Fix Windows 11 in the least disruptive order: run the matching Get Help troubleshooter, check recent updates and hardware, and back up important files before using recovery tools. The right path depends on whether the problem is an update, sound, startup, networking, a blue screen, or general instability. Built-in troubleshooters can diagnose many common faults; Startup Repair handles boot failures; uninstalling an update or using System Restore can reverse a recent change. Reinstalling Windows or using Reset this PC should be reserved for cases that survive those steps.

What should I do first when Windows 11 starts misbehaving?

Begin with the symptom that is easiest to reproduce and choose the least destructive fix. Do not reset or reinstall Windows while a built-in diagnostic, update rollback, or restore point could solve the problem.

  1. Save your work and disconnect unnecessary hardware. Remove nonessential USB drives, docks, printers, and hubs. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and any device needed to reproduce the fault.
  2. Restart once. A restart completes pending servicing operations and can reload a failed driver or Windows service.
  3. Open Get Help. Search the Start menu for Get Help, describe the symptom in plain language, and follow the diagnostic flow Microsoft provides. Use the specific troubleshooter for audio, Bluetooth, camera, network and internet, printer, program compatibility, or video playback when it matches the problem.
  4. Note what changed. Record the date of the first failure and whether Windows Update, a driver, an application, new hardware, or a settings change came first. That determines whether an update uninstall or System Restore is more appropriate.
  5. Back up before recovery. Windows Backup, OneDrive, or copying files to a USB drive can preserve documents, photos, saved games, and other personal data. Some recovery choices can remove files or applications.

If the computer is slow, freezing, or crashing but still reaches the desktop, start with Get Help and recent-change checks. If it cannot reach Windows, skip to the WinRE section below.

How do I fix a Windows 11 update that will not install?

Run the Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter first, then verify the conditions that commonly block servicing. Clear the update cache only after those checks and only with administrator access.

Check the prerequisites

  • Connect the PC to reliable power; a laptop should be plugged in.
  • Confirm a working internet connection and disable captive-portal or metered-network restrictions temporarily when appropriate.
  • Sign in with an administrator account or have administrator credentials available.
  • Disconnect unnecessary external drives, phones, printers, and other USB hardware.
  • Check that the system drive has enough free space for the update and its temporary files.

Run the automated repair

  1. Open Get Help from Start.
  2. Enter Windows Update troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
  3. Restart when Get Help requests it, then select Settings > Windows Update and choose Check for updates.

Clear the SoftwareDistribution cache only when directed

A damaged download cache can keep an update from completing. Microsoft’s procedure uses an elevated Command Prompt to stop the update service, rename or clear C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, restart the service, and try Windows Update again. Because service commands and permissions vary by system state, follow Microsoft’s current procedure exactly rather than deleting unrelated folders or changing the registry.

If the same update repeatedly fails, record its error code and Windows 11 version. An update that fails after a driver or firmware change may need the hardware maker’s current package, while an update that began failing after a system change may be better addressed with System Restore.

Why is there no sound after a Windows 11 update?

Most post-update audio failures come from the wrong output selection, muted hardware, a disconnected cable, or an audio driver that changed during servicing. Check those simple causes before reinstalling anything.

Confirm the selected output

  1. Select the speaker icon on the taskbar and open the output-device list.
  2. Choose the intended speakers, headset, monitor, dock, or Bluetooth device.
  3. Open Settings > System > Sound and verify that the same device is selected for output.
  4. Raise the Windows volume and check the physical mute switch, headset control, monitor volume, and cable connections.

Run audio diagnostics and install pending updates

Use the audio troubleshooter in Get Help, then install available Windows updates. Restart after installation so the audio service and driver load cleanly.

Update, reinstall, or roll back the audio driver

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver. If Windows cannot find a suitable package, obtain the driver from the PC or audio-device manufacturer.
  4. If the update introduced the failure, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
  5. If the device is missing or corrupted, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and let Windows redetect it. Reinstall the manufacturer package if detection does not restore sound.

Some Microsoft audio guidance also calls for restarting Windows audio services. Use services.msc only when the troubleshooting instructions identify those services; changing unrelated services can create new problems.

How do I fix Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, camera, printer, compatibility, or video problems?

Use the matching Get Help troubleshooter before making manual driver or registry changes. These focused flows check device state and common configuration faults with less risk than broad system changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Wi-Fi or internet: run the network and internet troubleshooter, confirm the correct network and password, and restart the router only after checking that other devices are affected.
  • Bluetooth: make sure Bluetooth is enabled, the accessory is charged and discoverable, and remove and re-pair it if the troubleshooter recommends doing so.
  • Camera: check the physical privacy shutter, app permissions, and whether another application is using the camera.
  • Printer: verify the selected printer, paper and connection, then use the printer troubleshooter before removing the device or its driver.
  • Program compatibility: run the program-compatibility troubleshooter and check whether the application has a Windows 11 update from its developer.
  • Video playback: run the video-playback troubleshooter and check display-driver updates if the fault began after a graphics change.

How do I fix a Windows 11 blue screen, including WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR?

A blue screen is a stop error, not a diagnosis by itself. Start with Windows and driver updates, then use the timing of the crash to decide whether System Restore or Startup Repair is appropriate.

For WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR

  1. Install available Windows updates and current hardware drivers.
  2. Remove recently added hardware or software if the stop error began immediately afterward.
  3. If Windows still starts, use System Restore to return system files and settings to a point before the change.
  4. If Windows cannot start normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and run Startup Repair.

Do not assume that every WHEA error has the same cause. Note the stop-code details, frequency, and whether the PC crashes under a particular workload. Repeated failures after updates can point to a driver or software change; failures during startup require the recovery path.

How do I repair Windows 11 when it will not boot?

Use WinRE’s Startup Repair before reinstalling Windows. It attempts to correct damaged system files, boot configuration data, the master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers, and registry errors.

Enter Windows Recovery Environment

Windows may enter WinRE automatically after failed starts. If it does not, interrupt startup several times by holding the power button while Windows begins to load; on the next start, Windows should show recovery options. A Windows 11 installation USB can also start recovery when the internal system is inaccessible. Use installation media only as a fallback, and verify that any marketplace media is authentic, matches your Windows edition and architecture, and can be activated with your license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Startup Repair

  1. Choose Troubleshoot.
  2. Open Advanced options.
  3. Select Startup Repair and choose the affected Windows installation when prompted.
  4. Allow the process to finish and restart.

If device encryption is enabled, Microsoft says WinRE may require the BitLocker recovery key. Find that key before starting recovery; without it, encrypted data may remain inaccessible even if the boot repair succeeds.

Which Windows 11 recovery option should I choose?

Choose the least disruptive option that matches the timing and severity of the fault. Back up first, because the options differ substantially in what they preserve.

Option Best use Files, apps, and settings Availability and disruption
Get Help troubleshooter Specific audio, network, device, update, compatibility, or playback symptoms Designed to diagnose or adjust the affected component without a broad rollback Built into supported Windows 11 installations; least disruptive
Uninstall a recent update The failure began directly after a quality or feature update Personal files and installed apps remain; the selected update is removed Available only while Windows retains the relevant rollback option; low to moderate disruption
System Restore A driver, app, or system change caused instability Rolls back system files and settings; it is not a substitute for a personal-file backup Requires an available restore point; documented point-in-time restore applies to Windows 11 version 24H2 or later
Startup Repair Black screen, restart loop, or failure to reach Windows Targets boot files and startup configuration rather than personal documents Runs from WinRE; BitLocker recovery key may be required
Reinstall Windows Persistent corruption after less disruptive repairs Microsoft documents a reinstall that preserves files, apps, and settings on supported Windows 11 version 22H2 or later; confirm the exact reinstall path before proceeding More disruptive and time-consuming than rollback or restore
Reset this PC Last-resort software recovery when other options fail Can remove apps and settings and, depending on the selected option, personal files Most disruptive choice; back up first and read every reset screen

How do I uninstall a Windows 11 update safely?

Use this when the problem started immediately after a specific update and Windows still opens or offers the recovery menu. Uninstalling the update leaves personal files and applications in place, but it removes the selected Windows package.

  1. In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
  2. Select Uninstall updates, choose the recent update associated with the failure, and confirm.
  3. Restart and test the original symptom.

If Windows will not start, use WinRE > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Choose the quality or feature update option that matches the timing. If the uninstall option is unavailable, use Startup Repair or System Restore instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I use System Restore without losing the wrong data?

System Restore returns system files, drivers, installed programs, and settings to an earlier restore point; it is intended for system changes, not as a general backup. Your personal files are not the target of the rollback, but back them up before proceeding because recovery always carries risk.

  1. Search Start for Create a restore point and open the matching Control Panel result.
  2. Select System Restore, choose a restore point dated before the failure, and use Scan for affected programs to see what will change.
  3. Confirm the point, keep the PC powered, and allow Windows to restart.

In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. On Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, Microsoft documents point-in-time restore behavior; the exact restore points available still depend on what protection was enabled before the failure.

When should I reinstall or reset Windows 11?

Escalate only after troubleshooters, update rollback, System Restore, and Startup Repair have failed or are unavailable. Reinstalling can repair deep system corruption, but it takes longer and may require drivers, application installers, and activation details afterward.

Prepare before a reinstall

  • Back up personal files to OneDrive, Windows Backup, or a separate USB drive.
  • Export browser data, password-manager access, game saves, and two-factor recovery codes as appropriate.
  • Record the Windows edition, language, architecture, and applications you must reinstall.
  • Have the BitLocker recovery key and Windows activation information available.
  • Keep the PC connected to power and a reliable network.

Choose the least destructive reinstall path

On supported Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, Microsoft documents a reinstall path that can preserve personal files, apps, and settings. Read the confirmation screen carefully to verify that the selected path really preserves those items on your edition. If you choose Reset this PC, select the file-preservation option only if it meets your needs; even that option removes applications and settings, and a full reset can remove personal files.

What should I do if a fix makes Windows 11 worse?

Stop making additional changes and return to WinRE or the last known working configuration. If a driver installation caused the new symptom, use Device Manager to roll it back or uninstall it; if an update caused it, use the update-uninstall path. Restore a known-good restore point before attempting a reinstall, and keep your backup untouched until the system is stable.

Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut after the built-in Windows steps. It can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, offer a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log, and runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. A free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Windows 11 troubleshooter fix problems without an internet connection?

Some diagnostics can perform local checks, but Get Help may need an internet connection to retrieve guidance or updated components. If the PC is offline, use the relevant WinRE option or the local Settings and Device Manager steps, then reconnect before running online diagnostics.

Where can I find my BitLocker recovery key before using Startup Repair?

Check the Microsoft account used to set up the PC, a work or school account managed by your organization, a printed copy, or a saved USB/text file. If the device belongs to an employer or school, contact its administrator rather than guessing the key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will uninstalling a Windows 11 update stop future security updates?

No. It removes the selected package, but Windows Update can offer it again after Microsoft changes or supersedes the update. Pause updates briefly while you diagnose the cause, then resume servicing once the device is stable.

What information should I record before contacting support?

Write down the exact stop code or update error, Windows 11 version, device model, recent driver or application changes, and the steps that reproduce the problem. Screenshots of error dialogs and the time of each failure can help support identify a pattern.
