Microsoft has not published a confirmed explanation for Microsoft Store error 0x8007422. The code has been reported when opening Store, downloading apps, and signing in to Store-connected games, but the available report does not establish a cause. Start with the low-risk steps below—reset the Store cache, install updates, and check your time and region—then move to app repair or registration only if needed. Keep the code exactly as shown; 0x8007422 is not the same as 0x80070422.

What does Microsoft Store error 0x8007422 mean?

The exact meaning of 0x8007422 is unconfirmed in the Microsoft documentation reviewed for this issue. A user reported the code on Microsoft Q&A on May 5, 2023, while opening Microsoft Store, trying to download apps, and signing in to Store-connected games. That locked community thread records symptoms and suggestions, not a Microsoft diagnosis.

That distinction matters when choosing a fix: there is no verified cause-specific procedure for this code. The steps below are Microsoft’s general Store troubleshooting and recovery options, ordered from least invasive to more involved. They can address common Store problems, but Microsoft has not stated that any one of them specifically resolves 0x8007422.

In practical terms, treat the number as an identifier for a Store failure, not as a diagnosis. The same code may be displayed at different points in the Store workflow: while the shell is opening, while an account is being authenticated, or while a package is being downloaded or updated. The action that triggers it is therefore as important as the number itself when you decide what to try next.

Do not substitute 0x80070422

0x80070422 is a different error code discussed in a separate Microsoft Q&A thread. Its suggested causes or fixes cannot be assumed to apply to 0x8007422. If you search for help or contact support, copy the complete code from your own error message rather than relying on a similar-looking result. A missing zero, an extra digit, or a transposed digit can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

What should I check before changing anything?

Record what you were doing when the error appeared. Store opening, account sign-in, app download, and app update are distinct failure points; that context helps narrow the next check without assuming the code itself identifies the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the action that triggers it. Note whether the error appears as soon as Store opens, after you sign in, when you select Download, or during an update. If it happens in a game, note whether the failure is specifically the Store-connected sign-in.
  2. Confirm the exact code. Take a screenshot of the complete message and check your Windows version and build: press Win+R, enter winver, and select OK. Record the Windows edition and version shown.
  3. Note the account and device context. Record whether you are using a personal or work/school Microsoft account and whether the PC is managed by an organization. These details are useful if policy, firewall, or proxy restrictions later become relevant.
  4. Test the scope. If possible, note whether every Store action fails or only one app or game. A Store-wide launch failure points to a different next step than one incompatible app.

Keep these notes even if an early step works. They make it easier to reverse a change, explain the sequence to Microsoft Support, or show an administrator that the failure occurs only on a managed network.

How do I reset the Microsoft Store cache?

Run wsreset.exe first. Microsoft Support’s general guidance says this resets the Store cache; it is a low-invasiveness step to try before repairing apps or changing package registration.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe, then select OK.
  3. Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to open automatically. Microsoft says this normally takes about ten seconds.
  4. Retry the same action that produced 0x8007422—for example, open Store, sign in, or download the affected app—and note whether the behavior changed.

The blank window is expected; it is not a prompt asking you to type another command. Do not close it immediately unless it remains open far longer than expected. When Store reopens, repeat the exact operation you recorded rather than testing only a different page.

If the error remains, continue to updates rather than repeatedly running the cache reset. A cache reset is a general Store troubleshooting step, not a confirmed code-specific fix.

How do I update Windows and Microsoft Store?

Install available Windows updates and Store app updates, then retry the failing action. The exact menu labels depend on whether the PC runs Windows 11 or Windows 10.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install available updates. Follow any restart prompt.
  3. Open Microsoft Store and select Library > Get updates.
  4. When updating completes, try the failed Store action again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Check for and install available Windows updates, then restart if prompted.
  3. In Microsoft Store, select See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates.
  4. Retry the same action that produced the error.

Microsoft’s general checklist also advises checking that the affected app is compatible with your Windows version. If only one app is affected, check that app’s requirements and update or reinstall that app through Store rather than treating the symptom as proof that Store itself is broken. An app-specific failure should remain documented as app-specific when you report it.

Allow each update to finish before starting the next test. If Windows requests a restart, restart before deciding that the Store update failed; otherwise you may be testing a partially applied update.

Could the date, time, region, or account be involved?

Check that Windows has the correct date and time, the appropriate region and language settings, and that Store is signed in to the Microsoft account you intend to use. Incorrect clock or regional settings can interfere with Store access, but the available Microsoft material does not identify them as the cause of 0x8007422.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open Settings > Time & language and review the date, time, time zone, and region settings available for your Windows version.
  • In Microsoft Store, check the account shown in the profile area and sign in with the account associated with the Store app or game, if prompted.
  • Retry the same operation. If the code appears only after sign-in, include that detail in your notes; it does not by itself prove an account fault.

Use the account that owns the app or game license when testing. On a family, school, or work device, a different account may be intentionally limited. Do not infer from a successful sign-in that downloads must also work; authentication and package delivery can fail at separate stages.

How do I repair or reset Microsoft Store?

Use Windows’ built-in app recovery options after trying the cache and update checks. Repair is the less disruptive choice; use Reset only if Repair does not help.

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  3. Find Microsoft Store, open its additional options, and select Advanced options if shown.
  4. Select Repair, then retry the Store action that failed.
  5. If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset, then open Store and test again.

Menu labels and their placement vary slightly by Windows version. Work through Repair before Reset so you can identify which change affected the behavior. If the error occurs only with one particular Store app rather than Store generally, use Store’s Library to reinstall that affected app as the general Microsoft checklist recommends. Do not infer that a Store-wide reset will fix a separate sign-in issue inside a game.

Keep your original symptom notes after Repair or Reset. If Store opens afterward but a download still fails, the remaining issue may be compatibility, account, policy, or network related rather than a launch problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I check Microsoft Store registration?

Check package registration only if Microsoft Store is missing or still cannot download after the lower-risk steps. Do not make package registration the first response to an unexplained code.

  1. Open a regular, non-elevated PowerShell prompt for the Windows user who needs Store.
  2. Run Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore* to see whether the package exists for that user.
  3. If the package exists and registration is the issue, run Microsoft Learn’s documented command in that same non-elevated user context: Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe.
  4. After the command completes, reopen Store and test the original action.

The first command is a check, not a repair by itself. If it does not show a package, do not repeatedly run the registration command or substitute a guessed package name. Record the result and escalate through Microsoft or the device administrator.

The elevation context matters: Microsoft warns that running the registration command from an elevated prompt registers Store for the administrator account rather than the current user. Microsoft Learn also says, “Completely uninstalling Microsoft Store isn’t supported.” Avoid destructive removal scripts; they are not the documented first-line recovery path.

What if a policy, firewall, or proxy blocks Store?

On a work, school, or otherwise managed PC, an administrator’s policy or network controls may block Store access, downloads, or updates. Microsoft Learn documents the RemoveWindowsStore policy as one control that can block access, and says required endpoints must be reachable for downloads and updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If the device is managed, ask the administrator whether Store access is restricted by policy and whether the organization’s proxy or firewall permits the required Store endpoints.
  • Do not try to bypass a work or school restriction by changing policy or network settings yourself; the administrator may have intentionally disabled Store.
  • For Store apps available through Microsoft’s package route, Microsoft documents winget search <App name> followed by winget install <App name> as an alternate way to find and install an app. Availability and the exact package match should be checked before installing.

Use winget search to verify the result before installing. A similarly named package is not automatically the app you intended, and an organization may restrict the Windows Package Manager route as well. An alternate package route can help with an individual app, but it does not prove that Microsoft Store itself is repaired.

Which fix should I try for each symptom?

Use the symptom to choose the next check, not as proof of the code’s cause. This order moves from general and less invasive checks toward changes that affect app state or package registration.

Observed problem First checks When to move on
Store will not open Record the exact error; run wsreset.exe; install Windows and Store updates. If it still will not open, try Repair and then Reset. Consider registration only if Store is missing or remains unavailable.
Store opens, but sign-in fails Check date, time, region, and the account in use; record whether the failure happens before or after sign-in. If the device is managed, ask about account, policy, and network restrictions before changing system settings.
A download or update fails Reset cache; install updates; check whether the specific app supports your Windows version. If Store still cannot download, check managed-device policy, firewall, or proxy controls; then consider registration if it is actually missing or broken.
Only one Store app or game fails Check that app’s compatibility and updates; use the Store Library to reinstall the affected app if appropriate. Keep the app-specific behavior separate from a general Store failure when reporting the issue.

The table also reflects relative invasiveness and evidence strength. Cache reset and updates are broad, low-risk Microsoft Support recommendations. Repair and Reset alter the Store app state but remain built-in recovery options. AppX registration is more targeted and should be reserved for a missing or broken registration. Policy and network checks are especially important on managed devices, where local changes may not be appropriate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing the code in a search query. Keep 0x8007422 intact. Results for 0x80070422 describe another report.
  • Starting with destructive scripts. Microsoft says complete Store uninstallation is unsupported. Use cache reset, updates, Repair, and Reset first.
  • Using an elevated PowerShell window by habit. Registration from an elevated prompt targets the administrator account rather than the affected standard user.
  • Repeating one step without retesting. After each action, repeat the same Store operation and record whether the symptom changed.
  • Assuming a game problem is automatically a Store problem. Note whether the failure is the Store-connected sign-in, the game itself, or the download.
  • Bypassing organizational controls. Ask the administrator about RemoveWindowsStore, proxy, firewall, and required endpoint access instead of altering managed settings.

When should I contact Microsoft Support?

Escalate if the error persists after the relevant general checks, especially if Store remains unavailable or you cannot install needed apps. Provide the information that lets support distinguish a launch, sign-in, download, or update failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact code, including the leading zero: 0x8007422.
  • Your Windows edition, version, and build from winver.
  • The Store action that triggers the message and whether it happens consistently.
  • Whether the affected item is Store itself or one app/game, and whether failure is associated with sign-in.
  • Whether the account is personal or work/school and whether the PC is managed.
  • A screenshot of the error, if it shows the complete message.
  • Which steps you completed, in order, and whether the Store cache reset, updates, Repair, or Reset changed the symptom.
  • If registration was checked, whether Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore* returned a package and whether the command was run non-elevated.

There is no published success rate or prevalence estimate for this exact code in the reviewed sources. Treat community suggestions and individual reports as clues, not as evidence of a universal fix. The exact-code report is a locked Microsoft Q&A post dated May 5, 2023; Microsoft Support’s Store troubleshooting applies generally to Windows 10 and Windows 11, while the Microsoft Learn download-failure guidance applies to supported Windows Client versions and was last updated February 12, 2026.

If you want an optional shortcut for some common Windows issues, Outbyte PC Repair can address broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files where possible, adjust settings to reduce CPU, RAM, and disk load, and clean temporary and cache files. It also includes privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, a file shredder, and an app-crash log; results vary, and it does not repair every issue. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days followed by a paid subscription. It complements, and does not replace, antivirus software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does error 0x8007422 mean my Microsoft account was blocked?

The code alone does not establish that an account was blocked. The exact-code report mentions sign-in symptoms but does not provide a Microsoft diagnosis tying the code to an account restriction. Check the account, date, time, and region, and include the point at which sign-in fails when you request support.

Is there an official Microsoft fix specifically for 0x8007422?

The reviewed Microsoft materials provide general Store recovery guidance, not a fix confirmed for this exact code. No published Microsoft definition, prevalence estimate, or success rate for 0x8007422 was identified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 0x8007422 the same as 0x80070422?

No. They are separate values discussed in different Microsoft Q&A reports. Keep 0x8007422 exactly as displayed when searching for help or contacting support.

Will wsreset.exe delete my installed apps?

Microsoft’s guidance describes wsreset.exe as a Store-cache reset and does not present it as an app-uninstallation procedure. Run it, wait for Store to reopen, and retest the same action.

Should I run the Store registration command as administrator?

No, not for the affected user. Microsoft warns that an elevated prompt registers the package for the administrator account rather than the current user. Use a regular, non-elevated PowerShell prompt and only consider registration when the package exists but registration is missing or broken.

Can I uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Store completely?

Microsoft Learn says completely uninstalling Microsoft Store is not supported. Use the documented cache, update, Repair, Reset, and targeted registration options instead of destructive removal scripts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if only Minecraft or another game cannot sign in?

Record that the failure occurs in a Store-connected game and whether Store itself opens and downloads other apps. Check the account, clock, region, and app compatibility, but do not assume a game sign-in symptom proves a Store-wide cause.

Can I use winget when Microsoft Store downloads fail?

Microsoft documents winget search <App name> followed by winget install <App name> as an alternate package route for Store apps. Verify the package match and any organization restrictions before installing.

What should I give Microsoft Support?

Provide the exact code, a screenshot, Windows edition/version/build from winver, the triggering action, whether one app or Store generally is affected, account type, managed-device status, and the troubleshooting steps and results.

Will resetting Microsoft Store erase my installed games?

The Microsoft guidance cited here recommends the built-in Repair and Reset options, but it does not specify what happens to every game’s local data or save files. If a particular game’s progress matters, check that game’s own save and cloud-sync guidance before resetting or reinstalling it.

The Bottom Line

Microsoft has not confirmed what 0x8007422 means. Capture the exact code and trigger, run wsreset.exe, install Windows and Store updates, and verify time, region, and account settings. Then try Repair and Reset. Use non-elevated AppX registration only when Store registration is actually missing or broken, and involve an administrator when policy, firewall, or proxy controls apply.
