Match the failure timestamp and timezone against logrotate, cron jobs, systemd timers, backups, reporting queries, maintenance scripts and resource limits. Preserve the MariaDB error log, system journal and kernel messages before repeatedly restarting the service; MariaDB’s own guidance says the reason for a startup failure will almost certainly be in the error log or, when started manually, on the console.

What a repeatable crash time usually means
A failure that occurs at 02:00 UTC, 03:15 local time or another consistent minute is often being triggered by scheduled work. The trigger may rotate logs, run a backup, execute a report, import a batch, restart a service or consume enough memory to provoke an operating-system kill. The schedule can also expose a configuration error: a rotation script may lack database credentials, a post-rotation flush may fail, or a maintenance command may wait until the service manager times out.

Do not assume that timing proves causation. A busy report can coincide with a timer without being the reason MariaDB stopped. Confirm the relationship in the database error log, systemd journal, cron output and kernel records. A genuine crash normally leaves a fatal signal, assertion, stack trace, corruption warning or storage error; a planned stop usually leaves orderly shutdown messages and a service-manager record.
Preserve evidence before restarting repeatedly
Every restart can overwrite the most useful part of a log, trigger recovery, or remove the process state needed for a backtrace. Capture the incident while the failure minute is still known.

- Record the exact timestamp, including timezone; hostname; MariaDB version and build; service unit or container name; and whether clients saw connection refusal, a timeout or query/data errors.
- Copy the MariaDB error log and any crash stack trace. Keep the original timestamps and file ownership rather than editing the only copy.
- Save the service status and journal entries covering several minutes before and after the event.
- Save kernel messages, especially records of OOM-killer activity, SIGKILL, disk errors or filesystem problems.
- Record which cron jobs, systemd timers, backups, report queries and maintenance scripts were scheduled for that minute.
If the service is down and you must restore availability, collect the evidence first when policy permits, then restart once and note the exact recovery time. Do not delete InnoDB data files or redo logs as an initial troubleshooting step.
Pin down the event and its timezone
Compare several incidents
Write down at least two or three failure times if they are available. A job that runs at a fixed local time may appear to move when daylight-saving rules change, while a UTC timer remains fixed. Include the host’s timezone and the timezone used by your monitoring system; otherwise a one-hour offset can send the investigation toward the wrong job.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Define what “crash” means to clients
Connection refusal, a timeout, an automatic failover, a read-only error and a process that exits are different events. A proxy or application pool can report a database outage even when MariaDB is still running. Check the service state at the failure minute and correlate it with the client symptom before changing configuration.
Check the service boundaries
Identify whether MariaDB runs as a native systemd service, inside a container, or under another supervisor. A container restart policy can hide the original exit, and a supervisor can repeatedly restart a process after a clean stop. Use the correct unit name in every journal query.
Read the MariaDB error log first
Find the configured log_error value rather than guessing. Common Linux locations include /var/log/ and /var/log/mysql; on Windows, the data directory commonly contains the MariaDB error log. The exact path depends on the installation and configuration.
Search the lines surrounding the failure for these indicators:

InnoDBsemaphore waits, hangs, recovery messages or corruption warningsSIGKILL, another fatal signal, an assertion failure or an illegal instructionstack traceor abrupt termination without an orderly shutdown sequenceCan't open, permission failures, missing paths or inability to create temporary files- storage, filesystem or checksum errors, followed by a failed restart
MariaDB’s error-log documentation notes that a crash stack trace is written after a server crash. Preserve the complete trace, not only the final line. If the server was started manually, also capture the console output because the startup failure may be printed there.
Correlate systemd, cron and timer activity
Inspect the service journal
On a systemd host, query a window that begins before the scheduled failure and ends after it. Substitute the actual unit name and an ISO-8601 interval:
sudo systemctl status mariadb
sudo journalctl -u mariadb --since "2026-10-15 01:50:00" --until "2026-10-15 02:10:00" --no-pager
Look for an explicit stop request, a timeout, a restart, exit status, permission error or a process killed by the service manager. A clean stop followed by a successful start points toward automation or policy; a fatal signal or failed recovery points toward a crash or resource problem.
List systemd timers
systemctl list-timers --all
Match each timer’s last and next run with the MariaDB event, then inspect the corresponding unit and script. A timer can invoke a backup, a log-maintenance command, a certificate renewal or an application task indirectly, so follow the complete chain rather than stopping at the timer name.
Inspect cron and daily maintenance
Review the system and account crontabs, plus the directories used by daily maintenance:
crontab -l
sudo crontab -l
sudo ls -la /etc/cron.daily
sudo ls -la /etc/logrotate.d
Check each script’s output and exit status. A job that starts at the matching minute may stop MariaDB deliberately, issue a flush, create a large temporary workload or trigger an OOM response. Timing alone is not enough; the journal or script log should show the action.

Test logrotate as a controlled hypothesis
Daily log rotation is a particularly important suspect because it touches MariaDB’s open files at a predictable time. MariaDB’s Unix/Linux guidance describes rules using daily, a postrotate action, sharedscripts, compress and delaycompress. The post-rotation command asks MariaDB to flush or reopen logs so the server closes old handles and writes to the new file. Delaying compression reduces races while a file is still being written.
Validate the rule before changing it
- Confirm that the paths in
/etc/logrotate.d/mariadbare the paths MariaDB actually uses. - Check that the rotation account can authenticate for the postrotate command without an interactive password prompt.
- Verify ownership and permissions on the rotated and newly created files.
- Read the postrotate command’s exit status and its journal output; a failed flush is evidence, not a harmless warning.
- Confirm that compression is delayed when the server may still have the file open.
Run a forced rotation only in a maintenance window
After preserving the normal configuration and choosing a window in which a test interruption is acceptable, run:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchsudo logrotate --force /etc/logrotate.d/mariadb
Immediately verify that MariaDB remains active, that a new log file is receiving fresh entries, and that the postrotate command completed successfully. Inspect the old file for a clean boundary and check the service journal for a stop, timeout, authentication error or crash. Do not use a forced rotation during a critical workload merely to reproduce the issue.
Do not rotate binary logs with an external rule
MariaDB manages binary-log rotation internally through settings such as max_binlog_size and retention controls. An external logrotate rule aimed at binary logs can interfere with that management and should not be treated like an ordinary text error log.
Check disk space and inode exhaustion
A log can be syntactically correct and still fill the filesystem. MariaDB security guidance warns that when a log fills the storage partition, the server can crash or hang. Check bytes and inodes on every filesystem used for data, logs, temporary files, binary logs and backups:
df -h
df -i
Remove or archive files only under your retention and recovery policy. A full filesystem can also prevent the service from writing its error log, creating a PID file or completing crash recovery, so a restart failure does not prove that the original trigger has disappeared. Record which mount reached its limit and whether the growth happens before the scheduled minute.

Check memory pressure and operating-system kills
MariaDB documents SIGKILL as commonly meaning that a user or the operating system killed the process; an out-of-memory event is a frequent example. A daily backup, report, batch import or sort can create a short memory peak that is invisible in a simple average.
Inspect the kernel and service records around the event:
sudo journalctl -k --since "2026-10-15 01:50:00" --until "2026-10-15 02:10:00" --no-pager
Look for OOM-killer messages, SIGKILL, cgroup memory limits, swap exhaustion and preceding I/O or CPU saturation. Then compare the schedule with backup compression, report execution, import jobs and monitoring queries. If systemd kills the service after a long stop or start, capture the timeout and the resource evidence immediately before it.
Distinguish a clean stop from a true crash
| Evidence | Most likely interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Orderly shutdown lines, an explicit stop request and a normal subsequent start | Scheduled maintenance, administrator action or a supervisor policy | Identify the caller in the journal, timer or script output. |
| SIGKILL, OOM-killer entry or cgroup memory-limit message | Operating-system or service-manager termination | Reduce the scheduled peak, raise an appropriate limit or add capacity; verify with the next run. |
| Fatal signal, assertion, illegal instruction or stack trace | MariaDB process crash | Preserve the full trace and build details; investigate as a software, query or platform fault. |
| InnoDB semaphore wait exceeding 600 seconds | Severe engine stall that can lead to a crash report or forced termination | Keep the complete log and obtain a full backtrace before destructive recovery actions. |
| Permission, “Can’t open”, full filesystem or storage errors | Environment or file-access failure | Correct ownership, paths or capacity, then test a controlled restart. |
| No MariaDB exit, but clients time out | Network, proxy, connection-pool or workload problem rather than a process crash | Compare application and network logs with the server’s active state. |
What to do when the log shows a genuine MariaDB crash
If the error log reports an InnoDB semaphore wait over 600 seconds, a fatal signal, illegal instruction, hardware indicator or corruption, stop treating the event as a routine scheduled restart. Preserve the complete error log, stack trace, operating-system and CPU details, exact MariaDB build, relevant configuration and the SQL involved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen a query appears in the crash context, include its EXPLAIN output and SHOW CREATE TABLE definitions in the incident record. MariaDB requests full backtraces for several crash classes; a truncated trace makes it much harder to distinguish a server defect from a platform or workload trigger. Work from a filesystem or storage snapshot, or from a copy, whenever your recovery policy allows.
Do not delete InnoDB data files, redo files or other recovery material simply because the server will not start. Such deletion can turn a diagnosable failure into permanent data loss. If recovery requires specialist intervention, keep the original evidence untouched and make changes on a copy.

Apply the fix that matches the evidence
If logrotate is responsible
Correct the log paths, ownership and authentication used by the postrotate action. Keep the flush/reopen operation synchronized with rotation, retain delayed compression where appropriate, and remove duplicate rules that act on the same files. Test the rule in a maintenance window and verify the next scheduled run rather than assuming a successful manual command proves the daily job is safe.
If a backup or report causes the failure
Move the job away from the collision window, limit its concurrency or memory use, and measure its disk and temporary-file requirements. A schedule change is only a fix when the job completes and MariaDB remains healthy at the new time. Keep the original timestamps so you can prove that the old and new events no longer coincide.
If storage is filling
Set a retention policy for text logs, binary logs, backups and temporary output; monitor both bytes and inodes; and alert before the filesystem is full. Ensure the error log itself remains writable so a future failure leaves evidence.
If the operating system is killing MariaDB
Address the measured memory peak: reduce overlapping jobs, correct an undersized container or service limit, add swap or physical memory where appropriate, and review queries that create large sorts or temporary tables. Do not mask an OOM event by merely increasing restart attempts; that can produce repeated recovery cycles and additional load.
If the event is a software or hardware crash
Keep the exact MariaDB build and platform details with the backtrace, isolate the reproducing workload when possible, and follow a controlled upgrade or vendor-support process. Preserve snapshots and avoid destructive “repair” steps until the failure mode is understood.
Verify the repair over more than one cycle
A fix is not proven because MariaDB starts once. Observe the next scheduled execution and at least one additional cycle when the schedule is daily. Confirm all of the following:
- The service remains active through the trigger minute and afterward.
- The expected error-log file is open, writable and receiving new entries.
- Disk bytes and inodes remain within policy limits.
- No matching OOM, SIGKILL, permission, timeout or failed-flush message appears.
- The backup, report, import or rotation job completes with a successful exit status.
- Clients maintain normal connections and no hidden supervisor is repeatedly restarting the process.
Keep a short incident timeline with the old failure minute, the change made, the observed resource levels and the verification results. If the crash returns, compare the new evidence with the preserved original rather than starting from an empty log.
Quick Recap
Quick diagnostic sequence
- Write down the exact failure minute and timezone, and classify the client symptom.
- Copy the MariaDB error log, stack trace, service journal and kernel records before repeated restarts.
- Check service status, systemd timers, cron entries,
/etc/cron.dailyand/etc/logrotate.d. - Compare scheduled jobs with backups, reports, imports and maintenance scripts that run at that minute.
- Check disk bytes and inodes for data, log and temporary filesystems.
- Look for OOM-killer, SIGKILL, fatal-signal, assertion, corruption and storage messages.
- If logrotate remains plausible, validate its paths, permissions, authentication and postrotate result, then test it only in a maintenance window.
- For a true crash, preserve the full backtrace, build and platform details and work from a snapshot or copy.
- Verify the service, logs, resources and scheduled job across multiple daily cycles.
