How to Fix Microphone, Audio, and Connection Problems with the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3X

By VGSources Team 13 min read

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3X has no microphone, missing or one-sided sound, or keeps disconnecting, first check the connection route: set the USB-C dongle to Xbox mode for Xbox, and PC mode for PC, PS5, or a docked Nintendo Switch. Connect it directly to the host, then confirm the headset is powered on and gives a connection chime. For a silent mic, check mute and mic seating before changing the console or computer’s input settings. The steps below separate headset, dongle, and host problems so you can troubleshoot without replacing parts unnecessarily.

What should I check first when the Nova 3X stops working?

Start with the connection type and dongle switch, then check the host’s output or input selection. A headset can be powered on yet remain on the wrong connection path, or the console or computer can send audio to another device. Establishing the path first prevents you from changing several settings at once and losing track of the actual cause.

  1. Identify how you are connecting. Use the USB-C dongle for the 2.4 GHz wireless connection, or pair over Bluetooth with a phone or tablet.
  2. If you are using the dongle, check its mode. Set it to Xbox for an Xbox console. Set it to PC for a PC, PS5, or docked Nintendo Switch.
  3. Connect the dongle directly to the host. Use the USB-C port or the included USB-C-to-A adapter if the host requires USB-A. Avoid a hub or extension while diagnosing.
  4. Power on the headset and listen for the connection chime. The setup guide identifies the chime and a slowly blinking LED as signs of a connection.
  5. Check the host’s audio routing. Select the Nova 3X as the output for sound problems or as the input for microphone problems.
  6. Try another connection or host if available. If the problem occurs over Bluetooth or on a second device too, a host-specific setting is less likely to be the cause.

Change one thing at a time and retest. That makes it easier to tell whether the fault was the dongle mode, a USB connection, a host setting, or the headset itself. Write down which test worked: for example, “Bluetooth works but PC dongle does not” points toward the dongle path or PC routing, while “the mic fails on every device” points toward the microphone, its socket, or the headset.

How do I connect the Nova 3X to Xbox, PS5, PC, or a docked Switch?

For Xbox, use the dongle’s Xbox position. For PC, PS5, and docked Nintendo Switch, use its PC position. Plug the dongle into the host, power on the headset, and check for the chime and slow LED blink.

Host Dongle switch Connection
Xbox Xbox Plug the dongle into the console.
PC PC Plug the dongle into USB-C, or use the included USB-C-to-A adapter for USB-A.
PS5 PC Plug the dongle into a USB port on the console.
Docked Nintendo Switch PC Plug the dongle into a USB port on the dock.

These are the modes and connection paths documented in SteelSeries’ setup guide. If sound is missing after connecting, confirm the host is routing audio to the headset; a connected dongle does not by itself confirm that the host selected the Nova 3X as its output. On a PC, this can mean changing both the Windows default output and the output selected inside a game, chat application, or browser. On a console, look in the audio device controls and verify that the headset is the active output rather than television speakers or another USB device.

What does the connection chime tell me?

The setup guide describes a connection chime and slowly blinking LED as signs that the powered-on headset has connected. If you do not hear the chime, verify the switch position and direct USB connection first. If those are correct, power the headset off and on and try the pairing steps below. A chime confirms the wireless link, not necessarily that a game or operating system has selected the headset for every audio stream.

How do I connect the Nova 3X over Bluetooth?

Turn the headset on, press its Power button once to switch connection modes, then select Arctis Nova 3X Wireless from the phone or tablet’s Bluetooth menu. Wait for the slow blue LED blink.

  1. Power on the headset.
  2. Press the Power button once to switch between Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz.
  3. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or tablet and choose Arctis Nova 3X Wireless.
  4. Wait for the slow blue LED blink to confirm the Bluetooth connection.

If the device does not appear, make sure the headset is in Bluetooth mode rather than 2.4 GHz mode, then look again in the Bluetooth menu. The Power button switches between the two modes; it is not necessary to assume that the headset is still on Bluetooth just because it was paired previously. Keep the phone or tablet close during the initial selection, and remove an old failed entry from that device’s Bluetooth list only if the normal selection does not complete.

Should I use Bluetooth or the dongle?

Use the dongle when connecting to the listed console or computer platforms: Xbox requires Xbox mode, while PC, PS5, and docked Switch use PC mode. Bluetooth is the documented pairing route for a phone or tablet. The dongle and Bluetooth are different connection paths, so a successful Bluetooth test is useful for separating a host or dongle issue from a headset-wide failure. SteelSeries’ guide documents the two connection methods but does not provide a measured latency comparison, so avoid treating a specific delay difference as a published Nova 3X specification.

Why is my Nova 3X microphone not working?

Check the headset’s mute control and make sure the detachable ClearCast microphone is fully seated. Then confirm the console or computer has selected the Nova 3X as its microphone input and has permission to use it. A mute switch or loose microphone can produce the same symptom as an incorrect software route, so check the physical controls before reinstalling anything.

Check the headset before changing software

  • Make sure the headset is not muted using its mute control.
  • Check that the detachable ClearCast microphone is pushed fully into its connection.
  • Check that the host is connected to the headset by the intended route and that the headset is powered on.
  • Test the microphone on another device if possible. If it works there, focus on the original host’s input settings; if it fails across devices, inspect the headset and microphone for physical damage.

Seat the microphone firmly without twisting or forcing the connector. If a windscreen is fitted, make sure it has not been displaced in a way that physically interferes with the microphone connection. The guide lists the microphone and windscreen as separate components, which matters when deciding whether a small replacement is appropriate.

Set the microphone on a console

On Xbox, check the headset’s device and mic-monitoring settings. On PlayStation, set the headset as the input device. Menu wording can vary by system software, so look for the console’s audio or microphone input controls rather than relying on a menu label that may differ by version. Speak while watching the console’s input indicator or mic-monitoring response, if available, and confirm that game chat has not been disabled separately from the system microphone.

Set the microphone in Windows 10 or 11

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. Enable Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  3. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  4. Under Input, select the Nova 3X.
  5. Run the built-in microphone test and speak into the mic to see whether Windows detects input.

If Windows does not detect the headset after permissions and input selection are correct, Microsoft recommends updating or reinstalling audio drivers. Retest after doing so. Also check the individual game or voice-chat application: many programs keep their own input-device choice even after Windows’ system default has changed. A Windows test that shows input proves the operating system can hear the mic, but it does not guarantee that a particular game has selected it.

Why is there no sound, muffled sound, or sound in only one ear?

Check the dongle mode, USB connection, host output selection, and headset volume. If only one side plays, check stereo balance; then test a different host or Bluetooth connection to help isolate the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No sound from either ear

  1. Confirm the dongle is set to the correct mode for the host.
  2. Plug the dongle directly into the console or computer; use the USB-C-to-A adapter only when the host needs USB-A.
  3. Confirm the headset is powered on and connected, using the chime and slow LED blink as indicators.
  4. Select the Nova 3X as the host’s audio output and check the headset volume.
  5. Try Bluetooth or another host, if available, to see whether the sound problem follows the headset.

Check both the system-level output and the application-level output. A game can be muted or directed to a monitor even when the operating system shows the Nova 3X as connected. If Bluetooth produces sound but the dongle does not, return to dongle mode, USB placement, detection, and re-pairing rather than treating the earcups as failed.

Only one ear has sound

Check the host’s stereo balance setting and make sure it is not shifted fully to one side. If the balance is centered but the fault remains, test on another host or connection type. A problem that follows the headset across tests is more suggestive of a headset or physical connection issue than a single host’s routing. Do not use a balance change as a permanent workaround until you know the original setting was the cause, because it can hide a channel or hardware fault.

The sound is muffled

First confirm the host’s output and the dongle connection, then test another device or connection type. SteelSeries’ support index lists a dedicated Nova 3 article for muffled sound, as well as articles for dongle detection, microphone failure, hardware reset, and pairing. Use a model-specific support article if basic routing checks do not resolve the symptom. Testing Bluetooth is especially useful here: if the same muffling is present on two unrelated hosts and connection types, inspect the headset itself; if it appears only through one host, continue with that host’s output settings.

Why does the Nova 3X keep disconnecting?

Reduce distance and interference, connect the dongle directly, update firmware, and re-pair the headset if the connection still drops. Argos describes a usual wireless range of about 10 m as general support guidance; it is not an independently measured Nova 3X range specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Move closer to the dongle. Argos’s “usually within 10m” wording is general wireless guidance, not a guaranteed operating distance for every room or setup.
  • Reduce possible interference. Move the dongle or headset away from Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, and microwave ovens where practical.
  • Connect the dongle directly. Remove a USB hub or extension from the connection path while testing.
  • Update firmware. Follow SteelSeries’ current model-specific instructions for checking and installing updates.
  • Re-pair the headset and dongle. Use the procedure below if simpler connection checks do not restore a stable link.

Retest in the same location after each change. If moving closer helps, range or interference may be involved; if the issue persists across hosts and after re-pairing, continue with the physical and power checks. A direct connection is important because a hub can introduce another point of failure or place the dongle in a crowded position behind a desk or console.

How do I pair the Nova 3X dongle again?

The product guide says the headset and dongle are paired by default. To pair them again, connect the dongle, hold its Pairing button for four seconds, and put the headset into 2.4 GHz pairing mode. A Connected sound and slow LED blink indicate success.

  1. Connect the dongle to the host.
  2. Hold the dongle’s Pairing button for four seconds.
  3. If the headset is on, press its Power button three times until you hear “2.4 G pairing mode” and see the LED ring blink rapidly.
  4. If the headset is off, hold its Power button for four seconds instead.
  5. Wait for the Connected sound and slow LED blink.

Do not confuse the rapid LED-ring blink during pairing with the slow blink that indicates a successful connection. If pairing does not complete, check that you followed the headset-on or headset-off branch that matches its state, then retry with the dongle connected. Keep the dongle in the same direct host connection during the entire procedure; moving it to a hub or another port halfway through makes the result harder to interpret.

What do the battery lights mean, and what if the headset will not turn on?

The product guide lists the battery-indicator colors as green for 100–51%, yellow for 50–15%, orange for 14–6%, and red for 5–1%. Charge through the headset’s USB-C port if power is low or the headset will not start.

A red indicator describes the lowest displayed battery band; it does not by itself mean the headset is broken. Charge first, then try powering on again. If charging does not resolve a power problem, Argos advises using the reset pinhole or button for 5–10 seconds. The exact reset procedure should come from SteelSeries’ hardware-reset instructions for the Nova 3X; do not assume a button combination documented for another headset model applies here.

When should I replace a microphone or another part?

Test the headset on another host or connection before buying a part. The product guide lists a detachable ClearCast microphone, microphone windscreen, USB-C charging cable, and USB-C-to-A adapter, so a failure may involve a replaceable component rather than the complete headset.

  • If the mic fails across devices, inspect the detachable microphone and its seating; the guide identifies the mic and windscreen as separate components.
  • If a USB connection fails, check the dongle’s direct connection and the USB-C-to-A adapter, if used, before concluding the headset is faulty.
  • If charging is the issue, inspect the USB-C charging connection and cable.
  • If a problem follows the headset across connection types and hosts, consult SteelSeries support about the model-specific fault before choosing a replacement.

Neither the product guide nor the support information cited here establishes repair success rates or a cost comparison between replacing a component and replacing the whole headset. Choose a part only after testing points to a physical fault; the available evidence does not justify assuming every audio problem needs new hardware. Verify compatibility and regional availability with SteelSeries before ordering a microphone, windscreen, cable, or adapter.

What if these steps do not fix the problem?

Use the dedicated Nova 3 support articles for the remaining symptom rather than applying reset or pairing steps from an unrelated Arctis model. SteelSeries’ support index lists model-specific guidance for muffled sound, dongle detection, microphone failure, hardware reset, and pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Dongle not detected: verify mode and direct USB connection, then consult the Nova 3 dongle-detection guidance.
  • Mic still silent: verify mute, mic seating, host selection, and permissions, then consult the Nova 3 microphone guidance.
  • Muffled audio or failed pairing: consult the corresponding Nova 3 support article after checking output routing and the pairing procedure above.
  • Power or reset problem: follow the exact Nova 3 hardware-reset instructions rather than a procedure for another model.

When contacting support, record the host, dongle switch position, whether the connection chime occurs, LED behavior, whether Bluetooth works, and whether the microphone or audio fails on a second device. Those observations quickly distinguish a routing problem from a pairing, dongle, or physical-component problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a reset combination from another Arctis headset?

Do not assume it applies. Reset instructions can be model-specific; use SteelSeries’ hardware-reset directions for the Nova 3X rather than copying a button sequence for a different Arctis headset.

Does a red battery light mean the headset is broken?

No. The product guide uses red for the lowest displayed battery band, so charge the headset before treating a power problem as a hardware failure.

Should I replace the whole headset if the microphone fails?

Not automatically. The ClearCast microphone is detachable, so first test the headset on another device and inspect the mic connection; that helps distinguish a host setting from a likely physical fault.

Which dongle mode works with PS5?

Set the USB-C dongle to PC mode and connect it directly to a PS5 USB port.

Why does my Nova 3X work on Bluetooth but not with the dongle?

Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz are separate paths. Check the dongle’s Xbox or PC switch position, direct USB connection, host output selection, firmware, and re-pairing procedure.

What is the Nova 3X wireless range?

Argos describes wireless operation as usually within 10 m. Treat that as general guidance rather than an independently measured Nova 3X specification, because walls and interference can reduce it.

Why can Windows hear the mic but my game cannot?

Windows may have the Nova 3X selected while the game uses its own input setting. Confirm microphone permissions, select the Nova 3X under Windows Input, run the Windows test, and then choose the same device inside the game or chat app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do rapid and slow LED blinks mean during pairing?

The rapid LED-ring blink indicates 2.4 GHz pairing mode. A Connected sound followed by a slow blink indicates that pairing completed.

The Bottom Line

Most Nova 3X problems are isolated by checking the dongle mode, direct USB connection, headset mute and microphone seating, and the host’s input or output selection. Use Xbox mode only for Xbox; use PC mode for PC, PS5, and docked Switch. For dropouts, reduce distance and interference, update firmware, and re-pair. Test Bluetooth or another host before buying parts, and use SteelSeries’ Nova 3X-specific reset and support instructions for failures that remain.
