server can therefore be healthy and the DN valid while the selected backend still refuses an add, modify, delete or other write.

Check which backend owns the target

Identify the configured database or backend that contains the target entry. Confirm that the operation is implemented there, not merely that the server accepts the protocol request. Direct the request to a backend that supports the operation, or change the request to one the configured backend is designed to handle.

Watch for the password backend

OpenLDAP’s password backend is search-only. It is willing to perform searches but returns unwilling to perform for all other operations. Do not treat that backend as a general-purpose write database: a password lookup can work while an attempted add, modify, delete or rename consistently fails with result 53.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the failure pattern as a clue

  • If searches succeed but every write against the same backend returns 53, suspect backend capability.
  • If only one operation fails, compare that operation with the backend’s documented support rather than changing credentials.
  • If an alternate backend holding equivalent data accepts the operation, the refusal is tied to backend selection or capability.

How do I fix “no global superior knowledge”?

“No global superior knowledge” usually means the server cannot find a configured database or referral responsible for the target DN. This is a naming-context or routing problem, not a password problem.

Verify the target DN and suffix

For add, delete, modify and rename, check every RDN and the suffix beneath it. Compare the target with the naming contexts the server actually owns. A typo in the entry name, a wrong domain component, or a request sent to the wrong directory partition can place the target outside every configured database.

Check server configuration

OpenLDAP identifies incorrect entry names and incorrect server configuration as likely causes. Confirm that the intended database suffix is configured on the server handling the request and that the target is not being sent to a listener backed by a different configuration.

Check referrals for external naming contexts

If the target belongs to another directory service, the server needs an applicable referral or a default referral path. A missing referral leaves the server without “global superior knowledge” and can produce result 53. Correct the referral or send the request directly to the server that owns the naming context.

Recheck rename boundaries

A rename can involve both the current and new parent. Validate that the destination DN is also inside a naming context the server owns or can refer to. A source entry that is valid locally does not make every destination valid.

Could ForgeRock DS lockdown mode cause result 53?

Yes. ForgeRock Directory Services lockdown mode rejects normal requests with result 53. In that state, requests from root users over loopback connections are accepted, while ordinary client traffic is refused regardless of otherwise correct credentials or DNs.

Identify lockdown before retrying

Use the server’s administrative status information and diagnostic text to determine whether lockdown is active. Repeatedly retrying the application request will not leave lockdown mode or change its access rule.

Use the documented administrative task

Enter or leave lockdown with the product’s documented lockdown task and the required administrative bind. Perform the task from the permitted root-and-loopback context, then retest the original operation from the intended client. Do not weaken unrelated access controls merely to make one request succeed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Active Directory rules can return unwillingToPerform?

Active Directory uses result 53 for multiple operation-specific constraints involving schema, parent objects, object classes, moves and renames. The same code can therefore appear for requests that are authenticated and authorized but violate directory rules.

Schema and object-class checks

Compare an add or modify request with the target object class and its required and permitted attributes. An attribute that is not allowed for the object class, a missing required value, or an object type that cannot be created beneath the selected parent can cause a refusal.

Parent and hierarchy checks

Verify that the parent DN exists, is the correct type for the child, and permits the requested child object. A syntactically valid DN can still violate the parent-child rules enforced by Active Directory.

Move and rename checks

For moves and renames, compare both the source and destination containers, naming rules and object constraints. A request can fail even when a simple read of the source object works. Preserve the extended diagnostic data; it is often the only way to identify which rule rejected the operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the server’s extended data

Microsoft’s Active Directory Technical Specification lists several schema, parent, object, move and rename conditions that map to unwillingToPerform. Treat the extended data and event information as authoritative for the particular request instead of assuming every result 53 has the same fix.

How should I troubleshoot by operation?

The failed LDAP operation narrows the likely causes. Use this branch after recording the full response.

Bind

Check whether the client actually completed the required authentication method and whether it accidentally sent a later request on an unauthenticated connection. A bind failure may use a different LDAP result for invalid credentials; result 53 on a later operation often indicates the connection state rather than the password itself.

Search

Confirm that the search base is within a naming context the server owns or can refer. If searches work against one suffix but return result 53 against another, compare backend selection and referral configuration. In OpenLDAP, a password backend is expected to support searches even though it rejects writes.

Add

Verify the parent DN, naming context, object class and required attributes. Then confirm that the selected backend supports writes and that the bound identity can create the object. A missing parent, wrong suffix, unsupported backend or Active Directory object constraint can each produce a refusal.

Modify

Check that the target exists, the attribute is permitted by its object class, the value format meets the server’s rules, and the backend implements modification. Compare a failing attribute change with a harmless read of the same entry to separate data rules from connectivity.

Delete

Confirm that the target DN is owned by the server, that the identity can delete it, and that hierarchy or object-protection rules do not prohibit deletion. If the DN is outside the configured suffix, investigate referrals and “no global superior knowledge.”

Rename or move

Validate both the current and destination DNs, including naming contexts and parent object rules. Check whether the operation crosses a boundary the backend or directory implementation does not support. Active Directory may apply additional object and naming constraints even when the source entry is readable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extended operation

Identify the exact extension and server implementation before changing configuration. Result 53 for an extension can indicate that the server does not support that request in its current state, but the numeric result alone does not establish which capability is missing.

How is LDAP error 53 different from nearby errors?

Comparing result codes prevents a generic refusal from being misdiagnosed as a credential, permission or network failure.

Condition How it differs from result 53 What to check
Invalid credentials Microsoft maps invalid credentials to a separate LDAP result and error mapping. Recheck the bind identity, secret and authentication sequence.
Insufficient rights A distinct authorization result indicates that the identity lacks permission. Review access controls for the exact operation and DN.
Constraint violation A separate result commonly points directly to a data or schema constraint. Inspect required attributes, syntax and object rules.
No such object A distinct result indicates that the referenced entry cannot be found. Verify the DN, parent and naming context.
Unwilling to perform Result 53 is a broad server refusal that can overlap several implementation-specific conditions. Use the operation, product, DN, bind state and diagnostic text to select the fix.

A network outage normally prevents an LDAP response altogether. When the server returns result 53, the connection reached a directory service capable of answering; investigate the request and server policy before replacing network hardware or resetting passwords.

What should I do if the error persists?

  1. Reproduce once with logging enabled. Capture the full response without editing out server data.
  2. Reduce the request. Test the same bind and DN with the smallest operation that distinguishes authentication, routing and capability, such as a read before a write.
  3. Compare environments. Note whether the identical request is sent to OpenLDAP, Active Directory or ForgeRock DS; do not assume their result-53 behavior is identical.
  4. Check configuration ownership. Verify the suffix, backend, referral and lockdown state on the server that actually receives the connection.
  5. Validate the directory rule. For Active Directory, compare object class, parent, attribute, move and rename requirements. For OpenLDAP, verify backend support and naming-context routing.
  6. Escalate with a complete case. Provide the server product and version, operation, target DN, bind state, exact result codes and full diagnostic text. Include whether the request is anonymous, authenticated or authorized, while removing secrets.

Do not repeatedly retry a write while changing credentials, suffixes and server endpoints at the same time. Controlled comparisons make it possible to tell an authentication problem from a backend limitation or a directory rule.

Can a client-side repair utility fix LDAP result 53?

As an optional shortcut on a Windows computer, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, tune settings that contribute to CPU, RAM and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no utility repairs every directory-server refusal. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category lasting at least two days before a paid subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LDAP error 53 the same as a wrong password?

No. Microsoft assigns invalid credentials a different LDAP result and error mapping. Result 53 can occur after a successful bind when the requested operation is unsupported, routed to the wrong naming context, blocked by lockdown mode or rejected by directory rules.

Does result 53 prove that the LDAP server is offline?

No. A result-53 response means a directory service answered the request and declined it. An offline or unreachable server generally produces a connection or transport failure instead of an LDAP result.

What does 0x80072035 mean in a Windows application?

It is the ADSI HRESULT representation of LDAP unwillingToPerform. Translate it back to LDAP result 53, then inspect the operation and server diagnostic text rather than treating the HRESULT as a separate fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can an LDAP search work while an update fails?

Some backends deliberately support reads but not writes. OpenLDAP’s password backend is search-only, so searches can succeed while add, modify, delete and rename requests return unwilling to perform.

What information should I send to a directory administrator?

Send the server product and version, operation, full target DN, authentication state, decimal and hexadecimal result, any Windows or ADSI mapping, and the complete diagnostic text. Remove passwords, tokens and other secrets before sharing logs.
