This error means Minecraft could not complete a connection to the target address and port before the attempt expired. It is a reachability problem—not one specific firewall, Java, or graphics error. The right fix depends on whether you use Java or Bedrock Edition, and whether you are joining a LAN world, internet server, Realm, or hosted world.

- Java Edition: Usually involves Direct Connect, LAN worlds, self-hosted servers, modded servers, community servers, or Java Realms.
- Bedrock Edition: May involve account permissions, console subscriptions, Xbox/Microsoft services, custom ports, or Bedrock version matching.
- LAN: Players are on the same home network. Port forwarding is normally unnecessary.
- Internet server: Players connect from outside the host’s network. Port forwarding, NAT, firewall, and public-IP issues may apply.
- Realm: Join through Minecraft’s Realm menu, not a normal IP address.
If only one server fails, suspect that server, its address, port, or outage. If every server fails, investigate your firewall, VPN, proxy, DNS, network, account, or launcher.
Safe fixes to try first
- Close Minecraft completely and reopen it.
- Restart the computer or console.
- Restart the router if other internet applications are also unreliable.
- Sign out of the Microsoft account in the launcher, then sign back in.
- Update Minecraft and the launcher.
- Use the normal current release—not a snapshot, preview, or incompatible release.
- Disconnect a VPN or proxy temporarily.
- Try Ethernet or a different network, such as a mobile hotspot, as a diagnostic test.
Minecraft’s official Java guidance also recommends checking the connection, firewall and antivirus rules, VPN settings, NAT, and—where possible—using Ethernet. Minecraft’s Java multiplayer troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

Fix a Java LAN timeout
1. Confirm the host is ready
The host must be awake, connected to the same network, have the world open, and choose Multiplayer → Open to LAN. Minecraft displays a temporary LAN port in chat. That port can change when the world is reopened.
Both players should be on the same home network. Guest Wi-Fi, school or workplace networks, and router settings such as client isolation or AP isolation can prevent devices from communicating even when they appear to use the same Wi-Fi.

2. Set a trusted Windows home network to Private
On the host or joining Windows PC:
- Close Minecraft.
- Right-click the network icon and open Network & Internet settings.
- Open the active connection’s Properties.
- Change Network profile type from Public to Private.
- Start Minecraft, open the world to LAN again, and retry.
Only choose Private on a trusted home network. Do not change café, airport, apartment, or other untrusted Wi-Fi to Private. See the official Windows LAN instructions.
3. Use the host’s local IPv4 address
On the host, run:
ipconfig
Find the active adapter’s IPv4 Address, commonly something like 192.168.1.25. From another computer, do not use localhost or 127.0.0.1; those refer to the joining computer itself.
If Minecraft’s LAN discovery does not show the world, try Java’s Direct Connect using the host’s private IPv4 address and the displayed LAN port, for example:
192.168.1.25:54321
4. Allow Minecraft or Java through the firewall
On Windows, open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall. Allow the relevant Minecraft launcher and Java components on the trusted private network. A self-hosted server may use java.exe, javaw.exe, the launcher’s bundled runtime, or a custom Java installation.

If necessary, create an inbound rule for the actual LAN server port. Do not permanently disable Windows Firewall or antivirus software. A narrowly scoped application or port rule is safer; if you perform a temporary test, re-enable protection immediately afterward.
You normally do not need port forwarding for a LAN world. Forwarding the LAN port exposes it to internet traffic and complicates troubleshooting.

Fix a Java server timeout over the internet
For an outside player to connect, every part of this chain must work:
- The Minecraft server process is running.
- The server is listening on the configured port.
- The host firewall permits that port.
- The router forwards the port to the host computer’s current private IPv4 address.
- The joining player uses the current public IP or hostname.
- The network allows inbound connections.
Verify the server and port
Check the hosting panel, server console, or server.properties. Important settings include:
server-port=
server-ip=
Use the configured server-port; do not blindly assume 25565. That port is commonly used by Java servers, but administrators and hosting companies can choose another one. For most self-hosted servers, leave server-ip blank unless you specifically need to bind the server to one network interface. Do not enter the public IP there.
The official Java server download page shows a launch format like:
java -Xmx4G -Xms4G -jar minecraft_server.<version>.jar nogui
If the server does not launch, investigate Java compatibility and the server console first. Reinstalling Java is generally irrelevant when the server launches successfully but clients time out. The official Java server page provides the server software and setup information.
Test reachability from Windows
On the joining PC, basic tests can narrow the problem:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchping <host-ip>
A failed ping is only a clue because firewalls and routers can block ICMP while still allowing Minecraft traffic. Test the actual TCP port in PowerShell:
Test-NetConnection <host-ip-or-domain> -Port <port>
For an internet server, test its public hostname or public IP—not the host’s private LAN address.

TcpTestSucceeded: True: The address and port are reachable. Check Minecraft release, Java/Bedrock edition, loader, mods, whitelist, authentication, proxy, resource pack, and server logs.TcpTestSucceeded: False: Check the server process, configured port, host firewall, router forwarding, public IP, NAT, or hosting provider.
Configure port forwarding carefully
The router rule must forward the same configured server port to the host computer’s current private IP. Reserve that IP in the router’s DHCP settings so it does not change after a reboot. Confirm whether the rule requires TCP, UDP, or both according to the server software and host documentation.
Port forwarding cannot fix a stopped server, incorrect address, host firewall block, double NAT, or carrier-grade NAT.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Diagnose double NAT and CGNAT
Double NAT commonly occurs when a modem/router and a second router both perform routing. Signs include a private WAN address on the downstream router, local connections working while outside connections fail, or forwarding that never works reliably. Possible remedies are bridge or access-point mode, forwarding through both routers, or asking the ISP for a public IPv4 address.
Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) means the ISP shares a public address among customers. In that situation, ordinary router forwarding may never accept an outside connection. Ask the ISP for a public IPv4 address, use compatible IPv6, use a reputable relay or tunnel after reviewing its security, move to managed hosting, or use Realms.
Check VPN, proxy, and DNS settings
A VPN can cause the timeout by blocking, rerouting, or slowing traffic. Disconnect it temporarily. Also check Windows or launcher proxy settings.
If only hostname-based connections fail, flush DNS and retry with the server’s IP:
ipconfig /flushdns
If the IP works but the hostname does not, investigate the hostname’s DNS record or hosting provider. DNS changes cannot make an offline server reachable, bypass a firewall, or repair NAT. Do not treat Google DNS or another provider as a universal fix.
Fix Bedrock multiplayer timeouts
Bedrock follows a different troubleshooting path. First, update every player to the latest compatible release and leave preview or beta builds when joining a normal session. Check that the host’s world or server is online; a LAN world, personally hosted server, or hosted world generally requires the host to be online, unlike a Realm.

On consoles, multiplayer may require the relevant online subscription: Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, or PlayStation Plus. Also check Microsoft/Xbox account privacy and multiplayer permissions.
Review custom DNS and port settings if they were changed. For Bedrock Dedicated Server, Microsoft’s official setup documentation says the firewall must allow the ports configured by server-port and server-portv6.
Use the official Bedrock multiplayer troubleshooting guide for account, subscription, update, host, DNS, and service checks.
Check versions, mods, and server access
Do this after testing reachability. A port that accepts TCP traffic does not guarantee that Minecraft can complete the login or join sequence.
- Confirm Java versus Bedrock Edition.
- Match the exact Minecraft release.
- Match Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or other loader versions.
- Install the required client-side and server-side mods.
- Check mod versions and dependencies.
- Leave snapshots and previews when joining a normal release.
- Check whitelist, authentication, resource-pack, proxy, and server-console errors.
Java and Bedrock Realms are separate; do not assume players from both editions can join the same Realm. Minecraft’s Realms page describes the edition-specific limits.

Use the symptom to choose the next test
| Symptom | Likely area | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| One public server times out | Server outage, address, route, or port | Try another server and verify the address with its operator |
| Every server times out | Firewall, VPN, proxy, DNS, network, account, or launcher | Disconnect VPN, test another network, and check firewall rules |
| LAN is invisible or times out | Public profile, guest Wi-Fi, isolation, firewall, wrong local IP | Use a trusted Private profile and test the local IPv4 plus LAN port |
| Local players connect but outsiders cannot | Forwarding, public IP, double NAT, or CGNAT | Test the public port externally and compare router WAN and public IP |
| IP works but hostname fails | DNS or stale hostname | Flush DNS and verify the hostname record |
| Port test succeeds but joining fails | Version, mods, whitelist, authentication, proxy, or logs | Compare client/server configuration and inspect logs |
| Bedrock console cannot join | Account permission or subscription | Check multiplayer settings and the platform’s online membership |
| Only a Realm fails | Realm, account, or service issue | Check the Realm’s status and the Realm-specific support path |
If nothing works
- Ask the server operator to confirm the process, port, firewall, and server logs.
- Try connecting from a different network, such as a mobile hotspot.
- Have another player test the same server.
- Contact the hosting provider or ISP if external access fails despite correct forwarding.
- Stop changing unrelated settings once the evidence identifies the failing layer.
Easiest paid alternative: Minecraft Realms
Minecraft Realms is an official, private, cloud-hosted option that removes much of the home-server burden. It is useful when you do not want port forwarding, are behind CGNAT or double NAT, want the world online while the owner is offline, or prefer invite-based access and backups.
At the time of the supplied research, the official US page displayed $3.99/month for Bedrock Realms, $7.99/month for Bedrock Realms Plus, and $7.99/month for Java Realms. Taxes, platform billing, promotions, and regional pricing can differ. Java Realms supports Java players across Windows, Linux, and macOS; Bedrock Realms supports Bedrock devices. The page lists Java Realms as supporting the owner plus up to 10 other simultaneous players, while Bedrock limits vary by tier.
Realms is not a universal repair: it will not fix an outdated game, local firewall, account restriction, or general internet outage. It is also a poor fit for large modpacks, arbitrary plugins, proxy networks, extensive server-file control, or Java/Bedrock cross-play in one Realm. The free official Java server software remains an option for readers willing to administer Java, firewalls, and possibly router forwarding.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need port forwarding for a Minecraft LAN world?
Usually no. Use the host’s private IPv4 address and the temporary port shown when the Java world is opened to LAN. Port forwarding is for intentional internet access and should not be used by default on a home LAN.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What does “no further information” mean?
It means the client did not receive a connection response from the target address and port before the attempt timed out. It does not identify whether the cause is the server, firewall, router, IP, port, NAT, or another layer.
Should I reinstall Java?
Usually not. Reinstall Java only when the server fails to launch or its console reports a runtime compatibility problem. A launched server that times out usually has a reachability or configuration issue.
Can a VPN cause this error?
Yes. A VPN can block or reroute Minecraft traffic, although it can sometimes help with particular routing or NAT problems. Disconnect it as a test, then use a narrowly scoped exception if appropriate.
Why can I join locally but not from outside my network?
The server may work locally while port forwarding, the public IP, double NAT, CGNAT, or the host firewall prevents inbound internet connections.
What if the port test succeeds but Minecraft still fails?
Stop changing router settings and check edition, exact release, loader, mods, whitelist, authentication, proxy configuration, resource packs, and server logs.
The Bottom Line
Start by identifying Java or Bedrock and LAN or internet play. Confirm the host, address, and actual port; then use Test-NetConnection to locate the failing layer. Fix firewall, network profile, forwarding, NAT, or compatibility only when the evidence points there.
