Microsoft 365 error 0-1012 (0) is an Office installation failure. It usually appears while Microsoft 365, Office, or Project is being installed, including in Click-to-Run setup logs. The code does not by itself prove that your subscription is invalid. The safest fix is to check available space, remove any existing Office installation with Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter, restart Windows, and try again. If the web installer still fails, use Microsoft’s supported offline installer, then check network, proxy, firewall, and antivirus restrictions.
Exact-code reports come primarily from Microsoft Q&A discussions and user-specific setup logs, so no single cause applies to every computer. Leftover Office components, damaged Windows or Office files, installer or registry conflicts, low disk space, and blocked network traffic are all plausible conditions. Follow the least destructive steps first and reserve file repair or registry investigation for advanced troubleshooting.

What does Microsoft 365 error code 0-1012 (0) mean?
Error 0-1012, also displayed as 0-1012 (0), means that the Office installer could not complete its work. Reports show it during a Microsoft 365 or Office installation and when Project is being installed; some Click-to-Run logs record the same code. It is therefore an installer-state problem, not a message that identifies a particular document problem.
The code is also different from an activation-only warning such as “Unlicensed Product.” An installation can finish and then fail activation, or installation can stop before activation is ever attempted. That distinction determines which checks are useful.

What should I do first when 0-1012 appears?
Capture the complete wording and the point at which the process stopped before changing anything. Include the parenthesized “(0)” if it is shown; that detail helps support staff match your report to the correct setup log.
- Decide whether the failure happened while Office files were being installed or after installation when you tried to activate.
- Note whether you were installing Microsoft 365, a one-time Office edition, Project, or another Click-to-Run product.
- Record whether the installer was downloaded from the web, launched by an organization, or run from an existing setup package.
- Write down any second message, such as a network warning, a request to close Office, or “We’re sorry, we had a problem installing your Office program(s).”
These observations prevent you from applying activation remedies to an installation failure and give an administrator or Microsoft support a useful starting point.

Use this order. It starts with checks that are reversible and explicitly included in Microsoft’s related Office-installation guidance, then moves to network troubleshooting and only afterward to advanced Windows repair.
- Check free space on the system drive. Microsoft identifies an almost-full hard drive as a possible condition for Office installation errors. Remove or move unnecessary files if space is tight, then run setup again. Do not assume that a large secondary drive helps if Windows and the installer are using a different system drive.
- Remove an older or incomplete Office installation. Run Microsoft’s Office uninstall troubleshooter and allow it to clean the existing Microsoft 365 or Office installation. This is preferable to manually deleting folders because it is designed to remove the installation state that can confuse a new Click-to-Run attempt.
- Restart Windows. A restart releases files and services left open by a failed setup. Do not skip it merely because the uninstall tool reports that it completed.
- Retry the installation. Start with the normal installer after the restart. If the same code returns, continue rather than repeatedly launching the identical setup package.
- Use the supported offline installer. Microsoft provides an offline installation route for cases in which the web installer cannot obtain files reliably. Download the required package when you have a dependable connection, then run the local installation. This changes how the files are delivered; it does not repair a damaged Windows installation or guarantee that activation will succeed.
- Check network and security controls. Review proxy settings, firewall rules, antivirus interference, and other network restrictions. A wired connection or a different network can help distinguish a local connection problem from a problem on a work or school network. Organization-managed networks may require an IT administrator to permit Microsoft 365 installation traffic.
- Separate activation troubleshooting from installation troubleshooting. If Office is installed but reports “Unlicensed Product,” sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription, confirm the subscription status, remove duplicate Office installations, and check the computer’s date and time, Windows and Office updates, firewall, antivirus, and proxy settings. Use Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter when it is offered.
- Escalate if the exact code remains. If cleanup, a restart, the offline installer, and network checks do not change the result, contact Microsoft support or your organization’s administrator. Provide the full code, setup log details, product edition, and the steps already completed.
Why can an old Office installation trigger 0-1012?
Office setup does not simply copy a few application files. It must register services, update Click-to-Run state, and coordinate product information already on the computer. A failed uninstall, an interrupted update, or a second Office edition can leave state that conflicts with the new installation.
Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter is the preferred first response because it targets that existing installation state. Manually removing random Office folders can leave registrations behind, remove files needed by another Office product, or make later diagnosis harder. If you have Project or another Office product installed, tell support before removing anything so the cleanup does not unintentionally affect a required edition.

Can low disk space cause error 0-1012?
Yes, insufficient space is one of the conditions Microsoft lists for related Office installation failures. The installer may need room for downloaded packages, temporary files, the installed programs, and rollback data. The error itself does not state how much space is required, so use Windows’ system-drive storage view rather than relying on a universal number.
Check the drive that contains Windows and the user profile used to run setup. Emptying a recycle bin, removing temporary files, or moving large personal media can create room, but do not delete Office or Windows folders manually as a first step. After freeing space, restart the installation so setup can recreate incomplete temporary data.
When should I choose the offline installer?
Choose it after the normal web installation fails, especially when the computer is behind a proxy, restrictive firewall, filtered antivirus, or unreliable internet connection. Microsoft describes the offline installer as a supported next step for network-related installation problems.
The offline method is useful because the installation files are obtained in a separate download and then applied locally. It does not bypass account requirements, repair corrupted Windows components, or make an organization’s policy disappear. If downloading is blocked on a work or school connection, ask IT for an approved way to obtain and run the package instead of attempting to disable security controls permanently.
How do proxy, firewall, antivirus, and network settings affect setup?
The web installer must reach Microsoft services while it downloads and configures Office. A proxy that requires authentication, a firewall rule that blocks setup traffic, antivirus scanning that interrupts a temporary file, or a filtered network can all make the installer report a generic failure code.

- Retry on a stable wired connection when practical.
- Try another trusted network only if your organization’s policies permit it.
- Check whether a proxy is configured for Windows or for the organization’s security software.
- Temporarily test whether antivirus or endpoint protection is interfering only under an administrator-approved procedure; do not leave protection disabled.
- On a managed computer, ask IT to review policy and firewall logs rather than changing enterprise settings yourself.
If the offline installer succeeds on the same machine, the earlier failure was likely related to delivery conditions rather than proof that every Office component was damaged. If both methods fail, continue with cleanup and escalation instead of repeatedly switching networks.
What if Office installs but shows “Unlicensed Product”?
That symptom belongs to activation, not the original 0-1012 installation failure. First sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the purchase or organization assignment and verify that the subscription is active. A different account can install the software successfully but have no entitlement to activate it.
Then look for duplicate Office installations, which can compete for activation. Confirm that Windows’ date and time are correct, install pending Windows and Office updates, and check that firewall, antivirus, and proxy settings are not blocking activation. Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter can identify account or licensing conditions that an installer error cannot.
Could damaged Windows or Office files be responsible?
Community reports associate 0-1012 with corrupted Windows files, incomplete prior removal, and conflicts in the registry. Those reports describe individual machines; they do not establish a universal root cause or a success rate for any one repair.
After the official cleanup and offline-installation steps, an administrator can use Windows’ System File Checker and other supported repair tools to check for damaged system files. Run such tools from an elevated account and follow Microsoft’s current Windows instructions. Repair may take time and can require a restart, so save work first.

Registry investigation is more hazardous. Export or back up the relevant state before any change, document each modification, and use it only when a qualified administrator or Microsoft support directs you to a specific location. Deleting registry keys at random is not Microsoft’s default fix for 0-1012 and can break Office or other Windows software.
Which remedy is safest for error 0-1012?
The options differ in what they change and how easily you can undo them. Start at the top of this table and move downward only when the earlier option has been tried or ruled out.
| Remedy | Removes old Office state | Works offline | Changes network or security settings | Risk and reversibility | Support status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Check system-drive space | No | Yes | No | Low risk; freeing personal files is reversible when moved or backed up | Consistent with Microsoft installation guidance |
| Microsoft uninstall troubleshooter | Yes | Usually requires the tool to run, but the cleanup itself targets local Office state | No | Moderate configuration change; reinstall is possible | Official Microsoft method |
| Restart and retry | No | Yes after files are available | No | Low risk | Standard supported step |
| Microsoft offline installer | No | Yes after the package is downloaded | No | Low to moderate; it installs locally without rewriting firewall policy | Official Microsoft option for web-installation problems |
| Network, proxy, firewall, or antivirus review | No | Not necessarily | Potentially | Varies; organization approval may be required | Supported diagnostic path, but policy changes belong to IT |
| System File Checker or other Windows repair | No | Yes for the scan itself | No | Moderate; use an administrator account and expect a restart | Advanced troubleshooting, not a guaranteed 0-1012 fix |
| Registry editing or deletion | Possibly, but inconsistently | Yes | No | High risk and difficult to reverse without a backup | Use only with specific expert guidance |
| Full Windows reset | May remove everything, depending on the reset choice | Not normally | No | Very high; applications and settings can be lost | Not an appropriate default response to this code |
What information should I give Microsoft support or IT?
Support can work faster when the report distinguishes an installation failure from activation. Include the exact text, whether it says 0-1012 or 0-1012 (0), the Office or Project edition, Windows version, and whether the installer was web-based or offline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The approximate time and date of the failed attempt.
- Whether an older Office installation was present.
- Whether the uninstall troubleshooter completed and Windows was restarted.
- Whether the offline installer produced the same code.
- Whether the computer uses a proxy, managed firewall, endpoint antivirus, or work/school network.
- Any Click-to-Run setup log reference or secondary message.
Do not send passwords, product keys, or unrelated personal files. If the device is organization-managed, an administrator may have access to deployment logs and policy settings that a local user cannot see.
What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not treat 0-1012 as proof that your subscription is canceled; activation has its own checks.
- Do not repeatedly run the same web installer without first cleaning the old installation or testing the offline route.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall, or proxy protections to force setup through.
- Do not delete registry keys or Office folders based on a generic internet list.
- Do not reset Windows before Microsoft support or an administrator has ruled out the supported cleanup and installation paths.
These precautions preserve evidence and reduce the chance that a failed installation becomes a broader Windows or licensing problem.

How do I know when the problem is resolved?
Installation is resolved when setup completes without 0-1012, the Office applications open normally, and the expected product appears in the account or organization’s assigned software. If an “Unlicensed Product” banner remains, continue with the separate activation checks rather than repeating installation cleanup.
After activation, open an Office application and confirm that updates can run and that the correct account is displayed under the account section. Keep the record of the original code and the successful remedy in case a later repair or organizational deployment needs the same information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 0-1012 the same as 0-1012 (0)?
They are two forms used in installation reports for the same error family. When you contact support, copy the complete version exactly as displayed, including the parenthesized zero, because setup logs may use the longer form.
Can I keep using Office while an installation repair is pending?
If an existing Office installation still opens, save important work and avoid running updates or another installer at the same time as cleanup. A failed repair can leave applications unavailable until the process and restart are complete, so plan the work for a period when Office is not needed.
Does changing my Microsoft account fix 0-1012?
Usually not when the code appears before installation finishes. Account and subscription checks matter after Office is installed and shows an activation message; changing accounts will not repair a blocked download, leftover components, or damaged setup state.
Why does Project sometimes show this code?
Project uses the same general Office Click-to-Run installation technology in many deployments, so its setup can report the same installer failure family. Tell support that Project was the product being installed, since its existing components and licensing assignment may differ from a Microsoft 365 Apps installation.
