How to Fix Low Engagement in a University Marketing Game

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Low participation in a university marketing game is usually a design problem before it is a motivation problem. Start with a short orientation and device check, give teams several ungraded practice rounds, assign visible roles and deadlines, and require a prediction before every submission. After each round, show the results, have teams explain one success and one miss, and finish with a structured debrief. Use a live, asynchronous or hybrid format according to your coaching and scheduling needs—not because one mode is universally better.

Diagnose the real engagement failure

“Students are disengaged” can describe several different breakdowns. A team that never logs in has a different problem from a team that submits decisions without discussion, and both differ from a team that plays actively but cannot explain its results. Identify the failure before changing the game or grading scheme.

  • Access friction: students cannot find the login, do not know which device or browser is supported, or have not completed the tutorial.
  • Decision uncertainty: students do not understand what the controls mean, so they wait for a confident teammate to choose.
  • Unclear accountability: the team has no owner for research, finance, promotion, recording decisions or submitting on time.
  • Invisible learning: the game reports a score but does not show how a segment, price or promotion produced that result.
  • Social or scheduling friction: one meeting time excludes students, or asynchronous teams have no firm handoff deadline.
  • Low perceived stakes: students cannot see how a round connects to course concepts or assessment.

Track these symptoms separately. Completion rate, on-time decisions, discussion contributions, decision-log quality, debrief attendance and a brief confidence pulse will tell you more than a final leaderboard alone.

Remove friction before students play

The first session should feel like an orientation, not an emergency help desk. Harvard Business Publishing’s guidance for its Managing Segments and Customers simulation recommends setting expectations, assigning preparation, checking systems and devices, setting time limits, observing breakout rooms and reviewing results together in a debrief. Follow the same sequence for any platform.

Give students a one-page launch brief

Publish one page in the learning-management system at least several days before the first scored round. Include:

  • the game’s purpose and the course outcomes it supports;
  • the exact login link, account-creation steps and tutorial deadline;
  • supported devices, browsers, headphones and network requirements;
  • the team list, communication channel and time zone;
  • the decision deadline, late-submission policy and what counts toward assessment;
  • the location of technical help and the instructor’s question channel; and
  • the result students must bring to the debrief, such as a screenshot or exported report.

Do not scatter these details across email, slides and chat. One canonical page reduces the number of students who stop before making a first decision.

Run a technical rehearsal

  1. Ask every student to sign in and complete the tutorial before the first team meeting.
  2. Have each team open its scenario, confirm that all members can see the same decisions and identify the submit button and deadline.
  3. Test the instructor view, breakout-room links, screen sharing and result export.
  4. Provide a non-graded “help” decision or sandbox submission so an accidental click cannot damage a scored round.
  5. Record a short screen capture showing the path from login to submitted decision; caption it for students who cannot attend live.

Keep one support channel for access questions. Answering a recurring question publicly prevents the same interruption in every team room.

Build a low-risk practice runway

Competition exposes knowledge gaps; it rarely fixes them. Start with several ungraded or very low-stakes rounds in which students can experiment with the controls, read reports and recover from a poor decision.

Use four rounds as a starting point, not a law

Capsim describes an instructor practice sequence of “four practice rounds before the simulation competition actually starts,” intended to let students “fail, but try and experiment and learn way before we get into any type of competition.” Those are attributed statements from Capsim’s instructor article, not evidence that four is an optimal number for every course. Use four when the platform and timetable allow it, then adjust based on completion, confidence and decision-log quality.

A practice runway should change what students do, not merely repeat the same tutorial:

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed
  1. Orientation round: locate segments, reports, controls and submission status. Do not grade the outcome.
  2. Single-variable round: change one major lever, such as price or promotion, and predict its effect.
  3. Team-process round: use assigned roles and a decision log; grade completion rather than performance.
  4. Interpretation round: compare the prediction with actual KPIs and write a short explanation before competition begins.

Release the leaderboard only after the practice runway. A public ranking too early turns a learning error into a reputational threat and encourages safe imitation.

Make every student’s contribution visible

Teams participate more consistently when “the team” is not treated as one anonymous player. Assign roles for each round and rotate them so that a specialist does not become a permanent gatekeeper.

Suggested rotating roles

  • Consumer-insight lead: identifies the priority segment, need and evidence from the dashboard.
  • Finance and KPI checker: verifies budget, margin, forecast and the metric the team expects to move.
  • Strategy and positioning lead: converts the insight into a value proposition and competitive response.
  • Creative or promotion lead: selects the message, channel and promotional action that fit the segment.
  • Recorder and spokesperson: completes the decision log, submits on time and explains the result in the debrief.

For teams of four, combine strategy with creative; for teams of three, combine finance with recording. Rotate the roles after each round. Give a quieter student a defined deliverable—one segment insight, one KPI check or one paragraph in the log—rather than simply asking everyone to “participate.”

Require a short decision log

A log makes reasoning assessable without grading every click. Require one entry before submission:

Target segment: …
Objective for this round: …
Decision (product, price, place, promotion or other lever): …
Expected KPI movement and direction: …
Evidence used: …
Owner and submission time: …

After results are released, add two lines: “What worked and why?” and “What missed and what will we change?” Keep the form short enough to complete in five minutes.

Show the causal loop from decision to outcome

Students disengage when the game feels like a guessing contest. Before submitting, require each team to name its target audience, objective, decision and expected KPI movement. After the round, display the actual movement beside the prediction. The contrast is the learning event.

Use a prediction-first submission gate

  1. Select the target segment and write the customer problem or opportunity.
  2. State one measurable objective, such as improving conversion, share or contribution margin.
  3. List the decisions that should cause the change: positioning, product, price, place and promotion where the simulation supports the 7Ps.
  4. Write the expected direction and approximate size of the KPI movement. A directional estimate is sufficient when the game does not provide a forecasting tool.
  5. Submit the game decisions and the prediction together.

Do not allow a post-result explanation to replace the pre-result hypothesis. The prediction prevents hindsight bias and gives the instructor something concrete to coach.

Use the report as evidence, not a score reveal

When results arrive, show the relevant customer, competitor and KPI views. Ask teams to identify one assumption supported by the data and one assumption contradicted by it. Require them to cite the segment, metric or competitor move they used. Pearson’s MyMarketingExperience 2.0 follows this identify–adapt–decide–compete–review cycle across eight rounds, including target-audience, strategy, press-release and 7Ps decisions.

Choose live, asynchronous or hybrid delivery deliberately

Delivery mode should match the kind of support students need and the schedule they actually have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Mode Best fit Controls needed
Synchronous First-time players, complex scenarios, rapid coaching and a same-session debrief Fixed round timer, breakout-room observation, visible help channel and a backup plan for connection failures
Asynchronous team play Distributed schedules, working students and courses spanning time zones Firm completion deadline, shared decision log, minimum team check-in and a later live debrief
Hybrid Technical orientation and debrief live, decision work completed on flexible schedules Recorded tutorial, calendarized handoffs, one submission owner and attendance at the evidence-based debrief

Harvard Business Publishing documents both synchronous sessions and asynchronous team sessions followed by a live debrief for Managing Segments and Customers. The transferable principle is not the platform; it is the deadline and the follow-up conversation. An asynchronous round without a debrief becomes a solitary score chase, while a live round without preparation consumes class time fixing logins.

Facilitate each round with a repeatable cadence

A predictable cadence reduces cognitive load and gives students a reason to return.

  1. Brief: explain the market event, the decision window and the KPI that matters this round.
  2. Plan: teams assign roles, inspect evidence and complete the prediction section of the log.
  3. Decide: teams enter their choices while the instructor visits rooms or monitors the discussion channel.
  4. Submit: the recorder verifies that all required decisions and the prediction are saved before the deadline.
  5. Reveal: release results together so teams can compare outcomes under the same information conditions.
  6. Explain: each team prepares one success, one miss and one next-round change.

During live play, observe the reasoning process rather than giving away the correct move. Ask “Which segment are you optimizing for?” or “What result would disprove that hypothesis?” When a team is stuck, point to the relevant report or concept and let the students make the choice.

Debrief for transfer, not celebration

A debrief is where game data becomes marketing knowledge. Reserve enough time to analyze decisions; do not spend the entire session announcing rankings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical debrief sequence

  1. Reconstruct: display the team’s prediction, decision and actual KPI movement.
  2. Explain: have the team name one success and one miss, with evidence from the report.
  3. Compare: examine a competitor’s move or a different segment choice that produced a contrasting result.
  4. Generalize: connect the pattern to a course concept such as segmentation, positioning, price elasticity or the 7Ps.
  5. Apply: require one change the team would make in the next round or in a real campaign.

Wharton’s Rules of Engagement is built around iterative competition and documents instructor drill-down, rule-editing and reset controls. Where a platform offers those controls, use them to investigate a surprising result, replay a scenario or test a changed rule. If it does not, use the exported reports and a whiteboard causal map instead.

Measure engagement without confusing it with winning

Create a small dashboard for the instructor. Review it after every round and intervene before a disengaged team disappears.

Signal What it reveals Useful response
Login and tutorial completion Access or preparation failure Send a targeted technical clinic and verify the device path
On-time decision rate Scheduling, ownership or unclear deadlines Assign a recorder and publish one time-zone-aware deadline
Discussion contribution Unequal voice or weak team process Rotate roles and require one evidence-backed contribution per member
Decision-log quality Whether students are reasoning before clicking Model a strong hypothesis and give brief formative comments
Debrief attendance and explanation Whether results are being converted into learning Make the explanation a small, transparent part of participation credit
One-minute confidence and interest pulse Perceived difficulty and motivation Adjust tutorial depth, pacing or support before the next round

Do not claim that adopting a game automatically creates engagement. A peer-reviewed 2020 study of 45 students in an online asynchronous marketing simulation reported higher post-treatment GPA for the simulation group, but no significant differences in conscious attention or social connection and relatively lower enthused participation. Game use and engagement are therefore separate outcomes that must be measured in the local course.

  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

A workable eight-round course pattern

If your chosen simulation has eight rounds, use the sequence below as a planning model. It is a course design example, not a requirement that every game run eight times.

  1. Round 0: orientation, system check and tutorial completion.
  2. Round 1: ungraded segment and dashboard exploration.
  3. Round 2: single-variable hypothesis, such as price or promotion.
  4. Round 3: complete team roles and decision log; grade completion only.
  5. Round 4: first competitive decision with a short evidence-based debrief.
  6. Round 5: competitor-response scenario; require a revised positioning statement.
  7. Round 6: integrated 7Ps or 4Ps decision with KPI forecast.
  8. Round 7: replay or rule-change exercise where the platform supports it.
  9. Round 8: final competitive decision, individual reflection and course-concept debrief.

Compress or expand this pattern according to contact hours. Preserve the order—orientation, experimentation, accountable teamwork, competition and reflection—even when the number of rounds changes.

Troubleshoot common failure modes

“One student makes every decision.”

Require role rotation, a named evidence contribution from each member and a recorder’s log. In the next round, grade the quality of the process rather than the leaderboard position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Teams submit random choices.”

Turn on the prediction gate: no submission without a target segment, objective, expected KPI movement and evidence. Use the next debrief to compare the hypothesis with the result.

“Asynchronous teams miss deadlines.”

Set one completion time, name a submission owner and require a minimum check-in in the shared channel. Offer a short grace process for documented access failures, not an open-ended extension.

“Students focus only on points.”

Delay public rankings during practice, award participation credit for logs and explanations, and ask teams to defend a decision that did not win. A score without an explanation should not count as demonstrated learning.

“The debrief runs out of time.”

Limit each team to one success, one miss and one next action. Display only the KPI and competitor evidence needed for that question, then collect the full reflection asynchronously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A technical failure ruins a scored round.”

Keep the system-check record, provide a backup submission form for the decision log and prediction, and use the platform’s reset or extension control when available. Grade the documented reasoning rather than penalizing a student for an outage they could not control.

Bottom line

Fix low engagement by engineering a visible learning loop: prepare students and devices, let them practice without fear, distribute responsibility, require a prediction before every decision, reveal evidence after every round and debrief what changed. Four practice rounds are a defensible starting example, not a universal prescription. Choose synchronous or asynchronous play around your students’ schedules and your ability to coach them, then measure participation and reasoning locally instead of assuming that a game, a high score or a larger leaderboard proves engagement.
