How to Fix Steam Not Detecting a Controller on Windows

If Steam does not detect your controller, start at the physical connection and work upward: use a known-good USB data cable, change USB ports, remove competing USB devices, verify that Windows sees the controller, then check Steam Input and the individual game’s Controller settings. A pad can charge normally while remaining invisible when its cable carries power but no USB data.

Find the point where detection stops

“Steam is not detecting my controller” can describe three different failures. Windows may not see the device at all; Windows may see it while Steam does not; or Steam may list it while a particular game ignores its input. Each checkpoint has a different fix, so avoid changing several settings at once.

What you observe Most useful first check Connection paths to compare
The controller only charges and never appears Replace the cable with a known-good USB data cable and try another port USB cable and USB port
Windows does not list the controller Verify the physical path, then test Bluetooth or another receiver USB, Bluetooth, receiver
Windows lists it but Steam does not Open Steam’s controller settings and check Steam Input support USB, Bluetooth, receiver
Steam lists it but one game does not Use that game’s Properties › Controller override The same connection that Steam detects
The problem follows the controller to another computer Test the controller, receiver, and firmware as possible hardware causes A second computer and an alternate connection

Steam’s own troubleshooting guidance highlights two easy-to-miss physical causes: some third-party leads are intended only for charging and have no data lines, and USB resources can be contested when a controller receiver or puck shares a hub with a headset, audio card, sound card, or webcam. Check those before reinstalling software.

1. Prove the USB data path

Use a cable that carries data

Disconnect the controller and substitute the cable supplied with it, or another cable that you have already confirmed transfers data. A charge-only lead can power the battery and illuminate charging indicators without creating a USB device that Windows or Steam can enumerate. This is why “it charges” does not prove that the wired connection is usable for games.

  1. Turn the controller off if its instructions require that for wired mode.
  2. Connect it directly to the computer with the supplied or known-good data cable.
  3. Wait a few seconds, then check Windows before opening or reopening Steam.
  4. If nothing appears, repeat with a second data-capable cable rather than another charging lead.

Change the USB port

Move the cable to a different USB port on the computer. Avoid testing through a hub for the first pass; a direct port gives you a cleaner diagnostic path. If one port works and another does not, keep the working port for the remainder of the test and investigate the original port later.

Remove USB resource contention

Temporarily unplug nearby high-traffic USB equipment, especially a USB headset, audio interface or sound card, webcam, or another controller receiver. If the controller begins working after one device is removed, reconnect devices one at a time and change the hub or port arrangement. The goal is to identify whether the symptom is caused by shared USB resources rather than by Steam’s controller layer.

2. Confirm that Windows detects the controller

Windows and Steam are separate checkpoints. Do not troubleshoot Steam Input until Windows can see the controller through at least one connection method.

Wired USB check

With the controller connected by a data cable, look in Windows for the newly connected game controller or USB device. Windows 11 normally detects Xbox, PlayStation, and many third-party controllers over USB and installs the drivers needed for recognition. If Windows shows no reaction, return to the cable, port, and USB-contention checks instead of changing Steam settings.

Wireless Bluetooth check

For a Bluetooth controller, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices in Windows and pair it there. Put the controller into its pairing mode according to its hardware instructions, then select it from the available devices. If it is still paired with a console or phone, unpair it from that device first; an active connection elsewhere can prevent the computer from completing its own pairing.

After pairing, verify that Windows keeps the device connected while you move a stick or press a button. If Bluetooth pairing repeatedly fails, compare the result with a wired data connection or a separate USB Bluetooth adapter. This comparison tells you whether the fault is confined to the computer’s wireless path.

Receiver-based controllers

If your pad uses a proprietary wireless receiver, connect the receiver directly to a different USB port and repeat the USB-contention test. A receiver that works alone but fails beside an audio device or webcam points to port or resource placement; a receiver that fails on multiple ports and computers points more strongly to the receiver or controller.

3. Check Steam’s controller layer

Once Windows detects the device, restart Steam so it re-enumerates the controller. Steam Input supports Steam Controller, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Pro, and DirectInput gamepads. The client is updated over time, so the visible controller name, wording, or menu placement can differ between Steam versions.

Open the controller settings

  1. In Steam, open the controller settings area from the Steam client.
  2. Look for the connected controller in the list and confirm that Steam Input is enabled for the controller family you are using.
  3. Move an analogue stick or press a button in the test view, if shown, to confirm that Steam receives input rather than merely listing the device.
  4. If the device is absent, close Steam completely, reconnect the controller, and start Steam again.

Do not assume that a PlayStation-shaped controller must be presented to a game as a PlayStation device. Steam Input can translate supported controller families for games that expect a different protocol. Conversely, a game may work better with Steam Input disabled if it has its own native support.

4. Fix a game that ignores a controller Steam already sees

If Steam’s controller screen responds but one game does not, the physical connection and global detection are working. Treat this as a per-game configuration conflict.

Test the per-game Controller override

  1. In your Steam Library, right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
  2. Open the game’s Controller page.
  3. Change the Steam Input override to one setting, launch the game, and test it.
  4. If there is no change, close the game and test the alternative setting rather than changing several options together.
  5. Restart Steam or restart the computer after changing the override if the game still uses the previous behavior.

A Steam-distributed game manual documents choosing Disable Steam Input when a PlayStation or Xbox controller is not recognized by that game. That is a test, not a universal rule: the correct choice depends on the controller and the game’s own input implementation. If disabling Steam Input removes support, restore the prior setting and test the enabled option.

Distinguish a game problem from a Steam problem

Test the same controller in another Steam game. If several games respond, the first title’s Controller override or native protocol is the likely boundary. If no game responds while Steam’s test view does, keep the override investigation focused on one title at a time and restart Steam between changes so an old mapping is not mistaken for a new result.

5. Match the controller protocol to the game

Controller labels can hide protocol differences. Xbox-family pads commonly present an XInput-style interface; many older or generic pads use DirectInput; PlayStation and Switch Pro devices may rely on Steam Input translation unless a game supports them directly. Steam Input’s supported families include the major Xbox, PlayStation 4, Switch Pro, Steam Controller, and DirectInput categories, but support details and labels can change as the client is updated.

  • Xbox 360 or Xbox One: first test with Steam Input’s Xbox support enabled, then compare a game’s native behavior if it offers its own controller setting.
  • PlayStation 4: test Steam Input enabled and disabled in the affected game’s Controller page; the documented manual procedure uses the disabled setting when the game fails to recognize the pad.
  • Nintendo Switch Pro: verify that Steam lists the controller and test the game’s per-title override if button prompts or input are absent.
  • Generic DirectInput pad: confirm that Steam identifies it as a DirectInput gamepad before trying game-specific settings.

These are troubleshooting branches, not guarantees that every title supports every family. A game can be compatible with the controller in one protocol and incompatible in another, even though Windows and Steam both show the hardware.

6. Use a controlled cross-path test

When the basic checks do not isolate the failure, change one variable at a time. Record whether the controller is visible at the Windows checkpoint and at the Steam checkpoint for each path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Test the known-good USB data cable on a direct port with other high-traffic USB devices disconnected.
  2. Test a second direct USB port.
  3. If the controller supports it, pair over Windows Bluetooth after unpairing it from consoles and phones.
  4. If it uses a receiver, test that receiver on a different direct port and without a hub.
  5. Connect the controller or receiver to another computer and check whether Windows detects it there.
  6. On the original computer, restart Steam after each connection change and repeat the Steam controller check.

Compare the results by connection mode, failure location, protocol, and whether another USB device changes the symptom. For example, USB failure with Bluetooth success isolates the problem to the cable, port, or wired interface; failure on USB, Bluetooth, and a receiver across two computers points away from Steam configuration.

7. Decide when hardware is the remaining suspect

If the controller fails with a known-good data cable, alternate USB ports, Bluetooth or another adapter, and on another computer, the likely remaining causes are the controller, its receiver, or firmware. The official troubleshooting material does not specify a universal replacement threshold, so replacement is a practical decision after these cross-path checks rather than a fixed rule.

  • Replace or service the cable when another data cable works reliably.
  • Change the port or hub arrangement when disconnecting a headset, audio device, sound card, or webcam changes detection.
  • Investigate the receiver when the controller works by cable but not through that receiver on multiple ports.
  • Consider controller hardware or firmware service when every connection mode fails and the fault follows the controller to another computer.

Keep the working path documented. It gives you a reliable temporary setup and prevents a later Steam update or game-specific change from being confused with a physical repair.

If you want an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, back up and restore drivers, and schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a 2-day free trial requires no credit card before a subscription. Results vary, and no tool repairs every controller or connection failure.
